The View March 31 Recap: Real Life Hot Topics

by

barbara-walters-150.jpgToday’s episode of The View was new, despite the fact that the rest of the week are reruns. Today’s episode was pretaped sometime last week (they didn’t say it was “live” at the beginning).

Because of Barbara Walters special on longevity tomorrow, the first topic was “Would you want to live to 150?” Joy Behar would not do it because she would be worrying about her daughter who would be 125. She added that the botox alone would kill her. Elisabeth Hasselbeck said that she would if all those that she loved could be well and with her. Sherri said that she would love to see her grandkids, but there are people she would love to see up in heaven. She added that she is hoping that she is going. Whoopi Goldberg said that she would want to live to 150 because she would love to see the changes that we have in store. There are 78,000 people who are over 100 in the United States. By 2050, there will be a million people living to be 100.

Barbara joked whether they would be on The View when they were 150. Sherri said that she would be saying, “Hey, pass me my Lipitor.” Joy said, “Hey! I’m on that now.” Barbara said that she would not be able to remember the name of the show at that point.

Do looks matter less after you get married? Elisabeth said that we seem to make it less important, but we should still try to maintain a certain look for your spouse and take care of yourself, because attraction still matters. Barbara said that if it is a good marriage, looks matter less. Sherri said that she let herself go after they got married and didn’t put on makeup and wigs as much. Her husband told her that he gets the leftovers, saying that she looks good for other people, but not for him. Joy asked if he always looked like Denzel? Whoopi likes men before they gussy-up. She said that is more realistic of what you get for the duration for the relationship. She said that the effort is not as important in how you look, but in how you treat the person.

They talked about old men being with younger women and whether they have sex. Sherri said that even if you can’t have sex, you can do other things, like dance for them. Whoopi said that you can just lift your top. Elisabeth said that since the man is older, he may be used to more courtship and you wouldn’t have to do too much.

Jason Itzler appeared on the show to talk about escort services. He used to run a high-end escort service. He nows runs a matchmaking service. He did not consider himself a pimp, but he did sell sex. He made $200,000 a month before the agency was shut down and he went to prison. He started with a phone sex company.

Sherri asked how he lived with himself, knowing that women may have had abusive backgrounds. He said that the girls could have chosen to do other things and they made a lot of money.

He said 85-90% of his male clients were married. He previously said 99%, but that was “an embellishment.” He thinks most married men cheat, but he has never cheated. He thinks that men go to prostitutes because women’s bodies “aren’t as hot” when they get older. The men want younger good looking girls. He thinks that a mistress is a lot more threatening to a wife. He asked Joy which she would prefer and she said that they are not talking about her.

Elliot Spitzer was responsible for bringing down Itzler’s company. He doesn’t think that Spitzer should get prison for his own use of an escort service. Ashley, the woman that Spitzer hired, is a “classy little girl” with a nice tush. He also added that he couldn’t talk about what is the best thing about her because it is daytime television, but he did mention it on Howard Stern.

Whoopi said that he is still pimping the girl out because he is going on all the shows to talk about her. He said that she was a close friend of his and he is trying to help her get a career as an entertainer. He said that if it means promoting beautifully, then he is still pimping her.

The next segment was (more) about Barbara’s special “Live to 150.” It focuses on what things in the near future will enable us to live longer, such as stem cell research and other cutting edge science. The special also interviews real people who have lived to be more than 100. She showed a few clips from the special, which airs Tuesday night. I believe that the only reason there was a new episode today (when the rest of the week is reruns) was so that she could advertise for her special.

The next topic was “awake during surgery” and featured a woman, Carol Weiher, who woke up during surgery on her cornea. She couldn’t move at first, but later was able to move a little and they gave her another dose of paralytic, which felt like jet fuel going through her body. That medication is the basis of the Supreme Court case against lethal injection because of the pain it causes. She could not feel the cutting when they took her eye out. She tried to sue the hospital, but the judge thought her story was ridiculous and she felt compelled to settle. She believes this incident is why she is on the earth and she is meant to tell her story.

