The View November 7th Recap: Damon Wayans
Barbara Walters started today’s episode of The View talking about how she was kissed by Tom Cruise last night at an event. They all talked about what a good actor he is and how perhaps because he is so good looking that he acting ability is overlooked.
They next talked about Dancing with the Stars. Whoopi Goldberg said that she watched it on Monday and said that she would never watch it again, but she woke up last night and realized she didn’t watch Tuesday to find out who won. Jane Seymour was sent home. Sherri Shepherd said that Jane referenced Johnny and June Cash a lot on Monday and thought that would get votes for her. (I said in my recap of the episode that I thought it was cheap ploy to get votes. Maybe others were turned off by it too). Sherri then joked that if she was on the show, she would garner sympathy by dedicating the dances to her son who was born premature.
Whoopi acknowleged the passing of Marie and Donnie Osmond’s father. Barbara remarked on the large number of children and grandchildren in that family. Whoopi said that Mormon and Catholic families are like that. She said, “Remember when we were kids? Catholic families had 482 kids and one of ‘em was always Black.”
Whoopi showed her shoes, which were gold sneakers with her face on them. Sherri wants shoes with her face on them.
Next Whoopi talked about a book that Oprah Winfrey had in her book club called The Education of Little Tree. The author of the book, who is now deceased, has been identified as a KKK member. She asked if that takes away from the fact that it is a good book. Joy said that for her the artist is separate from the art. Sherri asked if Hitler put out a good children’s book, would they be able to separate it from the author? Whoopi said that it is a book for young people, about young people and it had nothing to do with the KKK.
Oprah may have known of the man’s background when she first put the book on her list (they weren’t sure), but has now taken the book off her list. Barbara said that you would not ban a painter for his beliefs. She added that she thought that Oprah found it to be personally offensive to her based on her life. Joy said that is a slippery slope. Sherri is concerned where the proceeds for the book are going. Whoopi said that people have thought that she is a miserable person and did not like her work because of it.
Joy said that in the last Presidential debate, everyone was “piling up on” Hilary Clinton. Bill Clinton compared it to the “swift boat” commercials against John Kerry in the last election. Barbara said that this was not an organized campaign against her by an outside agency like happened with Kerry, but rather was criticism by her democratic fellow candidates.
There is a new planet that could have life on it. Barbara said that it opens up a lot of religious debate, like “Did God make this planet?” and “Did Jesus walk on this planet?” Sherri joked that she just wants to know if there are single men on this new planet. Whoopi told her that she should just keep being a great actress and making her own money and then she won’t have to worry about it.
Damon Wayans appeared on the show to promote his comedy show in New York City. He said that Michael Richards made him be more honest in his comedy. He thinks that we are far too hypocritical about the use of the n-word. He said that racism is not in a word. It is in how you treat somebody. Someone can say, “Hey African-American we are not hiring you” and he would rather hear (something that was beeped out; I would imagine it was the n-word along with something else. Kind of hard for him to make his point when they beep out the whole phrase). Joy said that she doesn’t even like to hear the word.
Damon said that it seems like Dog the Bounty Hunter has a very dysfunctional family. He said that Dog is not out there arresting white people on his show, he is arresting ethnic people. He added that Dog was trying to be honest with his son, saying he wanted to use a word in his house. Joy asked Damon what he thought about Imus and Damon said, “What happened to (freedom of speech) and expressing yourself?” At least he knows where Imus stands. He added that when Imus called the basketball players “Nappy-headed hos,” Damon thought, “Wow, he’s right.”
Sherri revealed that Damon fired her from her first job on My Wife and Kids. He said that the scene was not working and everyone in the scene got fired and he just did it to prepare her to be on The View.
He is single and can’t find a woman who will do “the fundamentals,” including cooking. He said that if she makes as much money as him then they can talk about him doing some of the cooking, but he hasn’t met that woman yet. Sherri got animated when he said that a woman should cook for him and acted like she wanted to have at him, but Whoopi pointed at her and said “Don’t you start!”
Kayce Freed Jennings, widow of Peter Jennings, appeared on the show to promote a book about his life called Peter Jennings: A Reporter’s Life. The book features memories and stories from many of his former colleagues, including Barbara Walters. Kayce was also Barbara’s producer on 20/20.
Peter never finished high school and he was insecure about it. He had a very short attention span and was very restless. Despite that, he was a serious learner. Peter used to always carry a copy of the constitution with him everywhere he went. He was both a Canadian and American citizen.
Barbara said that when she worked with Peter he would often bring her to tears and could be very harsh. Then Kayce would e-mail her letters of apology. Kayce said that Peter was hugely demanding of everyone around him, as well as himself. He was sometimes a bit impatient and it would come out wrong. Barbara said that he acted like a little boy sometimes. Kayce said that his boyish quality was both a strength and a weakness.
Colbie Caillat then sang her song “Bubbly” off of her album Coco.

