The View November 20th Recap: Barbara Walters Responds to Rosie O’Donnell’s Comments About The View
Today on The View, all five hosts were present. Joy Behar, Whoopi Goldberg, Barbara Walters, and Bill Geddie went out to dinner last night. Joy said that Barbara is an alcohol pusher and kept trying to get her and Bill to drink more. Joy said that Barbara knocked back a couple of martinis, but Barbara said she only had one and that was enough. Joy said that is because she weighs 10 pounds. Barbara regrets having chocolate souffle.
Barbara said that she is proud of the staff and crew because of the high ratings and many have been there for 12 years. Barbara said that some people who were on the show go on to great things like Lisa Ling and Meredith Vieira. She said that other people who have been on the show leave and feel they need to “dump on” the show, perhaps for their own publicity. Barbara said that if the shoe fits, those people need to “get on with your lives.” She added that “We are not perfect,” but things are good. Joy said that they are a dysfunctional family and they do get along pretty well. Elisabeth said that there have been difficult years, one more difficult than others, but that they have to have respect for each other to do what they do.
Barbara is annoyed by the fact that Michelle Obama gets up at 4:30 a.m. to work out 90 minutes three days a week. Barack Obama does 45-minute workout six days a week. Elisabeth thinks it is great because exercise is a great stress reliever. She said that personally exercise keeps her sane. Joy said that today she could not even get out of the bed until 8:15. Elisabeth said that is because she was boozing it up. Joy said that alcohol gives her strange dreams. Joy had a dream about Robert Stack last night and she also had a previous dream where Robert DeNiro was her doctor and told her she had six months to live.
The next topic was that a divorce settlement between Madonna and Guy Ritchie. The children will split time between NYC and London. Barbara said it was good that Ritchie did not try to go for more money, as others have, since there was no pre-nup.
Joy had a friend whose lesbian partner is ill in the hospital. She had to lie and said that she was her sister because they would not let her in since they were not married. Joy asked if that means that Steve cannot pull the plug on her? She wants him to be able to do that. Whoopi said that if you have it on paper it is not on an issue. Sherri brought up the Terry Schiavo case. Whoopi said that was an issue because it was not on paper. She said it has to be specific and name the person who has the decision-making power. Joy said, “Are you saying that I don’t have to get married?” Whoopi said that she doesn’t. Joy said that it is saying the vows in public that bothers her. Sherri and Elisabeth told her that she could do it in private. Elisabeth said they could be her bridesmaids. Barbara then said to her daughter “I am not ready for you to pull the plug.” Sherri told Joy to be sure to change the directive if she breaks up with Steve so he can’t pull the plug anymore.
If you want to break-up with someone you should do it now or have to wait February 20th because of the upcoming holidays.
There is no word yet whether Hillary Clinton will become Secretary of State. Whoopi thinks it is interesting that she has not decided yet. Joy thinks they are waiting for Bill Clinton to be vetted. Barbara mentioned some of Barack Obama’s other tentative appointments. Barbara said that she gives Bill Clinton credit because he is giving up speaking engagements and opening his financial records. Joy joked that he did not say he was giving up all engagements. Elisabeth said that Bill still owes Hillary a lot. Elisabeth wonders where the leak is coming from and suggested it was coming from the Clinton camp because it benefits her. Whoopi suggested that maybe it is not a leak and perhaps Clinton is just considering whether she wants she wants to give up her freedom as a Senator. Barbara said that if you care about your country and think you can make a difference, you would want the role. Joy said that the Secretary of the State needs to be close to the president.
Elisabeth said that she thinks it is interesting that the hatchets were buried so quickly. They all said that she buried the hatchet. Elisabeth said that she is supporting the new president, but is still waiting to see what happens.
Scheduled guests are Lily Tomlin and Kathryn Joosten from Desperate Housewives.
Today’s show also features a segment where Elisabeth Hasselbeck learns how to cook Thanksgiving for 20 people.
