The View November 17th Recap: Day of Hot Topics and David Frost

by Winnie McCarthy

Today on The View, Barbara Walters was present, but Sherri Shepherd was absent. She spent the weekend in Florida for “Super Soap” weekend. Whoopi Goldberg made that announcement using another weird accent.

Barack Obama had his first post-election interview last night on 60 Minutes. They played clips of the interview where he talked about his mother-in-law possibly moving into the White House. Barbara said that watching the interview was reassuring because Obama had so much knowledge about all the topics covered in the interview, like the auto industry and the economy. Barbara talked about other first families that had in-laws in the White House.

Barbara sent a picture of Cha-Cha to the Obama family as a suggestion of breed of dog, because she is hypo-allergenic. Whoopi talked about her cat again being angry about the Obamas getting a dog and not a cat.

Barbara brought up her book and Elisabeth suggested it would make a great Christmas present. Joy told her to relax, that she has the job. Barbara said that in her book she talks about how when she dated Alan Greenspan, the dog she had at the time bit him.

The next topic is where the Obama girls will go to school. Joy said that they should get educated in the White House, just like George Bush.. Elisabeth said, “It goes on and on with this one.” Joy said that the pickings are slim right now and she has to get the jokes in while she still can. Barbara said that they have to consider not only their education, but their safety. Elisabeth said it is a tough call, but it might be good for the public school system for them to attend.

Joy said that they should have other children come into the White House and be taught there. Elisabeth said that she supports home schooling. Joy said, “A lot of them are demented when they are home schooled” and said that they learn to be afraid of other children. Elisabeth said that is a stereotype and not true and many children that are home schooled are still involved in activities and sports. Whoopi said that it may be difficult on the Obama girls’ classmates. Barbara said that might last two weeks, but then it will be okay. Whoopi said that people might not be comfortable with having someone who is a target in their class and having the secret service around. Elisabeth pointed out that moving in the middle of a school year is also a difficult thing for kids.

When they returned from the commercial, they talked about how Barack Obama has to give up his Blackberry because he is not allowed to have personal e-mails or texts. Joy said that she would “go bananas” without her Blackberry and Obama needs it to keep in touch with his family. She said that you get a lot of work done with the Blackberry. Barbara said that when she went to Bush’s ranch when he was first elected, he said he was not allowed to send e-mail. Elisabeth said that if McCain had been elected he would not have this problem, because he did not have a Blackberry. Whoopi does not have a Blackberry and you can only get in touch with her by getting her at home. She doesn’t like when people are so attached to their phone that they have to answer it right away. Barbara doesn’t like when people text at dinner. Joy said that her Blackberry does everything but take out the garbage and is like a husband.

Hillary Clinton may be named Secretary of State. Barbara said that they would not let this story get this far and then say that they were not interested. Barbara said that the pros are that Hillary is knowledgeable of foreign affairs and has traveled the world. Barbara said that the con is that the State Department needs organization and that is not her strong suit, evidenced by her campaign. They are now looking at Bill Clinton’s philanthropic work to see if there are any conflicts of interest. Barbara said that she believes that Clinton is smart capable, and well- informed. Elisabeth said that it would erase Hillary Clinton from the equation to run against Obama in 2012. Joy said that they don’t want Bill Clinton around, but Barbara said that he has his own work and probably won’t be hanging around. Whoopi thinks that Bill Richardson would be a better Secretary of State and thinks Hillary Clinton should be Secretary of Health. Joy said that Richardson turned on the Clintons to back Obama and if Obama names Clinton over Richardson, then he would be turning his back on him.

This past weekend, Elisabeth wanted to go to the store Home Goods because it relaxes her. Tim volunteered to go with her, but she should have known it would go wrong when they go to the store and he said that they would only be there 20 minutes. She saw Thanksgiving napkins that she had to have for $6.99. The line had 30 people in it, though, and Tim balked and said to leave the cart. She agreed and cannot stop thinking about the napkins. She wants to rewrite her vows to include “short lines and long lines.”

