The View October 10th Recap: Maggie Gyllenhaal and Tristan Rogers
Today on this pre-taped, but new, episode of The View, it was the four main hosts again, with no Barbara Walters. The first topic was about married couples who have different political views and whether they can stick it out through the election process. Sherri said that she thinks the sex would be better after the arguments. Elisabeth Hasselbeck said that her friend said she has more arguments with her husband, but there is that push and pull. Joy Behar said she couldn’t do it with a man with different views, adding that she wouldn’t want a man to do to her what George Bush has done to the country. Sherri said she would be depriving herself. Joy said she doesn’t like all the pounding. Whoopi said it depends on the headboard.
Whoopi said that her “better half” is not sure who he is going to vote for, so they have arguments about it. Joy said that there is so much more things to fight about than politics. Elisabeth said that sometimes you argue about things which is not the underlying problem. Elisabeth’s husband Tim pointed out in an argument that he does not like that she leaves grapes in the sink and she has done it for years.
Whoopi said that she and her partner don’t argue, they just mention things, like “There are droppings on the toilet seat and they are not mine.” Joy asked if she was living with an ape and Whoopi said that no, she is living with a man with external plumbing and then they proceeded to discuss men’s habits when urinating, such as shaking. It is not really worth repeating.
The economy is causing people to cut back on everything, including plastic surgery and trips to Whole Foods. Joy said that she will only get some Botox done. Sherri said that organic food is so expensive, so she buys the cheap full-pesticide food. Elisabeth said the pesticide food lasts a lot longer, too.
Whoopi talked (again) about her plan for 25% amnesty for people’s mortgages. Elisabeth said as the holidays are approaching, more people are realizing that they don’t have the money to travel to see their families. Whoopi said that they should make a pool where people can donate their miles to those who need them.
There is a new book about getting a man to marry you. Whoopi read some of the lessons out of the book, like don’t get your friends to pressure him to marry you and don’t talk publicly at someone else’s wedding about how he won’t marry you. Elisabeth read some things out of the book that women should do, like creating dependency by cooking and cleaning and being honest about your expectations. Whoopi read that you should hang out with happily married couples to show that marriage is a good thing. Sherri said that she liked hanging out with Elisabeth and Tim because they are happy together. Elisabeth said that maybe unmarried couples should hang out with unhappily married couples, so it makes your problems seem less.
Maggie Gyllenhaal appeared on the show. Whoopi told her she liked her dress, but said she was hesitant to say that because they would make her wear it. Maggie’s husband has similar politics to her. She thinks it would be interesting way to live if they thought differently, but she is glad they agree. She grew up being told that Ronald Reagan was the boogeyman.
Maggie appeared in The Dark Knight. She was resistant to do the role because she had just had a baby and was used to making tiny movies in which she had more say. The movie has changed her life because it has given her a power to get movies made. She said that The Dark Knight is a movie about ethics and other issues and is not about nothing. Maggie said it is difficult to talk about Heath Ledger’s performance in the film, but it is a testament to his ability that when she watched the film, after 10 minutes she saw him as the Joker.
She just finished Crazy Heart, an independent film. She felt that it was difficult for her daughter to have her away for work and she felt guilty.
Maggie talked about SOYJOY, who is underwriting a fashion show for “four tiny designers” who make clothing out of natural and organic fibers. They showed several of the dresses. She said that one dress is basically made out of tofu. Sherri asked if she could eat it. Maggie’s dress was made out of cruelty-free silk. Whoopi wants to get the dress and wear it with pants.
The next segment was about “5 New Foods.” The “Supermarket Guru” said that people can’t afford to buy a car or pay their mortgage, but they are buying indulgences, like caramels. (?)
* Chief’s Choice Caramels: $4 for four ounces. Rated 93/100
* Budweiser and Clamato: Bill Geddie came out and tried it, saying it was good; Rated 96/100
* My Husband’s Nuts: Whoopi made a joke about the name that got bleeped. Rated 86/100 because it’s not in a resealable bag.
* Old Wisconsin Snack Bites Beef: 90 calories, but has MSG and sodium nitrate; 86/100
* O.N.E. Cashew Juice: Rated 92/100
Tristan Rogers appeared on the show to promote his role on General Hospital: Night Shift. He has known Whoopi for a long time, but have not seen each other in years. He was part of an organization that honored Whoopi and Frank Sinatra on the same night.
Tristan was on General Hospital for 12 years. He left because he was fed up with it. Then he went to unemployment. He came back to do Night Shift because of the story, where his character gets colon cancer. His own father died from colon cancer and that is part of the reason for doing the role. He hopes it encourages people to get tested.
He worked with Elizabeth Taylor when she was on General Hospital for one day. They brought in crates of pink Dom Pérignon champagne. She had him try some and gave him four glasses before the scene even started. The producer got mad at him for “messing around” and Taylor stuck up for him.
The View, Tristan Rogers, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Sherri Shepherd, Elisabeth Hasselbeck, Joy Behar, Whoopi Goldberg, Barbara Walters, Elizabeth Taylor, General Hospital, colon cancer, SOYJOY

