The View May 20th Recap: Anderson Cooper and medical myths
The first topic on The View was what do you say to her daughter if she asks you if you voted for Hillary Clinton? Joy Behar said you tell her that a man took it from a woman and then they yelled at her for complaining about it. Elisabeth Hasselbeck said that she would love to make history, but that we need to vote to secure our future and she will have to tell her daughter that Clinton’s views did not line up with hers. Whoopi said that there may be a few women running or a whole bunch of Black people running in the future. Joy said that she wouldn’t vote for Phyllis Schlafly, who is anti-feminist, just because she is a woman.
Elisabeth showed pictures of each candidate giving a speech and analyzed the sign on their podium. She thinks that Hillary Clinton only has “Hillary” on her sign because she is running away from her husband’s name and that Barack has “Change” really big, but his name small because he doesn’t have a long voting record. She said that McCain has just his name. Whoopi said that is in case that is in case he forgets his own name. Joy asked if the McCain photo was an ad for Metamucil? Elisabeth said that is like her holding up the Hillary picture and saying it is ad for PMS medication. Joy said “or hormone replacement therapy.” Elisabeth said about Barack that “You can’t say ‘I love America, I love America, let’s change it.” Whoopi called that argument a “stretch” and said that Barack is saying he will be a change from Bush.
Whoopi then changed the subject to Dancing with the Stars. It wasn’t worth recapping.
Then next topic was the purity ball, which was held again this year. They talked about this last year, too. The daughters pledge to remain chaste until marriage and their father gives them a ring. Sherri said that it is commendable because many daughters do not have fathers they are that close with and wishes she could have done it with her father. Joy said that there is something that “skeeves” her out about it. Elisabeth used to go to father/daughter dances with her dad and it was nice to have that bond. Joy thinks that the daughters should have sexual conversations with their moms. Sherri said that her father sat her down and told her about boys and she is glad she had that conversation. Whoopi said, “Did it help?” Whoopi said that people will stumble and fall and even those who are not chaste are not “pure.” Elisabeth agreed saying that you can re-commit to being chaste. Whoopi said that it may be harmful because if they do have sex, they may not tell their parents. Sherri clarified that the daughters did not pledge to be chaste in this ball, but the fathers vowed to protect the daughters.
An autistic boy who is 6 feet tall and over 200 pounds was banned from church for being disruptive. They offered to give him a private church service. He has pulled girls into his laps, he goes into the parking lot and started cars, and spit on people. Elisabeth thinks they should help the family to help them get treatment and should not ban him from church because it is such a community. Joy said that she doesn’t know about church, but in a school if a child behaves that way, they should be taken out. She thinks that schools should have two teachers per classroom. Whoopi said that the decision has to be what is best for the group at the church.
The next topic was about whether we know enough about the health of the Presidential candidates. Elisabeth said where does it stop and it could violate their privacy. She asked if we need to know when someone’s menstrual cycle is? She said it is a slippery slope. Whoopi said that it only would matter if it affected their health. Sherri said that if the candidate is going to die, we need to know about it. She said that “no one has ever died of having their period, Elisabeth.” Whoopi said that people are concerned about the fact that McCain had cancer in the past. Joy said that when Paul Tsongas ran for President he said that his cancer was in remission, but then he died a year later.
CNN’s Anderson Cooper appeared on the show. When he came out he kissed each host on the cheek and Joy said that he doesn’t do that on CNN. He joked that he maybe given the opportunity he would. Joy said, “You’d kiss Wolf Blitzer?” and he joked “Sure, why not?” Cooper said that polls show that Hillary Clinton is going to do well in Kentucky and Barack Obama will do well in Oregon. Barack had 75,000 people at a rally in Oregon yesterday. Anderson thinks that you can tell your child that history was made no matter what this year, either first female, first Black, or oldest president.
Cooper said that it is speculation, but some possible candidates for vice-president for Obama are Hillary Clinton, Bill Richardson, Bill Webb, Joe Biden, and Sam Nunn.
Elisabeth asked him whether he thinks that the media has been biased against Hillary Clinton. He said that he is wary when people lump “the media” all together because that includes everyone and it is not like they all get together and plan a strategy. He gets the same amount of emails from people who say he is biased against Barack Obama that he does who say he is biased against Hillary Clinton. Joy said that there were misogynistic comments made early in the campaign on MSNBC. He said that he does not watch MSNBC and it serves her right for watching. Cooper said that the math is not in Clinton’s favor at that point. Despite that, he does not think that she will drop out tonight. He said the “million dollar question” is whether Clinton’s supporters will vote for Barack. He thinks that polls may not be accurate when they say they won’t vote for Obama because they are in the heat of the campaign.
Possible vice-presidential candidates for McCain are Mike Huckabee, Mitt Romney, or Joe Lieberman. Joy joked that Lieberman was a loser last time, so why would he want to. Cooper said that Condoleezza Rice has said “point-blank” that she does not want to be vp.
He thinks that the spoues are fair game if they are out acting as surrogates, but thinks that they should stick to the candidates and not their families.
Dr. Nancy Snyderman appeared on the show to talk about “medical myths.” She is the author of the new book Medical Myths That Can Kill You: And the 101 Truths That Will Save, Extend, and Improve Your Life. Here is some of what she had to say:
* Sugar does not cause hyperactivity in kids.
* The kind of ear wax that you have can predict whether you get breast cancer.
* The web is a good starting place for looking up health information, but it shouldn’t be your only source. (Whoopi asked this question because apparently Elisabeth is a hypochondriac and is constantly self-diagnosing herself with the help of the internet).
* Grilling red meat can increase cancer risk because a carcinogen is formed when the meat is charred.
* Don’t put medicines in bathroom because of the change of heat and humidity. Put them in the hall closet.
* Mosquitoes are the deadliest insects on earth (especially in other countries where malaria is present).
* The most important test for women is to get a pelvic exam.
* There is a broad spectrum of illnesses coming under the autism label and you should make sure that the doctor has eliminated all other possibilities like seizures, hearing problems, and behavioral problems.
* Headaches are rarely a sign of a brain tumor. (Sherri said that she gets a lot of headaches and Whoopi told her it is because her wigs are too tight).
She said that you can ask your doctor whether they will be your partner and they will listen to you. She said that you should prepare before you go to the doctor and take a tape recorder because you won’t remember half of what you hear. She said that people lie to their doctors about sex and smoking, but you have to tell the truth to your doctor.