The View, Elisabeth Hasselbeck, Joy Behar, Barbara Walters, Lily Tomlin, Sherri Shepherd, Kathryn Joosten, Desperate Housewives, Thanksgiving, Whoopi Goldberg

November 20th, 2008 at 10:48 am
during the cooking segment, elizabeth kept repeating what the chef said and kept interrupting his sentences..it’s annoying habit when you’re talking to someone.
let the speaker finish, then ask questions.
November 20th, 2008 at 10:55 am
Wow! That was something, wasn’t it? I didn’t expect BW to respond to an interview by Rosie. Why bother? It’s over and the View has the highest ratings it has ever had. I thought it was kind of cheesy…….and made everyone uncomfortable. At least I know I was…..
November 20th, 2008 at 10:55 am
methinks BW doth protest too much!!!
November 20th, 2008 at 11:01 am
There is so much to comment on in today’s episode.
Elisabeth, if you keep chirping like that during a turkey cooking segment, they might mistake you for the bird, stuff you and toss you in the oven! Shut the hell up and let the expert show you how!
Barbara writes a book talking about who she slept with 30 years ago, which no one knew about until she wrote it, but everybody else is supposed to move on and not talk about their time at The View, which everybody knows about, because everybody saw it or can still see it on youTube. Of course, as soon as Barbara says to let it go, the pitbull, Elisabeth Hasselrosie has to get in one more dig about all the years being good except for maybe one. Biz-otch, you’re not coy or sassy, just nasty.
And as I said in the off-topic thread, Elisabeth may have just single-handedly put Bally’s Fitness out of business by declaring that exercise keeps her on an even keel.
ABC News has a magazine and DVD out about the election. I didn’t hear Elisabeth raise any objections. So, is it just bad that NBC did it? And NBC has a new Rosie show starting on Wednesday? Hhhmmmmmmmmmmmm.
November 20th, 2008 at 11:05 am
elizabeth knows not to bite the hand that feeds her, or does she? hmmm.
November 20th, 2008 at 11:14 am
Yea I hate to tell BW that these are GROWN WOMEN that she invited to her panel (Star Jones, Lisa Ling, Rosie, Debbie Matanpolous (?) and that they can say whatever they want about their time there and she or Bill Geddes can’t do a thing about it. She sounds like a disgruntled family member. We all saw the Rosie debacle live on television, we all saw Star Jones blindside BW and there is no denying any of it. So hold each other’s hands during the commercials and go out to dinner together and get on with it. Enjoy you high ratings enough said. She loves the ratings they get when Joy and Elizabeth tumble on the air, does she really think that in the future when one or both of them leave (maybe sooner than we think) that neither of them will write a book about their experiences behind the set on the view? I highly doubt it.
November 20th, 2008 at 11:19 am
I think that Barbara brings up these things to keep the controversy alive. Every time someone bashes or speaks about the show at all, it gives them publicity. By her bringing it up further gives it more publicity. This is how she keeps ratings. Sadly though, her integrity and reputation is deteriorating every time it happens. But she is a shrewd businesswoman and this only helps her business.
November 20th, 2008 at 11:20 am
Babs is always trying to cover her/shows ass
by repeating they get along and the show gets
good ratings..In all the years they have never won “Talk Show of the Year”. She needs to move on and quit bringing it up.
Thought it amuzing EH didn’t take part in the “night out”….Kids reason? Where was the nanny and husband? Saw through that one Lizzie.
November 20th, 2008 at 11:27 am
Hello,
#1,2,3,4,5!! Luv it!!
By 11:07 am., est, I was ready to HURL!!
What a low class show. They ALL look like fools.
Can you imagine what Lily and Kathryn were saying in the green room before their segment? LOL
About the EH Turkey segment, good thing I can cook. Heard no good advice over EH’S, yeh, yeh, yeh.
BW, you are just a bitter —–, that cannot control your girls on the panel. And you couldn’t keep the best ones that got away!!
November 20th, 2008 at 11:50 am
I remember that there was some controversy when Debbie M was booted from the show…..does anyone know what that was about? Was she not well liked by the other co hosts?