Kelly Haapala had surgery following an auto accident and was awake and could feel what was happening. She said that it was like someone sticking her with a hot poker. Eventually she was able to flail around and they put her back under. The doctor said afterward just to focus on her recovery and tried to act like it was not a big deal. Dr. Mathews, an expert, said that sometimes the patients don’t give them all the necessary information to get the correct dosage, such as alcohol or drug use. He said that being wake happens very rarely, where only 1-2 out of a thousand people remember any anything at all, such as a conversation. He said that people need to be frank with their anesthesiologist. They also have brain wave monitors in some hospitals which may help in the future.

It ticks me off that they had Jason Itzler on the show, I mean REALLY ticks me freakin off. So many things out there to promote and they waste time on giving this loser a forum? Why? I can see Howard Stern, Adam Corolla, Fox News and the likes having him on. But The View? Again, Why???
I guess it’s what you’d expect from the same women that told Obama he was sexy.
This show promotes that whole boys will be boys mentality.

  2. Barb Says:

Wasnt this supposed to be an hour of hot topics..? two guests and a 40 minute commercial for Barbara’s show..with all that goes on in the world..this is the best of hot topics?

  3. Carol Says:

Shannon - I’m with you on being ticked off about having Jason Itzler on the show - but they let EH waste time every day. Any one else losing respect for this show?

  4. maryellen Says:

Why don’t they ever talk about this economy? It’s HUGE what is going on right now. (Maybe they have & I missed it?)

Elisabeth’s compulsive talking & talking & talking is so irritating.

  5. marilyn Says:

My TV recorder seemed to suddenly cut to the end of the interview with Jason Itzler. It was a very uncomfortable conversation with him and at times, the ladies seemed to show their displeasure toward him. ( IMO ) It was okay with me and I hope it was the ABC station and not my TV that jumped to the end. At least I could come away from THAT hot topic, knowing THE VIEW had the sense to end it.
Did anyone else notice the ABRUPT end, as I did or was it my wishful thinking?

  6. marilyn Says:

    CORRECTION :#5 marilyn says:

“The ladies seemed to show their displeasure toward him. ( IMO )** It was okay with me.”

I meant to say : ” The ladies seemed to show their displeasure toward him ( IMO ) ** AND I AGREE WITH THEM.”

  7. Monika Clauberg Says:

This has been the most irritating show yet. Barbara Walters just got 45 Minutes of advertising for her Special. I will be sure, NOT to watch it.
It was bad enough to get through the Obama rhetoric, same-0-same-O.
I have been ill and house/couch bound. During my recovery, I became”addicted” to the view. The above is making it easier to break the habit. Monika in Las Vegas

  8. maryellen Says:

I wasn’t able to really see a lot of the show, Marilyn, so I don’t know. My father-in-law is visiting us right now & is VERY high maintenance. :)
He is VERY VERY conservative (part of the 10% who still like Bush), pro McCain (it’s more that he is anti-Hill-Hussein, which is his cute nickname for HC & BO, than pro-McCain). Even he was ticked off at Elisabeth on Friday for wasting her question on that reverend Wright guy. He wanted her to ask Obama if he’s “planning to cut and run” in Iraq. See, all you conservatives: it’s not just Democrats or liberals who didn’t like her missed opportunity to ask about something important. My father-in-law was actually calling her “a little twit” among other things.

  9. Stephanie Says:

WOW… I’ve definitely lost all respect for the show for having Jason Itzler on. Not only was it a waste of time, the interview was so awkward and pointless!!! I would expect that interview from a tabloid-ish show like the insider but not The View. I didnt watch the show after his interview, but it doesnt seem like I missed anything anyways!

  10. Sandy Says:

    Always appreciate Winnie’s recaps. :)

I didn’t get to see the show, and it seems I didn’t miss that much.

I probably will watch Barb’s special, since I am interested in the topic. (and I didn’t see the clips). :)

I also think it is very poor judgement to have Itzler on the show. It’s not about waisting time,..for me..it’s about what he promotes.

  11. Barry Says:

Why have a guest on (Jason Itzer) if all your going to do mis attack them (him). No one was interested in what he had to say only on giving there own opinion of how bad hew was and how horrible the idea of an escort service is; you could have done that without Jason!

  12. Sandy Says:

I think that Barry has a good point. I have had the sense for awhile now that the View “seems” to have a difficulty getting guest. That’s just my impression.
I had thought that in prior months it had to do with the writers strike, but now..?
They seem to have many guest from ABC.

