The View October 19th Recap: Jerry Springer, Donny Deutsch, and Candis Cayne

by Winnie McCarthy

candis-cayne-the-view.jpgThe first topic on The View today was how the Dalai Lama often speaks about ways to be happy. Barbara Walters interviewed him and he said that the purpose of life is to be happy and the way to do that is warmheartedness and compassion. She said that for three days after the interview she followed those principles, but her crew told her that she was boring.

Joy Behar says that sometimes if you are too happy, the other shoe will drop and something bad will happen. Whoopi Goldberg said that you can be happy, but you have to recognize that sometimes you will have not-happy moments. Sherri Shepherd said that sometimes she is so happy she thinks that she will wake up and it will have been a dream.

Barbara spoke with the governor of New Jersey, who thought he was going to die following a traffic accident. He said that it changed his outlook on life, realizing that tomorrow might not come. Elisabeth said that is too bad that it takes an incident like that for people to appreciate life.

Joy said that she had a near-death experience and following that got a divorce and went on to be a stand-up comedian. Barbara then told a joke, which I won’t bother to write out here, but it was actually funny, unlike her previous joke attempts.

There is a middle school in Maine that will be dispensing birth control pills and patches. The kids need parental permission to use the health center, but not specific permission to get the birth control. Elisabeth said that it is a prescription drug that can interfere with other drugs and has side effects, so the parents should need to know. She also said that it may provide a false sense of security for the child, who may not remember to take the pill at the same time everyday. She said that it also puts a bigger wall between parents and children.

Whoopi said that Elisabeth does not know what is going on in middle schools and that many of the kids are sexually active. Elisabeth said that she is young, remember, so she knows middle school. Whoopi said that children need to be educated and the girls have to be taught to say no. Sherri said that it is a band-aid on a bigger problem and children need to be taught about these issues.

Whoopi said that the breast cancer awareness episode, which was preempted, is now available online at The View website.

Jerry Springer appeared on the show to talk about The Jerry Springer Show. His show is in the 17th season. He apologized for the show just in case it is his last day to live.

Sherri pointed out how it seems like every woman who fights on the show has the same black dress which comes off in one fell-swoop. He joked that it is available at Saks.

He said that they get thousands of calls from people who want to be on the show. He said that as long as the topics are truthful and outrageous, they will put it on. He said that if they get a call about a heart-warming story, they send it somewhere else. Barbara said that he could send the stories to them. Jerry joked that there is never any fighting on this show. Barbara said, “Not this year!”

Jerry said that he has never put his foot down and said that a topic was too much to air. The point of the show is to be outrageous and for the most part he likes all the guests. He is very happy with his life and is, like Joy said, waiting for the other shoe to drop.

He appeared on Dancing with the Stars and danced the waltz for his daughter for her wedding. He was the mayor of Cincinnati and he has never dismissed the idea of going back into politics. Elisabeth asked him if he has a candidate yet for president. Jerry said that she was not going to be happy about it. Elisabeth joked that she does not come here expecting to be happy. He said that he feels bad for her. He said that he likes Hillary Clinton for president.

At the end of the segment, Barbara started reading off the teleprompter about his show and Jerry said that he loved that Barbara was promoting The Jerry Springer Show and went and sat in the audience to watch her in action. She then went off-prompter and said that if you have nothing better to do, you might want to watch it.

Donny Deutsch, from The Big Idea, appeared on the show. They talked about Ann Coulter’s comment on his show that Jewish people need to be perfected. He said that the irony is that his show is about positivity and people who have done great things.

With him on the show was Kerry O’Brien, a mother who invented a product called “Takeouts: the better boob job.” They are made of silicone and will add a cup size. She also made underwear called “commando” that have no seems and no elastic. For more information on her products, check out this link.

Donny said that anytime you are annoyed by something that can lead to a product idea. He said that the key is to do what you love and not be afraid to fail. He said that you don’t need experience in the area of your product idea and that inexperience may be a benefit because you will have fresher ideas.

Candis Cayne appeared on the show to promote the television show Dirty Sexy Money. Candis is the first transgendered person to appear on a prime time television show. Her character is also transgendered.

She has a twin brother who is married with children. Candis said that she was six or seven when she realized that she wanted to be more like her female cousin. In early 20s she met someone who was transgendered and that is when she knew she was meant to be female. She has had surgery to become a woman.

Her parents were very supportive, as was her brother. Everyone in her life has been very positive about her experience. Her parents were more excited for her to be on The View, than when she got the part on the Dirty Sexy Money.