November 20th, 2008 at 11:58 am
What wendee said exactly. There is no reason for BW to even bring it up - but she knows that stirring the pot only helps her in the end. And the fact that her credibility only suffers more and more with each passing day is sad. True, but sad.
November 20th, 2008 at 12:16 pm
Are you kidding me? Barbara is miffed because Rosie had the nerve to contradict Barbara’s rosy (pun intended) perception of the goings on at the View but she apparently doesn’t care when a current panel member disrespects the incoming First Lady?
November 20th, 2008 at 12:30 pm
Did anyone else catch BW’s reference to her 12 years working on The View with Joy (CORRECT!!) and she said 6 with Elisabeth, PLEASE, 5 has been 5 too many. My math tells me fall 2003 to present is 5 years not 6. Guess Babs is just as bad at research as TLB.
November 20th, 2008 at 12:33 pm
Just doublechecked my info, lol, here is what is on The View webpage:
In November 2003, Elisabeth Hasselbeck was selected out of hundreds of contenders to permanently fill a vacant co-host chair on ABC’s The View.
November 20th, 2008 at 12:33 pm
Guys, I am officially taking a break from this show. It’s become too disingenuous, and I can no longer believe that any of their opinions are truly their own.
Plus, I think Little Donatella Versace, EH, is really one of the dumbest, most socially unaware and self-centered people I’ve ever seen on TV. On TV!
Have a great weekend everyone. I’m gonna do a week without The View and see if my brain cells come back. I’ll let you know how it goes.
November 20th, 2008 at 12:34 pm
Afternoon everyone.
I’d like to say, I loved Joy’s sweater today.
The BW comment on Rosie, was a surprise. She dragged on the bonding/dinner story into how long each had been there-only to drop a bomb at the end. She droned on so long, I had to rewind and pay attention to what she said! LOL It was awkward and not her normal style, but then again she has been “off” for a while now.
The chef segment was just plain silly. They rushed through it and I felt gave the man no respect for what he was trying to show them. Whoopi coming out to eat and make faces is really distracting. The timing of that would have been better toward the end. I got the impression that EH is going to order the dinner pre-made or maybe one of the moms will cook it. She really didn’t come across as wanting to learn anything. When the chef walked away from the her mashing the ingredients for the stew, you could see his disdain.
With Rosie’s name being brought up today, I was thinking during the cooking segment that I miss when she did those things. Her craft segments were cool.
November 20th, 2008 at 12:38 pm
I wanted to add- I thought Sherri’s wig today was very flatering for her face, she looks good with it pulled back.
But also on the subject of Sherri, is she on this show? I like to count how many words she actually said today! Her grammer drives me crazy, but it seems like more often than not, she is the silent co-host.
November 20th, 2008 at 12:41 pm
LOL I am complaining about Sherri’s grammer and looked after posting to all my mistakes! To myself: “Hello, pot this is kettle!” : lol :
It is her usage of words that bothers me. Specifically, the word, “Its.”
November 20th, 2008 at 12:41 pm
#14 - Rachel Anna
I’m with you! We all should take a time-out.
Time to get back to “Being Thankful for our
blessings in our own lives!”
Have a Wonderful Thanksgiving!!
November 20th, 2008 at 1:03 pm
I missed the part about the dining out and dissing Rosie..sour grapes coming from Bawa and EH. Of course EH has to say catty/nasty things about Rosie, she’s wired that way..to say nasty things about anyone that isn’t a goper. May she rot! I saw who was doing the stirring at the bowl and went over to KathyLee/Hoda.
I laughed when Joy said that DeNiro told her,as her doctor, that she had only 6 months to live! And dreaming about Robert Stack? Who dreams about Robert Stack for gosh sakes! Funny stuff.
When Bawa said that Lisa Ling and others had gone on to do great things, I was hoping that EH would get the HINT and move on out!
November 20th, 2008 at 1:03 pm
you know what, i’ll take a break also.
i’ll come back when the holidays end.
to all: have a great thanksgiving!
