The View May 1st Recap: Emilio and Gloria Estefan, Dean Obeidallah and Tissa Hami
Today on The View, Elisabeth Hasselbeck was absent. Whoopi Goldberg, who was sporting sunglasses today, said that Elisabeth was home with sick children. Barbara Walters signed 1600 copies of her book yesterday in Tennessee and got in late last night. Then she received the call from Bill Geddie that she needed to come in today.
The first topic was Paula Abdul’s on-air gaffe on American Idol where she criticized a song which she had not heard on the show. She had heard part of his song in rehearsal. Barbara said that they should be judging them live. Suddenly Whoopi realized that she had dark sunglasses on and could not see anything, so she took them off. Barbara said that Paula’s mistakes are part of what people tune in for. Joy said that it is like pulling the curtain back and showing that reality shows are not real. Sherri said it was not fair because she said his second song was not as charismatic and that could have stuck in the voters’ minds.
Brooke White got kicked off, cried, and said it would be rough on her. Sherri said that it is hard for them after the fame to go back to working at Rite Aid. Whoopi said that is how the industry is, some days you are hot and some days you are like “old baby poo.”
Whoopi said none of the ladies made People Magazine’s Top 100 Sexiest People list. They were also not on the Time Magazine list of the Top 100 most influential people. Sherri said that Barbara should have been on it because people always calls her when they need help. Whoopi accused Sherri of brown-nosing the boss. Barbara said that in 11 years, Joy has never talked about her that way. Joy agreed, saying “I have never kissed your ass.”
The View was nominated for Daytime Emmys for Best Talk Show and Best Host. The show has one once for Best Talk Show. Barbara said that they have had some interesting past years and now they are grim about it and are talking about maybe not even going. Barbara said that Sherri is doing the red carpet and then realized that she wasn’t supposed to announce it yet. Joy asked why and Sherri whispered that she hasn’t signed the contract yet. Sherri joked that she is fasting until the Emmys.
Other nominations for the show are best director, best hair and make-up, best lighting, and best writing for the “snappy introductions.” (Barbara’s words)
There is a new television show called Hurl where competitive eaters are put through physical challenges to see if they throw up. Joy said it is bulimia at its worst.
Authorities are now looking into whether boys at the polygamist compound in Texas were also being abused. They still don’t know how many husbands were at the compound because the DNA results are not back. Joy said that she is not surprised the boys are getting abused too because pedophilia is not about sex, but about power. She joked that she would also lock up all the farm animals in Texas.
They have found a woman in Austria who had many children by her father and they have been locked in the basement for 24 years. The mom said that she didn’t know what was going on all the time and her husband told her the child had runaway. Joy asked who delivered the children, asking whether they he was a pedophile and an obstetrician. Whoopi and Joy said that when they were growing up, everyone would know if someone wasn’t where they were supposed to be.
Hillary Clinton was on Bill O’Reilly last night and Barbara said she “held her own.” They showed a clip in which he said that her health plan would bankrupt the country. Whoopi said that she loves O’Reilly, but that the country is much worse under the current presidency than it was under Bill Clinton. Joy said that the reduction of the gas tax that McCain and Hillary Clinton are talking about will only save the average consumer $9 and change. Whoopi said that the sin tax on fast foot is not the answer and they should take the high fructose corn syrup out of food. Sherri said something about Elisabeth not being there and Barbara said that she can step into her role and Sherri said “No way” or something to that effect.
Joy is doing a benefit for ovarian cancer research at Caroline’s. Barbara said that her sister died of ovarian cancer.
Gloria and Emilio Estefan appeared on the show to promote their film Noventa Millas. In September they will celebrate their 30th anniversary. Gloria said that he keeps her laughing, adding that he is brilliant but very absent-minded. One time when they were out, he went to get the car when it was raining, forgot to go back and pick her up, and instead went home without her.
Gloria was a guest judge on American Idol a few times and the hosts never watched the rehearsals. She joked that maybe the song was so long that Paula thought it was two songs.
Gloria said that there have already been some changes in Cuba since Raul Castro took over. She thinks he is smarter and more capitalistic than Fidel.
Emilio said that their documentary will air tonight at the Tribeca film festival. Barbara told him to slow down because no one can understand him with his accent. Joy said that he sounds like a Spanish Jackie Mason. The film is about Cuban music. Joy asked them whether they speak Spanish or English at home when they are “into each other.” Gloria said that Spanish is much better for that or for arguing.
The next guests were Muslim comedians Dean Obeidallah and Tissa Hami. They appear in the documentary America At a Crossroads, STAND UP: Muslim American Comics Come of Age which will air on PBS. I thought they were both funny. I recapped some of the jokes, but they probably don’t read as funny.
Tissa, who was born in Iran but is now an American citizen, joked that her name is ancient Persian for “Damn I wanted a boy.” Dean said that since 9/11 his life has changed a lot, where prior he was just a white guy. Tissa joked that an airport official wanted to give her a body cavity search, but she was hoping to save that for her wedding night. She was stopped at customs because they thought her passport was fake. She said that if she was going to fake her passport, would she really leave her birthplace as Iran? Dean gives advice to other Muslims “Dress white, make your flight,” encouraging them to dress with clothes from Banana Republic when flying to the United States. He added that if they have a Middle Eastern accent they should add another accent, like Spanish or Italian to throw off the custom agent.
The View, Emilio Estefan, Gloria Estefan, Noventa Millas, Sherri Shepherd, Elisabeth Hasselbeck, Joy Behar, Barbara Walters, Whoopi Goldberg, STAND UP: Muslim American Comics Come of Age, PBS, Bill O’Reilly, Hillary Clinton, Dean Obeidallah, Tissa Hami

