The View November 16th Recap: Keri Russell and Dr. Gadget

by

keri-russell-august-rush.jpgToday was the final day of budget week on The View. Today they all were wearing clothes from Kohl’s. Joy Behar will be guest hosting on Larry King Live on Monday. Sherri will be in Chicago on Saturday, co-hosting the Magnificent Mile Lights Festival. (I think that it is airing locally. I will watch it and give you guys a recap of how she does.)

Whoopi Goldberg said that she looked in a mirror and think that she looks like a “boulder.” Barbara Walters said that her own clothes don’t fit anymore and she used to be slimmer. Is it true that emotional eaters have a harder time dieting? Sherri said that she is an emotional eater and would have eaten her way through New York due to her loneliness if she were not diabetic.

Barbara told the story (again) about the way that her skinner friends eat, or rather, don’t really eat. Whoopi said that she could go days without eating, but she has a thyroid problem. Joy has been off of carbs for two weeks. She despises portion control. It is like stopping in the middle of sex when you are enjoying yourself. Whoopi lost 43 pounds on LA Weight Loss and she learned how to eat properly. She stopped eating that way, her body went into starvation mode and she put back on. Sherri has lost 18 pounds by eating right and exercise. Whoopi said, “You know nobody at this table is going to go anywhere and exercise.”

Sandra Day O’Connor’s husband, who has Alzheimer’s Disease, has been placed in a nursing home. Since he arrived there, he has found a female companion. She is conflicted because she is happy that he is happy, but it is still her husband. Sherri asked if he forgets he loves the second woman, then it will be two dumped women and what will happen to her? Whoopi said that Sandra has to be pleased that he has someone who he cares about. Joy said that it is like if a man leaves you because he is gay, there is nothing you can do about it. Barbara said that she would rather a man left her for another man than a woman.

Sherri wants to know whether Sandra can move on and be with another man. They then explained that you can get married to another man if you are married. She said that she knew that. Barbara also said that she does not think that Sandra is thinking about that now.

North Shore Animal League took possession of 100 dogs that were taken from a puppy mill in Virginia. They then showed the adorable photos of several of the puppies. For information on adopting them, visit the North Shore Animal League website.

Keri Russell appeared on the show to promote her new film August Rush. In the movie she plays a cellist who tries to find the son that she thought died years before. She had to learn cello for four hours a day for the film. She had to do a solo in front of the New York Philharmonic in Central Park with 1000s of people watching.

Keri has a five-month old baby named River. She said that her body type is based on genetics and that is why she is thin already after giving birth. When she her water broke, it was Friday afternoon rush hour, and she and her husband were in a cab trying to get to the hospital. She was in labor for 38 hours. She said that she saw her husband holding their baby, she knew that he was the one. He is a carpenter and is very handy around the house.

Sherri asked how it was to work with Jonathan Rhys-Meyers because he is “so intense and sexy.” Keri said that he was great to work with and that all the ladies and men love him. She also said that he was good at the music parts of the film and can fake his way through anything.

Keri is involved with PKIDS, which encourages parents to talk to their pediatricians about whooping cough. The parents should get shots for it because children commonly get it from their parents or primary care givers. The vaccine wears off, so parents need to get it, even if they got it as children.

Angela, who in the Army, fell in love with her Iraqi translator, MJ, in Baghdad. MJ’s face was blurred because the show is shown in Iraq and he is worried about the fate of his family. She said that it was pretty much love at first sight. She proposed to MJ via text message. The Army did not oppose their marriage. They know of several other translators that married Americans.

Both of their families were opposed to the relationship initially. He joked that his family now loves Angela more than him. MJ’s brother died from a car bombing in 2004. MJ was supposed to be with him, but he had the day off.

The government will not hire him in the United States as a translator because he is not a citizen. He wants to go back to Iraq for work, but Angela does not want him to go back. It took her two years to go through the immigration process to bring MJ to the country. Barbara leaned over and whispered “Was it worth it?” She said, “In every way.”

MJ said that he watched The View previously when he lived in Iraq, but Angela had not heard of it. MJ said that his mom watched Oprah more because it is on at a better time.