Elisabeth said that Grace was equally disappointed to leave behind the glittering reindeer that she wanted. Joy said that it could teach her child to be a shoplifter. Barbara said that Tim should go back to the store to get the napkins in order to save their marriage. Elisabeth said that they are probably gone and offered to buy them for double from whoever bought them. Joy said that it is primitive, in that men are hunters and women are gatherers. She said that you have to give the man a hunting objective to keep him busy and then the women can gather. Elisabeth said, “I don’t agree with much of what you say, but that is genius!”

The next topic was the wildfires in California. Whoopi said that people to start gathering clothing and food to send to victims.

The auto industry is pleading for a bailout. Whoopi said that you have to bail them out because this is one of the last industries we have in America and they affect a lot of jobs. Barbara said that the lack of proper management and imagination has caused the problems. She said that if you have a bailout, you need to change the management. Whoopi said that there have to be stipulations in the bailout, but we can’t not do it. Elisabeth wants to know where to draw the line, adding it is a complex issue and part of the issue has to do with unions. Joy said that we also rely on the industry for military weaponry. Elisabeth asked what is the incentive then to not behave in a risky manner if your company will get bailed out. Joy said that they need to work on electric cars and similar things. Elisabeth said they should not charge her double for a hybrid car. Barbara said that people are also not wanting to buy cars, worrying that they will drop in value if the company goes under.

Sir David Frost appeared on the show. He is most famous for the interview that he did with Richard Nixon following his resignation. It was turned into a play and will be released as a movie. You can also get the actual interviews on DVD starting December 2nd. Frost said that in the play and movie he was portrayed as a playboy, and there are other bits of fiction that he can do without. Overall he is happy with the production and the underdog story that it presents.

Barbara said that she did an interview with Nixon three years after his for free, whereas Frost paid $600,000. Frost said that the money affected Nixon because he was worried he may be sued at the time, but there were other reasons. Frost told Nixon that he should apologize for what he did or it would haunt him.

Frost does an show for the English Al-Jazeera channel, which has brought him some criticism. He said that although he does not understand what is said on Al-Jazeera in Arabic, what is said on the English channel is positive for Israel and he did a special on the anniversary of Israel. The channel is independent.

Frost wants to meet Barack Obama. He would ask him what five things will be drastically different in a year’s time.

At the end of the show, Elisabeth was holding Taylor, who she called “My little buddy Taylor.”

“Joy told her to relax, that she has the job.”

Just one more reason to love Joy.

  2. lynn c Says:

Does it annoy anyone else when BW stops conversation to inform the audience what a word or phrase, etc., means? Today, she stopped EH’s boring story to tell us what “Homegoods” referred to- this really irks me. (A.) It is rude to the speaker; (2.) It is rude to the audience. If I don’t automatically know what the heck these women are talking about, I can Google it. BW treats us as if we were dimwits.

  3. wendee Says:

I wish Whoopi’s cat would tell Barbara to shut up about her book.

  4. berndoubt Says:

“BW treats us as if we were dimwits.”

Guilty as charged, since I’m still watching this craptacular show!

  5. lynn c Says:

#4 I am beginning to wonder about myself! Why do I watch this mess every day?

And do you believe BW sent P-Elect Obama a photo of her DOG? Whoopi’s cat jokes not funny. No wonder the O’s declined appearing on the show pre-election….these women are getting goofier by the day.

And you know BW’s just hoping for the big “get” for the dog reveal when she pulls such stupidity…….

  6. susieq Says:

Note to Barbara: If people haven’t bought your book yet, they ain’t gonna.

Note to Elisabeth: Why didn’t you tell your husband to wait in the car or take the kids to get some ice cream or something while you checked out?

Note to Whoopie: Puhleeeze stop with the accents.

Note to Joy: I thought you looked really nice today. I like your hair up.

  7. mibi Says:

    lol at #6

I was wondering th same thing why if she (Eh) wanted the napkins why she did not tell tim to go sit in the car or tell run another errand since she said the kids were fine with shoping.

The 60 min interview was good.

I want john kerry to get a postion in obama’s administation. joy was right about what people will say as far as richardson hillary tiff.

If we bailout the auto industry will the rigth blame obama for it? and moreover how socilaist does that make us? (j/k)

    taylor is a cutie

  8. NOTIMPRESSED Says:

I love it when Babs keep pushing her book every chance she gets. Instead “Auditions”
she should have called it “Propositions” or
    maybe “Positions”.

