The View October 30th Recap: Merry Miller, David Foster and Tim Daly
Today on The View, the guest host was Merry Miller, who is well-known for an interview with Holly Hunter went awry. I posted about this previously and you can see the video of incident at this post. She said that she had never done a satellite interview before and did not know where to look and could not hear Holly.
Merry said that her doctor told her that she should consider freezing embryos because she is getting older and is not married. She discovered several girlfriends did that back in their early 30s. Sherri has three embryos frozen. She is not going to give the embryos away and they will stay there “until Jesus comes” or she decides to have more children.
People are paying $250 to bring a pet back to life. Sherri said if the animal is ill, you should just let them go. Joy talked about one elderly cat who the vet wanted to give an MRI to, even though it was very sick and unable to breathe. Whoopi said that if her cat Oliver was ill, she would not drag out his laugh, because he would not like to live that way.
Merry said that she wants to stop biting her nails. Whoopi said the next time she goes to do it, she should think about everything that she touched that day. Unless she cleaned her nails with a nail brush, her nails are not clean.
The next topic (with another bad segue) was when there is a divorce, who should get the friend and whether you should send a mass e-mail to notify everyone about the divorce. Joy said that usually the friends are the wife’s friends. Sherri said that there was a friend of her and her husband who she ran into. The woman was really cold to her following their separation. She wants to send an e-mail to everyone. Merry said that with an e-mail at least you can tell your own story. She added that some of her best girlfriends she got in their divorce settlements. She was initially friends with their husbands, but now is friends with them after their divorces.
Dick Cheney went to a private hunting club, which had a confederate flag in the window. Merry said that it is similar to an elected official in Germany going to a location that was showing a flag with swastika. Joy said that is different because it is illegal to have a swastika in Germany. Whoopi pointed out that Cheney does not really care about what people think about him.
Tomorrow is a Halloween special. Whoopi will be dressed in something “not female.” Sherri will be dancing with Ben Vareen on the show.
Bill O’Reilly said that if you talk about religion in a classroom, you can get fired, but if you talk negatively about the country, saying it is a fascist country, for example, nothing happens. Whoopi said it is because of the separation of church and state. Joy said that when she was a teacher during the Vietnam War, she spoke out against it in the classroom and was brought up on charges by the school. She also added that when she was went to public school as a child, she would read the Bible to everyone at assemblies.
Merry said that her family members are teachers and they don’t do the pledge of allegiance anymore. Whoopi said that the pledge did not used to say “under God.” Sherri said that when she was a child, as a Jehovah’s Witness, she would leave the room when they did certain celebrations, so people do not agree with the pledge, then they could leave the room. Joy said why couldn’t she just stay and not say anything and not leave the room. If you want to know more about the history of the pledge, there is this entry on wikipedia.
Tim Daly appeared on the show to promote Private Practice. He said that he loves Whoopi Goldberg. They were in The Associate together in 1996.
Tim said that the characters on Private Practice are good because they are flawed like real people. He likes his character because is involved in alternative medicine. Sherri said that she wants to know when his character is going to get together with Addison. Tim said that television romances are like really good sex because there is drawn out foreplay until you are out of ideas.
Joy said that she was shocked when Tim’s character was knocked off on The Sopranos. He knew his death was coming and talked with writer David Chase about it. He liked how it turned out because it was surprising.
Tim started to tell a story about how he was in a hotel room and had to take a shower, badly. Sherri said that she can’t imagine him stinking and then put her arm around him and started to smell him, pronouncing that he smelled good. Whoopi got up from the couch, walked around the back, moved Sherri’s arm and said, pointing to Tim, “That’s my friend.” (I guess it was suppose to be funny, but I didn’t think it was).
Tim then said “I have a question about this frozen embryo thing.” Merry responded, “You wanna help me?” Whoopi then got up, took Tim’s hand and pointed to his wedding ring. Tim said, “It is nothing but sex with you people!” Tim asked if Sherri decided to bring one of the babies to term, would the father have to pay child support? Merry said that men should always pay child support because she was raised by a single mom. Joy said that it is illegal to not pay child support and asked Merry if her mother knew that. Merry said that they did not know where he was, so they could not serve him.
