The View October 22nd Recap: Ricki Lake and The Wiggles

by Winnie McCarthy

ricki-lake.jpgWhoopi Goldberg did not appear on The View today because she has a “little cold” and was worried about getting Elisabeth Hasselbeck sick.

Tomorrow is Elisabeth’s last day before her “temporary” move to Arizona (She’ll be back January 6th) for her maternity leave. She has been packing all week and is not nervous about the move, but is worried about “birthing on an airplane.” Barbara Walters said the Elisabeth should give birth on the show tomorrow. Elisabeth said that Barbara could be her doula and she could have Ricki Lake set up a birthing tub on the set.

This morning there was a roach in the make-up room. Sherri Shepherd said it was the size of a cat. Apparently all the ladies starting screaming and running around. Elisabeth was going to stomp it, but Joy told her to have a man do it because that is their job, in addition to taking out the garbage. Elisabeth was shocked that Joy would say such a thing. A female producer ended up killing it.

Sherri spoke at a March of Dimes event over the weekend and she got to borrow $33,000 of jewelry to wear to the event. She put the jewelry in her underwear at the airport so that it would not get stolen. She slept with at the hotel. Barbara borrowed diamond earrings one time and lost one when she was trying on hats. She has never borrowed jewelry again.

There was a GOP debate last night and it was pretty contentious, according to Barbara. She said that when they were not attacking each other, they were attacking Hillary Clinton. Clinton, along with the other New York Senator, wants $1 million of tax payer money to have a museum to commerate Woodstock. John McCain called Woodstock a “cultural and pharmaceutical event,” which he did not attend because he was “tied-up” at the time…in a prisoner of war camp. Joy said that the Republicans want even more money to make a “bridge to nowhere” in Alaska. Elisabeth acknowledged that the Republicans have been overspending in the last four years and that they are trying to correct that.

Sherri didn’t know what Woodstock was before today. I realize that she is not old enough to have gone to it, but how could she have missed every cultural reference to the event throughout her entire life?

Sherri said that she wanted to tape the birth of her son, because she would forget later what went on. He was premature, though, so she didn’t get a chance to do so. She just wanted it for herself, not to show anyone. Joy said that in the era of You Tube it could be on there “Joy Behar’s Vagina!” Elisabeth said that she would rather just have a nice memory of it, rather than a tape. She would not want to a water birth and would rather be in a hospital, all hooked up to machines.

Bill Maher’s HBO show is live and on Friday he was heckled by the audience and he had to yell for security to take someone out. Maher ran up to where the man was and yelled at him to get out. Bill later yelled at another audience member that she was supposed to listen and not speak. Barbara said that if that happened to her, she would go to commercial. Joy pointed out that Maher’s show is on HBO, so there are no commercials. Sherri said that she would love to see Barbara kick an audience member out. Joy said that when someone speaks out like Maher does he becomes a target and he was probably scared.

Sherri Shepherd wants to get plastic surgery to get a bigger booty. She is nervous that if she sits down on the silicone implants, her butt may deflate. Elisabeth said that she should just get jeans with built in booty. Joy joked that then Sherri would have to take off her wig and her booty when she got home.

Everyone in the audience got a Microsoft Streets and Trips GPS navigator and they discussed how it is always female voice on the navigators. Joy said that Steve is having an affair with the woman in their GPS. Barbara says that she just wants hers to shut up sometimes. Elisabeth said that she likes the sound of her navigator’s voice and she is lost without it. Barbara said that she should have the GPS voice in her delivery room telling her to push. Elisabeth said that she wants Barbara to do it, so Barbara said that she would record her soothing voice encouraging Elisabeth to push.

Ricki Lake appeared on the show to promote Matters of Life & Dating. In the film she plays a woman with breast cancer dealing with the dating world. She is recently single herself, so she could relate to the character.

