The View November 1st Recap: Ethan Hawke and Sabrina Bryan
Carrie Ann Inaba from Dancing with the Stars sat in as guest host of The View today. Joy Behar was ticked off today. At the last Democratic presidential debate, all of the candidates ganged up on Hillary Clinton. Joy said it is because she is winning. She said that they should attack the Republicans and not their own kind.
Joy is also annoyed by Heather Mills who is complaining about the British media and how they are responsible for her problems. Whoopi said that the paparazzi is bad all over the world. She said that Mills should have laid low and not gone on with Dancing with the Stars if she did not want publicity. Sherri said it was okay for her to do that because she wanted to repair to her image.
Carrie Ann said that if she was really worried about her daughter’s safety, she should have gone into hiding. Whoopi said that once you open the door to publicity, you cannot close it again. Joy said that she is a gold digger and she is talking out of both sides of her mouth, saying she wants to protect Paul on one hand, but also revealing that he has secrets.
The last time that Carrie Ann was on The View, she also talked about Heather Mills and how Heather blamed her for getting kicked off the show.
After the break, Whoopi pronounced Carrie Ann Inaba’s name as “Tanaba” and Carrie Ann called her out on it. Whoopi acted like she hadn’t said it wrong.
Carrie Ann’s mom was in the audience and Whoopi asked her if she minded that her daughter was with a younger man. She is 39 and her boyfriend Artem Chigvintsev is only 25. She does not want to pressure him into having kids, but she is getting older. He told her that she is working a lot of now and he would have to watch the kids, but he is trying to get started in his career. He is a dancer, who appeared on So You Think You Dance.
Carrie Ann said that he is Russian so he is very grounded and old-fashioned. Joy said, “From Russia? Did you get a mail order husband?” Joy said that when she is 70, he will be 55 and going after 25 year old women. Whoopi said that he was not ready to have kids at his age and it is her issue about getting to old.
They next showed a segment where Sherri went out on a tour of New York City. She went to a tourist kiosk and it was staffed by Mayor Bloomberg. She also sent to the restaurant where they filmed the “orgasm” scene in When Harry Met Sally and Sherri reenacted it by reacting to how good the food was. She also “ran into” Vincent Pastore, former Sopranos actor. He took her via helicopter to see the Statute of Liberty.
Ethan Hawke appeared on the show to promote the new films Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead. He is also directing a play in NYC called “The Things We Want.” He was very nervous directing a play because, unlike directing a film, he doesn’t have control. He has also written novels.
He said that “right now” he does not like directing more than acting. He chooses his project based on how good the story is in and whether they are conversation pieces. At first he thought that this movie would not make money, but it has gotten great reviews and some Oscar buzz.
Sabrina Bryan and Mark Ballas, who were shockingly eliminated from Dancing with the Stars this week appeared on the show. They performed the cha-cha. Sherri called it a “travesty” that Sabrina left the show. Sabrina was in tears after the dance and said that she cannot believe the competition is over for her. She said that they had so much fun with all the routines this season. She is part of a group called the Cheetah Girls.
Mark said that the whole experience was amazing and they have been come really close friends. Sherri said, “How close?” because there have been rumors of a romance. They did not admit to anything more than a friendship.

I agree with Joy that the dems are “protesting too much” about one of their own…instead of going after the real villian: bush,jr. All the gop group has to do is sit back and watch the dems try and distroy Hilliary..they don’t have to do a thing! The show was uninteresting to me today…didn’t watch the last 20 mins.

IMHO, Today’s show went really well! It made me smile. I really loved the pace. It was a rather charming episode and very heartfelt by me. The producers need to keep the show more charming and establish respectful and entertaining debates on the panel not incessant and overly abrasive cackle. Personally the latter can be rather disturbing to me. The co-hosts don’t even have to lose their ground while maintaining respectful dialogue. I’m personally not entertained by controversy!
When EH returns she could tone down some of the abrasiveness and listen more. Whoopi doesn’t have to overcharge opinion either. Age blows should be avoided. Everyone should just calm down during tense topics. The co-hosts are all capable of concurring and dissenting respectfully.
I really enjoyed the discussion on Heather Mills. I particularly like the way Sherri’s has demonstrated dissenting opinions with Joy and Whoopi on the panel and she stood some ground too (respectfully of course). I liked this. I’m also appreciating her attempts in saying more meaningful things for viewers’ sake. This should always be the goal! One thing I admire the way she lets the other co-hosts say there bit and doesn’t talk over them. I give Sherri kudos in the etiquette department! Her segment in her new hometown of New York was wonderful. I think the comedic/acting segments really work for her! I’ve enjoyed it.
I also love the guest co-host Carrie Ann Inaba. The woman always has brilliant and clever constructive criticism to say on Dancing With The Stars. I’m so glad they invited her back as a guest co-host on “The View.” I would really like to see her again before EH comes back.
IMHO, I just loved the flow of today’s show. It was very beautiful to see.