RECAP: Elisabeth said about Barack that “You can’t say ‘I love America, I love America, let’s change it.”
RESPONSE: LOL You’re kidding! I’d love to see her talk to the Founding Brothers, or Lincoln, or a number of people - including McCain and Bush (anyone think Bush didn’t want to change things -HINT: think Iraq; taxes).
RECAP: Elisabeth thinks they should help the family to help them get treatment and should not ban him from church because it is such a community.
RESPONSE: Good thing EH is around to help us think of things nobody else would have thought of. LOL QUERY: Did the church really ban him from church, or just from a service in which neither the boy or hte congregation could worship under the circumstnaces. QUERY: Does EH have some inside information that indicates the church has don’t nothing to help the family get treatment?
RECAP: She asked if we need to know when someone’s menstrual cycle is?
RESPOSNE: Thanks for hte recap Winnie. THis is really funny today. Loved Sherri’s comeback!
You know, I’m learning to laugh at what EH says, instead of get angry. Great alternative. laughter is good.

I got to see the show today and I enjoyed it.
#1 lajet,
You know, I’m learning to laugh at what EH says, instead of get angry. Great alternative. laughter is good.
Yes!! Good for you. I’ve heard it said, and have read that laughter is the best medicine, and I agree. It makes you feel much better than anger does.
I think I understand what Elisabeth was trying to say with the posters,..but again I feel she didn’t make her point very clear.
Sherri really made an excellent point with the poster of senator McCain. Which i felt actually showed Elisabeth, and anyone else, that we sure can’t judge a candidate by a poster.
I agree with Sherri and Elisabeth. I like the idea of the father-daughter ball. Purity, or chaste, aside, it’s been my experience that fathers and daughters don’t spend that much time together. Especially talking about the topic of sex and males.
I believe we should know about the health of our presidential candidates, to an extent. We don’t want to elect a president with a serious medical issue or problem.
However, I understand the point Elisabeth was trying to make. Where do we draw the line?. Would all medical records be mandatory?
There are a lot of misconceptions out there concerning some medical problems.
i as well feel that there was some media bias concerning senator Clinton, but more so in the first several months of the campaign.
i like, and really enjoyed Dr. Snyderman.