I flat out wouldn’t live with someone that supported McCain and Palin. To me it’s not just about different political opinions this election, it’s about different core human values and general philosophy on life.
And that book how to get a man to marry you sounds ridiculous. I respect myself too much to read that kind of crap. You know how to “get a man to marry you?” Like yourself, be yourself, respect yourself and walk away from any person that challenges those three things. Those kind of books breed stupidity and weakness in women. Just my opinion of course.

I kinda zone out after Hot Topics. (dont really like them on Friday because it is all taped)
If it is interesting after HT then let me know and Ill go back and watch.
About “shaking” if the seat is up there usually isnt a problem.
*wink*

“I flat out wouldn’t live with someone that supported McCain and Palin. To me it’s not just about different political opinions this election, it’s about different core human values and general philosophy on life.”
Well said! My in-laws are republicans, and they will not be voting in this election. They find Palin scary and unqualified.

Did anyone else catch this??
Whoopi said that they should make a pool where people can donate their miles to those who need them
She also said in passing that she would donate her miles.
Hasnt Whoopi said in the past that she DOESNT fly?? how does she have miles to donate?

I know that Fridays show are pretaped so I don’t expect great shows. Sometimes I tape and than I can FAST FORWARD through the stupid stuff.
I wonder if Palin read that book. I personally feel that she has put women in politics back a few years. All the winking, ah gee shucks, hockey mom and six pack dads, the sexy updo have made many women cringe.
I know tha Hillary was a bit butchy but atleast I could begin to respect her. She didn’t relay on Blonde barbie gun toteing gee golly whiz persona to get her through.
If I hear gee golly, I am just a normal soccer mom i think that i will puke.
If McCain/Palin can relate to the normal soccer mom and six pack dad, than I am a lipstick wearing pig.

ShannonP and Rainlillie, Amen to what you said…it might not have always been true but the past 15 years or so the republican party uses social issues (womans right to choose, gay rights, etc) to rally their base…if i disagree with someone on issues like that then there is a fundamental difference between us that i could never overcome…if i disagreed with someone on financial issues or foreign policy i could probably agree to disagree

My husband is a conservative and former Republican who voted for Bush TWICE. I voted for Clinton TWICE, followed by Kerry and Gore. My hubby is disgusted with the Republicans and is a now a Conservative/Libetarian.
I didn’t fall in love with him because he’s a Republican, but for his loving and considerate heart. Like most of us, we are seeing who Bush really is,and the downfall of the Republican party. My hubby is not voting for McCain/Palin, but isn’t sure if he’s voting for Obama. He says he may write in a name. As long as it doesn’t go to McCain, I’m fine with that.