Dr. Gadget appeared on the show to talk about hot gadgets for the Thanksgiving. Here are the items that he talked about:

* Rotato Express: peels potatoes or apples very quickly
* Black and Decker Infrawave Oven: 50% faster than a conventional oven (Joy said, “What’s the hurry?”)
* Masterbuilt electric digital turkey fryer: safer than other fryers
* Chef’s Choice’s Trizor knife sharpener
* Lids Off automatic jar opener
* Simple Human sensor soap pump

(I thought it was interesting that this was the first Dr. Gadget segment, at least that I remember, where they prefaced the segment by revealing that Dr. Gadget works for the companies that make some of the products that he will be promoting. I wonder if they got some complaints about his conflict of interest?)

I love Angela & MJ’s story. What a beautiful story! Poor Keri in labor for 38 hours…Yikes!

  2. Stacee Says:

I’m not really sure what Sherri was asking when they were discussing Sandra Day OConnor and her husband. She asked Where does that leave Sandra…can she remarry?. The hosts said explained that while Sandra is married she can’t wed someone else. Sherri said she knew that…so what exactly was she asking?

Keri was adorable. Loved hearing her antectotes. On a side not, I think carpenters are amazing, with wonderful talents.

Like Winnie, I caught note of the ladies pointing out the fact that he works for the companies of the products he was promoting.

  3. Lisa Says:

I think Sherri was just wondering if it would be ok if the wife met someone else too even though she is still technically married to her husband who has Alzheimers. With Alzheimers, the person does really disappear and you have to kind of let them go. It’s hard but it is the reality of this awful disease……otherwise, it just gets harder and harder to watch BW, kind of sad she can’t step away when she really needs to.

  4. Sandy Says:

I got to watch the show today. It was a little slow, but i thought otherwise okay.

I agree with Lisa as to what Sherri was trying to say about Sandra…and the rest of her comment as well.
It is an extremely hard thing, to watch a loved one disappear into the enveloping fog. I think it is so sad for Sandra, but understand why she is happy for her husband. I’m happy for him too. …Off topic, but I worked in a Nursing Home for 6 years, and could write a book about all that I learned from our senior citizens..and all that I saw.. I loved them, all of them.

They did talk about the Supreme court as well, although it was a short conversation.
Another reason why our next election is so important. IMO.
I may have a lot of conservative views, but i do NOT want our supreme court to become so one sided. that would not be good at all for our country. IMO.

I too loved the Angela and MJ story.

I enjoyed Keri as well, and want to see her movie.

  5. rainlillie Says:

Justice O’Connor, Bw and I share the same birthday. I remember when she was first appointed to the Supreme court, I was so proud.
Maria Shiver wrote an excellent book about Alzheimer’s. Her dad Sargent Shriver, has Alzheimer’s disease.

  6. Sandy Says:

    Rainlille,
That would be March 26 right?. I think I remember it, as it is also my very dear niece birthday. I shall try to remember and wish you a happy birthday. Oh ya, somewhere on here I read that Rainlillie is your middle name, from a Native American relative, it is beautiful. I wondered where you got the name from. I believe I commented before the I really liked it. :)
I have always like Sandra Oconnor

  7. rainlillie Says:

    Thanks Sandy!
It’s September 25. I know BW, Michael Douglas, Catherine Zeta Jones and Will Smith were all born on that day. My husband got me one of those “born on this day books” and I always remembered who shared my birthday. When I was in school, it was annouced over the loudspeaker when Jusitice O’Connor was confimred. I thought that was so cool! The first woman to sit on the Supreme Court shared my birthday.

I was glad that the ladies touched on the dogs that were rescued from a puppy mill today. I wish they would have explained more about how horrible these places are though. If you’re thinking about getting a pet, please don’t buy puppies from pet stores, adopt from a shelter or use Petfinder.com instead. Pet stores are supplied by puppy mills, but they will never admit to it because it would mean you’d get your dog somewhere else. This excerpt is from the Humane Society’s Stop Puppy Mill’s website at http://www.stoppuppymills.org/ :

Puppy mills are nothing new. These mass dog-breeding operations have been around for decades. They continue to thrive because they prey on unwitting consumers who are smitten by too-cute-for-words puppies in pet store windows and on fancy websites.

But behind the friendly facade of the local pet shop, the pastoral scenes on a “breeder’s” website, or the neighborhood newspaper ad, there often lies a puppy mill. These canine breeding facilities house dogs in shockingly poor conditions.