Whoopi needs to quit the CAT crap.

I can’t believe Lizzie surrendered to her hubby. She is always so strong minded/willed in the show….guess she doesn’t talk-back-to-him, like she does her
    coherts. Funny!!

Loved Joy’s comment about BOOKS in the WH, or
    lack of.

  9. berndoubt Says:

The shopping story seemed fake. And calling her daughter’s glittery reindeer “crap” on national television seems harsh (and that’s coming from ME).

Whoopi maybe your cat and Cha-Cha could have a cage match and the winner gets to retire and never be mentioned again! Thanks.

  10. susieq Says:

Barbara has often said Cha Cha is supposed to replace the grandchildren she doesn’t have…If her daughter were to ever have a child I’m sure Barbara would put Kathie Lee to shame with endlessly talking about them.

What was the point of Elisabeth’s shopping story? That she lets her husband dictate their schedule? That she needs napkins for Thanksgiving? That she needs to learn how to tell entertaining anecdotes?

Elisabeth, I think, is wrong about Obama offering Hillary Secretary of State to avoid her challenging him in 2012. After all she did to help him get elected why would she try to unseat him?

  11. red Says:

oh for heaven’s sake, just reading the recap makes me dizzy… it just makes me want to pull my hair out.

  12. Vegas Says:

Well THAT was a surprise how at the very end they all posed with Taylor in Elis’ lap. I thought he looked cute, and didn’t look so much like Grace like he did in that pic she showed from his birthday party. He was even dressed cute. I just think Elisabeth is better suited to be a mom to a boy, she is not the same at all with her daughter.

As for her Home Goods story today, what I want to know is why does Elisabeth speak so frantically when she tells stories about her personal life? Frankly, that wasn’t even a ’story’. She dramatized it so much. And she should have just told her husband to go wait outside or take the kids for a walk while she checks out if he didn’t want to wait. You don’t spend that much time shopping and then leaving your filled cart just because the line is too long. Now, I have left lines at stores with lines that are too long if I was only there for a few things and it wasn’t that important. What I usually do will be flat out say to the cashier ‘isn’t there someone else that can open up and help you with these lines? And most often right after saying something, someone will come and open another register.

The way Elisabeth speaks while telling her personal ’stories’ is ridiculous. She sounds like she is about to pass out from an overdose of adrenaline.

  13. berndoubt Says:

Also irritating about the story, I’d be pissed if I worked at the store and had to re-shelve everything or if I was shopping there and had to make my way around her damn cart filled with glittery crap and napkins!

  14. Vegas Says:

    #8 NOTIMPRESSED..
I am not surprised she surrendered to her husband! What proper Republican wife wouldn’t?
Only liberal woman sass talk to their husbands. :D

  15. Vegas Says:

Sounds like Elisabeth is finally being realistic when she speaks about her husbands football career. Today she referred to him as a ‘former Quarterback’. ‘Bout time she comes to terms with her husbands pathetic football career.

  16. Rachel Anna Says:

Ok. Not that this show has ever been “intellectual,” but the IQ meter was really really abysmal today. I wish Whoopi would stop with the accents, I wish BW would stop pumping her book (and Elisabeth would stop kissing ass by saying it would make a great gift), I wish Joy would recharge her battery like the old days, and I wish EH would just shut the crap up in general. Please don’t tell us personal stories unless it’s A - funny (she’s not) or emotional (she’s not capable). After watching this show since high school, I’m about on my way out.

Today’s show was for 3rd graders. And I’m sure even a few 8 year-olds would’ve thought these women were idiots. Sad.

  17. Catherine Says:

I was fortunate to be able to watch a portion of the View today. I live out in Southern California where the fires have been a major issue. We are still hoping that the fires do not take another jump towards us.

I really enjoy the different personalities on this show and feel they work well together for the most part.

#15 Vegas - Just because you don’t like EH does that mean that you have to put her husband down too??

