The View November 26th Recap: Chandra Wilson
Today on The View, they started the show talking about their Thanksgiving. Joy Behar went to her daughter’s in-laws house. They are in the funeral business and the aunt got a “death call” just as they were sitting down to eat. Sherri was proud of herself for only having one plate of dinner and eating in moderation. She also went shopping on Black Friday at 4:00 a.m. with her sisters.
Barbara Walters turned in the first draft of her memoir. She hates the book because it is too personal and she has been working on it for too long. It is set to come out in May. She will also be doing an audio book of it. She would not reveal the title, but said that it is a good title. Yesterday she watched Godfather II on television in the bathroom. She watched for over four hours and then her doorbell rang and she had to miss the ending. Joy said, “Everyone dies.”
Whoopi Goldberg slept all weekend and felt great today. She did not eat all weekend.
Barack Obama said that he tried marijuana, and inhaled. Some people thought maybe that he should not have revealed this. Barbara thinks that is improper for parents to reveal that because their child will think that they can do it because the parent did. Whoopi said that it is worse for your child to find out from a family member and think you were hiding it from them. Sherri thinks that it makes you are easier to relate to and not perfect. Whoopi said that when they were growing up, their parents drank alcohol and they have not emulated them. Sherri said that she did not drink because there are a lot of alcoholics in her family.
According to a study, moderate drinkers are among the healthiest people because of the various health benefits of alcohol. Barbara also said that to get the health benefits of red wine, you need to drink a lot of it. They are also trying to develop a pill to mimic the healthy benefits of wine. Whoopi said that she does not drink and prefers “the plant in the corner.” She said that, really, she doesn’t smoke pot anymore or drink, and her only vice is cigarettes. Her quitting is going well and she has decreased her smoking quite a bit.
John Edwards and Michelle Obama both canceled their appearances on The View in support of the writer’s strike. Whoopi is in the writer’s guild and said that the show supports the writers, but The View is not a show with monologues and is unscripted. They do have two writers who write for special segments, but the majority of the show is not scripted. Joy said that the reason they are not coming on is because they have to cater to the union vote.
A former fiancee of Drew Peterson from 25 years ago went on The Today Show and said that Peterson was verbally abusive toward her and “difficult,” but didn’t beat her up. He did push her to the ground and straddle her. She thought that because of his behavior, she should come forward. Barbara asked if she have come forward and didn’t we all had a boyfriend who was difficult? Barbara said that she had a boyfriend who got jealous because she was dating someone else and fought with the other man in the street. Joy said that the woman should have just told the police about it and didn’t need to go on a morning show to talk about it.
Chandra Wilson of Grey’s Anatomy appeared on the show. She said that people think that she is mean like her character on the show and won’t approach her in the grocery store. She has three kids, aged 14, 9, and 2.
When she auditioned, they were looking for a short, white, blond female. Whoopi said that the characters always start out that way. Joy said that she once auditioned for a role that eventually went to a short black boy.
Whoopi said that she loves Chandra’s Folgers coffee commercials. Those are her real children in the commercial. Go to wakeupspecial.com to see outtakes. Folgers is partnering with Habitat for Humanity and you can vote on the website and Folgers will make a donation to the charity. (Former host Lisa Ling also is featured in the commercials and on the website).
Sherri once wrote a letter to Chandra many years ago when she was on a sitcom and she wrote her back. Sherri said that she was so happy that there was another Black woman on TV.
Two teenagers, Brittany and Robbie Bergquist, appeared on the show to talk about their “Cell Phones for Soldiers” program, which has raised over a million dollars since they started it in 2004. They collect and recycle donated cell phones and use the money to buy phone cards to send to soldiers who request. They have sent over 100,000 of them to the soldiers. There are 6,000 drop-off sites throughout the country. They have recently partnered with AT&T and 1800 of their stores are now also drop-off sites. A representative from AT&T appeared on the show and presented each of them with a $100,000 scholarship to college for all of their hard work!

Brittany and Robbie Bergquist parents should be proud. What wonderful kids! You’re never too young to donate and help others.

“…Peterson was verbally abusive toward her and “difficult,” but didn’t beat her up. He did push her to the ground and straddle her.”
Sounds like Peterson was much more than verbally abusive.

New Linda: sounds that way to me too. I feel like Barbara was minimizing his conduct for some reason.

Hopefully all the facts will come out about this guy. It sounds as if he had a lot of friends within the department and some of his bad behavior may have been overlooked.

It’s so important for women to recognize the warning signs of a potential abuser. My aunt spent years in an abusive marriage. Looking back the signs were there, but we all ignored them. We thought my Uncle was a great guy, little did we know he had a very dark side. I watched the interview this morning with Peterson’s former fiancee and everything she talked about was exactly the kind of behavior my aunt had to endure.