Is Tristan Rogers gay? He totally looked like he just walked off the Queer As Folk set today.
October 10th, 2008 at 12:50 pm
HT was so gross today. Bad enough they seem obsessed with talking about pee on toilet seats all the time, now Whoopi talking about that as well as terds. (droppings) @@
Even Joy, who usually brings these sort of topics up looked disgusted when Whoopi mentioned the droppings.
And then she also demonstrated how men ’shake’ and to top it off, declared that if they shake too hard it winds up on her toothbrush.
Being that Whoopi doesn’t brush her teeth much, I doubt that would be a problem for her anyway.
SO gross these woman were today.
Oh and Elisabeth… you already told that stupid grape story before.@@

OMG Dyhanne you are right about palin setting women in politic back at bit.
I saw a cartoon of her in a grinder girl ( ala daivd lettermen ) outfit and was like poeple would they would not dohtis to a hilary or pelosi ( or even mrs mccain or mrs obama) or many male politician. so you might conculed sexism but then i look at her performance at the debates and interviews ( her gee and wink and hocky mom joe six pack stuff the squinting when she say who’s obama) am sure on the stump she is less “folksy” but i listen to the pundit say she is playing to the low informatin voters and the antiintellucal types (not that i think all people who want mmcain are this type or that all that want obama are not am just repeatign the pundits) and i go this is a smart woman playign her role and while it is great for her and mcccain what will it tell young women if she and he win that to get far in politics as a woman you have to play down your brain and tell them your a hockey mom instead.
on another note am a litte over mrs mccain saying obamam needs to sitch shoes with her and that he needs tounderstand what it is like to have a kid /family in miltary.
ok 1. his kids are kids 2. bush’s kids are not and no one thinks he does not understand 3. there are plent of people in gov with/without kid/family in millirty and they all hopefully understand what war means( the real question is would they willing to put themselves and family on the line though they cannot make there family do anything?)
this same issue bohter me when eh said well 3 of 4 have kids in militray. it was not what she said which was a fact but her stight tone that bothered.
I think both sides want what is best with this war and of the soliders

tvguide.com is reporting barack obama has bought airtime from cbs and nbc for a primetime speech…geez i wonder why he’s not buying time from abc…could it be because one of their employees showed such disrespect to his wife, michelle?

Thanks Winnie,
I didn’t see the show, and judging from the recap and comments, sounds like i didn’t miss much.
I never tape the show, as I know I’d never get around to watching it.
Besides, I know I can come here, THANKS to Winnie, and comments and get the scoop.
I can’t speak for others, but my husband and I share SOME different political views, and get along great. We always have. Of course we disagree at times, politically, but it’s never caused a problem with our marriage. (27 years, lived together 28)
This election hasn’t really affected us that much,(with disagreements) perhaps because I was an undecided voter for quite some time.
I think I’ve noted in the past that I come from a pretty diverse political family. So perhaps that has made it easier for me to accept the different political views. ?
I believe that love and respect for each other far outweighs our political differences.

I agree “Failin Pailin” is an insult to most intelligent women. I can’t for the life of me understand who the hell could use her as a role model. Barf!!
All the males I know think she is revolting.
And they have excellent taste in women.
Not just for looks but also intelligence, caring and self-repectful human beings.

Roger: You get the miles by getting a visa or charge card that is sponsored by an airlines. I had a US Air Visa - and I accrued nearly 50,000 miles, only I don’t fly either anymore. It’s only 2 trips worth of miles, but my daughter or my best friend will use those miles, this can be done per the Visa Company, who was Bank of America. I have since cancelled the card, but those miles are still going to be honored by US Air.

I love the show but seriously - STOP WITH THE GROSS COMMENTS!! Why are they constantly discussing bathroom habits, personal grooming, etc.?? I don’t want to hear about anyone’s personal toilet issues. Seriously.
October 11th, 2008 at 7:05 pm