Ricki also talked about her documentary, The Business of Being Born, which follows her during her pregnancy and delivery, which took place at home. The point of the movie is that women can have be empowered and choose the right delivery option for herself. She has two children, age 10 and 6. Her first son was born in the hospital, her second was born at home. Ricki acts as a doula now, who provides women support during labor.

She said that OK! Magazine was incorrect when they put in her cover story that she was “lonely” or desperately looking for a man. To maintain her new smaller size, she works out with a trainer. She lost 35 pounds in nine weeks using Fresh Dining and exercise.

Her film The Business of Being Born will be in theaters in January, but for more information about grassroots screenings of the film visit the film’s website here.

The children’s singing group The Wiggles appeared on the show. They are doing a 23 city tour in the United States. Greg, the former Wiggle, is doing better since he has been resting more after quitting the group.

The Wiggles then performed a medley of songs for the audience, which included several children. Elisabeth’s daughter, Grace Hasselbeck, was among the kids in attendance (see below).

I tried to watch the GOP debate, but it was so boring I had to turn it off. Before they were trying to prove who is more pro-torture, this time they were trying to prove who is more conservative, and who is more religious.

It’s so funny to have men who have been married more than once and one even married to one his family members come out against gay marriage.

They have yet to tell the American people how gay marriage can hurt heterosexual marriages.

The only thing the GOP candidates can do is bash Hilliary with old 90’s talking points. Come on guys…Get some new lines.

  2. May Says:

Today’s show was boring as all get out. Bawa was keeping the lid on as usual. EH was getting much attention since she’s leaving tomorrow (for too short a time)..lots of talk about having babies. Rickie Lake looked good since loosing weight (35 lbs in 9 wks).Maybe I need a personal trainer like I think she had. Can’t wait till tomorrow’s show is done and EH is swept out the door. NEXT I say.
Rainlillie, I agree that the gop has nothing to offer but bad comments about Hilliary. Wait it’ll get much worse. Hope she hangs in there and shows ‘em female power is for real!

  3. Viva Says:

BW said she’d go to commercial because of a heckler but The View wouldn’t go to commercial when two of the employees were fighting on air.

BW and EH really bother me. Joy was easier to enjoy with Rosie. And Sherri… What the hell happened? As a guest host she was awesome and now she took a bottle of “I’m going to be crap now” pills. Thoroughly unenjoyable show today and not at all interesting -as per the usual view lately.

  4. Sandy Says:

I haven’t had the opportunity to watch the view for a week or so, but did today. I have to agree it was kind of Blah.

  5. May Says:

Viva, I agree about Sherri. She was funny as a guest but all she can seem to do now is gaze at EH adoringly and come out with stupido remarks. She talks about wishing she had a “big butt”. Yeah…that’s ALL she needs-not!

  6. Stephanie Says:

There were a few references to last year by BW. Its annoying how she wants to say things but not openly, like you cant ever name names. The show was…..well…..the way it is now.

  7. Lajet Says:

PRIOR: Elisabeth acknowledged that the Republicans have been overspending in the last four years and that they are trying to correct that.

Sheesh, and I read the first part and thougth - Finally EH acknowledges that the Rub-cans aren’t perfect, only to find it it was a set up for, NOw the rub-cans get it but the dem-cats don’t. Sheeeeeshsh. Did EH provide any evidence besides not funding one, small dem-cat project.

  8. rainlillie Says:

    May,
I may just watch the show again once EH is gone. I wonder if Sherri is going to try and be another EH…I hope not.

I think the hot topics are discussed before the show begins, so I’m not sure why Sherri isn’t more informed.

I can’t believe that today was the first time that she’s heard of Woodstock. I’m not old enough to remember it, but it was a historic event. She really should read a little more. They even have books on tape, for people who don’t have time to read.

  9. Real Says:

Sherri is pathetic and has to go. I’d hate to be around when she finds out that Lincoln and JFK were assassinated.