Tim thinks that you should just make babies the old-fashioned way. Joy said, “But what if you can’t find a guy? Merry can’t find a guy!” Tim said that she is a beautiful woman, so what is wrong with men? Joy said that Merry shared with them during the break that she has commitment issues.
{Did anyone else think that the other hosts treated Merry oddly? I just got a weird vibe from them, especially Joy.}
David Foster appeared on the show. Merry said that she has a whole tape of break-up songs and half of them were written by David. She said that her favorite is the theme from St. Elmo’s Fire, and then he played a few bars of it on the piano. David said that he felt so at home there because he has so many sisters, ex-wives and daughters. Joy said, pointing to Merry, “She could use some sperm, you got any left over?” Merry said that she plays the harp professionally and would rather get a harp gig from him rather than sperm.
David Foster has an organization which helps children get organ transplants in Canada, where he is from.
David then played a few of his songs, saying which ex-wife got the money from the songs. He writes the music first and then his co-writer will add the lyrics.

So it seems that Sherri is trying to be the next EH, with her ignorant statements about the separation of church and state. She’s more enjoyable as a character on a sitcom than she is as herself.
I can’t believe she sarcastically said was it “under “Allah.” That shows Sherri’s lack of tolerance for other religious. Some Christians can’t understand that Allah is just as sacred to the Muslim religion as God and Jesus is to Christianity.
I’ve always wondered why people with religious views like Sherri’s would get science involved when they’re trying to conceive a baby. Maybe God didn’t want that particular person to conceive, therefore they should accept it and move on.
October 30th, 2007 at 10:27 am
I’m disappointed that Sherri would make a comment like that, I guess the way she said it bothered me more than anything. There was definitely more to her comment, I guess she’s not very open minded about other religious beliefs. She did seem quite passionate during that part of the conversation, which is fine, but to make a comment referencing muslims….why do that? What that does, is make people who feel just as passionately as her (about religion in school) think of muslims in a negative way, like its their fault theres a separation b/w church and state.
I dont think I’m doing a very good job of explaining what I mean but I just think its in bad taste to try and create bad blood b/w gruops when things are clearly so volatile already.
October 30th, 2007 at 10:37 am
Stephanie,
I agree with you. It was her tone when she said it. We all know that there is a lot of animosity from some rightwing Christians against Muslims.
Joy did say something to her about it, but I didn’t catch what she said.
October 30th, 2007 at 10:54 am
wow, this show is so bad now. Didn’t think it could get worse. I’m sorry but this is just not Whoopie’s bag. She’s terrible at segues and interviews and is just weird during hot topics. Sherrie is boring and not entertaining or interesting at all. Joy seems bored with it all. The topics are horrible. Haven’t seen it in a while so can’t comment on BW…but boy, has this show gone downhill.
October 30th, 2007 at 11:16 am
Agreed Lisa!
I also think the Tim Daly interview was one of the worst interviews I’ve ever seen - and that includes Merry Miller’s interview with Holly Hunter! It was just chaos and he didn’t even have a chance to tell his story. Do any of you watch The Office (American version)? You know the feeling you get when Michael Scott is saying/doing something completely inappropriate and it becomes really awkward? You cringe and you just can’t believe that happened. That’s how I feel most days now watching The View. Whether it’s a poorly conducted interview (Tim Daly, Nancy Pelosi etc) or lame hot topics or Whoopi’s moral authority - I just can’t believe what I’m seeing and hearing.
October 30th, 2007 at 11:17 am
I sorta enjoyed today’s show..so much that I refused to answer my ringing phone until about the 10th ring. Some people never give up. The show was fast paced..though I agree with Tim that they talk about sex too much. Merry seemed to be the typical “blonde person” with the interview. I probably would have done it the same way but am not a professional on t.v. The songs written by David Foster were beautiful..what talent! Tomorrow’s show will be fun.