She does not know if the producers of Dirty Sexy Money intended to cast a real transgendered woman for the role because she never knew who else was auditioning for the part. Candis thinks that she is a role model for others. She has a boyfriend named Marco and is a stepmother to his six-year-old daughter. Candis has not really talked with her about the fact that she is transgendered.

  1. May Says:

Saw some of today’s show. Liked the part with Jerry Springer, though I detest his show, I like him. He is witty and used to be a stand-up commedian in Cincy where he also used to be mayor. I lived there at the time and we thought he was great till he got caught by giving a CHECK to a prostitute! He eventually was forgiven by the locals and I guess by his wife at the time.
Is the picture at the top you, Winnie? If so you are a real beauty. Thanx to all who wished me safety yesterday. We’re all trying to dry out here today after ten inches of rain.

  2. rainlillie Says:

    Hey May,

I think that photo is of Candis Cayne, from the show “Dirty Sexy Money.” We have rain coming our way today, but nothing as bad as what you had yesterday.

I’m also not a fan of Jerry’s show, but I enjoyed him on America’s Got Talent.

  3. rainlillie Says:

Did anyone else see Sherri on 30 Rock? She was really funny. The show is starting to grow on me. My husband and son loves it.

  4. May Says:

Ha! Rainlillie…thanx for the info. Shows you how much I watch the new shows!

  5. Lajet Says:

I’m not sure what Elisabeth was so upset about (what’s new.) She didn’t want anyone giving her kid birth control pills without her knowledge - a position I can understand and respect. But something which the Maine program allows for. No one is required to allow the health center in question to have access to anyone’s child. It’s an available option, not mandatory enrollment. Her argument seemed to be that parents should have more control and I don’t want anyone giving my kid birth control pills, so we shouldn’t provide an option for medical care for anyone’s kids (regardless of whether other parents want or exercise that control).

I get so tired of her. There are thoughtsful people who hold similar opinions to her. But she bases her opinions on twisted facts that don’t match reality.

  6. Sarah Says:

Lajet: Great post. It also bugs me that she has such strong opinions about a situation she has yet to encounter. It’s easy to say “This is what I would do when my child is a teenager” when your child is 2 years old. Get back to me when you’ve actually raised a child to adulthood Elisabeth.

Until then I wish she would spare us all the lectures on how children should be raised.

  7. Elsie Says:

Replace her with Laura Ingraham or Ann Coulter, I say! Ha, that will be the day! If they are going to have a right-winger on the show, at least they should have someone who brings in controversy not annoyance. I don’t hate EH, but I am finding her irritating lately. If she’s all about raising children, then she should do FULL-TIME. Then she could really make sure her precious Grace doesn’t get BC pills.

  8. rainlillie Says:

Everyone here knows how I feel about EH, but this is going to come as a shocker…I actually agree with her about the birth control pills.
Although the “kids need parental permission to use the health center,” We all know how some kids forge their parents signatures on permission slips and notes to get out of school early.

I would like to be notified if my child was going to take any medication, regardless of what kind it is. I’ve never been a fan of birth control pills, I know other women who have used them and they have side-effects.

When my children are old enough to have those type of relationships, I hope that they’ll be able to come to me and ask questions.

As of now both my husband and I have a very open relationship with our children. I know in some states underage girls can have abortions without parental notification, I’m also against that.

I know there are cases where the child may come from an abused home, but that’s when the courts should get involved and determine the best approach.

  9. Ann Says:

We are all gobsmacked at kids going on the pill at 11 and would prefer it not to happen, but this program, as Barbara stressed, was with parental permission. This is the problem with EH, I can understand her alarm at this story, she is as upset by the thought of it as I am, but she chose to completely ignore the fact that the parents give permission and went on her shrewish way of accusing the medical centre of doing this without the parent’s permission. Elsie, I totally agree with your point, it’s not that EH brings controversy, it is that she brings annoyance.

  10. Brandon Wolner Says:

What parent would not sign a permission slip for their child to obtain medical attention at school. Maybe a bloody nose from sports, an accident in shop class or something more serious. The school could then give out birth control to little girls WITHOUT the permission of her parents and quite possibly without the parents even knowing. Considering the job public schools are doing educating kids they should stay out of moral issues.

“King Middle School students need parental permission to access the school’s health center, but treatment is confidential by law, which allows the students to decide whether to inform their parents about services they receive.”
    http://www.boston.com/news/local/articles/2007/10/20/bishop_in_maine_shocked_by_policy/

“Although students must have written parental permission to be treated at Portland’s school-based health centers, state law allows them to seek confidential health care and to decide whether to inform their parents about the services they receive, Belanger said.”

  11. rainlillie Says:

    Ann,
I don’t watch the show, I was only going by the recaps. I still think if a child is determined to use the center they will get a friend to forge their parents signature.

  12. rainlillie Says:

Why should children have access to birth contol pills? Even if the parent is okay with it, it’s bad judgment IMO.

When I was that age I thought holding hands with a boy was a big deal, now you have young girls on the pill…Unreal!
Most middle school students are 12 and 13 that’s too young to be involved in a sexual relationship.

First of all their not emotionally ready to handle the consequences of those types of relationships.

We have adult women who will sleep with a guy and then fall apart when he doesn’t call her afterwards. Imagine how that would be for a child.

  13. Stacee Says:

I don’t think kids should be having sex at such an early age either. But the fact of the matter is SOME ARE.

The school’s clinic has been offering condoms and testing for pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases since 2000. It also offers dental, mental health and basic care. It’s like a dr.’s office. The just expanded it to include oral contraceptive. The dr will examine and nurse practitioner prescribes the birth control pill. You must sign a waver to have access to the clinic.

I think this is a fantastic idea. While I definitely think parents should be there to provide and educate the child, many times kids don’t feel comfortable going to their mom or dad. How many kids squirm when parents have the sex talk with their kids? How many PARENTS squirm? How many times have we learned something about our children through someone else? Sometimes it’s easier to talk with a teacher, policeman or a doctor/nurse. If my child did not feel comfortable discussing certain things with me, I’d first feel disappointed. But then I’d feel relieved they could talk to someone.

I think the concern of forging the waver is valid. I think if any parent feels suspicious or concerned that their child would/could/ or will access without their permission should probably speak to the principal directly and/or write a letter stating they do not want their child in the clinic. I know that’s what I would do.

  14. rainlillie Says:

I wouldn’t mind this so much if the children were 16 or 17, but 12 and 13? What about the side-effects of using birth control pills. They’re bodies are still developing at that age, I really think it’s a bad idea. It reminds of parents who say we’ll they’re going to drink anyway, we may as well let them drink at home.

I have children in my family who are that age, and maybe I have a little more faith in them, that they’ll have enough self respect and be wise enough to not engage in that type of behavior.

Why not educate the parents and the children about STD’S. Studies have shown the earlier you have sex, the more likely you are to develop cervical cancer.

  15. rainlillie Says:

“Of 134 students who visited King’s health center during the 2006-07 school year, five students, or 4 percent, reported having sexual intercourse, said Amanda Rowe, lead nurse in Portland’s school health centers.”

Which means the majority aren’t having sex. It also said the students are ages 11-13.

  16. Sarah Says:

I’m suspicious of the 4 percent number simply because we don’t actually know if the students are telling the truth or not. Tons of people in high school tell the adults around them they’re not having sex when they are.

I don’t necessarily have a problem with EH opinion on this subject - I have mixed feelings about it myself - my problem is the way that she thinks she knows exactly how she would handle a teenager when she’s not even close to that stage yet. She acts like she’s the childcare expert when she’s only been a mother for 2 years.

  17. rainlillie Says:

“Tons of people in high school”

This clinic is for middle school children. Ages 11 TO 13. I do agree that the numbers may be wrong, because you’re right not every child is going to be forthcoming on such matters.

“she thinks she knows exactly how she would handle a teenager when she’s not even close to that stage yet. She acts like she’s the childcare expert when she’s only been a mother for 2 years.”

I totally agree with you on that too.

  18. Brandon Wolner Says:

Something that doesn’t get much attention, the odds are it’s not going to be a 11 year old boy and 11 year old girl. The boy will most likely be a few years older.

  19. Ann Says:

I’m kind of despairing of the way the world is going. I’m a liberal, democrat and am all for free speech and freedom of expression but I think we are failing today’s children. As mentioned many times I am an atheist, but if there is a soddom and gomorrah (i.e. end of the world) it must be coming pretty soon. The subject we have been discussing really depresses me and makes me think we have failed. I can trace it back to Madonna 20 years ago, insisting that everyone express their sexuality and strength as women. This has backfired badly, at the time Madonna was a millionaire, 25 year old woman. This has had a trick down effect via the Spice Girls, Britney Spears etc. and has been disastrous for young kids.

Excellent, Excellent points! I’m not a prude by any means, but the thought of 11 year old children engaging in sex, is very disturbing to me. I’m also liberal in my views, but I too think back to when I was that age, and it’s just so scary now days.

  21. Peaches Says:

This is the perfect topic for them to tackle a little more frequently, and in-depth, so I keep thinking if they cut down the no. of hot topics, and the panelists did their homework (more than Googling partisan websites and pundits), The View could really do something good for home viewers. (How many days a week do we need to hear another Britney Spears saga? They could condense everything about her and mention it once a week or couple of weeks.)It would be a nice change from the rat-a-tat-tat crossfire soundbytes on the cable “news” shows, where no one really learns anything about the issue except where it falls in the red-state or blue-state camp and where so much misinformation gets spread.
I am losing so much interest in this show with how they have so often toned it down, it’s becoming increasingly demoralizing to watch. I repeated myself here from another thread…. Sorry.

  22. Sandy Says:

I agree with E.h., and the others who think this is not a wise idea at all, for all the reasons previously stated. I do have a teen,(17) and I know exactly what goes on in middle school, as it was only a few years ago that my daughter attended.
Birth control pills, and any type of medication simply should not be given to any minor without the parent’s knowledge and or consent. That’s my opinion.
I’ve discussed sex and birth control with my daughters, (I have one who is married as well), and I am positive that they know and believe that they can come to me should the need arise. To me this is one of the responsibilities of being a parent.
I also am aware that there are parents out there who do not, for various reasons, talk about this subject with their children, and teens who do not go to their parents. I still believe it is not at all wise to provide birth control pills to teens, mostly for medical reasons. A parent HAS to have knowledge of this.
Yes it is very scary now a days. You wouldn’t believe some of the things my 17 year old tells me, and has been telling me since middle school. Not only with sex, drugs as well, and peer pressure. It’s a very hard time to be a parent, and a teen for that matter.

  23. rainlillie Says:

“You wouldn’t believe some of the things my 17 year old tells me, and has been telling me since middle school. Not only with sex, drugs as well, and peer pressure. It’s a very hard time to be a parent, and a teen for that matter.”

I’m also the mother of a teenager. I talk to him all the time about sex , drugs and all of the temptations that are out there. He understands that my husband and I are always available if he ever has questions.

Things have changed a lot since I was growing up in the late 80’s. Recently we were at our community fiesta and a few teenage girls approached me and told me how cute my son is. I was taken aback, when I was that age I wouldn’t have dreamed of going up to a boys mother and expressing an interest in him. My response was yes he is, thank you. LOL! Needless to say they followed him and his friends around most of the evening, until they got tired of being ignored.

  24. rainlillie Says:

I agree it would be nice if they didn’t gloss over important issues. I feel sorry for Britney, but enough is enough.

  25. Viva Says:

The fact of the matter is a lot of parents aren’t doing their jobs. It’s great that you talked about sex with your kids Sandy and everyone else here sounds like good parents. But a lot of parents are failing. That is the reality. This is clearly necessary or they wouldn’t have done it. I’d be interested in the teen pregnancy statistics for that community.
Also, Brandon brought up an excellent point about the boys being older. That is most often the case when young girls are having sex early. Clearly the birth control pills are a “band-aid” solution because these girls need a lot more education than what they are getting. And I don’t mean just sex ed. Another question I have about the community - Does anyone know if the majority of the families are in a high or low socio-economic status? Not to start a rich/poor debate about having sex early but it can be a contributing factor.

  26. Marie Doxey Says:

You are claiming that Candis Cayne is transgendered. You also claim she has had surgery to become a woman. Last time I checked, a woman doesn’t have a penis and testicles. Candis Cayne has only had breast implants and takes hormones for HIS voice.
Shame on you for not being more knowledgeable about your guests and especially for misrepresenting a gender.
Candis Cayne is a fraud. Check into it. I know this first hand. Candis Cayne is still a male. Perhaps you should call her agents Carole Antouri and Nikki Weiss.

The whole Candis misrepresentation is sick and wrong. You owe your viewers the truth!

    Marie

  27. rainlillie Says:

    Marie Doxey ,
Candis Cayne said she had surgery to become a woman. I don’t think the view is an investigated type show, why would the producers look into a guests background?

  28. jjb Says:

I am new here on this blog. Can someone please tell me what is IMO?

  29. jjb Says:

    What is an IMO?

  30. Peaches Says:

    in my opinion
