The View October 29th Recap
Barbara Walters was in Los Angeles last week doing interviews for her “10 most fascinating people” special on in December. She also did an interview with Terri Irwin, the wife of the late Steve Irwin, which will air on 20/20.
{There was then a spider on the table and Sherri freaked out a little and she and Barbara got up from the table. Whoopi used her cards to put hand the spider to an off-camera person.}
Barbara went to The Ivy for lunch after the 20/20 interview. She was surprised by all of the paparazzi there, but was gracious to all of them. She was then on a “tabloid show,” which I am assuming was the TMZ show, which had a segment about her with footage from that day. She said that they were very mean to her, showing clips of bad interviews that she has done, etc.
Barbara spoke with Elisabeth Hasselbeck this morning. Elisabeth is having trouble adjusting to life in Arizona and Grace is not sleeping.
Sherri Shepherd came to the studio at 5:00 a.m. because she forgot a DVD she needed to watch for the show. She was not wearing a wig or bra, and was in pajamas. The guard did not want to let her in. Whoopi joked that she should have just shown him her boobs and he would have recognized her. Sherri said that no one wants to see her boobs without a bra.
The next topic was a lame discussion about whether people are uncomfortable with the word “vagina.” After about a three minute back-and-forth about the various names for vagina that the hosts use, Joy said, “I believe we exhausted this topic.” Ya think?
Britney Spears mom, Lynne Spears, is going to write a book about mother and parenting in the pop culture world. Joy said that certain actions by adolescents, such as promiscuity and drug use, that are under the control of the parents and they should be keeping a closer eye on what their children are doing. Barbara said that she tried to raise her daughter well, but she could not control all of her decisions. Whoopi said that she was raised by a smart woman, but still used a lot of drugs and did other things she should not have done. She said that not all parents are aware when that is going on.
Joy said that Barbara never gets a cold because she is a robot. That is also why she does not pee.
Stephen Colbert is getting a lot of attention because he could get 13% of the vite against Clinton and Giuliani in the presidential election. Joy said that about five years ago she ran for the Senate as a joke. Her slogan was “Make the switch. Vote for the bitch.” Joy thinks that people saying that are going to vote for Colbert is their way to get back at the leadership that is not listening to the people. She said that people want the U.S. out of Iraq but they aren’t listening and now they are “beating the drum” about Iran.
Kaley Cuoco appeared to promote her television show The Big Bang Theory. In the show she appears with four geeky boys and her character is not too bright. Her character helps the geeks to be in the real world and the geeks are teaching her things too. (I haven’t seen the show, but it sounds like a sitcom version of Beauty and the Geek).
In real life, Kaley is 22 and she has a boyfriend who is a shoe designer for a surf company. She has dated actors in the past, but will not do it again because does she does not like a man who looks in the mirror more than she does.
She said that she does not know enough about politics to comment on who she thinks would be good for President. She has been acting since she was 8. She said that the reason she is not in the tabloids because she is not famous enough. She also likes being at home and doesn’t like the party environment. She also has a lot of friends who are not in the business.
In her continuing effort to quit smoking, Whoopi aired her latest segment in her “Whoopi’s Kickin’ Butts” campaign. Dr. Steven Lamm appeared on the show to tell her about all the different stop smoking helpers. Dr. Lamm said that you have to want to quit yourself. He said that nicotine is as addictive as heroin. Here are some of the various options available to those who want to quit:
Nicotine replacement: patches, gum, lozenges, spray inhaler
Wellbutrin or Zyban: tricks brain into thinking it has nicotine
Chantix: 30-40% effective, can cause depression and can be expensive
Take vitamins and anti-oxidants
Laser therapy, hypnosis, and other similar things may work for a few people, but do not have wide-spread success.
Whoopi has chosen December 15th as her stop smoking date. She is considering going on the Wellbutrin to help her to quit.

“Joy said that certain actions by adolescents, such as promiscuity and drug use, that are under the control of the parents and they should be keeping a closer eye on what their children are doing.”
To a point I think Joy is right. The Columbine teens had ammunition and weapons in their bedrooms, I’m not sure how the parents could live in the same home with them and be unaware of the weapons.
I went to a Catholic school and some of the girls at the school would change their clothes as soon as school let out. They would take off their uniforms and put on very inappropriate clothing.
I’m sure the parents were unaware of this. Most of the girls were heavily involved with the church. Those same girls would drink, smoke and sleep around more than the other girls who had a little more freedom.
At least two of the three that I’m talking about became teenage parents. Parents can’t watch a child 24 hours a day. The only thing we can do is to try to instill values in them and hope that they’ll carry those values with them whenever they walk out the door.