  18. Rachel Anna Says:

I feel like I don’t admire or identify with these women anymore. Lisa Ling was a hard-working young intellectual with a quirky sense of humor. Joy didn’t used to be so damp; she was a brazen queen of comedy. Meredith was a kind-hearted mother-type who also could unleash a wry sense of humor - and she didn’t judge others. While Star was never my cup of tea, I admire that she was a lawyer. Clearly, BW has put about eighteen million of her own cracks in the glass ceiling — BUT

Now BW spends most of her time plugging her other endeavors, Joy’s spirit has been beaten down, and EH - what the heck does she bring to the show? The idea that she was even allowed to ask Frost any questions gave me the creeps. The vast diffrence in their IQs was immediately apparent. I was embarrassed for women that such an accomplished man had to sit next to her.

  19. canmama Says:

Ugh! How rude to just fill up your shopping cart and then not buy anything becuase the line is too long. Hey EH - someone has to re-stock that! It’s just rude! That woman is so selfish. And why can’t you stand up to your husband….hmmmm, maybe there is trouble in paradise??

  20. Sandy Says:

    Thanks Winnie,

I thought today’s show was okay. Certainly not the best, but not the worst either.

I will say this about Whoopi’s cat, it is pretty cat.
I think the Obama family should have a dog & a cat.

I think Hilary would be great for Secretary of State.

The thing that I liked best about Elisabeth’s story, was the end. When Joy told her she should have sent him off on a hunting trip, to find maybe a moose hunting cap or something. At which point Barb made a joke about Joy talking about moose hunting. It doesn’t sound funny writing it, but i thought it was while watching.

I agree with Whoopi. I think we have to give the Auto industry a bailout, (with some requirements) even though I don’t like it.

I enjoyed seeing David Frost again.

    Taylor is a rel cutie.

  21. Sandy Says:

    14.
    Cute

Only liberal woman sass talk to their husbands. :)

I wouldn’t bet on that if I were you. :)

  22. Vegas Says:

    #17 Catherine..
Not putting Tim down, just stating a FACT. His football career was pathetic. I am not a fan of the sport, but ask any one who is, and they will tell you Tim Hasselbeck is a joke, it’s his brother Matt that is good.
How many years has Elisabeth been touting him as if he is some kind of big time QB even when in fact he was a back up to the backup QB? That is just embarrasing.

  23. Sandy Says:

    # 17 catherine,
May you, family, and home, be safe.

  25. Rachel Anna Says:

Very cute. Although I’m more sad than mad about the state of the show.

  26. Teresa Says:

Personally when I go shopping with my husband he does his own thing while I do my own. And if he has a problem with waiting in line he goes out to the truck. No big deal. No big discussion. We are both adults and do not need to be attached at the hip.

  27. Sandy Says:

    # 23 Kelly,
    VERY good. :)
    I need to take lessons.
Today though I have lots to do.
    I’m off, to get busy.

  28. ShannonP Says:

I’m with those that think the put downs of Tim are not cool, that he is a “joke” or had a pathetic career or that his brother is the “real” talent etc.
I’ve never seen an interview with him, so I don’t know what his personality is or what kind of person he is. But I don’t think a dislike of Elisabeth has to carry over to that extreme of pettiness.
I could see baggin on him like that if he is a known jerk or something and maybe he is and that is why people have such a nasty attitude about him?

  29. Roger from Ohio Says:

boy I just read everyones posts…… lots to comment on today….. Im gonna leave out the number but will address the issues…

First the book….. I love when they “promote” Audition…. I see it as a running gag… something fun.

Whoopi’s cat and accents…… it does drive me nuts…… I had a GF that did that… but we put up a lot for our GFs. Saying that…. it is all done in fun…. and The View is a fun show….

The shopping story had a different ending then what I thought it would….. It was a shame that Tim and Elisabeth didnt allow her children things that she was allowed to put in the cart. She never gets to tell stories…. today she got a chance…. we all tell stories more “dramatic” than real life.

oh… and I didnt know what the store HomeGoods was… so I guess I should thank BW ;)

Yes….the 60 min interview was good…. GO PRESIDENT OBAMA!!

About Hillary being the Sec of State….. that would be a great idea…. she is the first First Lady that is qualified for a Cabinet position… She would have been on Bill’s Cabinet if it werent for the no nepotism rule. For those people that think that Hillary will somehow hurt Obama’s presidency, or that Hillary will over shadow Obama, then you need to understand how powerful President Obama will be.