I agree Rainlillie, the parents of Brittany & Robbie, can be very proud of their children, and I’m sure that they are. I was go happy that AT&T presented them with scholarships for college, it made me tear up.
I as well agree with New Linda, in regards to Drew Peterson, he sounds much more than verbally abusive to me as well. Holding someone down and sitting on them and pinning their arms is a lot more than “verbal” abuse.
I believe she made a wise choice many years ago to not continue her relationship with him.
I normaly would agree with Joy, that she should have told her story to the police, instead of going on national Tv with in.
BUT..
She said she did this in hopes that it might help some other young woman who are in a controlling relationship or who See’s any red flags to pay attention and get out of a relationship like that.
In that sense I agree with her, and I understand why she might want to warn other young women.
I Enjoyed seeing Chandra. I too really like her commercials.
…Thanks Winnie for the link to Folgers to vote, Habitat for Humanity is a well worthy fondation.

I worked in a safe house for battered women and it’s amazing how much they downplayed the abuse. A woman left the safe house because she heard stories from the other women and she believed that she didn’t have it that bad…she got slapped around every Friday. she didn’t get hit every day and he never punched her. in her mind, compared to the other men, she had a real winner.

I thought the show was blah.
I enjoyed seeing Chandra.
The Bergquist kids’ story was inspiring and admirable. I think it’s so wonderful that they get the scholarships.
I think Sherri does a much better job during the guest interview segments.

I’m very disappointed that Mrs. Obama and John Edwards will not be on the View. As BW said the View doesn’t use writers so, I really don’t see why the strike would even be an issue. Obviously, Mrs. Obama and the Edwards haven’t watched the View, if they had, they would know there’s no way writers are writing this stiff… and if they were they should be fired, not on strike LOL!

I thought it was slow today and didn’t watch the whole show. Bab’s skirting around the abuse story got under my skin too. She is an idiot at times. I did like Sherri’s story about her Thanksgiving activities. I am warming up to her as she seems to be the only thing that isn’t DOA on the panel.
A thanks to Winnie for posting the future guests. I am going to try and get the next couple of days under my belt as they look interesting. Also thanks for the Rosie speech, she is amazing on her feet.

Stacee,
I agree, i think Sherri just needed time to adjust and I don’t think a live show is very easy to do.
New Linda
I can understand the thinking’s of some of those women.
I was in an abusive relationship myself for 8 years.(first marriage, and the first 2 weren’t bad) People wonder why one would stay. It’s “VERY complicated”, there are many reasons all woven together. For me, I was young, 18, when I entered the relationship. I really loved my husband, we had a child, and I kept hoping, and I thought he would change. He also drank and that played a part in it. I thought if he quit drinking all would be okay. There were other things involved as well, like I said, it’s complicated.
Long story short,…he didn’t change of course. I finally had the insight to know I couldn’t raise my child in this type of environment,.. and insight of other things as well. I left him.
A year later I met a wonderful man, we married and have been for 26 years.
Anyway I understand the thinking’s of some women in abusive relationships.

Sorry to hear that, Sandy. My father was abusive towards my mother for many years and then abusive towards the kids.
I also thought that if my father quit drinking that he would change. Well, he did somewhat. After he stopped drinking he was no longer physically abusive towards mom (verbal abuse still continued), but continued to be with us kids.
It was a heart breaking experience for me to learn that his abuse wasn’t due to drinking because I could no longer fantasize that it was the “alcohol talking.” All those years it was my real father. There was no mask he was hiding behind.
Due to old age he has mellowed out. Above everything else he’s my father and I love him.

Verbal abuse can be just as harmful as physical abuse. Sometimes the scars heal, but the other wounds are carried inside a person. I myself have never been in an abusive relationship. I didn’t know about my aunts abuse until recently. When I was in high school, my best friends boy friend use to abuse her. She would break up with him and a week later they’d be back together.
She always made excuses for him. She would say he had a rough childhood or he’s really not like this all the time. She married him and had three children. We’re no longer in touch, last I heard he went to jail for selling drugs.

New Linda,
Thank you!..I used it as a learning experience in life. As i learned i was able to give guidance and advise to my daughters.
My X and I were better friends after our divorce, and he did quit drinking finally..about 12 years ago.
I’m so sorry that you had to endure the hurt of an abusive parent.
Due to old age he has mellowed out. Above everything else he’s my father and I love him.
I understand very well.
Rainlillie, I agree, verbal abuse can be just as harmful as physical abuse. ,,,Maybe even on a longer term. It sure can and does give one very low self esteem.