November 20th, 2008 at 1:09 pm
#3 Totally agree! BW makes much ado about nothing about Rosie’s comments yet STILL lets EH’s dissing of MO go by? Hypocrite.
November 20th, 2008 at 1:11 pm
BW’s response was appropriate, IMO.
November 20th, 2008 at 1:13 pm
Oops-this was already addressed-sorry to repeat, in a hurry…so #11, I will say well put, I agree……and yes, this IS a good time to take a break from this insipid show….obviously BW and BG aren’t ever going to change the format, the ratings are higher than ever, blahblah, so it is time to find something more intelligent to watch….
November 20th, 2008 at 1:13 pm
susieq #11 - I couldn’t agree with you more.
BW is embarressed and a little pissed I am sure that Rosie is telling the TRUTH but for EH to behave as she has with guests is somehow acceptable.
BQ is no longer seeming like such an icon but moving towards Jerry Springer……..
I am off the show for now as well. I will also be writing to ABC to tell them as such.
November 20th, 2008 at 1:23 pm
Starr was never really my cup of tea and when she left I thought she handled it badly but now I kinda see things differently…If her bridzilla behavior was such a turn off to viewers then why didn’t they rein her in? She didn’t produce or book the show. Couldn’t someone in charge have told her “Enough with your wedding”? I read somewhere that ratings were good in the lead up to her wedding so it would seem that Barbara and Bill Geddie were happy to benefit from that but afterwards decided they didn’t need her anymore.
It was Rosie’s choice to leave and I think if BW and BG had had their way she would still be there and they would be exploiting Rosie’s and Elisabeths differing political leanings.
If Elisabeth ever leaves the View I’m sure to further her career she will throw everyone under the bus.
November 20th, 2008 at 1:23 pm
I thought the timing of going out to dinner together and being buddies about it was just too obvious. And I think Rosie set herself up for the diss by using The View in all of her promos that I’ve seen. I think it’s lame she’s using The View to promo her new show. I don’t get the link? She knows how extremely fake they are, so why give them the ammunition? She didn’t think the show could succeed on it’s own with the drama and hype?
I completely agree with Elisabeth about the exercising. That is about the only thing her and I have in common it seems. Everyone should exercise, fat, thin whatever…it’s not about that. It’s about getting your body moving. It’s as much for your mental health as it is for your physical health.
November 20th, 2008 at 1:26 pm
I just watched the chef part of the show, wow, was he upset with EH, & rightfully so, she splashed red wine on him & made a total ass of herself.
I always had 2 kids to look after & still cooked great holiday meals as well as everyday meals for my family. Common sense is a valuble commodity that is truly lacking among many, many other qualities in this poor excuse for a cohost. Please go away, far away Elisabeth!!!
Calling her a ditz is being nice!
November 20th, 2008 at 1:28 pm
When BW made the comment about “get on with your lives” I thought that perhaps she should take her own advice?!? Why is she bringing this up and giving it “energy” if she finds it so inappropriate? High school.
Love that Lizzy couldn’t make it to dinner with her loser husband AND a nanny at home. I don’t buy it either.
November 20th, 2008 at 1:35 pm
Admittedly I was hooked on this show….no more, I really have been able to miss it and not MISS it! I too will take a break!
Happy Thanksgiving to All!!
November 20th, 2008 at 1:59 pm
I just listened to the interview section with Elisabeth and that chef…(listened and not watched) and in the first 2 and a half minutes, she said Okay 22 times at my count. It was obnoxious.
November 20th, 2008 at 2:02 pm
Julia, here’s some info about Debbie M’s unhappy association with The View:
http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,615443,00.html
November 20th, 2008 at 2:07 pm
I’m ready to give it up too. Tomorrow, I will watch no more. Feels good.
November 20th, 2008 at 2:32 pm
#14 Good call, Rachel Anna.
November 20th, 2008 at 2:36 pm
Diane10, you need to take a break yourself. I’m afraid one of these days your head is going to spin around like the Exorcist.
November 20th, 2008 at 2:40 pm
Thanks Winnie,
I know you are busy, so I’d like to say that I really do appreciate the recaps that you are able to do.
I didn’t see the show. Doesn’t sound like I missed a lot.
IMO, Barb had every right to respond to any comments about her and The View. Made by anyone, if she chose to. Especially a negative one.
I know if someone made a comment about me, or my show, especially a negative one, I might feel the need to respond, and I would do so.
That said, I like Rosie, very much. I enjoyed her on the View. I’m sorry that it didn’t work out, and she didn’t sign another contract. I think, she chose to do what was best for herself.
I think Rosie did bring much higher ratings to The View. I also tend to think that The View (producers) learned that some controversy, especially political, brought more viewers, and higher ratings. Thus they used that this year, I believe.
I don’t fault them for that at all.
After all that’s what T.V. shows are all about, the higher the ratings, the better for them.
As for Rosie’s comment, or any of the others, I think they might each have a different prospective of how things were when Rosie was there.
November 20th, 2008 at 2:44 pm
Rachel Anna;
I’ve enjoyed your posts. Kelly, too.
It does help to take a break from that numb nut stuff.
November 20th, 2008 at 3:06 pm
ShannonP
You brought up a good point about Rosie using the View in her commericals for her new shows, yes that does make what BW said make more sense. I didn’t really have an opinion about it, but that makes sense to me.
Also, Sandy in post #35, ITA with your entire post.
They are both benifiting from the attention that both shows are getting right now, with Rosie mentioning them and BW responding.
November 20th, 2008 at 3:09 pm
I have watched the View since the very beginning. I recall Debbie M on that show. I did not know what had happened back then as to why she was fired. I thought she contributed as well as the rest.
#3l Emma - Thanks for posting that website!

June Says:
“With Rosie’s name being brought up today, I was thinking during the cooking segment that I miss when she did those things. Her craft segments were cool.”
I agree. Rosie made those segments fun. Not only the craft, but also cooking too. I remember one where they each sampled wine or beer. The host from the show Top Chef was on…anyway it was not only fun, it was also funny.
November 20th, 2008 at 3:12 pm
June Says:
“Whoopi coming out to eat and make faces is really distracting”
MY RESPONSE: Whoopi is still doing that?
Someone needs to tell her it’s no longer funny. I agree, it’s very distracting
November 20th, 2008 at 3:15 pm
Yeah Stacee, she was making faces like it was yummy, but still the camera was focused on her! I agree that and the accents need to go!
November 20th, 2008 at 3:15 pm
Danielle Says:
“Diane10, you need to take a break yourself. I’m afraid one of these days your head is going to spin around like the Exorcist.”
MY RESPONSE: LOL
November 20th, 2008 at 4:27 pm
Thanks Emma for the info…
November 20th, 2008 at 4:39 pm
Be sure you catch Rosie’s response to today’s episode. If there was ever any question, BW is now officially an Old Biddy.
November 20th, 2008 at 5:02 pm
Her response was great. Go to her blog people. Hysterical.
November 20th, 2008 at 5:16 pm
the nbc schedule says that rosie o’donnell will be a guest on late night with conan o’brien tonight
November 20th, 2008 at 5:33 pm
with all of you people leaving who will I have to argue/agree with??
What a terrible idea
November 20th, 2008 at 6:47 pm
The ratings must be down post election for Rosie to be a topic again.
To those of you “leaving”, I left the show not long after Rosie. I keep track by reading Winnie’s recaps, and once in a while, if a guest I like is going to be on, I tune in for a bit. Funny, you won’t have withdrawal.
November 20th, 2008 at 6:47 pm
We need you in the off-top Rog!
Thanks GraceKelly!!!!!!! Likewise.
November 20th, 2008 at 6:48 pm
I watched the clip again on E News Daily or something like that. When EH chirped in with “some incredible years, one not so incredible year” Or whatever she said to that affect, it seems to me that THAT particular year was the one that put the View on the map. That year with Rosie the topics turned to politics, gay rights, autism, giveaways, crafts, food segements that we all enjoyed…so they have a LOT to be grateful to Rosie for. And no one heard of EH or cared about what came out of her mouth until Rosie started sparing with her. I don’t even remember her or what she ever said before that particular year. I believe until this year that THAT particular year was their highest rated also…
November 20th, 2008 at 7:01 pm
Great Rosie Response….Love that Ro!!!