Bailing out the Auto industry…. one thing that isnt being talked about…. if the Auto Companies file bankruptcy, the pensions for retired workers will also be part of that bankruptcy. So, not only will we lose jobs… but they will lose pensions as well.

I dont know much about Tim, but Elisabeth doesnt “brag” about his Football career so he shouldnt be mocked…. he was paid to play football….. not many out there has… he wasnt the best that is true….. but he was good enough to be paid.

Now the issues have been addressed.

oh… check out my post on the off topic thread….. Id like to hear about your opinions. thanks

  30. Roger from Ohio Says:

geez… sorry….. didnt realize that it was so long….. I wonder if I talk as much as I type…. probably…. hahahhaha

  31. NanC Says:

    #25 says:
We are both adults and do not need to be attached at the hip.

    Love it!!!

  32. Rachel Anna Says:

I am also on the “let’s not diss” Tim train. To tell you the truth, I watch a lot of sports and he seems like a nice guy. I feel badly for him actually. Like so many people that marry too young, he made a mistake…

  33. joey Says:

    Hi all

    Happy Monday to All

I found it odd that instead of giving
Sir David Frost more than a 10 minute segment, they they chose instead to devote the majority of the show to cats, dogs and Thanksgiving napkins.

I thought of a ton of questions for him regarding his amazing career; his views on the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, the outcome of the American election, the state of the world’s economy….etc. etc. etc. Instead we were asked to listen to what came across as bland, inane pap.

Come on producer types, your audience is are better than this.

  34. Em Says:

First time poster. This was just too good!

Watch the part of the interview with Sir David Frost:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WsczE48JKoQ

At around 1:39, right when Barbara is practically kissing Frost’s a**, Whoopie kicks Joy. It seems to be in an almost “Here she goes again” type of way. Just my “view” and thought i would share!

  35. heather speaks Says:

    elizabeth has trouble multitasking.
she should get a life coach. one of those people who come in and organize your life.

  36. red Says:

yeah, i also think that Tim Hasselbeck doesn’t deserve to get bashed. I don’t think Elisabeth brags about him being a quarterback. She barely mentions him or the kids. And i kind of feel bad for her when a guest on the show will confuse Tim for Matt Hasselbeck. I mean what is Elisabeth supposed to say? It’s kind of awkward to say: No, the awesome star quarterback isn’t my husband, it’s my brother in law…

  37. wendee Says:

I just think on what the hell Wednesdays, they should bring up the ridiculous “hot topics’ from today, from the unhappy cat, to BW’s book and dog, to Elisabeth’s napkin story. I mean, what the hell?

  38. May Says:

When Joy said to EH today that she shouldn’t worry, she has or she GOT the job..does that mean that EH has her contract renewed for the next 5 years? That is the impression that I got. Joy got in some good zingers today, the first was telling EH to stop brown nosing(in her own way) and the other was about the kids learning at the White House like bushie did!
Way to go Joy. I know some of the stuff she says is written for her but these seem to be off the cuff.
I agree, Whoopi enough with the cat talk. Bawa, enough with the book talk.

  39. Diane Says:

Okay Watch. The View friends :

Rachel Anna #16 - your blogs are always right on.

The fact that Elizabeth H gets to even sit next to David Frost, Barack Obama, even John MCain on these panels….gives me the creeps.

SHE HAS NOT EARNED THIS PRIVILIDGE.

  40. Joyce W. Davis Says:

I’m feeling a real let-down of post election blah’s! I’m so GLAD that Obama won, but I guess I miss the ’stress’ of watching all the shows discussing the election. A regular show seems bland now. I also miss Meredith on the show. She had a very quick mind with something a little off color thrown in every once in a while. Elizabeth is the typical ‘low information’ person. I heard someone call many of the McCain voters by that phrase and I think it applies to EH on all topics. BW seems to ‘mother’ her and is maybe afraid to hurt her feelings. I wish that Lucy Ling was back too!

  41. Rachel Anna Says:

If Hasselbeck gets her contract renewed after her abominable behavior, I’m never watching this show again. It’s the only way I can think of to protest the bleached moron and the bleached moronic fever she has plagued upon this show.