October 30th, 2007 at 11:21 am
Actually Allah is the same God as that of Christians and Jews. The only thing that changes is the name. That is my understanding. Jerusalem is an important city to all three religions. This is one of Sherri’s four favorite (only?) subjects. The others: “My husband cheated on me, I am a MOM, I have big boods.” Seriously! But she looked nice today. Very professional. :}
October 30th, 2007 at 11:31 am
I remember reading that ‘Allah’ is the arabic name for God and some christians who live in the middle east and speak arabic also say ‘Allah’ when referring to God.
I wish they would have a panelist or even guest host that knew a little more about the rest of the world. Is that so hard?
October 30th, 2007 at 11:32 am
“Actually Allah is the same God as that of Christians and Jews. ”
True but I was pointing out how some people like Sherri are very intolerant of other religious holy figures. I’m sure she scored a lot points with EH for her dumba$$ comment!
October 30th, 2007 at 11:34 am
It doesn’t matter if Sherri knew the meaning or not. She said it to be sarcastic and to be insulting.
October 30th, 2007 at 11:39 am
True, and I bet she would be very upset if she felt someone was being intolerant towards her. I’m pretty sure she’ll make an issue of it, big time!
October 30th, 2007 at 11:41 am
May.
Merry seemed a little nervous to me. It was like she was a tad bit intimidated by the other women. Maybe she’s like that all of the time, that’s my first time seeing her on TV.
October 30th, 2007 at 11:58 am
I was a little weirded out by Sherri freezing her embryos and saying they will not be unfrozen ‘until Jesus comes’.
She says they are boys (I wouldn’t be surprised if she has named them) and feels they are babies now. So I don’t understand why she would keep them on ice?
Joy rolled her eyes. So did I.
Sherri is really showing ignorance. Her conversation regarding the pledge confirmed it for me. When Whoopi said “ya know the pledge did not originally include ‘Under God’ “, Sherri replied “what did it say”?
????
I just can’t understand how she got this job. Surely ONE requirement would be basic knowledge? Something other than boobs and cheating husbands?
I really dislike when someone says the way they are is because of how they were taught. After some time, its just an excuse, because just because you were taught a certain way does not mean you have to keep acting that way.
This show is sliding downhill fast. And it’s being helped by Sherri and Whoopi. The only one I can stand right now is Joy, but I don’t think she can save it from the snoozefest it’s become.
October 30th, 2007 at 11:58 am
How could Sherri not know that “under God” was not originally part of the Pledge of Allegiance? Her ignorance on important issues is scary…
I wish the EPs would have let them stay on the air long enough for Whoopi and Joy to explain it to Sherri. I wonder if they (the Eps) got mad that Whoopi made it clear that although she wanted to continue the conversation, they were forcing her to go to commercial…
October 30th, 2007 at 12:18 pm
“How could Sherri not know that “under God” was not originally part of the Pledge of Allegiance? ”
The people who didn’t know that, are the same people who believe that America was founded as a “Christian nation.”
October 30th, 2007 at 12:19 pm
I really enjoyed today’s show—maybe i am in the minority? Although I did not agree with the intolerance of Sherri’s narrow mind, I thought the show itself had a good, steady flow to it.
I think Whoopi was in her element today, especially with her comments about Dick Cheney.I feel she is slowly settling down in her new gig and we will see more of her authentic self as the time goes on.
As for Sherri, I didn’t quite understand her comments about the frozen embryos “until Jesus comes”.So what happens to her two frozen embryos(little boys,as she called them)—is she planning to thaw them and bring them to life or not? When? What happensto them if(god forbid)she dies tomorrow?
I feel they could have explored this topic and its ramifications more in depth. It had the potential for a good hot topic. Oh, well.
What a relief and pleasure not to have the shrill of EH interrupting constantly. Merry Miller was ok—better than BW and EH combined.
October 30th, 2007 at 12:21 pm
“I was a little weirded out by Sherri freezing her embryos and saying they will not be unfrozen ‘until Jesus comes’.”
I thought she was trying to be funny, until I saw the look on Joy’s face.
October 30th, 2007 at 12:24 pm
I thought the whole discussion about Cheney and the flag was just plain silly. Of all the rotten things he’s done, they talk about a flag…LOL!