Life is particularly bad for “breeding stock,” dogs who live their entire lives in cages and are continually bred for years, without human companionship and with little hope of ever becoming part of a family. These dogs receive little or no veterinary care and never see a bed, a treat or a toy. After their fertility wanes, breeding animals are commonly killed, abandoned or sold to another mill. The annual result of all this breeding is hundreds of thousands of puppies, many with behavior and/or health problems.

Several hundred thousand puppies are shipped cross-country to be sold in pet shops, but many are sold via newspaper classifieds or Internet sites and are often accompanied by false claims such as, “We’d never sell puppies from a puppy mill” or promises that the puppies are “home raised,” farm raised,” or “raised with kids/grandkids.” The ploys of the puppy mill are designed to dupe a well-intentioned family into buying a puppy and keeping the engine of cruelty working overtime.

  9. Sandy Says:

Sorry Rainlillie, I guess I was mistaken.
Well Sept. 25 is a great day too, My older daughter’s is Sept. 29, my grandson Sept. 23.

  10. Sandy Says:

Thanks Julie for talking about and relaying information about “puppy mills”. the more information that gets about this type of practice the better.
We are big per lovers, have 2 dogs that were adopted from a shelter, and 2 cats as well.

  11. Sandy Says:

    sorry…Pet lovers

  12. Tara Says:

Frustrated once again at this panel! When SS asked about what happens to Sandra D.O. now that the hubby has alzheimers, WG — the self-appointed know-it-all — claims something like the “the courts understand these situations and it would be okay”. What? To remarry? I don’t think so, you idiot!!!

Then there is Joy, the other idiot, saying “Well, why doesn’t S.D.O. rejoin the Supreme Court?” Oh yeah, sure, just like that. What a moron!

Joy has said something similarly idiotic, and I’m too tired to google it, so forgive me. But a while back a Dem. senator had a brain aneurysm, or something, and she was annoyed because that screwed up the balance of power in the Senate! WTF? And again today she remarks that basically it was selfish of S.D.O. to leave the court, since she was the swing-vote, and now it is right-leaning. Gosh, I just can’t stand this anymore! Yeah, Joy, the entire world should look out for your interests, instead of their own personal lives!

Why do I even bother watching anymore????

  13. Julie Says:

“We are big pet lovers, have 2 dogs that were adopted from a shelter, and 2 cats as well.”

That’s so sweet, thank you for adopting all your pets. :) If everyone adopted, more and more puppy mills would go out of business because there would be no demand for their animals.

I wish more people knew that if they are looking for a purebred or small breed dog like a chihuahua or pomeranian, they can find them at shelters and http://petfinder.com/ too. In fact, there are entire rescue agencies devoted to these types of dogs.

  14. rainlillie Says:

Julie and Sandy I agree, shelters are the best place to get a pet. We got our dog from a “no kill shelter” about 6 years ago, and we wouldn’t trade her for the world! I also heard that pets that come from the mall type pet shops have a higher chance of having emotional problems.

  15. Julie Says:

Aw, (((hugs))), Rain. I agree, the animals that are adopted seem to be so loving and grateful that they have a safe and happy home at last. No only do pet store puppies have a higher chance of having emotional problems, they are more likely to have health problems too. Puppy mills don’t stop breeding dogs just because they’re sick, and most of them are. From the stoppuppymills.org website:

“Because puppies from puppy mills are more likely to have health problems due to poor care, many consumers are faced with significant veterinary bills or even the death of their puppy soon after purchase.”

  16. rainlillie Says:

    Thanks Julie,
A few years ago we were a foster family to a beautiful chocolate lab. He stayed with us for about a month until we found him a home. He belonged to my sister and she was going to bring him to the shelter. I convinced her that a family setting would be better for him.
We found a nice family to adopt him and now they keep us updated on his progress. I’m glad that there are people like you spreading the word about puppy mills.

  17. Julie Says:

That’s so sweet of you to foster a pet. Thank you for caring too. :)

  18. Peaches Says:

The pace seems so much better than it had been, and the chemistry is more relaxed as well. The tension I saw between Whoop & Joy and then Whoop & Sherri when Whoop took each of them to the woodshed a while back seems to be gone. Still wish Rosie were there (to say the least).

I thought I’d be bored by the diet talk, but the whole discussion left me with a lot of unanswered questions about exactly what the story is with Whoopi (it didn’t all make sense to me), what she DOES eat, and of course how Sherri lost the weight (you can tell, too). I wonder if she has to follow a specific diet for diabetics or if she is just watching it. Too bad Whoopi now feels she has to tackle weight loss as well as cigs. Not fun.

