The View March 4th Recap: Yunjin Kim

by Winnie McCarthy

yunjin-kim-lost.jpg The first topic on The View today was the Democratic primaries. Whoopi asked if Hilllary Clinton does poorly, should she drop out of the race? A man in the audience shouted, “Yes!” Joy asked why men are always the loudest. Joy wondered why they have to keep calling every big election “Super Tuesday” and should just call it Tuesday. She said that it is like trying to have an orgasm every single time. Elisabeth said that Hillary should stay in the race as long as she thinks she has a chance to win. Joy said, “Don’t listen to her; She is a Republican.” Elisabeth admitted that she also thinks it is a strategic advantage for the republicans if she stays in.

Rush Limbaugh wants people to vote for Hillary so that the Democratic primary race goes on. He wants the soap opera to continue and wants Barack Obama “bloodied up politically.” Joy said that after working with Limbaugh, she knows that it is about his show and not real patriotism. He knows if Hillary stay in the race, he has more ammo for his show. Sherri pointed out that even Bill Clinton is saying that Hillary should drop out if she doesn’t win Texas and Ohio. Joy said, “What a supportive husband!” Elisabeth said that he has done nothing but hurt her campaign. Whoopi said that it has been exciting campaign and wants Hillary to stay in, because otherwise it will just be two guys again.

Whoopi talked again about how who they choose for Vice Presidential running mate is important and said that Obama and Clinton together would be a great team. Sherri asked if Clinton was the Vice President if she could run again? They told her yes and she said that she would be older. Whoopi said, “Look at John McCain!” Elisabeth said it would be “a lot of Clinton in the White House.” Whoopi said that the last name shouldn’t matter and what is important about the good they will do for the country. Whoopi then said “baa baa” and added if you think that way, baa, you are a sheep.

The new controversy at American Idol is that David Hernandez was a male stripper. Another contestant Ramiele Malubay had some racy photos on her Facebook page. Previously on an earlier season, Frenchie Davis got kicked off the show because she had previously posed topless. Joy said that is because of Britney Spears that the standards have changed. Elisabeth said that she has secrets of things she did as a teen, but luckily it was not in the age of digital media. Joy tried to get her to admit what she had done in the past, but she refused.

Two mothers got arrested for fighting at Chucky Cheese because one child hogged the video game. Sherri said that Chucky Cheese is a scary place and some of the other parents scare her. She said that “ghetto girl” would only come out of her if someone hit Jeffrey. She said that her sister will punch someone in the face if they say anything about her five children. Elisabeth said that the kids should be given time to work the issue out themselves. Joy said that she was bullied a lot as a child. One day a girl called Anita picked on her and Joy took her hands and bent her fingers back until she was screaming. The girl never picked on her again.

The next topic was the amount of millions of dollars that celebrities are paid by magazines for photos of their new babies. Joy said that she understands the $1 million for Nicole Ritchie because it was a phenomenon because the kid probably weighed more than her. Sherri asked Elisabeth if she would take money for pictures of Taylor. Elisabeth said that no one would care to see them, but if people can find good causes to give the money to, they should. Joy said that people going into show business should that they will be followed by paparazzi and you have to protect yourself.

The next topic was sexual incompatibility and its affect on marriage. Unfortunately (or fortunately?) I could not hear part of the conversation because my channel was conducting a test of the emergency broadcast system. Anyone who wants to fill everyone in on whatever they talked about in the comments, please do so. When the conversation resumed, Whoopi was talking about how sometimes women don’t have a high sex drive because the have become like the Sahara. Elisabeth said, “Aren’t there products for that?” Whoopi said that is not always enough and you need to work on it. Sherri said that men want sex more when they are stressed or having other problems. Joy said that sex is a panacea for everything for men.

Sherri said that sometimes you just want to cuddle, but then the man wants to touch “your boobies.” Joy said that men don’t understand foreplay. Joy repeated her joke that the rhinoceros is her kind of animal because they have a month of foreplay. Elisabeth said that she doesn’t understand sexy lingerie and how you wear it under your clothes. Sherri said that you just put it on to take it off. Elisabeth said, “I just get naked.” Sherri said that is how she got the two kids.

Joy said that menopause is bad because you are so hot and don’t want them on you. Joy said that the doctor said if she was that hot to get on top. She said that it is easier to just get a vibrator and a ceiling fan. Whoopi said that hormones cause you to look at the person you love and say, “Where did you come from?”