October 30th, 2007 at 12:25 pm
“I was a little weirded out by Sherri freezing her embryos and saying they will not be unfrozen ‘until Jesus comes’.”
I thought she was trying to be funny, until I saw the look on Joy’s face.
I too thought she was kidding…or maybe I was just HOPING she was kidding… I want to know what she wants to do with those embryos after she dies. Morbid, yes, but if she truly believes those are “her boys”, how does she plan on “providing” for them after she’s gone?
October 30th, 2007 at 1:05 pm
I didn’t get to watch today’s show. So I will comment based on my own feelings. On what I am understanding took place by reading the comments so far.
Most people here know that I am a religious person and I do understand Sherri’s comment, and her beliefs.
If she was sarcastic, I’m sorry that she was, as I don’t think that is appropriate.
Allah is the Islamic name for God, as is Jehovah. I myself have a great tolerance for other religions, and believe that people should learn about all of them. Most especially before making comments about, and assumptions about. IMO.
I also think that the separation between church and state is a good thing, and am glad that it is in the constitution. Although I believe it is taken too far now a days, Such as the “Pledge of Allegiance”. It is still said at the schools in my area, and I’m glad that it is. We all grew up saying it and hearing it, and I don’t think it did any harm to any of us..did it? I always felt proud of it and my country, saying the Pledge, It didn’t make me or any of my family or friends intolerance to other people or religions. There has always been different cultures and religions in the U.S., always. So why now is it so important that the word God not be in it? And yes I was aware that it was not always, but am not sure of as to when it was added. I just simply don’t understand why it is such a big deal?
I agree with Joy, if you don’t want to say it, don’t, that’s a person’s right for religious or whatever reasons. But I don’t think it should be taken from our schools. I think our children need it, to help give and learn pride in what the Pledge of Allegiance really stands for, the liberty, freedom, and justice for all in their country.
Sorry this was so long.
October 30th, 2007 at 1:37 pm
The Pledge of Allegiance was changed to include “under God” in 1954, by Pres. Eisenhower.
I personally think it should be changed back. I believe that the separation of church and state is vital to religious freedom…and promoting one single, Christian deity violates that separation. That said, however, I think that there are bigger fish to fry, so to speak. I think that that unconstitutional addition to the pledge is a minor issue when compared to all the other obstacles this country is facing from the current administration at the moment.
October 30th, 2007 at 1:40 pm
I think the pledge should be said without the word “God,” because there are some people who don’t worship God and there are some people who call God by another name.
Which means those people will feel excluded. I think if people want religion taught in schools they should send their children to religious schools. That way everyone is happy.
October 30th, 2007 at 1:42 pm

I totally agree.

jjb,
I feel they could have explored this topic and its ramifications more in depth. It had the potential for a good hot topic. Oh, well
I agree with you.
I agree that Sherri’s statement about the frozen embryo’s was kind of weird.
Rainville,
I’ve always wondered why people with religious views like Sherri’s would get science involved when they’re trying to conceive a baby. Maybe God didn’t want that particular person to conceive, therefore they should accept it and move on.
I think that some people with Sherri’s religious views, do feel that way, and that’s what they do.
However God doesn’t have anything at all against science, or helping oneself. that’s my understanding anyway.
October 30th, 2007 at 2:05 pm
It just seems a bit hypocritical to me that Sherri says she doesn’t believe in evolution for religious reasons, but she wants science to step in when she wants to have a child. I’m sure some people believe in a little of both. That’s not the impression I got with Sherri.
October 30th, 2007 at 2:13 pm
Sasha,.. & Rainlillie,
I totaly agree, the Pledge doesn’t have to contain the word “God”, that’s not what is important about it at all. I think you said what I wanted to, just a lot simplier.
I also agree that the separation of church and state is vital to it’s freedom.
I agree also that this is a minor issue compared with a lot of other things going on in this country.
October 30th, 2007 at 2:18 pm
The interaction with Merry was odd, and I didn’t enjoy her at all. She could have been plucked out of the audience- it was that random.
The Daly interview- worst in the history of the show next to Pelosi, as mentioned by someone earlier- totally agree. Whoopi’s bit during the segment was not funny at all.