Today’s show was slow and the yak-yak Bawa went on and on about was dull. She announced she was so glad to “be back”. Didn’t know she left so she wasn’t missed (by me). She got phone call from EH who seems unhappy in Arizona..boo hoo! Guess that means she’ll come scampering right on back first chance she gets. The spider was handed to none other than Bill Gettes (co-producer of show).

“Guess that means she’ll come scampering right on back first chance she gets.”
May,
I hope EH doesn’t come back any time soon. She seems like the type who can’t stand to be out of the spotlight.
I wouldn’t be surprised if she doesn’t have a camera crew in the room with her when she gives birth… BW would probably would go along with it, if it gave them higher ratings.
I thought it was kind of funny when BW complained about the press being mean to her. Now she knows how Rosie felt. Although they weren’t half as mean to Bw as they were to Rosie.

Today’s show was some what boring to me, especially the vagina discussion, ..for pete sake.
I have to agree with Rainlillie, you can only do so much as a parent. Try to instill the best values in them, be open to all, and PROMPT some, discussions, tell them things they don’t want to hear, because they do hear, and they do pay attention, even though you think they don’t. Give as much love and praise as discipline.
In the end though it is up to them. You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make them drink.
Kids some times do make mistakes, get involved with or in things that can be potentially harmful. I don’t believe that it is always because of bad parenting. All we can do then is be there to help them.
I was happy to hear how Elisabeth was doing.

I feel a little bad that EH is hating AZ…I would hate to have to pick up and move my entire life all while eight months pregnant. Then again, I’m so glad that she’s not on the show. It feels much less preachy.
I didn’t really enjoy today’s show though. BW is just boring. There’s no other way to put it. How long is it going to take to get back to an engaging, meaningful show?

I love Whoopi, but I think Meredith was the best moderator. I like Rosie, but she was too polarizing. Meredith was well-informed, but more skilled at keeping the conversation balanced and letting everyone have a say (i.e. balanced doesn’t mean ALL viewpoints are equally legitimate). She wasn’t as much in the spotlight, but did a much better job of spreading the spotlight. Rosie and Whoopie are entertainers (and very good entertainers) but I’m not sure that’s the best training for the job of moderator of the View.
I’m trying to think of who could do it though. Maybe Maria Shriver now that she is out of journalism (although no idea if she would do it - probably not, NY is a long way from Calif.) Kathie Lee Gifford I think would be excellent. An she’s hysterically funny. She’s done the late night shows & daytime — a remarkably talented, and kind woman. That’s one of the things missing with EH - she comes across as very ethical and concerned, but not particularly kind. And although KLG is conservative, she’s not preachy.

Ok, so I just watched the segment on TMZ that BW was complaining about…and I don’t get it. Yes, they poked a little fun at her, but it really wasn’t that bad. It wasn’t vicious or cruel, just silly. You would think that after how long BW has been in this business, she would have developed some thicker skin…and maybe some more sympathy for those that are in similar, but worse situations (i.e. the Rosie/Donald Trump firestorm, or the Rosie/Fox News crap).

Karma coming to bite Bab’s with the TMZ segment. Now she knows how Rosie feels weekly.
I agree that EH is probably missing the spotlight in AZ. Even though she is in a red state she probably misses the closeness of the Faux News bunch in NYC.
Sadly, Geddes doesn’t appear to be trying to bring on intelligence to sit in for EH. Just nameless faces from reality shows, soaps and sitcoms. It is like it’s in freefall.

“Karma coming to bite Bab’s with the TMZ segment. Now she knows how Rosie feels weekly.”
I agree.

I agree with you for the most part. However, I don’t think being on a sitcom or a soap automatically means a person is unintelligent or poorly informed. Kassie DePaiva (from the soap OLTL) was on last week and I thought she was intelligent, well-informed and articulate.

“Sadly, Geddes doesn’t appear to be trying to bring on intelligence to sit in for EH. Just nameless faces from reality shows, soaps and sitcoms. It is like it’s in freefall.”
That’s true. I don’t most of the people who have been sitting in for EH.

