The View October 18th Recap: Juliette Binoche and Chris Dodd

by Winnie McCarthy

The first “hot” topic on The View was that a woman in New York found a seven foot python in her toilet. Sherri Shepherd talked about how Whoopi Goldberg has a toilet at her house that has a built-in bidet, a dryer, and a heated seat. It is made by Toto.

The next topic was whether the perfect woman exists. Joy Behar said only in the movies, like Juliette Binoche in her latest movie Dan in Real Life, which co-stars Steve Carrell. Juliette is on the show today. (Have you noticed that they are integrating the guests into the hot topics more lately? Maybe to get people to stick around for the interview segments? I think it always seems forced when they do it).

Whoopi’s daughter Alex was in the audience of today’s show. She revealed that Whoopi used to be a big Jerry Springer Show fan, but now she goes to bed by 2:00 in afternoon because of the radio show and this show. Whoopi said that she liked the show because they were people you could never find anywhere else.

French President Sarkozy is splitting from his wife after 11 years of marriage. The divorce may be unconstitutional because French laws prohibit legal action against a sitting president. Barbara said that the wife was with another man in New York and did not go to his inauguration. She said that it did not hurt his campaign at all, but it would here. Sherri said that people who don’t have integrity in the bedroom and cheat on their spouse cannot be expected to run a country. Whoopi said that what they do in their personal life is their business, unless it affects the country. Joy agreed that what happens in their bedroom is none of our business.

Sherri and Elisabeth were wearing “Viva La Cure” t-shirts, available at Saks Fifth Avenue, with proceeds going to breast cancer research.

Bill Richardson said that he made a mistake when he said that homosexuality is a choice and he realizes now that it is not. Joy said that people would not choose that lifestyle and asked, “Who would choose to sleep with Senator Larry Craig?” Elisabeth said that she believes it is a genetic predisposition, but that environmental factors might “click on” that genetic disposition, similar to people who have genetic predispositions to addiction. Barbara said that it is not a lifestyle that you choose. Sherri said was taught growing up that it was a choice, but that a gay friend of hers convinced her that it is not a choice. Whoopi said that is like being Black or being blonde.

Joy said that there are a lot of women married to gay men. Sherri said that she told her friends to tell her that if they think any man she is dating is gay, because she wants to know. Joy said that if a man is going to a gay bar and dancing with other men, then they are gay. Whoopi said that a gay bar is the only place to go dancing. (I thought this was an interesting topic only because of all of the rumors of Star Jones and her husband. It made me wonder if Joy was hinting at them).

Whoopi brought up that Barack Obama is distant cousins with Dick Cheney. Lynne Cheney discovered it while tracing the family ancestry.

Joy announced that it is World Menopause Day and everyone is the audience got moisture wicking pajamas and a Disney MixStix Mp3 player for kids.

Joy also announced that Friday night she is filling in for Larry King on his show.

Juliette Binoche appeared on the show to promote the aforementioned film Dan in Real Life. Barbara told her that is a perception that French men have mistresses more than American men. She said that the French president’s campaign was not hurt by his failing marriage because the French people are used to the kings in the past having their mistresses.

Juliette said that she wanted to do a romantic comedy in America because it was a challenge. She loved the film Pieces of April, which was created by the same writer/director as this film, Peter Hedges. She had to learn how to make pancakes and how to do crosswords for the role.

When her children were younger, it was easier for them to travel with her. Now that her children are 14 and 7, she has to turn down roles because of scheduling problems.

If you want to see the trailer for the film, check out Pop Culture Buzz.

Democratic Presidential candidate Senator Chris Dodd appeared on the show. He wrote a book about his father called Letters from Nuremburg: My Father’s Narrative of a Quest for Justice. His father was one of the prosecutors at the Nazi trials and each day he wrote love letters to his wife, Dodd’s mom.

He said that the number one trampling of the Constitution today is doing away with habeas corpus, as well as the reinstalling of torture, and walking away from the Geneva convention.

They showed a photo of a Nazi and Joy mistakenly said that was Dodd’s father. She looked very embarrassed.

He said that although he is an underdog in the presidential race, he said that anything can happen. He pointed out that John Kerry only had 4% of the vote, was trailing Howard Dean by 20 points and three weeks later he was the nominee. He said that the key to his own success is that he is electable and he can govern if elected.

His wife gave birth to his first child when he was 57 (six years ago) and then had a second child two years ago. He joked that he is the only candidate to get mail from AARP and diaper service companies.

  1. Viva Says:

Did anyone else catch BW say in hot topics “not to get into politics” during one of the conversations? I thought it was odd and telling.

  2. May Says:

I was only able to see the part about the snake in the commode. Another reason to keep the lid shut. A tornado came roaring down the street here in N.W. Florida about that time and a neighbor started yelling, “here it comes..see it?” I ran to the bathroom with my dog till things died down. Cars were overturned across the street and over a block at a department store. No sirens here cause they’re used to hurricanes, not tornados. Four folks in area hurt. Thank goodness it wasn’t worse!

    VIVA-

I also noticed the remark from BW about not getting into politics. I don’t think she should “scold the children” during the LIVE show. If she feels there is a problem…she should discuss it after the show or during “rehearsal”. It is sssssoooooooo unprofessional.

    MAY-

I am glad to hear you are okay. I can not imagine going through such scary weather.

  4. May Says:

Thanx Marilyn and also, Winnie, I appreciate your email of good wishes!

  5. rainlillie Says:

    May,
I’m happy to hear that you’re safe and sound!
I watched the reports on the news. Stay safe!

  6. Stephanie Says:

How awkward was it when BW told Whoopi to ask Chris Dodd a question and she was completely unprepared? She needs to brush up on her interviewing skills….

  7. marilyn Says:

    STEPHANIE-
It was down right embarassing for me, the viewer, to watch. I am not sure this “gig”, is completely comfortable, for Whoopie.Does anyone FEEL the scripted conversation, as much as I do ? It is terrible,IMO.
I am a fan of The View and I hate to see this happening.

  8. rainlillie Says:

It doesn’t seem like Whoopi is cutout for this type of work. She was fine as a guest host, but she’s lacking when it comes to her ability to conduct interviews.

I watch the clips online. I guess everyone can’t have Rosie’s energy. She always kept things moving right along.

  9. trudy Says:

Barbara was especially out of it today, I thought. Not a good thing to watch her either trying to control others or say silly stuff (or both at the same time) and start to wonder to myself, “Hmmm, I wonder if this is a woman who’s afraid of being home alone?” She needs to let go of this show as she sucks the very life out of it every times she’s on. And all this jazz about how people who commit adultery cannot be entrusted with positions of authority just drives me bonkers. Who cares? These preachy arguments are so insipid and naive.

  10. Meredith Says:

It was so offensive when EH said that being gay is like a predisposition such as an addiction. In other words, she does believe it is a choice. With a predisposition to addiction, as long as the person stays away from the offending substance, they won’t be addicted, implying if the person predisposed to being gay just stays away from gay experiences….I was irritated Joy or Whoopie didn’t get into it with her more!

  11. Meredith Says:

“And all this jazz about how people who commit adultery cannot be entrusted with positions of authority just drives me bonkers. Who cares? These preachy arguments are so insipid and naive.”

Trudy, I couldn’t agree with you more. When EH said if a person can’t run his own family, how could he run a country. Could she be any more sexist? And to equate monogomy with values…as if Bush’s horrific immorality denying poor children health insurance and allowing the ongoing slaughter of men, women, and children in the occupation of Iraq is moral?
And thank goodness Sherri is funny to make up for how lacking in knowledge she is about just about everything. How does one live to be her age and get hired to be on a major talk show and possess so little understanding of how the world works?!

  12. Brandon Wolner Says:

#11 Meredith Says: When EH said if a person can’t run his own family, how could he run a country. Could she be any more sexist?

Obviously you missed the joke. Admittedly she kinda botched it…
Michelle Obama said in reference to hillary - “if you can’t run your own house, you can’t run the White House.”

Does that make Michelle Obama a sexist??

  13. Patty Says:

Brandon, it wasn’t a joke or a reference to Michelle’s comment. EH has made that same comment over and over again throughout her stint as a host.

  14. Peaches Says:

    May:
I’m so glad you are okay. Must have been a scary day! Stay safe.

Gosh, I am so sorry that Babs is shushing them about politics. I guess I’d rather she do it on air, though, so we can know the truth as to why they don’t talk about important issues much anymore.

I was annoyed that EH had to poke Christopher Dodd with such a sharp, pointed stick when she asked him about his father. I thought it was appropriate to ask him—the New York Times made sure to talk about it in a recent article about Dodd and his book—but she was extremely rude about it; I was glad he answered back as sharply. After all, it was his father, who is now dead. She is like a Hannity puppet in her techniques, and cruel sometimes.

I was grossly offended by her theories on homosexuality. Why can’t she “choose” to simply reject whatever it is in her religion that demonizes gays? She could “choose” to do that if she wanted to. Sherri was slightly better in that at least she changed her mind after her gay friend called her up to talk about whatever it was that she had sent around (was is concerning gay marriage?). I was astounded to hear her say she hadn’t really read it for herself. I so hope she doesn’t become brainwashed by EH.

  15. Stacee Says:

    Patty said:
“Brandon, it wasn’t a joke or a reference to Michelle’s comment. EH has made that same comment over and over again throughout her stint as a host.”
    —————————–

Patty, of course WE know that because *we actually watch the show* and have heard EH spout that off on numerous occasions - BEFORE Obama’s wife said what she did.

  16. Stacee Says:

I really enjoyed Chris Dodd on the show. He seems to be very personable. The part where Whoopi was unprepared was quite awkward as well as discomfiting. It appeared that she was either asleep or had zoned out.

May, I am glad to hear you are ok!

  17. Ann Says:

Stacee, I agree with you about Whoopee. It was really unprofessional and disrespectful. As a non-American I thought he was articulate and had a clear view of what America has lost since George W came to office - i.e. the esteem of the world.

  18. rainlillie Says:

“It was so offensive when EH said that being gay is like a predisposition such as an gay is like a predisposition such as an addiction. In other words, she does believe it is a choice.”

    ———–
That’s just a stupid thing for her to say. My sister is a lesbian was born a lesbian and will always be a lesbian. When I was a child I knew it, I just didn’t know what it was.

  19. Brandon Wolner Says:

#13 Patty Says: Brandon, it wasn’t a joke or a reference to Michelle’s comment. EH has made that same comment over and over again throughout her stint as a host.

Okay, I have watched the show, admittedly not everyday.

That said, if EH saying it is a sexist remark, does that make Michelle Obama also a sexist?

  20. rainlillie Says:

Mrs. Obama was talking about her ability to take care of her children while campaigning for her husband. She uses the same line in all of her stump speeches. She has stated that she wasn’t talking about Hillary.

  21. rainlillie Says:

I wonder if EH thinks that Rudy could be a good leader, because he cheated on his wife too. Is she aware that Reagan cheated on his first wife Jane Wyman, with Nancy?

  22. Peaches Says:

Rainlillie: I don’t hear pundits too often talk about Rudy’s infidelities. ( I know some right-wingers who are unaware of them, which is astounding to me.) They seem to focus on saying he’s been married 3 times instead. Are they trying to soft-pedal his (and Ronnie’s & Poppy Bush’s) past?