Yunjin Kim from Lost appeared on the show. She said that she would be killed or fired if she reveals if her character gets of the island. She said that they will find out in next week’s episode and we will meet all of the Oceanic 6. She said that she loves the character of Locke and would love to play him if she was an older white man.

Yunjin was a big star in Korea and she said that it was different there because there was no paparazzi. It was her dream to work in Hollywood and make it there. She said that even four years ago there were not many Asian actors on television.

When she was younger she loved to watch Little House on the Prairie. When she moved to America with her parents, she thought her life would be like that and they would have horses and be poor, but have one another. When she landed in JFK airport, she was disappointed that it looked just like Seoul.

She is single and doesn’t have a type. The last time she was on The View, Barbara Walters was going to fix her up with a man, but she never called Yunjun to set it up. Whoopi said that they would call Barbara up now and talk to her about it.

The next segment on the show was “Live like the Rich & Famous,” which featured Michael Fazio, a professional concierge. Here are some ways that you can live like the rich and famous, without spending a lot of money:

* Flyclear: get sped through secturity in 17 major airports; $99

* Sitter City: online website where you can find babysitters; $95/year

* PumpOne: virtual personal trainer you can download to your video ipod; $19/workout

* Gilt: invitation only web network that holds secret sales of top designer clothing; go to this link at Gilt and get invitation by virtue of being viewer of The View.

* Magic Kitchen: home delivery meal service; $100-180/week for two people

* To get reservations at booked restaurants, be polite, look for last minute reservations

* Home Exchange: swap homes with someone for a vacation

  1. Lajet Says:

I’ve always thought Rosie was incredibly talented and smart, but the more I see, the more I’m learning she was even more so than I thought, and BTW, I thought she was a bit of a bully as moderator, and she went too far, so I don’t say this out of some sympatico with her beliefs. I also think she makes public conversations that should be kept private.
However, it’s is obvious she understands what is entertainment and how to be a hostess of a talk show, and lots of other things. I also think there were people intentionally pushing her buttons. She cares about doing a 1st class job and works hard. And she is entertaining! The show needs total revamping (I’d keep Sherri, but start over with everyone else.) Either make it a coffee klatch and talk about stuff people know about, or make it the equivalent to talk shows of what Frasier, or M.A.S.H was to comedy. Doesn’t always have to be politics. There’s lots of interesting stuff in science, fashion, law, education, etc. Much as I came to dislike Star, I thought she was great at the beginning. I’ve heard they are interested in Cindy Crawford (so who is leaving?). Maybe adding Gloria Allred, or Lisa Bloom, or Marcia Clark (who would leave next?).

  2. May Says:

I enjoyed today’s show. Joy made me spew my coffee with her “get a vibrator and a ceiling fan”. Whoopie added her funny 2 cents with looking over at the guy (while in hot flash mode) and saying “where did you come from”? Those two crack me up. When they were talking about mistakes politicians make, EH didn’t want to admit that McCain made any. She was at the ready with her, “He didn’t mean it that way” carp. Whoopie said that he also stepped in deep doody. Lajet says that they are interested in Cindy Crawford, Gloria Allred, etc. I’d like to see Gloria or Marcia…what a show that would make. First get rid of EH!

  3. Rachel Says:

“The show needs total revamping (I’d keep Sherri, but start over with everyone else.)”

NOOOOO! Please don’t give my girl Joy the boot!

I really don’t think the show can, or even should be revamped; if you get rid of Joy, Babs and even EH, it just won’t be the View anymore.

I actually enjoyed the show today, but I think that is because Babs was so annoying yesterday, that in contrast it made today’s show look real good.

But no, I wouldn’t want the View with a brand new cast (though another new set wouldn’t hurt). Especially since both Whoopi and Sherri have been growing on me lately.

I just hope that Sherri doesn’t spoil it for me with a “the Earth is flat” like comment. But she’s impressed me quite a bit in the last few weeks.

  4. Lajet Says:

    CLARIFICATION.
I have heard that the View is interested in Cindy Crawford. I don’t know what the role would be.
Gloria Allred, Marcia Clark etc were just my fantasy. I really think having a lawyer on the panel was good - and really enjoyed Star at first. Then she morphed (I think she has acknolwedged that.) I was trying to think of a high profile, intelligent yet kind attorney - not a screecher.

  5. Sandy Says:

I didn’t see the show today , so am awful grateful to Winnie, as always, for the recap.
Sounds like it was a good show.

I agree with E.H. Hilary should stay in the race as long as she thinks she has a chance to win. However my opinion is not based on a Republican strategy. Simply i like Hilary. Why give up if there is a chance?

I agree with Rachel, I wouldn’t want to see the View totally revamped. It wouldn’t be the View, it wouldn’t be the same. I would get use to a new host, I’m sure, but for now…
I like all of the Host, and I think they each add something unique to the show. It has it’s boring days, yes, but there are more days that I really enjoy it.

  6. ShannonP Says:

I’m opposite, I’m starting to feel less favorable towards Rosie. Maybe it will pass. She is always so gloomy and woe is me on her blogs lately and yet she doesn’t seem to do anything about it. And the way that she always implies what she is thinking without flat out saying it is just growing older by the day.
I’ve always been a big defender/supporter of her. It’s just a change in the way I’ve been seeing it lately, but like I said, maybe it will pass.
As for the show, I like Joy on it. And Sherrie is growing on me. Whoopie and EH I could do without.

  7. Dee Says:

In defense of Rosie, she might be suffering from SADS. This time of year is not good for those with Seasonal Affective Disorder and the fact that she even makes an attempt to respond to her peeps is laudable. I don’t find her messages too cryptic, but I do wish she would ban the trash that keeps posting hate towards her…why she gives it oxygen I will not attempt to understand.

After watching WG struggle hosting this year I realize how well Rosie performed the role. There isn’t a day I don’t miss her or her old show. I also miss Star, she was intelligent and that is what the show could use these days. EH and her “McCain will make us safe” is sounding like a repetitive parrot. It was under her teams watch that we had the last disaster. Gah I wish they would send her to the locker room for good.

  8. Sandy Says:

I want to defend Rosie as well. I am familiar with the ups and downs of someone who has or is suffering from depression and SAD. (A close relative of mine)
It some times comes in waves, and someone may be bright and happy and content for periods of time. Then just out of the blue, or even some small ocurrance, the darkness can take over again. It takes patience and understanding. A person who suffers from bouts of depression hates it, and it is a struggle to control. It’s when they need there fans, or loved ones the most.

I have so often wondered why Rosie post the very negative, some times awful comments about her. Only she can answer that question.

[...] on The View by LiRa Yunjin Kim, who plays Sun on Lost, was on The View yesterday and Winnie from WatchingTheView has the recaps to this particular episode. Or watch this video below, from [...]

  10. ShannonP Says:

It would be hard to hear so much negative stuff about yourself, we only see a tiny glimpse of the amount she must get. But she feeds into that, she responds to it. You can choose to feed the positive or choose to feed the negative. And in taking the time to answer the negatives, there is that amount less of time to answer the fans that come every day just hoping to get an answer and they have positive questions or general questions.
She has so many opportunities that “normal” people don’t get. Most people with SAD can’t afford a sun lamp (or an entire room of them like Rosie could), or a whole house to paint art in, vacations when they want, or no job to do whatever you want during the day, or a wife and staff that takes care of absolutely everything for you.
She gives the advice to move, shower, get out but she doesn’t seem to take that advice herself very much.
She eats junk food, doesn’t exercise that I can tell from her Q&A’s. When you have SAD or depression and you do those two things, it just makes it worse. Exercise has been proven to counteract depression. So many seemingly depressed and desperate people tune into her blog, it would be nice to see her be a more positive influence. Not that it’s her responsibility to be, just saying it would be nice. I think a lot of it is just unresolved pain.
And don’t get me wrong, I also see that she is a very generous and kind person with a big heart. And I would love to have that new puppy of hers!

  11. jackie gossett Says:

I just read all the notes above from faithful View watchers. I cannot believe how many of them feel as I do… Whoopi and Elizabeth need to be replaced for the good of the show. When is Barbara or Bill going to realize that. I say offer Elizabeth an early retirement.

  12. Stacee Says:

    Well said, ShannonP!

  13. Aileeny Says:

Two mothers got arrested for fighting at Chucky Cheese because one child hogged the video game. Sherri said that Chucky Cheese is a scary place and some of the other parents scare her. She said that “ghetto girl” would only come out of her if someone hit Jeffrey. She said that her sister will punch someone in the face if they say anything about her five children.