I personally thought it was unbelievably tacky of those women to ridicule Jane Seymour for trying to offer a tribute to a close friend. Johnny’s own granddaughter was in the audience and clearly appreciated what Jane was trying to do, and Joy, Sherry, Whoopie and Barbara (by not stopping it) ruined that for her. To accuse Jane of using that dance as a ploy for votes I thought was disgusting. Those women oozed of jealousy today and showed how little class they themselves have. I think the View owes Jane an apology for today, I know after her appearance tomorrow I won’t be watching the View again.

I agree Mary Ann. The ladies can be exceptionally rude to their guests, even when they’re sitting right there with them–Ross Matthews case in point.
I couldn’t believe Sherri was saying that stuff about Jane, knowing she’d be there the next day. I’m even more surprised that they let her introduce Jane today.

Jane must be a good sport, because she still came on the show. I don’t watch Dancing with the stars. Is it common practice for the contestants to dedicate dances to someone?

MAN TALKING ABOUT THE GREEN EYED MONSTER!!! THOSE WOMEN ON THE VEIW NEED TO BE PUT OUT IN A PASTURE SOMEWHERE. NO CLASS. NO NOTHING. JANE IS TRUE CLASS. SHE HAD EVERY RIGHT TO DEDICATE HER “QUICKSTEP” DANCE TO HER TWO BELOVED FRIENDS. THE VIEW STINKS AND AND I WOULDN’T WATCH IT FOR ANYTHING. JANE IS PURE CLASS AND HAS SO MUCH GOING FOR HER. AND THOSE OLD HAS BEENS NEED TO GET A REAL LIFE. THEY ARE SUCH MORONS.

I don’t watch Dancing with the Stars and could care less about that.
But it bugs me to no end that the age of these women is what is being criticized so often on this blog. I understand I might just be “too sensitive” about this since I am 54 years old, and obviously a lot older than many of you. But. do you really think that a panel of women who are much younger, less seasoned, and less experienced than Babs and Joy would be NECESSARILY more interesting? The problem with Babs isn’t that she’s old; it’s that she is more interested in hanging on to her life of status and high society friendships and alliances than anything else. It’s a shame, to me, because she was indeed a trailblazer and had a lot of fascinating experiences in the workplace before the Babs Specials and The View. She has a lot she could contribute, and I think she still does sometimes, but it gets overshadowed by her obvious concerns about not offending people with whom she might snag an interview, or who might be sitting next to her at her next dinner party or event. I don’t disagee with any assessment of her as being cold or calculating or manipulative or self-serving … but to toss out completely her work experiences and what she, or someone else like her, *could” contribute seems like such a shame. But then I’ve always thought old people, of both sexes, were more interesting than other people seem to think they are. So … maybe “it’s just me.” Sorry for gettting on an old-person’s soap box….

Jane Seymour is always touting herself around and trying to sell things. I think Jane Seymour is the tacky one.

I haven’t watched this episode yet with Jane on it, but I will as soon as I can because I’m a HUGE fan of Jane’s & she is my fav. I have however read on some forum’s how the “ladies” of The View dissed her. Can we say “hypocrites?”. I am sure I will definately not care for them after I watch the episode. But, its absolutely ridicuolous & two-faced to say something behind someone’s back & then at “peachy cream” in front of them. Jane is more of a lady & better person than they will ever be if they have those types of attitudes. She is honest, sweet, and amazingly talented. Thats not her fault she was born that way.lol. She dedicated her dance to Walk the Line to two of her closest friends & God Parents to her twins. That is not doing anything to get votes, but honoring those she loves. And I am sure Jane had all CLASS while being on the show. She is better than to stoop to such levels of stupidity & she knows that its ridiculous. The View “ladies” could take a lesson from Jane about being a lady. After watching this to see how they acted towards Jane, I’m pretty sure I won’t be watching the View anymore either. Its such a shame. Hopefully they learn something from it about respect.

One more thing, obviously seeing how “unpopular” this Sherri Shepard is I had to look her up to see what she even looks like.lol. Now that I have….I can understand the stupidity.lol. I don’t see any “lady likeness” there. She will never be on Jane’s level of class, elegance, lady likeness & definately Popularity. She doesn’t seem like one who would be very respectful towards others. Maybe little Sherri is trying to knock others down to make herself feel better & to make her self popular & “funny”. Seems kind of hypocritical don’t you think? Looks like she is trying to boost her career & get her self some votes.lol. Doesn’t seem like she did. lol.

From another older person, (53) I agree Peaches #6, so no, it’s not just you. And I’m glad that you got on that older person’s soapbox for just a few min.

Shame on The View for inviting a guest to be on their show, and then putting them down the day before. Unbelievably insensitive. I agree with the first poster who said The View owed Jane an apology. They didn’t give her one and I think they are all very rude.