Maybe others have the same impression. Some will probably say it is because of E.H., but I don’t believe that. Although I don’t know the reason.

  13. Pat Says:

sorry…..but the thought of being able to live well past 100 seems selfish to me. Our beautiful planet is not getting larger, but instead ’smaller’ each day with over-population and the problems that result.
How could I face my grandchildren in 30 or so years with the comment “sorry, my dears, but there is no room, yet, for you to produce more people…because grandma and her friends still have 30 to 40 years left living on this planet!”

  14. Dottie Barton Says:

Whoopi is the only person on that show worth watching. She’s funny AND intelligent. If she had her own show, it would be a hit.

  15. Dee Says:

#14″Whoopi is the only person on that show worth watching. She’s funny AND intelligent. If she had her own show, it would be a hit.”

I have become disillusioned with her performance on this show, perhaps she is fed up too. Time will tell, but this is not her finest performance by any stretch.

I guess I am going to start relying on Winnie’s recaps again as this type of show is morphing into Maury Povich theater.

  16. msroncon Says:

Now its spring and Eh wears winter boots. Her stylist stinks.

  17. GothamGirrl Says:

It’s still chilly in New York. I saw many boots today, scarves and gloves, some hats.

  18. Shelby Says:

“Whoopi is the only person on that show worth watching. She’s funny AND intelligent. If she had her own show, it would be a hit.

Oh my, I kept waiting for another post saying “GOTCHA” or “ONLY KIDDING”! Whoopi, is that you?? (or your daughter or grandchild or publicist or boyfriend or mom, etc. etc)

  19. SuzanneM Says:

I agree Whoopi is funny & intelligent. I don’t know about her own show, though. I think she does better with cohosts to bounce off of. At this point I think she’s the strongest thing on The View.

  20. misslingdow Says:

Shelby– that was laugh out loud like a crazy woman funny!!! I usually only listen to the View at work and rarely get a chance to watch so I have only read about Whoopi’s weird facial expressions. I watched when Obama was on and I thought what the hell is wrong with Whoppi? Is she drunk, a sleep, having a stroke then when she got off the couch after Sherry cracked a funny one on Bawa, (I thought what Sherry said was HILARIOUS) I thought what is Whoppi doing? Seriously, does anyone know what the point of her going behind the couch was? She is distracting. She is better for the radio.

  21. Tina Says:

Dottie said: “Whoopi is the only person on that show worth watching. She’s funny AND intelligent. If she had her own show, it would be a hit.”

Girlfriend, where have you been? Most of the time, Whoopi acts like she doesn’t even want to be there. She’s ok, but she’s not the best on that panel. I’m still LMAO at that one! Joy and Sherri are the bomb!

  22. MindyLee Says:

Even before Monday’s show, I was starting to become frustrated with the View for just being one big advertisement for ABC (and mostly Barbara’s numerous specials). I think they had planned to talk to Jason Itzer longer, but because everyone was jumping down his throat, the control room told Barbara to cut it short (that’s what it looked like to me anyway), so they had to fill that time with MORE talk about her silly special. Thank God for TiVo!!

  23. May Says:

I missed most of this show but have to add that Sherri was on Jay Leno’s show last night…she was trying to be funny, which she usually is, but last night she only seemed to be loud and flirty (with David Beckham). She was telling how she was arrested in her youth for ignoring traffic tickets and being hauled off with prostitutes, all of them in short mini skirts. ABC suddenly went dark and stayed dark even up to Conan O’Brian’s show. At that point I didn’t even mind. This has nothing to do with “The View” but couln’t resist.

  24. Tina Says:

I love Sherri, she’s my girl but wow, last night, I felt kind of embarrassed for her. That blouse she was wearing made her boobs look 5 times bigger than they ususally look on The View. Maybe that’s what she wanted. I’m not sure. Oh, well.. I still think she’s great.

  25. Meredith Says:

re: upcoming McCain visit, I would incourage you as part of your preparation to read this:

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/frank-schaeffer/sometimes-honor-is-wrong-_b_94524.html

  26. Meredith Says:

    oops, encourage (not incourage)

  27. maryellen Says:

Thanks, Meredith. I wish Elisabeth would read that. But she’s probably too busy educating herself on the hateful Rev. Hagee so she can grill McCain on him like she grilled Obama on Wright.
    :)