Joy looks like she is in pain sitting with these people. At first I think it was like those days when you have a substitute teacher in school, and there is fun, because you can do whatever you want. However, now the classroom has turned chaotic, and there is no sign of the teacher ever returning.
Chemistry on this show is just plain awful. Please Sherri, don’t implant the embryos…I don’t want to hear about that next.
October 30th, 2007 at 3:01 pm
Hi All. I cannot bear to watch this show but I do read Winnie’s updates (that whole train-wreck thing!).
Re: The Separation of Church & State
Am I the only one who wonders why charitable donations to religious organizations are tax deductible? And, why are religious organizations exempt from taxation? (there’s a HUGE revenue source!) I am a non-theist (God is not an issue for me one way or another) but my tax dollars subsidize organizations in which people choose to participate based on their own beliefs … why not just support individual religious educators out of the goodness of the participant’s heart without benefitting from a tax write-off?
I don’t have children but using my tax dollars to support schools feels differently because along the way, I personally benefit from dealing with educated young people — in fact, I wish we subsidized more for college students too.
I don’t find myself benefitting from people attending church … most times, quite the contrary. Being non-theist means to live in peace, honor nature and the planet, to be responsible and to be a good person because it’s the right thing to do — no fear of punishment, no earning rewards later.
Don’t even get me started on the use of my tax dollars for this *&^%# admin’s war.
Whew! I feel better now.
October 30th, 2007 at 5:59 pm
hello!
completely agree with the “seperation of church and state”, but for the record, it isn’t in the constitution. no kidding!
the concept is Thomas Jefferson’s and it was originally about preventing a state-MANDATED church (which Christians would be opposed to as strongly as anyone, btw).
also completely agree with having the same reaction to the show as i have to Micheal Scott on The Office. squirm, cringe, squirm.
October 30th, 2007 at 6:42 pm
But when the character of Michael Scott says something cringe worthy, I can laugh because he is a sitcom character. When a person on tv, not in a character says something cringe worthy, I am uncomfortable.
I am only showing my age, but People, when they added under God, it took all of us forever to remember to say it! I do not believe it belongs there…it is a public vow of allegiance to our country…and our country does not have a state religion.

Sasha said:
” I wonder if they (the Eps) got mad that Whoopi made it clear that although she wanted to continue the conversation, they were forcing her to go to commercial…”
Yes, I LOVE that Whoopi makes it clear she is being “directed” via that earpiece.
As for God & the Pledge of Allegiance debacle — we really MUST keep THIS war waging. After all:
–It sells lots of crappy books and hats and coffee cups and other tacky sh*t being hawked by Fox & Fox-Like folks;
– It divides us even more than ever.
– It deludes ignorant young people who weren’t around when Ike inserted “God” into the Pledge into thinking that the word has always been there;
– And it is a distraction from talking about Bush’s War and all his other failures and the danger he continues to put us in.
October 30th, 2007 at 8:53 pm
Whoopie is just not funny anymore. The great thing about Rosie, was that she refused to wear the ear piece. That’s why she was so fresh, exciting and real to watch. It allowed her talent to shine through. This is just scripted, boring, cookie-cutter crap TV….I’m sorry but the show just sucks right now.
October 30th, 2007 at 8:54 pm
Yikes!
I hope everyone knows that my last post wasn’t meant to criticize people HERE who are debating the “God in the Pledge” topic!!
I was just thinking about the blowhards in the press & the pundits who turned this topic into a wedge issue, dividing and distracting us yet again.
October 31st, 2007 at 6:14 am
“This is one of Sherri’s four favorite (only?) subjects. The others: “My husband cheated on me, I am a MOM, I have big boods.” Seriously! But she looked nice today. Very professional. :}”
I was suprised to learn that her son is in LA–she talked about visiting him there today. I wonder what their custody agreement is.
October 31st, 2007 at 6:48 am
“I was just thinking about the blowhards in the press & the pundits who turned this topic into a wedge issue, dividing and distracting us yet again.”