The Keating Five were five United States Senators, who were accused of corruption in 1989, igniting a major political scandal as part of the larger Savings and Loan crisis of the late 1980s and early 1990s. One of the senators was John McCain (R-AZ), accused of improperly aiding Charles H. Keating, Jr., chairman of the failed Lincoln Savings and Loan Association, which was the target of an investigation by the Federal Home Loan Bank Board.
On Oct. 8, 1989, The Republic revealed that McCain’s wife and her father had invested $359,100 in a Keating shopping center in April 1986, a year before McCain met with the regulators.
The paper also reported that the McCains, sometimes accompanied by their daughter and baby-sitter, had made at least nine trips at Keating’s expense, sometimes aboard the American Continental jet. Three of trips were made during vacations to Keating’s opulent Bahamas retreat at Cat Cay.
McCain also did not pay Keating for the trips until years after they were taken, when he learned that Keating was in trouble over Lincoln. Total cost: $13,433.
When the story broke, McCain did nothing to help himself. When reporters first called him, he was furious. Caught out in the open, the former fighter pilot let go with a barrage of cover fire. Sen. Hothead came out in all his glory.
”You’re a liar,”’ McCain snapped Sept. 29 when a Republic reporter asked him about business ties between his wife and Keating.
”That’s the spouse’s involvement, you idiot,” McCain said later in the same conversation. ”You do understand English, don’t you?”
He also belittled the reporters when they asked about his wife’s ties to Keating.
”It’s up to you to find that out, kids.”
And then he played the POW card.
”Even the Vietnamese didn’t question my ethics,” McCain said.
The paper ran the story a few days later. At a news conference, McCain was a changed man. He stood calmly for 90 minutes and answered every question.
On the shopping center, his defense was simple. The deal did not involve him. The shares in the shopping center had been purchased by a partnership set up between McCain’s wife and her father.
But McCain also had to explain his trips with Keating and why he didn’t pay Keating back right away.
On that score, McCain admitted he had fouled up. He said he should have reimbursed Keating immediately, not waited several years. His staff said it was an oversight, but it looked bad, McCain jetting around with Keating, then going to bat for him with the federal regulators.
Meanwhile, Lincoln continued to founder.
In April 1989, two years after the Keating Five meetings, the government seized Lincoln, which declared bankruptcy. In September 1990, Keating was booked into Los Angeles County Jail, charged with 42 counts of fraud. His bond was set at $5 million.
During Keating’s eventual trial, the prosecution produced a parade of elderly investors who had lost their life’s savings by investing in American Continental junk bonds.
In November 1990, the Senate Ethics Committee convened to decide what punishment, if any, should be doled out to the Keating Five.
Lincoln’s losses eventually were set at $3.4 billion, the most expensive failure in the national S&L scandal.
In the end, McCain received only a mild rebuke from the Ethics Committee for exercising ”poor judgment” for intervening with the federal regulators on behalf of Keating. Still, he felt tarred by the affair.
Does anyone know how to email EH or how we can get into to her or the others on the view. Wasn’t there a time, when we could email the hosts?

PRIOR POST: However, I understand the point Elisabeth was trying to make. Where do we draw the line?. Would all medical records be mandatory?
RESPOSNE: I understand the point too, but I just can’t take her seriously anymore LOL. Why do I think that if Obama and Clinton were the old candidates, and McCain was hte young candidate, she would be claiming a “right to know.” I can’t prove it, but EH has lost the privilege or being taken at face value with me. She’s shown herself to believe what is convenient for her too often to believe she bases her stated opinions on anything but expediency.

RESPONSE: Thanks Sandy. I just had a (totally impractical) idea to make watching The View fun again. Come up with a list of common phrases, such as
-in a time of war
-Commander-in-chief
-commender-in-charm
-flip-flop
-liberal
-strong
-Reverend Wright
etc. (please add your ideas)
and then have a bingo board and see who gets to BINGO first.
Hmm. maybe also a square for
-sentence that goes on for more htan 30 seconds; -60 seconds.
-placing hand on chin
-EH interruptions
-JB interruptions
-WG interruptions
-SS interruptions
-BW interruptions
-questions of guests that take longer than 30 seconds to ask
Maybe even just calculate the above and then share the information under the day’s comments.

Ironically, because of “change”, EH is in the position to spout of her views. And vote. Guess we need a subtext in the Women’s Movement letting us know that the people that fought to have women vote didn’t love America.

i have to admitt i literally laughed when Eh said that about” i love amercia i love america lets change it” who knew she was such a comedian

“Elisabeth said about Barack that “You can’t say ‘I love America, I love America, let’s change it.”
That woman is truly an idiot. If you love something you want it to be the best it possibly can, and you cannot achieve that without first acknowledging the weak spots and then working to improve in those areas. I’m so sick and tired of her 5 year old viewpoint where in order to love something you have to bury your head in the sand and pretend like every aspect of it is sheer perfection. Grow up Elisabeth. This is real life, people’s lives are at stake, her children’s well-being is at stake.
Sorry for the rant, but it’s truly amazing to me when people say that if you love America you should want it to stay the same. If people never tried to change America then we would still have slaves, and she (as a woman) would have no rights. She wouldn’t even have the right to sit at her cushy job and spout off her ignorant, immature opinions. So she should thank her lucky stars that there were Americans who were brave enough to try to change America.

RESPONSE: Heck, there might not even be an America. Many of the colonists were very angry about the treatment from the English government (and since when does being angry mean you don’t love someone/something), but they loved England, their countrymen, and their homes in England.

# 5 lajet,
LOL, thanks for making me smile. I liked your idea.
Absolutely agree that America has made some great changes, and thank God for those Americans who were strong enough to fight for Liberty and Justice for ALL. …and who keep up that battle still today.
Change is often VERY just.
I would hope that Elisabeth agrees with that as well. I”m sure she does. I can’t immagine an American who doesn’t believe that.
I think many things just pop out of her month before she thinks them through clearly.

You have the bones of a great drinking game, imagine the state participants would be in after every show!!! Especially if they used EH interruptions!