  10. Ann Says:

I wonder if they’ll replace Sherri and Whoopi. I don’t think either of them have worked out. I still wish they’d gotten Kathy Griffin to shake things up and ruffle a few feathers.

  11. Viva Says:

    Real - LOL!
    Ann - I absolutely agree!
May - I thought it was just my imagination, but you noticed too. The adoring gazes between Sherri and EH - What’s that about? Sometimes they come out arm in arm. “Look at us everyone, we got rid of the problem. See we all get along without Rosie.”
    Drives me nuts.

  12. rainlillie Says:

    Ann,

I think that’s why Sherri and Whoopi were hired, because they’re both team players. I seriously doubt that they’ll let either one of them go.

  13. Real Says:

Sherri and EH looping arms- either safety in numbers for avoiding getting fired or they share a brain. Jury is still out, but a verdict may come in on Weds- first day without EH. If you see Sherri slump forward and fall into one of the View mugs, you’ll know the answer.

  14. Real Says:

Whoopi- she has the be one of the most boring people on the planet. Maybe she should give up her morning radio shift here in NYC, and concentrate on doing a NATIONAL TELEVISION SHOW. She always looks like my co-workers mid-afternoon when it’s time for a Starbucks run.

  15. Real Says:

    self- edit: “to be”

  16. Real Says:

Why does Grace always have bows in her hair and that lopsided hairdo? I pray the second child is a boy, because EH doesn’t seem to be able to devote any time to doing this child’s hair.

  17. Random Musings Says:

I watched today for the first time in quite a while. I have been depending on these recaps to see what is going on. I will watch once EH is gone. I didn’t like her when she first came on, then learned to put up with her but lately she drives me ’round the bend. I wasn’t bored today…but I miss the wit that Meredith provided. I miss her more than any cohost who has left. She and Lisa Ling brought intelligence to the discussions.

Real….EH explained that Daddy has dressed Grace and done her hair.

  18. Viva Says:

#13 Real “Sherri and EH looping arms- either safety in numbers for avoiding getting fired or they share a brain. Jury is still out, but a verdict may come in on Weds- first day without EH. If you see Sherri slump forward and fall into one of the View mugs, you’ll know the answer.”
    You crack me up! LOL

  19. Brandon Wolner Says:

#1 Rainlillie Says - “The only thing the GOP candidates can do is bash Hilliary with old 90’s talking points. Come on guys…Get some new lines.”

I know it seems like the same old talking points from the 90s but the truth is it is a brand new chinese contribution scandal. First with Hsu and now the Chinatown busboys contributing $1000 at a shot.

  20. Elena Says:

REAL: EH said that Tim dressed Grace today and he did up her hair…just fyi

  21. Meredith Says:

Sherri has to be one of the most uneducated individuals on television. She never ceases to amaze me with how many things she is completely ignorant about. And I’m not talking rocket science here. She admitted before this show all she read were the tabloids. And this is the best the View can find? Meredith and Lisa were so sharp. Sherri is an embarrassment. I think that’s why she and EH get along so well, because they bolster each other. EH can feel smart around Sherri and Sherri can feel more likeable than EH. They are each half a brain.

  22. kc Says:

Rosie O’Donnell will introduce producer Ricki Lake and director Abby Epstein for a Q&A following the screening of “The Business of Being Born” tonight. Guess Ricki didn’t mention this on The View…

    http://www.nyjournalnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20071022/NEWS03/710220404

  23. Elsie Says:

Sherri didn’t know if the Earth was flat or round, remember? She claimed that because she was too busy thinking about how she was going to feed her kid. Don’t we all Sherri? But not all of us have a $2mil. contract w/ABC. Hey, I’m younger than her and I’ve heard about Woodstock, AND The Beatles. ;)

  24. Real Says:

To #17 and #20- Thanks for the clarification. I see Tim is as good of a hairstylist as he is a quarterback…..