Today’s show was lame, and they lost me at the Lynne Spears book story.
I loved seeing Joy’s non-reaction to the EH news. It’s obvious that she does not miss her. I’m not a fan of EH, but wish her well.
I knew Whoopi would get bent out about the whole parental involvement in a child’s behavior. Many years ago, there was a bunch of press here in NYC when Whoopi’s then 15-year-old daughter became a teenaged mother. I think it may have happened around the time Whoopi received her Oscar Award. Many children act out, especially when their parents are hitting the pinnacle of success…it is not unusual.
Geddes is only bring on people who are of equal caliber of the exisiting “talent.” In the case of EH, reality show stars pretty much fit the bill.
October 29th, 2007 at 5:49 pm
I would rather see established people in the industry host the show. Not people who have achieved fame on reality shows.

“I loved seeing Joy’s non-reaction to the EH news. It’s obvious that she does not miss her.”
LMAO! I was thinking the same thing.

Who died?
That was my thought when I saw them sitting there talking about Stephen Colbert as if they were at a wake. What was up with these women today? It was like they were very preoccupied … out to lunch. Joy seemed very frosty toward Whoopi, still pissed I guess from last week’s exchange. Whoopi back-pedaled a bit when they started to wrangle again over the “are the parents to blame?” topic and seemed to offer an olive branch, but Joy wasn’t having it.
But then it turns out Joy is still kind of sick, so maybe that was her problem.
My fevered imagination was working overtime, wondering what had taken place off-stage before they came on…. I wondered if Babs’s phone call from EH resulted in her telling them that she would not be coming back after all … and they were in shock. Or did she tell them she would definitely be coming back? Did she even say? She made a point of saying EH had called her. And I believe there are no accidents when it comes to these tidbits being tossed out to the audience about conversations that take place.
Yes, I loved the sour look on Joy’s puss when EH was brought up.
My hope is that EH & family end up loving that mild Arizona winter and the wide-open spaces (compared to NYC) so much, they just won’t want to go back.
Meanwhile, this panel is just weirder by the day. Today they seemed more alienated from one another than ever before.
Whoopi seems to be more like the old Whoopi day by day. I’d thought she’d been replaced by a pod person, till last week. I was surprised to hear her blurt out today that she had done a lot of drugs in her past. I’m sure the EP and ABC brass were thrilled.
It’s now become too bizarre to miss…. Stay tuned.
October 29th, 2007 at 8:39 pm
I just don’t enjoy the show anymore. I know I can’t keep comparing it to when Rosie was on but I can’t help it. At some point I’m going to have to decide if I’ll stop watching or keep watching and settle for what it’s become.
October 29th, 2007 at 8:49 pm
rainlillie- oh totally so agree about having established talent substitute. Let’s be honest, dumb move number one was to hire EH in the first place. I basically believe that Geddes and company have no intention of bringing on anyone remotely interesting, who will pop and excite the audience. They want to keep up the idea that EH represents young women across America.
Thankfully, I don’t know ANY 30 year olds who act like her, so I have not lost faith in my generation.
October 29th, 2007 at 8:56 pm
I thought the whole panel was in a semi daze when Bawa announced EH “missed everyone”..she might as well said “It’s 10:30 everyone” for all the reaction on their faces. Sherri managed a one side of the mouth half smile and said “we miss you too” in a half hearted way. I thought the 2 of them were best buds. Hope Whoopie can quit smoking. I quit many years ago while having a sore throat and decided it was too stupid to continue. I quit cold turkey all those years ago and thank goodness for that.

Lajet - I agree, I still miss Meredith every day. I liked Rosie too because she kept the show moving, but Meredith was the best moderator.
Rainlilie - I noticed the lack of interest on Joy’s face too when Barbara mentioned Elisabeth.

“Rainlilie - I noticed the lack of interest on Joy’s face too when Barbara mentioned Elisabeth.”
What was Joy’s reason for not being there on EH’s last day?
October 30th, 2007 at 8:32 am
Joy is rarely absent, so her not being there on EH’s last day was very odd. It’s not as though she ever came back and even said on-air the next day to say she was sorry she hadn’t been there for Lizzie’s last day…
Joy gives herself away with her wonderful facial expressions. I remember the time she and Star were in the on-air tiff. Basically, it seems that her philosophy is that it is important to just go on with the show, because life continues whether you or there or not.

I agree Viva…can’t decide to stop watching or settle for this much less entertaining show. We’ll see