To the producers of The View - you were once good. You once made sense. You once had a brain. You once had a fantastic group of women. You’re letting it pour - at an alarming rate - down the tubes.

  42. mom2ck Says:

I really don’t think Tim should get trashed. thousands of young men play high school and college sports. It is a tiny percentage who even make it to the pro. Also just because a quarterback doesn’t play doesn’t mean he doesn’t contribute.

  43. Lajet Says:

I think homeschooling the Obama girls would be terrific - if that’s what they want to do. Joy has a bunch of uninformed stereotypes about homeschool kids. I’m surprised. She is so open on issues of civil rights, but so closed on the issue of homeschooling. Sure, some are nutso. So are some kids at public schools. and private schools. There are also lots of terrific home schooled kids. Plus, there is a difference between homeschooling forever, and homeschooling for a few years.

RECAP:Elisabeth pointed out that moving in the middle of a school year is also a difficult thing for kids.
RESPONSE: Actually, if I moved my kids it would be in the middle of a school year. Waiting until summer means that the kids have few playmates over the summer. Waiting until August means a lot has to get done at the end of summer. Now, there are may circumstances in which I wouldn’t move int eh middle of the year - but as a blanket statement I think it’s bad advice.

  44. NanW. Says:

#34 Em, I saw that, too. Too funny! And did you notice how Joy was laughing right after that?

  45. Barbara Says:

#34.em..Thanks for showing that. I missed it before. Sre looks like WG and JB have something going on behind the scenes. LOL!
Since the election hasanyone else noticed a lull in the show? Lot of dead time.

  46. Debbie Says:

Roger, I’ve only posted on here a couple of times. Enjoy what people have to say about the View and I agree with what people say about EH she needs to go. But wanted to clear up something. My father retired from GM 20 years ago. He will not lose all of his pension he will still get 60% of it. But he will lose his insurance which then he will have to depend on medicare. He and my mother are on medications that are expensive and they are worried if they do file bankruptcy are they going to have to choose between eating and taking there meds. My father said to me who is going to hire a 73 year old if he has to find a job to pay for his medical care. When my father retired they told him that his benefits would be there for the rest of his life thats why he worked there for 30 years. Our government needs to bail them out this time but only if the auto industry will make changes. The CEOs knew this was going to happen they were warned but SUVs were selling and making them money so they didn’t listen. What it boils down to is poor management and corporate greed. And not the workers and retiries are paying the price.

  47. Kelly Says:

#46 Furious! - CEOs have become synonymous with attorneys. And now that more and more primary care physicians aren’t accepting Medicare, those seniors trying to live off only 60% of their pension are up CEO creek without a golden parachute!

    Makes me sick –

I worked for a crooked CEO (who had the world’s nastiest, lying, crooked attorney) for 15 years.

I am happy to report I helped to get him publicly fired!

And glad for it – it was worth the price I paid.

More people need to speak out against corruption! GREED - America’s deadly sin.

  48. berndoubt Says:

Someone made a good point on TWoP. According to an expert (well, o.k., I don’t know who the expert is, but I understand the premise and it seems right), the auto industry isn’t going under because the retirees’ benefits are any larger than those of foreign workers. It’s just that because the U.S. auto industry is 100 years old and has been providing benefits longer and to more people. When foreign auto makers are in business 100 years, they’ll have the same costs. If we as a country could get health care costs under control and stop paying so much money to insurance companies who are in essence trying not to pay claims, we might not have these problems.

  49. Roger from Ohio Says:

    #46 Debbie–

I found this statement when I googled “if gm goes bankrupt what happens to pensions”

—In other words, bankruptcy could actually help the Big 3, in terms of their core car businesses. However, the real conundrum is what to do about GM’s pension plans, as well as those at Ford and Chrysler. Kedrosky says a shortfall on those pensions would mean the end for the already cash-strapped Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp. And that’s where another bailout is likely.

Maybe they said u would get 60% of the pension, but I dont believe that it is guaranteed.

  50. Roger from Ohio Says:

    #47 Kelly–

    GREED - America’s deadly sin.

I thought that was gay marriage and abortion…

    /snark

  51. berndoubt Says:
