The View November 23rd Recap: Celine Dion
Today on The View, Barbara Walters brought up an article that Maureen Down wrote in The New York Times. Dowd wrote that things have not changed in that women still have to “dumb down” to get a man. She also wrote that if a woman puts that she is a lawyer on an internet dating profile, she will not be called, but if she puts flight attendant, she will.
Joy Behar said that she thinks that is still true to some extent. Sherri Shepherd added that no one wants Hillary Clinton to act dumb running for president, but if she was trying to date, she may have to. Whoopi Goldberg pointed out that often when men say that a woman is smart, they will say, “she thinks like a man.” Whoopi thinks that women should not dumb down and should just accept the fact that they might have to be on their own.
Joy said that men are eight times more likely to ask for a raise than a woman. Barbara pointed out that if a man has a short temper or is tough, that is a compliment, while it is not acceptable for a woman. Sherri also said that if a man fixes a car, the wife should puff him up and make him feel better about himself. Whoopi said that you can compliment a man for a genuine job well done, but should not just do it because he feels blue. She added, “I feel blue too.”
The next topic was whether men can fall in love with robots. Yes, I am serious. Apparently there is some projection that in the future men will be having sex with robots. Whoopi pointed out that women have had robotics in their sex life for a while and Barbara had to explain to Sherri that Whoopi was talking about vibrators.
Are all parents eventually resented by their children? Barbara said resentment in adolescence it is part of growing up, but if it continues to adulthood than there is a problem. Joy said that she was annoyed by her parents all the time until she got married. Sherri hated her parents and disagreed with everything they said. She wrote her father and apologized for all that she had done to him. (Although she slipped and said “All that he had done to me.”)
Sherri was raised as a Jehovah’s Witness, but is no longer part of that church. They believe that Jesus will come back, the earth will be destroyed, and there will be a new earth. Anyone who is not a Jehovah’s Witness will not survive. Some of the people will be chosen to go to heaven to help God rule. Sherri got out of the religion because her father was ex-communicated from the religion after asking too many questions. The church told her to stop talking to her father, so she got out of it.
Whoopi said it is similar in the Catholic church that you cannot ask too many questions. She said that the church won’t acknowledge that Jesus was a Jewish rabbi. Barbara said that in religion you have to take things on faith and not question them, such as the Immaculate Conception.
Whoopi said that she told her daughter everything that she thought about issues like the church and answered all her questions, while other parents did not. As a result, the other kids would leave her behind because she was so different. Barbara said that her mother used to tell her all her problems, so she did not tell her own daughter, Jackie, her problems. As a result, Jackie thought that Barbara did not have any problems. Joy said that Steve always says that no matter what you do as a parent it will be wrong.
Celine Dion appeared on the show. She is the youngest of fourteen children. She never talked back to her parents. They were never poor, but never had money. They encouraged her in music. Celine met her current husband when she was only 12. Her mother wrote her first song. Then she sang a bit of it on the show (in French). She said that her success was a family success.
Her son is going to be seven soon and she called him a miracle baby. She just finished five years of her show in Las Vegas. Doing the same show every night gave her a comfort zone and stability in her home because she was home every night. She will not be taking time off and will be going on tour starting in February because she is very passionate about what she does. Her family will go on the world tour with her.
Celine said that she was not worried about her Vegas show doing well, but there was a negative vibe in the industry about her doing her show. After she started rehearsals, she knew that it would do well.
Bette Midler will be doing a show in that theater. Joy asked Celine if she had any advice for Bette. Celine said that she is so talentled that she would never give her any advice. The only advice that she had was “The stage is hot, baby, you can go for it.”
Celine then performed the title song off of her new album Taking Changes.
Chef Michael Symon, winner of The Next Iron Chef appeared on the show to demonstrate what to do with Thanksgiving leftovers. He demonstrated how to make a turkey calzone. Take bacon and chop it into pieces. (Joy asked if he was going to drain it first, and when he said no, she joked “Just put that cholesterol right on my arteries, why don’t you!). Put the bacon and leftover turkey on a calzone with some fresh basil and smoked gouda. Add some toasted pine nuts. Fold the dough over and crimp the edges. Bake it in an oven (he didn’t say what temp or how long). Joy said that she is off carbs now, so she just ate the inside.
When Joy asked where you could get fresh basil in the winter, Symon said that people can grow it in their plant boxes. Sherri joked that Joy could grow it with that other stuff she grows in her house. Joy said “those days are over.” Sherri said, “You thought she was just naturally funny?”
Celine Dion returned and sang “Alone,” also from her new CD.

thanks Winnie for the recap. Your dedication to your blog is admirable.
I didn’t watch the show today, had I, I would have agreed with Whoopi, I don’t think women should ever dumb down.

The first conversation reminded me of an experience I had at a bar in University. We were at a table full of guys who were friends with my friend’s boyfriend. At the time, I worked part time in a day care center. When I told two of the guys that I worked their, their eyes lit up. I had never seen such male approval before, so I didn’t tell them that I went to the same university they did and it didn’t come up until I met one of them in a class.