I didn’t watch today, so thanks for the recap. No one knows what went on in Heather’s marriage. She could be wrong , he could be wrong…They both could be wrong.
Just because people may enjoys Paul’s music, doesn’t mean that he’s isn’t capable of being a big a-hole. There’s three sides to every story, his side, her side and the truth.
I think it’s fair for the candidates to point out differences among them and their opponents, but I also think they must be careful in doing so.
Hilliary shouldn’t be treated differently because she’s a woman, but I also think when they go after her, they must remember that the public will respond negatively if they do it in a harsh way.

“Carrie Ann said that if she was really worried about her daughter’s safety, she should have gone into hiding. ”
What an idiotic thing to say! Why should Heather go into hiding?

Thanks Winnie, I always appreciate your recaps. I didn’t get to see today’s show.
Sounds like it was a good show.
Thanks Ken, it is some times nice to read positive things about the host. Although i realize that everyone doesn’t always share the same view. I believe that this blog gives everyone a chance to express their likes and dislikes and to some times vent. That’s great too.
I think that Whoopi is right, once you are in, or put yourself in the public limelight, you have to expect that there will be publicity, and the dreaded paparazzi. Although I certainly can understand why it is so irritating and frustrating. Most especially when they focus on anything negative and take things out of context.
I feel as Rainlille said, no one knows what went on in their marriage, and there is I’m sure as she suggest 3 sides to the story.
The last Democratic debate i myself thought was terrible. I have to agree that i thought it wasn’t a very wise thing to do, for them all to gang up on Hilary. It just gave the Republicans something to sit back and laugh about. Sorry,..but that’s how I see it.

Keep Carrie Ann FOREVER…she was a delight. What a stunning presence. She brought life and light, and she was very enjoyable. I was pleased the producers finally began to incorporate my hometown NYC into the mix with Sherri. They rarely mention that they are in one of the most dynamic places on the planet, and they had some great outside shots. They need to ditch the third hot topics segment, and just hand it over Sherri to do on the street segments…it was wonderful. The politics conversation was great, no controversy. The interview with Ethan Hawke was very cool too. Kudos at last!
November 1st, 2007 at 1:28 pm
I understand, a lot of people viewed it as “ganging” up on her, but I thought Edwards made some valid points. She is supposedly the
frontrunner so it’s logical that they will try to engage her more in a one on one debate.
I’m sure we’ll see the same thing with Rudy and the republicans. In a way it’s good, because Hilliary can show that she is tough enough for the job.
I don’t want them to handle her with kid gloves, because she’s a woman. The GOP is going to swiftboat whoever the nominee is, so these tough debates will just make the candidates stronger.
November 1st, 2007 at 1:29 pm
I liked Joy today, she almost seemed like her “old self”. It would be nice if she would speak that passionately about some things that have been going on (fake FEMA press conference, sanctions and possible war with Iran) however, I don’t think that it is her doing to not be speaking about that.
Also, I agreed with Joy about Heather Mills. I too think she is a golddigger and for someone who wants to avoid the press and papparazzi she sure gets herself out there enough. She could have divorced Paul without the publicity and controversy but chose to take him to court for half. Then she alludes to secrets that she has that could destroy someone’s reputation. Please. I don’t doubt she loves her daughter but she clearly hasn’t been putting her first. There’s no reason for her to be a celebrity. She’s an activist. She married a celebrity. The tv show she went on (voluntarily signed on for) is called Dancing with the Stars - not Dancing with the EX-Wives of Stars.
Sorry to vent so much about her but I can’t stand her and I think she’s more than a little bonkers. IMO.

How do we know she wasn’t mistreated in her marriage. I’m not saying that’s the case, but because Paul was more well known people seem to look at him as being the victim here. She should try to go on with her life and not hide away in her home. The press is going to follow her regardless.
November 1st, 2007 at 2:20 pm
I’m not saying Paul is a victim and of course we don’t know how the marriage was for her but she isn’t giving me the impression that she’s trying to go on with her life. Just stating my view about a topic discussed on The View on a website called Watching the View. That’s all.
November 1st, 2007 at 2:28 pm
I’m curious as to why she has been labeled a “gold digger?” I haven’t followed the story, so I don’t know all the details.
Paul is pretty much royalty in England, so of course she is going to be treated as the villain.
I think she came to America thinking the people here would be a little less judgmental. Of course she was wrong about that.