OMG!! when does a mother have to worry about your child in Chucky’s!!! Thats a sad story to tell if you dont feel safe in a place that is designed for children. My only issue with Chucky’s is how much money am I gonna spend!!! I love how they monitor the doors, who can come in and who can leave!! ( I can only thank god their is not a bar in the friggin place!!) lol sorry for Sherry that she has an issue, its not an issue where i live and we have to be sensitive to logistics for some peeps. ok that being said.. I cant see myself punching someone in the face but getting satisfaction of telling someone off with intelligence. (we know how hard that is when you are seething with anger)

May.. that made me crack up too. Joy is tff.

Ok on the Rosie issue, i was originally dismayed by Lajets comment on Rosie making comment on issues and her not backing it up or doing something about it. My first thought was Rosie is reluctant to support any candidate or take on a cause that is not hers for fear of the cause retribution of Billoturdo and the rest of the media. I think she is responsible for the cause and effect. The same reason she is not supporting any candidate at this point becuase it can be used against the candidate. That is Rosie 101 in todays world. But I do get what you are saying.. she led us here and we want more.. but unfortunately.. she is smarter and wiser and from my perception trying to be responsible for peeps she supports.. be that as it may… I do agree with others that she suffers from conditions that would benefit from exercise and dieting. But Rosie is human. We cant put her on a pedastal and expect pure role model. She is as flawed as the rest of us and does not resist to temptation. She has issues that we are privelidged to know and her thinking process is her own.. Lets not judge .. no way are lives are in perfect shape and judge someone who is the same as us but has celebrity status. She does have the venue of her blog but she is not accredited with phd’s of sorts to preach.. its what u take away a deal with the real person. Flaws or not..

    I’m just saying..

  14. anonymous Says:

    re: Rosie –
also she is in a scary position when severely depressed people write her for advice. She handles it well, I think; thank goodness she doesn’t play doctor or shrink and try to diagnose people. She doesn’t ignore them, either. What on earth would we do in her situation if strangers were writing us with the kinds of comments she gets?

Yes she mentions eating junk food but she also mentions attempts to eat well sometimes. I don’t draw conclusions that the microcosm we see of her life on her blog & by her abbreviated answers to her fans is an indication of how how she lives 24/7. We don’t know that off camera she might well be making attempts at exercise and eating healthfully compared to other times in her life when she has not.

And even though she has the luxury of time and money to buy all the external things & have the setup that can help with depression, let’s not judge her and conclude that she therefore should not be depressed. It’s not always so neat and tidy and black and white (having had severely depressed people in my family, I know a bit about this).

In the end, we really have no clue what the total and real story is with her life, her struggles.

  15. ShannonP Says:

Okay people that say let’s not “judge” Rosie, does this mean I’ll never see a “judgement” about EH or BW from you anymore on here? lol

  16. Anonymous Says:

By “let’s not judge”all I meant is llet’s not draw conclusions about her life based on the small slice of it we see on her blog or in her brief answers in the q&a. I would feel the same about EH or any celebrity. My comments were not politically based. They were addressing Rosie’s health and lifestyle and things like that. Since EH and BW don’t have blogs and talk to their fans the way Rosie does, I’m not sure the comparison is quite apt. I think since Rosie’s blog is so accessible to her fans it makes many of us sometimes feel we know more about her than we do, and maybe we lose sight of the fact that we really are only seeing a sliver.

  17. Dee Says:

I wouldn’t go to EH’s Dreft blog or BW’s either, as I am not a fan. I would ignore them just like I ignore Drudge. I do watch The View, infrequently, based on a guest or topic and I do like Sherri and Joy. I will give my opinion when EH and BW flip my switch on the show…

I think Rosie helps many who go to her blog and it is sad to think that people check it out just to criticize…it is a strange way to get one’s jollies. I imagine she responds to them to expose the ugly side of her celebrity.

Rosie does yoga and she is now tap dancing, she goes swimming in Florida so I don’t see that she is not exercising. Her drug for dulling the pain is food, many of us share the same addiction. As for the SAD light, it doesn’t work for everyone…I have one in my cellar covered in dust. On topic, I do miss Rosie on the show but not at the expense of giving EH publicity!