  25. Real Says:

The funny thing about Sherri is that I never pegged her for being so bright, as much as I had no idea that she was so dumb. Yes, Meredith and Lisa were truly intelligent, and add Star to the mix. Joy is smart with quick humor, but she has been holding back.

Never in a million years did I ever imagine that I would see BW on a stage with women talking about booty implants and capturing cockroaches or “doing” the husband of the Speaker of the House. How is this educating anyone?

TO VIVA: :) Thank you….we can only hope that this show gets better! :)

  26. Julie Says:

“Sherri has to be one of the most uneducated individuals on television. She never ceases to amaze me with how many things she is completely ignorant about.”

Yep, and what gets me is that she often acts proud of her ignorance when she should be ashamed. They have meetings before the show to discuss what the hot topics will be, so you’d think she’d get filled in during those. She’s also so unfunny. You can tell when she’s trying to set up a joke, but they never go well.

  27. rainlillie Says:

    kc,
That’s weird, you’d think Rickie would have said something about the screening. It’s so immature not to mention Rosie’s name on the View. As if people won’t remember her contributions to the show.

  28. rainlillie Says:

“….EH explained that Daddy has dressed Grace and done her hair.”

She looks cute. You see my daughters hair when my hubby attempted to do it LOL!

  29. rainlillie Says:

I wanted to add, you should see the outfits he puts together when he dresses her. I’m talking crimes of fashion. That’s why I’m the one who dresses her the majority of the time. I know fashion and he knows music and computers.

  30. Ann Says:

Rainlilie - they may very well have chosen Whoopi & Sherri so that they wouldn’t be controversial but it is going to be the death of the show. You can see how frustrated and annoyed Joy is with everything. Barbara has totally lost it, she messes everything up (eg. the intro to John McCain’s funny comment at the debate - which totally exasperated Joy) and interrupts and annoys the other co-hosts.

  31. rainlillie Says:

“Rainlilie - they may very well have chosen Whoopi & Sherri so that they wouldn’t be controversial but it is going to be the death of the show.”

    I agree.

  32. Peaches Says:

“There were a few references to last year by BW.”

Yes … it seems a day doesn’t pass that they don’t take the opportunity to take a potshot at last year (i.e., Rosie) & how this year is different.

“She admitted before this show all she read were the tabloids. ”

But someone mentioned a while back that she claims she now reads the New York Times AND the Wash. Post every day. I was dubious but tried to keep an open mind. I think the bar is so low, I have actually been happy with her for the simple reason that she sits there & at least looks like she is listening rather than blurting out talking points she got from Sean Hannity. I heard her parrot a GOP one-liner a time or two, but not as often as I had feared. I think her days are numbered. She just doesn’t bring much to the table.

Re: What kc posted — yes, it’s maddening that Rosie’s name will not be mentioned. Rosie said on her blog that she & Ricki had dinner around the day Ricki was on The View. Has Bawa issued a fatwa on anything Rosie?

“Finally EH acknowledges that the Rub-cans aren’t perfect, only to find it it was a set up for, NOw the rub-cans get it but the dem-cats don’t. Sheeeeeshsh.”

Yes, EH has pulled this one before; it’s often some ditty about Hilary … it ends up making the Dems look bad.

“they may very well have chosen Whoopi & Sherri so that they wouldn’t be controversial”

Yes, absolutely, positively, without a doubt. The whole show is trending rightward, too. Bill O’Really? will be on to celebrate Whoopi’s birthday? When will Rush and Hannity be on? Fox Lite is what it’s become.

  33. rainlillie Says:

“The whole show is trending rightward, too. Bill O’Really? will be on to celebrate Whoopi’s birthday? When will Rush and Hannity be on? Fox Lite is what it’s become.”

Wouldn’t it be great if they asked Bill about his sexual harassment suit. Rosie said that she and Joy were told by TPTB that they couldn’t talk about his suit on the air.