In reading your comment, and thinking about it in your terms. I do have to agree that “these tough debates will just make the candidates stronger”. that rings true to me.
November 1st, 2007 at 2:58 pm
Thanks for a great post, Ken. I thoroughly enjoyed today’s show, especially with the absence of BW and EH.
Carrie Ann Inaba was a lively and energetic guest host, although I could have done without the insight into her may-december romance and another discussion about freezing embryos.
It was good to hear Joy bring up two REAL hot topics— their hot topics have been so lame and lukewarm lately, behind at least by a couple of weeks.
I agree about the debate being nothing but an attack on Hillary by 8 men(including Brian Williams and Tim Russert). Can anyone think of a single candidate(democrat or republican) who could have withstood the
2-hour relentless and gruelling scrutiny as well as she did? I am all for asking any and all tough questions of our presidential candidates, but the moderators should have distributed the questions evenly amongst all 7 of them. Of the 50 questions asked, 26 were for or about Hillary and Bill. We need to know as much about EACH of the candidates as possible to be able to make an informed and intelligent decision.
It always upsets me when celebrities drag their divorces through the media. I don’t care for Heather Mills, but I do know she is an avid activist for the land mines cause and donated all the money she received for “dancing with the stars” to that charity. One cannot judge Paul or Heather without knowing the details of the marriage and breakup and no one should have to go into hiding to escape from the harassment of the paparazzi.
Sherri’s NY segment was unnecessary and boring. She was adorable dancing with Ben Vereen yesterday. I did like the way she stressed her opinion about the press hounding celebrities, inspite of Whoopi once again trying to interrupt before Sherri could complete her thoughts.
Overall, the show had a good flow and quite enjoyable.
Just a thought—-wouldn’t it be a riot if in the absence of BW and EH Rosie was asked to guest host with JB,WG and SS?
November 1st, 2007 at 3:19 pm
Sandy,
I’m not a huge Hilliary fan, but I think she handled herself well. It showed that she is capable of standing her ground. The media seemed to only focus on her drivers license response. I agree with her position. It’s a tough call. You would like people to come out of the shadows, but you don’t want to reward them for breaking the law.
I’m sure next time she’ll be better prepared to answer that type of question. They should start calling these things question and answer sessions. The candidates really don’t have much time to debate each other.
November 1st, 2007 at 5:45 pm
I don’t know all the details about Heather Mills, in fact I only heard about her a few weeks ago. Apparently she appeared on the Today show and some other morning show. It’s big news in England. She recored some conversations with Paul. Here’s a link to the exchange:
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/showbiz/showbiznews.html?in_article_id=490848&in_page_id=1773&ico=Homepage&icl=TabModule&icc=picbox&ct=5
November 1st, 2007 at 6:07 pm
She was also interviewed by Diane Sawyer on GMA and was recently on a British show.
I don’t presume to know all the details of everything she has gone or is going through. If it is true that she is receiving death threats I feel awful for her and her daughter. They don’t deserve to be subjected to that. No one would. It may have been judgemental for me to call her a golddigger. But I see no other reason for her to turn down the settlement offered by Paul in January of this year. 32 million pounds. More than 70 million American dollars. There’s obviously so much we don’t know about them and will never know. I just think she is needlessly carrying this on. Divorce is awful for everyone and I can’t imagine how it would feel to have it aired out in public. I just think she’s made some bad judgements regarding how she is handling this.
November 1st, 2007 at 6:39 pm
Since the panelists are talking YET AGAIN about the tabloid press bugging celebrities, why on earth can’t they talk about how awful the tabloid-esque right-wing “press” such as Fox and the right-wing pundits and blogosphere goes after anyone who disagrees with, complains about, opposes, or jokes about the Bush administration? Isn’t this vastly more important than how mistreated Heather Mills feels she is? Naturally, the number-one person who comes to mind is Rosie, and of course they won’t mention THAT name. But … they’ve got someone else right there they could talk about: Whoopi.
Did any of them even bat an eye or say anything at all when Whoopi mentioned she had received DEATH THREATS? I mean, jeeze — that is alarming! When and why did she get them? Was it because she made jokes about Bush during a Kerry fund-raiser? They should be much more alarmed at this than what Heather Mills is going through.
The chilling effect on this show ever since Rosie opened up her mouth and, loudly, raised questions and complaints about Bush & his policies & actions is so scary.
I’m glad Joy was mad enough to bring up serious topics, but notice how it focused briefly on whether the Dems picked on Hilary (in other words, it was the campaign they talked about more than the issues) and then quickly went on to talk about Heather Mills, where they latched on to that for far too long.
November 1st, 2007 at 7:24 pm
Yvonne,
I agree we will never know the truth. People should think long and hard before entering into a relationship with a famous person. Peaches you’re so right about Rosie. I can’t remember any other celebrity that has been so victimized by the press…for no good reason.
November 1st, 2007 at 9:46 pm
The NY segment was terrific. I am so tired of hearing how Sabrina should not have been voted off of DWTS. The fans vote. It’s past the bedtime of her fans. This is all part of the show. It is clear she is seeing her dance partner. I felt Whoopie was picking on Carrie Ann. I heard her clearly say Tanaba. I can’t beleive she refused to say she did.
November 1st, 2007 at 10:15 pm
Rainlillie:
Sadly, and scarily, it’s not just Rosie. It’s anyone who criticizes this administration. And Rosie wasn’t really torn apart this badly until she got on The View and started asking questions and raising concerns about things some people don’t want to talk about. Here we are, six months after she’s gone, and The View spends more time on trivial crap than anything else. (Has Iran been mentioned at all?)
No … some of us do not find controvery entertaining or enjoy it just for the sake of it. We accept it, though, if it means speaking out and trying to raise public awareness about things that so many would rather we politely shove under the rug.
I don’t think The View will ever get the guts to make some kind of meaningful contribution to the seriously needed public debate about issues, as opposed to just bringing up the presidential horse race and accompanying trivia. But a girl can dream, and can keep on speaking up about it.
November 1st, 2007 at 11:11 pm
Peaches,
You will never know how much I agree with you. These are scary times. I use to think this administration can’t do this or do that, people are going to see through this bs. I’m still waiting, hoping and praying. Here’s a very scary article. The author was on the Colbert Report a few week ago.