I thought the discussion about Sandra and where things were left with her, in terms of having a man in her life, was muddled and it seemed as if no one was really getting was the other one was saying.

  19. Peaches Says:

That’s a pretty big deal that Sherri “booked the gig” for that movie by the Monster’s Ball director, isn’t it? That’s great for her, and I look forward to seeing her in a drama. She was so good in “Raymond” and that sit-com with Andy Dick. I didn’t hear her say why she was wearing the cornrows now, meaning that day. (Sorry that this is posted on the wrong place.)

  20. Peaches Says:

    Sandy:
I meant to respond to this earlier but dang, I get lost among the comments and threads and forget where I saw what. You said this:

“Off topic, but I worked in a Nursing Home for 6 years, and could write a book about all that I learned from our senior citizens..and all that I saw.. I loved them, all of them.”

I was very happy (and touched) to hear you say this. I am always relieved to hear about any nursing homes that are good (if I can assume that?). I too think “old” people are usually very interesting and have so much to offer. I It would be good to know what you learned from them.

  21. Sandy Says:

    Peaches,
I really should describe my years at the Nursing Home, as a Love/ Hate job. I could talk for hours and hours about it.
It was a large nursing home, and there was 50 residents in each of 5 sections. So I knew 50 residents VERY well. As I said I grew to love them all, and “every one” of them taught me something, about all kinds of things.
At the same time it was an “extremely” stressful job. Mainly because I came to know the residents so well, and cared about them all.
Also it was a “great” nursing center the first 3 or so years I worked there, ..privately, family owned.
It was then bought by a corporation, and things went down hill…for the residents mainly. It was so frustrating at times, and hard to deal with. And so I quit, didn’t I want to, I didn’t want to leave the residents. But had to for my own ..?..well being I guess.

One big thing I learned from the seniors was to never wait to do something you really want to do. Because you never know what the future holds. You never know when a major illness or disease will strike, leaving you in a nursing home, some times loosing all you have because of medical expenses.
If there is something you always wanted to do, and you can afford to do it now, then do it now while you can.!!

  22. rainlillie Says:

For 40 years my mother worked as a CNA. Due to some medical problems she had to retire in August. She worked in nursing homes as well as private in home care. I admire and respect anyone that is capable of doing that type of work. The pay isn’t the best, the hours are long and sometimes the workers aren’t treated very kind by the patients family members or management.
It takes a special kind of person to be able to provide such care for total strangers.

  23. New Linda Says:

“If there is something you always wanted to do, and you can afford to do it now, then do it now while you can.!!”

I’ll piggyback on that thought. If you can’t afford to do it, find a way. If finding the way is too difficult for whatever reason, choose something else on your list. We should all have a growing list of dreams, possibilities, and sure things.

  24. Sandy Says:

    Rainville,
Bless your Mom, 40 years is a LOT of time to deal with all the stress and demand of being an CNA. I can tell that she really loved doing it,..and for that I am so happy for her many patients.

  25. Sandy Says:

    New Linda,
    Absolutely great advise!!!

  26. rainlillie Says:

    Sandy,
Thanks a bunch! Your kind words mean a lot.

  27. Peaches Says:

    Sandy & Rainlillie:
Thanks so much for your posts. I’m so impressed with anyone who works in this field. Can’t be easy, to say the very least. Especially the emotional attachments, and almost like having a second family, with all that that brings, good and not always so good. 40 years is a long, long time. The idea Linda said, too, about trying to live one of your dreams while you can is so true, and I think it’s easy to sometimes forget that the little dreams can be gone after, and not just the big ones that money is needed for. I have a family friend who made huge sacrifices & everyone thought she’d get to do some things for herself “when she got older.” The problem is, she is now ill and can’t. It really looks like there’s not much else for her to do. Sad. I like Linda’s idea of a list….

I’m getting behind in watching View episodes I’ve taped.
    Thanks again for sharing.

  28. rainlillie Says:

    Peaches,
My mother still keeps in touch with some of her patients. As of now she’s trying to find things to keep herself busy. She had the same routine for 40 years and the adjustment has been a little difficult. I would love for the View to do a show about life after retiring. There are so may retirees who have so much to offer our society.