What a great show! Thank goodness I was flipping channels and saw that it was an EH free day. Gloria and Rosie are good friends and having the Iranian comics on when EH is pretty adamant about our enemies in the Middle East may have been a blessing for all.
Hopefully she will miss the taping for tomorrow too, I want to see Gwyneth and Robert Downey Jr so I will be tuning in. If she is on I guess I will mute it until the couch segment.;0
I love Sherri more and more, hope someone puts her in a sitcom so I can watch her w/o any white noise in the background.

I LOVE SHERRI! I wish EH would give her a word in edgewise when she’s there.

I had the thought that perhaps BW didn’t want EH snipping and chirping at the Estefans, they being the icon(s) that they are for 3 decades…I used to see their live Miami Expose shows twenty-something years ago right here in Miami.
I so don’t believe that EH was with sick children (and we know how BW lies) and called last night that her children were sick…..as kids CAN and DO make remarkably recoveries in very short periods of time. Perhaps she needed a mental health day or perhaps The VIEW needed that mental health day away from EH….more likely. In any event, a mellow day at TheView FOR ONCE!
I am also sure that enough BW friends have spewed to her about EH over the past nearly 4/5 years so don’t think BW is all that blind to the BS that goes on or the angle(s) that EH tries to come from.
And as long as there is any kind of press about EH, EH will succeed…they always say that NO PRESS is the problem staying famous. If we all stopped watching, the show would eventually SINK into oblivion. I read somewhere she has one more year on her contract….perhaps then…and only then will she depart The View….not soon enough for many of our liking(s).
Just my 2 cents worth…
Y’all have a nice day!!

I heard that on the view today Sherri said something like: “I’m NOT gonna be Elisabeth!”
Can someone fill in the context.

Never mind. Winnie covered it. I’m sorry Winnie; that was kind of insulting of me. I really appreciate your recaps and the segment I wanted was right in there!! As I suspected, it was a great quote! Wish I saw Sherri’s face when she said it.

Does anyone know why BW said: “congratulations”, to Joy ?
She said it just before she signed off @ 11:58 am.