I join Kelly “Go Rosie”
To Rosie; “Break a Leg” kiddo.
November 20th, 2008 at 8:13 pm
1. What to Rosie say?
2. EH is so full of air. Respect is just the word I think of when I think of EH. Respect for her co-hosts when shoving mugs in their face. Respect for co-hosts when going on Hannity and making nasty comments. Respect for guests when she makes nasty and unfair (and probably unethical) comments about them at a political meeting. Respect for her co-hosts when the interrupts them. Yep. That’s what I think of. Practically a synonym, EH & respect - NOT.
November 20th, 2008 at 8:24 pm
Go Rosie Go!!!!!!!!!
November 20th, 2008 at 9:02 pm
i guess everything is ok with Barbara as long as you don’t confront or criticize her publicly. That’s probably why Elisabeth, despite her terrible behaviour, is still there. Elisabeth just kisses Barbara’s ass.
November 20th, 2008 at 9:13 pm
Totally agree with your post Lorraine. Why do the hosts act like that was such a bad year? It is THE REASON The View is even a topic of conversation today. Sure it was on for 10 years before then but how much press did they use to get and how high were their ratings? Rosie made that show sooo much better and they should acknowledge that!!
With all that said, I hope Rosie NEVER mentions EH in any interview again, theres no need for it… and I hope her variety show is a HUGE success.

June Says:
LOL I am complaining about Sherri’s grammer…

ME TOO! It took me forever to figure it out and drove me crazy but what she does is use ‘its’ instead of ‘there’ as in:
“There’s a guy over there” and she says “It’s a guy over there”
It’s right up their with Whoopie’s Valley Girl - makes me craaaazy….
November 21st, 2008 at 3:07 am
I mean, right up there (not their).
duh.
lol, June, I did the same exact thing!
November 21st, 2008 at 10:01 am
Lorraine #52 - She nailed it. The View went for years as a lackluster, mediocre, daytime talk show - AND IT WAS ROSIE , in 2005/06 t…”THAT particular year was the one that put the View on the map. That year with Rosie the topics turned to politics, gay rights, autism, giveaways, crafts, food segments that we all enjoyed…”.
BTW - I will never forgive EH for the disrespectful thing she said about Michele Obama at the Republican Nat’l Convention.
Come on Babs - EH should have been nailed for that.
November 21st, 2008 at 10:24 am
I posted this on the non-View thread but meant to post it here:
—————————-
Just my opinion, folks - I don’t believe that Le Cirque story with dinner with BW, WG, BG, and JB AT ALL! I think they conjured up this story that they all went to dinner so that BW could address what Rosie had intoned about no comaraderie after the shows. I so don’t believe that they went to dinner and is why Sheri looked so uncomfortable and said she was *sick* - and EH said she had “sick kids at home and couldn’t go.” I think they conjured up the martini amount story (who drank what) and I think the entire thing was a TOTAL LIE.
To me, the entire Le Cirque story was total B.S. and Sheri doesn’t like to lie ever.
Just my *take* on the show and going-out-to-dinner story.
Have a nice weekend!

#64 LMAO
November 21st, 2008 at 1:26 pm
#66 Miamivision…I think you may be right! Your story sounds more plausible than BW’s. Whoopi and Joy must really need those paychecks. Sad.
November 21st, 2008 at 1:30 pm
#68 - NanW - I think they ALL looked very uncomfortable while telling the Le Cirque story and I am sure that Joy went along with it because it is easy for her to lie to the public (though I do like her) as well as Whoopi can lie fairly easily I do believe (and I like her too). They went on far too long about the restaurant with Sheri looking very uncomfortable. We all know BW lies through her teeth so I don’t have to reiterate on her.
NanW - I always say GMTA (great minds think alike). *laughs*
Have a good one!!
