The View May 13th Recap: William Shatner
Whoopi Goldberg started The View today talking about the Tony nominations which came out this morning. She will be hosting the awards show, but she prefers “guide” to “host.” She then read many of the nominees.
Then Whoopi said “Let’s talk about the damn Bachelor.” Elisabeth said that the finale was “truly special.” She was upset that the man called the woman “monkey” when he proposed. Sherri wanted him to pick the other woman because he said that he was falling in love with her and there was more passion. Joy said that he will marry the one woman, but have sex with the other. Elisabeth disagreed, saying that he called “monkey” a great lover. Whoopi said that “monkey”’s father Lorenzo Lamas would probably not approve of the bachelor calling his daughter a “great lover” on television. (although she used another word that got bleeped out, maybe “great lay”? Not sure). They talked about whether her had sex with all the contestants and Elisabeth hopes that they got the HPV vaccine.
They showed a picture of a 6-foot cow and Whoopi said that she wants to leave the planet. Sherri said that she would be scared to eat meat from that cow because it looks like it was on steroids. Elisabeth said it would make a great burger. Joy said that she worries about the gas from that cow and Whoopi said that they could use it for wind energy.
Today is the West Virgina primary. They showed a clip of a woman who said that she won’t vote for Barack Obama because she believes he is a Muslim. The reporter told her that he is not and she said that she doesn’t believe it. Whoopi said that you can drop something in people’s minds and it stays there. Joy said that if he is a Muslim, then why was he in the church with Jeremiah Wright? Whoopi said that they are using fear mongering. Joy said that most Muslims are “doing their jobs as people” and being Muslim should not be a negative thing. Whoopi said that there are radical Christians, radical Jews, etc. Elisabeth said that the first thing that is out there sticks longer whether it is true or not and people have to continue to try to scrape it off the wall. Whoopi said that it is like illegal immigrants who went from being a group of people to just being Mexicans. Elisabeth said that there is a lot of distraction politics going on and everyone needs to see past it. Whoopi then said (in a Valley girl voice) something to the effect that as long as the four of them are talking about things it will all be okay.
William Shatner wrote in his new book that Joy got him in trouble for talking about a photo shoot that he did for Playboy.com that his wife didn’t know about. He said that he didn’t lie to his wife, he just didn’t tell her. Whoopi said it is a sin of omission. Elisabeth said that men tell partial truths, where women will keep talking and making a story. Sherri said that there is a study that women use 30,000 words and men use 9,000. Elisabeth said, “that many?” Then said she was kidding and “I like boys.” She added that men are just more efficient in their words. Joy said that Steve does a narration of what is doing as he drives, like where he is going to park the car.
William Shatner appeared on the show to promote his new book Up Till Now. He used a fish eye lens when he took the photos for Playboy and had to stand really close to the woman. He sort of forgot about it and didn’t tell his wife and then Joy mentioned it on The View because they were online. He said “Who goes online?” Joy said, “People under 50.” Elisabeth and Sherri badgered him, telling him that he has to reveal everything to his wife.
He finally decided to do his memoir because he realizes that he may die and it was time to leave a legacy to his children and grandchildren. He admitted in the book that he likes to make up stories, but joked that it was that story that was made up.
On Star Trek there was a lot of jealousy and some of the cast mates didn’t like him. He said that it has been 40 years and it is time to let go. He still doesn’t really know why they didn’t like him, adding that George Takei disliked him the most.
He watches his own work “very infrequently” because he doesn’t like the way he looks. Whoopi told him that he looks good. A company bought his kidney stone for $75,000 which was donated to Habitat for Humanity. He also does the Wells Fargo charity horse show each year.
Despite Barbara Walters being out of town on her book tour, we were not spared having to hear more about her memoir Audition. In a taped piece, the ladies interviewed Barbara and her daughter Jackie Danforth. Barbara said that the chapter about her daughter was the most difficult one to write because they had a turbulent time when Jackie was a teen, including Jackie running away at one point. Jackie thought that Barbara should write about her because it is important for people to see that celebrities don’t have perfect lives. She respects that her mom could still put on a brave face everyday, even though she was putting her mom though hell. Barbara thought it would be helpful to other families who are going though similar things.
Jackie said that people don’t know that Barbara is vulnerable and questions herself all the time and always thinks that she could have done better. She said that having a famous mom was her life and she never knew any different.
Barbara said that Jackie also had to deal with feelings of being lost because she was adopted. Barbara had several miscarriages before deciding to adopt. They went out to dinner with a couple who was going to adopt a baby from a family if it was a boy. It was a girl, so Barbara and her husband were able to adopt her.
Jackie felt very lanky growing up and was so tall that the boys didn’t like her. It was another thing that led to her having low self-esteem. She said that her problems growing up were a combination of being a teenage girl, plus adding adoption and having a famous mom to that and having society having an idea of how they wanted her to be. She now runs a program that helps teenage girls in crisis called New Horizons. Barbara said that the key is staying in touch with one another and making sure that the child always knows that you love them.
At the end of the show, Whoopi read a quote from Eleanor Roosevelt that Hillary Clinton repeated “A woman is like a teabag. You never know how strong she is until you put her in hot water.”

I’m glad Joy said theres nothing wrong with being a Muslim and that most Muslims are just regular people. Its kind of sad that something like that even needs to be said but apparently it does. Muslims living in the U.S. must feel like a million bucks every time Obama is “smeared” for being a Muslim.
Winnie, too bad you didnt get your wish about Barbara’s book, lol. It seems that they will be talking about it everyday (even though they say its number 1). Seriously, how much more promotion does it need, BW’s been everywhere!

Thanks for the recap Winnie.
I had been interested in reading Barb’s book.
the sad thing is, I feel as if I have heard all that’s in it by now, so why buy it?
Many years ago I use to work for a Muslim family. They are just like anyone else. a few different customs is all. I became pretty fond of the woman. Such a sweet and intelligent woman.
i don’t live anywhere near them any more, and I often wonder how they are handling all this anger & fear towards Muslims, in our country. The misconceptions that some people allow themselves to believe is just amazing.

Before Barbara turned The View into a non-stop promotional tool for her book I was actually thinking about reading it. I love reading biographies, and I thought hers might be interesting. But now I have reached a point where I feel like it has been crammed down my throat so much that I don’t think I ever want to read it.

I think anybody who is nonchiristian who runs for president will come up against this pregidous. (anti islamic sentiment is just very prevelant) i remmeber pundinets saying jhon kerrys running mate being jewish migth effect or might have effected him. it does make me sad to hear these bad things about muslims but i also know if peole got to know more muslims they would no longer feel this way.
ps. funnily enough this same woman would proably in the next breath say she does not like his pastor.

Ok on the Muslim issue….
They have 3 Core Tenants
- Charity
- Tolerance
- Justice
The majority of the Muslims dont agree with the fundamentalist or militants. The Taliban or Al Qaeda. They fear them as much as westerners do and its the reason for the poverty in Afghanistan or Pakistan and now spreading to other countries. The wrong thing here is that our strikes and missions in these countries dont shed a good light on our country since we are not spending money to rebuild these countries or education after we bomb their delicate resources. We are leaving the poor even poorer and making the civilians worse off. We have to address securtiy in all nations but we have a responsibility to the people who dont share the beliefs of the people we are attacking. We cant label them as collateral damage and walk away. We must support the people of the islam belief and keep them close to our vest and ensure that we are friendly not just in words.
I have a suggestion peeps. I have a great book for you to read that is totally unbiased.
“Three Cups Of Tea” (a best seller) the life of Greg Mortenson in his humanity ways of building one school at a time to slowly eliminate ignorance and provide education which eventually will educate people and eliminate recruiting for Madraassas which are for the poor with no options. The Madrassas only educate religion and not science, english or math which these children dont have a chance but become recruited by terrorists. With Greg Mortinsons schools, they are non religious or teach western methods and his only purpose is to educate to allow the villagers to bring home the education and further teach. Its such a good read. and makes you want to help. It also broadens your mind and not rely on propoganda. Ok.. just one more time.. “Three Cups of Tea” Greg Mortenson.. get it peeps.. I hope it changes you. It did me..,
I’m just saying………

“I’ll never watch The Bachelor again after seeing him pick Shane.”
I was very happy with the ending. I’m glad he picked the one who was nice to everyone instead of the one who kept insulting others.

msroncon: What do you mean you’ll never watch it again after he picked Shaye? The season is over with. Matt and Shayne aren’t going to be on the future seasons, it’ll be a whole new set of people who have nothing to do with either one of them. I’ve watched seasons before where I didn’t like who he picked in the end but then I figured, Oh well, the next season will have all new people and I’ll never have to see these people again.

“Elisabeth said that there is a lot of distraction politics going on and everyone needs to see past it.”
Then why don’t you look past Wright, Elisabeth? Distraction is distraction.

“Elisabeth said that men tell partial truths, where women will keep talking and making a story.”
I dislike the way Elisabeth portrays how women act. She calls them manipulative. Now they are storytellers. Her description of women give all of us insight into, as Star says, “her true character.”