Was pleasantly surprised when I saw 4 hosts come out and only 4 chairs. I raised my arms and did a loud All right!!! My dog looked at me like “Are you o.k.?” I felt serene throughout the show..no shouting, yelling with EH gone. May she take a loo-oo-ng vacation..say 2 yrs!! Bawa said something telling when she discussed Paula’s boo boo. Bawa said that’s why people watch to see mistakes and disagreements (or did I dream that?) which is why I think they like EH on to stir up trouble and get viewers. Maybe I’m wrong here but anyway if she were gone my blood pressure would go down quite a bit! I did enjoy the Iranian born comics..funny. I’ve seen him do stand up on tv before and he was hilarious!

Thanks Winnie, as always
I didn’t see the show today or yesterday.
It would be nice to see the View win an Emmy, I’d enjoy that. I like Ellen, she’s great, but I think the View hosts are very deserving.
would have enjoyed see Gloria and Emilio.
I would have loved seeing Dean and Tissa
Thanks Winnie for recapping some of their jokes.

I was so excited when Whoopi made her comment about getting high fructose corn syrup out of our foods! Hopefully someone will listen to that!
thanks winnie for another great recap!

Thoroughly enjoyed the topics part today. What a difference without EH It was actually enjoyable. Loved it. Hope she stays home for a few weeks or something.
It was like the old old View when it was good.

The show is a COMPLETELY different show without EH. I feel like everyone can breathe and relax. And we at home can have a tense free viewing. I didn’t have to mute the show even once today!

#7, May:
“Maybe I’m wrong here but anyway if she were gone my blood pressure would go down quite a bit! ”
Swear to god, mine did go down & I have proof! I tuned in, saw Baby Girl wasn’t there, and felt so happy and relieved. I only got to see bits of the hot topics because II had a doc app’t to go to, and found out my BP was the lowest it’s probably ever been. And it’s never high to begin with. Which is weird because lately we’ve had a ton of stressful stuff going on & it makes no sense my BP would be extra low today…. Coincidence? hmm. Oh my. How boring to talk about medical stuff. Sorry, folks! I did so enjoy seeing that table without her. Reminded me of how heavenly her maternity leave was.
I didn’t get to give it my full attention, so I could be wrong. But Ithought Sherrie said she wanted to be EH for the day and speak up for her side and that she said something about how she was just sticking up for her friend.
MiamiVision keep us posted with your 2 cents. I wondered when EH’s contract is finally up. Her agent is getting her so much extra work I wonder if it’s because he thinks ABC won’t sign her up again.
I didn’t hear Babs give kudos to Joy. Wonder what’s up.
There’s a reason why I don’t tune in to Rush and the Fox idiots. Hearing another view that is hateful, un-factual, and without reason isn’t something that enlightens me or makes me think. So that’s why it’s so pleasnat when EH is’t on the show. What others call “another view” is to me a tirade and temper tantrum.

Maybe they finally instructed her to take a day out and get a hold of herself. We sure needed that break from EH. Her maternity leave was divine. I tape the shows and then fast foward when I don’t want to have to listen to her.
She does seem to be picking up other jobs. Let her jump in front of the camera somewhere else.

DeeDee: I read *somewhere* a couple of months ago - that she has one-more year on her contract. That’s when I’ll re-tune back in, maybe.
I only catch the videos online and recaps/videos here, reading stuff online, and also lurk at TWoP but got banned there (I also was brand new there and had read the FAQs, and lurked for 4 months prior to registering, making only I think 3 posts in toto) for using too many exclamation points while responding to *smiley13* (who constantly defends EH and is probably her MIL or Tim, himself, posting there *lol*).
But what a control-freakish site that place is - one infraction only and banned for life to post on Admit It You Can’t Stand The View.
At least here, we’re free to punctuate as we want to. Thanks, Winnie! *S*
