The View May 15th Recap: Patrick Stewart, Kristen Alderson, Brandon Buddy, and Robyn

by Winnie McCarthy

patrick-stewart-macbeth-the-view.jpg The first topic today on The View was that Sherri Shepherd’s former boss and co-workers, from when she was a legal secretary, were in the audience. Sherri was always late to work then and still is now. She always thinks it will take less time than it actual does to get to work. Whoopi Goldberg said that in her contract it says that she is not allowed to be at the show later than 9:01 a.m. Joy said that was probably because they were worried about her coming late from her radio show. Whoopi added that it only takes her six minutes to get ready.

John Edwards endorsed Barack Obama. Joy called them the “dreamboat” ticket because they both looked so good. Elisabeth said that Dennis Miller said it was like an endorsement from Ryan Seacrest. Elisabeth said that she doesn’t want to date the president. Whoopi said that she would like the president to have at least a drop of charisma. Elisabeth said that John McCain cracked some jokes today in laying out his whole plan. He said that he will work with anyone to make the country better. Barack Obama called apologized for calling a female reporter sweetie. Whoopi said that she calls everyone sweetie or baby when she doesn’t know their name.

Bill Geddie doesn’t like when younger women call him sweetie. Joy said it is better than “Baldy.” Whoopi calls Bill, “The great bald one.” Sherri doesn’t like it when people tell her she is cute. Whoopi doesn’t like when people tell her she is “so articulate.” Elisabeth said that her grandmother was insulted when someone called her cute because she had not lived that long to be called cute. Joy said that it is the intention behind the words that are important.

A New Jersey woman fell from a cruise ship. The video footage showed it was an accident. Whoopi said that people initially thought it was the husband who pushed her. Joy said that the midnight buffet is what really what kills you on a cruise. Sherri stood on a railing on a cruise and then got scared, realizing that no one would know if she fell. Joy said that if you go on a cruise with an abusive husband he could push you in. Elisabeth said that people always end up dumping the body into the sea, so this way you can skip a step.

The next topic was American Idol. The “two Davids” are left. Elisabeth and Sherri loved Fantasia’s performance, but Simon Cowell did not. Elisabeth told Whoopi that she has to watch the finale. Whoopi told her that she likes her too much to lie to her and she knows she isn’t going to watch. She added that she has to do her hair that night.

Barbara Walters’ book has debuted at the top of the USA Today bestseller list.

Jack Black spilled the beans about Angelina Jolie being pregnant with twins. Elisabeth said that it is great, but people have issue with the fact that they are going to produce two more perfect children at the same time. Joy said that sounds like Nazism. Whoopi asked Elisabeth if she has looked in the mirror lately and that her children are gorgeous. Joy said that she likes ugly children too.

Whitney Thompson is the first plus-sized woman to win America’s Next Top Model. Whoopi said that plus-size is 14 and up and this model is only an 8 or 10 or something. Elisabeth said that they are plus-sized compared to the negative size women on the runway. Joy said that she is a big and tall skinny bitch.

Patrick Stewart appeared to promote his role in Macbeth on Broadway, for which he has been nominated for a Tony Award. He said that if you are not involved with the show, it is bad luck to quote from the play. He learned the speeches from Macbeth when he was young, but didn’t understand a lot of the words.

The show involves a lot of blood and he still has it stuck under his fingernails and it won’t come off. One night after the show, he was walking down the street and he saw policemen looking at two men’s hands and he got nervous they would ask to look at his and they would wonder where the blood came from.

They showed a clip of Patrick and Whoopi together on Star Trek: The Next Generation. Patrick said that he had a booger hanging out of his nose. Whoopi said that she would have told him about it at the time because she wouldn’t be able to go on with him like that. Patrick was intimidated by Whoopi when she came on the show because she had just won her Oscar. He loved doing the scenes with her.

In the last scene of the last X-men movie, following the credits, it suggested that his character will return, despite being killed off.

Patrick lost his hair at a young age and used to wear a toupee to auditions. He used to audition with it and then take it off and do the piece again. Once he auditioned for Laurence Olivier and after the audition he asked Patrick to put the toupee on and take it off again, as that was apparently the only thing that impressed him about the audition.

Kristen Alderson and Brandon Buddy from One Life to Live were also on the show. Their characters are dealing with teen pregnancy and May is Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month. Kristen, who is 16, was a little nervous about the storyline at first, but they were grateful to help out other teens with the story. The storyline has sparked a lot of conversations with her friends at school. She got her first kiss on the soap opera. Kristen has been blogging about the storyline and has gotten great feedback from teens.