I have been reading about Heather Mills in the British papers for a long time. This woman has a history that does not include Paul, and she hasn’t changed her modus operandi in many years. Her ex husband/fiance’s/boyfriends and their families have all given interviews of how she used them and then moved on. She was said to be into the exotic dancer/escort business as a young woman and has creatively changed her cv as she gained more notoriety.
Her pr expert quit a couple of days ago and admitted he told her to up her charity profile to gain sympathy. This latest turn on all the morning shows and the leaking of taped material just gives Paul more ammo as she tries to destroy him.
What I don’t understand is how he was foolish enough to listen to her and not have her sign a pre-nup. Was his ego was so inflated that he thought he had control???
Joy is not alone in thinking that Heather is a golddigger and hopefully she won’t get her own show over here. We embraced Fergie so I imagine Heather thinks we will do the same for her. I can just see her as a guest host on The View…or maybe Babs will interview her as one of the most fascinating, like Camilla.

My friend Av is a huge fan of Paul’s. and she filled me in on the history of the divorce. She said that Paul’s adult children were always against the marriage. They never liked Heather. I told my friend that you never really know what someone’s like until you’re in a relationship with them.
I know how divorces can be, when my aunt and uncle were going through a divorce, family members felt they had to take sides. My aunt was a stay at home mom without any income. My uncle was the breadwinner and everyone thought he was a all around good guy.
Little did we know that my aunt suffered through years of abuse. We were all shocked because he seemed like such a nice guy. He also cheated on her throughout the marriage. She finally had enough and decided to take her children and leave.
Family members actually accused her of breaking up her family. It would be tough for a non famous person to go up against one of the most famous people in the world. Heather could be a real witch .. I just don’t know. I do know that Paul is a very smart man, he didn’t get as far as got by being stupid.
November 2nd, 2007 at 11:55 am
A couple of more things about Heather then I’ll move on from this topic - She had a fiance she dumped a couple of days before the wedding for Paul. Not the worst thing someone can do I know but still pretty crappy. Also before she became an activist and involved with many charities she was a model for many years. So she had some money in her own right and also some previous experience with the press and UK paparazzi. Nothing compared to what she got into when she married Paul but she wouldn’t have been completely blind to it either.
(aka Yvonne …oops)

Is there any way to see a clip of Sabrina & Mark’s appearance on TV? I’ve looked everywhere for one, and I was sure your site would have it. I’ve been a DWTS fan since day 1 four years ago, and there were just too many voting anomalies (votes called in and recorded to other dancers, cellphones not being allowed the correct # of votes, & people not being able to log one & vote) for me to feel good about Sabrina & Mark’s departure. I’m one of those rare DWTS’s fans who really like to see the best dancers win, popularity be damned. JMHO. Valerie (a 52 y.o. grandmother & former dancer) in Seattle

Valerie: I haven’t found video yet of them from their appearance on The View. Sometimes the ABC website will have clips, but nothing is up yet. I will let you know if I find video of it!