Brandon said that his character is living in a dream world and that it isn’t the reality that most teen boys stay with their pregnant girlfriends. His character wants to stay because it will be his new family, after his father passed away. Kristen said it is a reality that teens plan to use protection, but the circumstances of the situation do not result in implementation of that plan.

Marisa Nightingale from the National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy appeared on the show. She said that parents should watch the show with their children and talk about the issues that it brings up. Their group focuses on prevention and encourages parents and teens to talk about preventing pregnancy. Joy said that she assumes their group supports Roe v. Wade and Marisa said that they support prevention.

Singer Robyn performed the song “Cobrastyle” from her self-titled album. Her band members wore big bear heads.

    Dear Sherri, Joy and Whoopi:

If you are going to discuss politics, please make sure that the information stated is factual. Senator Obama appeared on your show and discussed what his plans were for America. He has also talked about them during the debates. I find it very disturbing that you allow false information to be put out there, without even challenging it.

The endorsement from John Edwards is a big deal, and to allow TLB to read a joke(that fell flat) By Dennis Miller was tasteless and uncalled for.

She’s using the same talking points on Obama that she used on John Kerry. “He’s the most liberal and he doesn’t have plan.” How about telling her that McCain won’t support the new GI bill and he opposed the “equal pay bill for women.”

I find certain hot topics entertaining… Like the fluff stuff… Angelina Jolie etc. Yet when you’re discussing issues like the war, the candidates positions and voting records, please be factual. Some people believe that if it’s said on TV it must be true.

It seems to me that TLB has free reign to say whatever the hell she wants, and she is rarely challenged on her misleading remarks. How about asking her for her source for the information.

You can read the posts on this blog and understand the frustration felt by so many viewers. Why won’t you guys stand up to her and say here’s where you’re wrong. Once in a while you’ll do it, but that’s just not enough for me. Joy asked Obama how is he going to handled being swift-boated and he said he will respond “swiftly, forcefully and truthfully.”
Maybe you guys should take his advice and do the same.
    .

  2. Linda21 Says:

Rainlillie, wonderful post… my sentiments exactly! I just wonder if Whoopie, Joy & Sherry read this. Hmmmm, hope so.

  3. Jenn Says:

    you go :)

  4. Barb Says:

When Obama was on, didnt Elizabeth say she wanted to volunteer to work on his campaign with sherry? I guess she got an earful from her buddy Hannity for that..cause now she is nothing but hatred and venom for him..

  5. Dana Says:

rainlillie, I’m 100% in agreement with you.
Whoopi and Joy are far too intelligent to continue sitting there while EH gets her stupid unfair comments in.

  6. Dana Says:

I just had a realization. I’m more annoyed with Joy and Whoopi for allowing EH to continue on with untrue facts, and flip flopping opinions than I am with EH’s ranting of untrue facts and flipflopping opinions.

  7. Lajet Says:

Rainlillie - great post! I know we can’t email the cohosts anymore, but is there some address (or addresses) we could all send this too. Imagine if they got a handful of these every day!

    Couple other comments:
I do not think Sherri is dumb. As a general rule it takes a good deal of intelligence to have a well-developed sense of humor - and she is the funniest of the bunch! I even had a school principal once tell me that a student’s sense of humor is a very good gross measure of their intelligence. Secondly, if she was dumb, we wouldn’t be seeing the learning curve that we have all observed. It’s been pretty steep! I think she was naive, and not real sophisticated. Happens to a lot of us, but not the same thing as dumb.

Although Sherri is what kept me coming back to The View, after yesterday I wasn’t even tempted to watch it today (and sounds like it was a good thing - more garbage in, garbage out) Heck, I don’t even have to tune in to see what EH will say, and what the others won’t do in response. I’ll keep coming here (Thanks Winnie for carrying on!), and when I learn that things have improved, I’d love to return to see Sherri.

  8. Sarah Says:

I think no one corrects EH at this point because they know if they do they will be crucified by FoxNews the way Rosie was. Apparently no one can upset poor wittle Elisabeth. It’s absolutely ridiculous that FoxNews is trying to portray EH as some wounded child who is being picked on by the big bad liberals. They are all adults at that table, and I am sick to death of EH getting the kind of free pass that would be given to a child. I’m embarrassed to be in the same age category as her.

  9. ShannonP Says:

Sarah, if that is the case it is truly pathetic that a group of women would let that sexist network and a bunch of white old pervs dictate what they say or don’t say on the show. Doesn’t BG do enough of that already?
I have thought before that is why Whoopi acts like she is so cool, hip, with it.
Sometimes Rosie rubbed me the wrong way, but I always respected that she didn’t really let morons like Trump or Bill O’Reilly slow her down. Speaking of, that latest video released of him all pissy was true entertainment and when I watched it I thought how amused Rosie must have been to see it.

  10. Sandy Says:

I did not get to see the show. At this point I’m in a rush, and I haven’t even read the full recap…thanks Winnie.
i just want to say a few quick things.

This is why I think of the View more as entertainment, and opinions only, rather than a factual show.
I’m not saying that they shouldn’t have their facts straight on certain issues.
    Just that they don’t always.

Also I agree 100% with Lajet far as Sherri is concerned. I believe her to be far more intelligent than some give her credit for. :)

I agree, great post rainlillie. Even though we don;’t always agree, I admire her passion for what she believes. as well as the time and effort she puts into her cause. :)

  11. Random Musings Says:

I watched today. I don’t often watch any more and depend on Winnie to find out what has happened. Most of the “hot” topics today were silly….and uninteresting. The political discussion was the same old, same old.

I have the feeling, after listening to BW in one of her interviews, that the ladies have been muzzled, except for Elizabeth. All BW could say was how much the ladies love each other now…leaving me to think that Joy and Whoopi are doing an all star acting job!

    Good points, Rainlillie, as usual.

  12. Stacee Says:

    From the recap:
“Elisabeth said that it is great, but people have issue with the fact that they are going to produce two more perfect children at the same time.”

Who are the “people” she is referring to? Is she talking about herself?

Rain, you are spot on. I totally agree.

  13. Sarah Says:

“Sarah, if that is the case it is truly pathetic that a group of women would let that sexist network and a bunch of white old pervs dictate what they say or don’t say on the show. Doesn’t BG do enough of that already?”

I think it’s sad. I’m not sure I would use the word pathetic. I did really admire the way that Rosie stood up to EH and did let how FoxNews would try to portray her stop her from speaking her mind. However, with the exception of Whoopi, none of the others on the show have the kind of star power that allows them to get away with that. Sherrie is the new person, who doesn’t have a lot of fame to back her up, so I’m sure she figures that she is easily replaced (I personally enjoy her, but I don’t think TPTB at The View give a crap what I as the viewer likes). I think if Sherrie raised too much of a fuss they would replace her quickly. Joy has been on longer, but she really isn’t a celebrity outside of The View, so I think she would be removed quickly as well if she caused too much trouble with EH. So I’m cutting them some slack for not putting EH in her place. I wish someone would stand up to her, but I understand why they don’t. I mostly blame BW and Bill Gedes for allowing EH’s tantrums and bullying to swallow the show.

  14. Erika Says:

I thought Robyn’s performance was super cool and kind of alternative for the View. I liked the bear heads too-ha.

I think EH’s comment about Brangelina’s kids was lame. I hate how she discounted the adopted children. Zahara is beautiful too and the boys are cute. I’m not really an AJ fan, but Whoopi was pushing it when she implied EH is as good-looking.

Yeah, and since when did Obama NOT have plans for the country’s future? EH is whack.

  15. Sarah Says:

“Who are the “people” she is referring to? Is she talking about herself?”

It’s really irritating how EH seems to have appointed herself the “voice of the people.” I wish that someone would explain to the little twit that some of us are happy enough in our own lives that we don’t feel the need to begrudge other people their 2 babies. I think she’s getting her ideas about what the people think from random celebrity tabloid sites which are notorious for being filled with comments by people who seem a little angry and immature.

I think at this point the only thing that keeps me hanging on to this show is that I can come here and discuss the show. The comments section on this site is always infinitely more interesting and intelligent than the show.

  16. msroncon Says:

I think that someone who had an extra marital affair with her co-star and then proceeded to get pregnanat not just once, but now twice and twins too boot, should not be praised or acknowledged.

The affair thing is what I have an issue with.

And sorry, but I do not see anyting beautiful about Angelina Jolie. I think instead of bringing more children in the world she should try to patch her own family relations up with her father. Then maybe she could try to redeem herself as a role model for some people.

  17. misslingdow Says:

    Go Sarah!

  18. ShannonP Says:

Msroncon I see it differently. I don’t think of an affair is so black and white. Ideally they would never happen, but we are human. I personally haven’t had one, but I have been cheated on when I was younger. My fiance married the woman he cheated on me with, and I feel no hard feelings about that now. If he had just cheated for sex and been a womanizing pig I would have. But he met someone he fell in love with and went a different direction and I understand that.
But with the Brad Pitt/Jennifer Anniston Angelina Jolie thing, I don’t really feel the need to judge them. I wasn’t in Brad and Jennifers home to know what went on before it happened, if they were on the brink of breakup, what he told her about, what he tried to inspire or change in the relationship, any resistance there was etc. Sometimes in life you meet someone that you just connect with and it takes you to a better place or where you feel more yourself with and to me it seems that what happened with Brad and Angelina. It’s not like Brad cheated and then moved on to woman to woman. He seems to have found a purpose where he is at. You only live once, why do it in a relationship that you aren’t happy with. In Brad’s situation, just from what I get a feeling about, I think I would have made the same move he did. Not based on looks, just on purpose and excitement for life and fulfillment. I’m sure he felt bad about what he did. But should he have lived the rest of his life unhappy?
And they can afford to have kids and find happiness in being a family, so why would people hold that against them. I don’t understand that. They have adopted, they give a lot of money, do a lot of charity etc. Do you know her father personally to make the statement you made? Or is just based on what you have read in tabloids and seen on TV. What does her having kids have to do with patching things up with a man that you don’t know the history with or what her feelings about him are based on?
I don’t feel she owes it to anyone to “redeem herself as a role model” I think she is just living her life.

  19. Sarah Says:

“I think that someone who had an extra marital affair with her co-star and then proceeded to get pregnanat not just once, but now twice and twins too boot, should not be praised or acknowledged.”

But we don’t actually have proof that they did have an affair. It’s all just speculation. It’s not like when Frank Gifford cheated on his wife and there were actually pictures to prove it. I think it’s appalling that there are people making such huge assumptions and judgements about people when we don’t know the inside story. And I’m constantly amazed by how people can’t just let it go. This happened several years ago, all parties involved have moved on with their lives, and none of us know for sure what really happened. So I do think it’s nice they’re having twins, and I will not base my opinion about someone on tabloid gossip that has never been confirmed. And what in the world does having twins have to do with it, a person can’t plan to have twins, so I don’t understand your “twins to boot” comment.

“I think instead of bringing more children in the world she should try to patch her own family relations up with her father.”

The one thing has nothing to do with the other. A person’s life does not need to stand still just because they have a troubled relationship with a relative. And, again, people are making wild assumptions about things they know nothing about. I haven’t spoken to my grandfather in 10 years, does this mean I’m not allowed to continue having children? I think not. One of the reasons why I will never have anything to do with him again is because he’s a bitter, mean, hateful man who would fill my children’s lives with his toxic anger. Children deserve to be protected, and unfortunately sometimes relatives are the ones they need to be protected from. Perhaps AJ feels the same about her dad. Either way, we don’t know the inside story.

“Then maybe she could try to redeem herself as a role model for some people.”

I don’t believe that would change some people’s opinions. There are some people who seem determined to hate her and they will hate her no matter what. I’ve heard so many comments where people said they would have more respect for AJ if……and then they still don’t respect her anymore afterwards. There were people who said they would respect her more if she wasn’t opposed to have a biological child, then she did and she got all kinds of flak for that. Then there were those who said they don’t think she should adopt only babies and they would respect her if she adopted an older child, then she did and got tons of criticism for that. Then there were the comments about how “she should be helping her own coutnry” then she started helping people in NO and still got criticism. I’ve come to the conclusion that there are certain people who have just made up their minds to dislike her and they will dislike her no matter what she does. I pesonally don’t understand why somoene would want to waste so much time disliking someone they don’t even know, but if that’s how they want to chose to spend their time then that’s their choice. But I think it’s very, very sad to see people basing their opinions of someone on tabloid gossip.

  20. Lisa B. Says:

“I just had a realization. I’m more annoyed with Joy and Whoopi for allowing EH to continue on with untrue facts, and flip flopping opinions than I am with EH’s ranting of untrue facts and flipflopping opinions.”

    ITA!

Yep. Couldn’t agree with you more about this.