Amen. And since Rosie left, they hardly ever do any relevant, important hot topics. All we get are the stupid studies, trite relationship crap, celebrity bs, and “What did you do last night/over the weekend”? God forbid women ever think about serious issues!
Winnie, yes, I noticed that Joy seemed miffed at having Merry on. I think she was disgusted that someone famous for doing so poorly got to guest host.
October 31st, 2007 at 12:42 pm
Peaches,
Yikes!
I hope everyone knows that my last post wasn’t meant to criticize people HERE who are debating the “God in the Pledge” topic
I think we all understand that you were not criticizing anyone here. i hope and i think must people realize that this is not an important issue in our country right now. I also think it is just to divide us more.
In my personal life i haven’t come accross anyone who really believes that the words “Under God” must stay in the Pledge.
So I don’t believe that it is doing what they want. (I hope)
November 1st, 2007 at 6:41 am
Sandy & Rainlilie - I totally agree with you both. Sherri refuses to believe in evolution (i.e. the SCIENTIFIC explanation of why we are here), yet, she uses science to have a child (and good luck to her) when her God has (cruelly) failed her in having a baby naturally. I’m an ex-catholic atheist, but I remember that all the Jewish, Christian and Muslim holidays and feast days fall at around the same time, because they all came from the same source (judaism).
November 1st, 2007 at 6:46 am
Beverly, I can understand why you are frustrated. I think that in trying to impose compulsory religion on the US, Bush has actually started a spiral downturn for religion in your country, he has created a backlash where people are now saying that it is OK not to believe in Christianity. I think if anything he has turned Americans against religion. I noticed that Christopher Hitchens the journalist also put this down to the Terri Schiavo affair, when people said “wait a minute, religion is going to far and interfering too much”. I think more atheists and “not so sures” will be more comfortable in stating their views.
November 1st, 2007 at 8:52 am
Ann,
One of he problems I have with the current administration, is it seems that their policies are driven by their religious beliefs. It’s been reported that Bush has claimed “he was on a mission from God when he launched the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq.”
This scares me , because he’s being guided by religion, rather than logic.
November 1st, 2007 at 1:41 pm
Rainville,
Very respectfully I’d like to say this.
I’m not going to defend Bush, and / or his mission in the Afghanistan and Iraq wars, that is a subject I’m not going to undertake. BUT, I can not just sit here and read religion be blamed for it.
It is NOT a mission from God. I don’t know what you read, or from where, or if it is true or not. (that Bush said this). But I do know that it is not a mission of God’s to wage these wars. If Bush did say it, it is HIS ..?..craziness, not religion’s, and not God’s. And it makes me angry..
.NOT that you think this, or that it scares you. I understand why it would if that’s what you read, if that is what Bush said. It makes me angry to have religion used in that way.
November 1st, 2007 at 2:11 pm
Sandy,
I’m not blaming religion for Bush’s decision to start these wars. I’m simply quoting what’s been reported. http://www.guardian.co.uk/usa/story/0,12271,1586978,00.html
That’s one of the problems among many that I have with GWB and his followers. I think they like Bin Laden use religion to justify their immoral behavior.
November 1st, 2007 at 2:59 pm
Rainlille,
I understand that you were quoting something. I also understand that you don’t blame religion for the current wars,..you were conveying something that Bush said.
My comment was more or less for me, I hope you understand that.
Also it was for others who might read this and believe that religion and or God is somehow to blame. (Since GWB is “suppose to be” religious) Some times people get the wrong impression.
Thanks for the link, I will go read it.
November 1st, 2007 at 3:07 pm
Sandy,
I understnd where you’re coming from. Although I personally don’t believe in organized religion. I do believe in God and I try to follow the teachings of Christ. I think it’s horrible when people use religion in a divisive way. We see that with extremist like Bin Laden who have caused so much harm around the world and they’ve caused some what of a backlash against Islam.

TO ALL BRILLIANTLY INSIGHTFUL POSTS: Your observations are great and very well expressed.I will admit here that watching The View is my guilty pleasure. Like passing an automobile accident on the freeway during rush hour. I just can’t look away. With one notable exception, (Joy Behar, who should have her own show) the rest of the group is a DISASTER. Here’s my take on them: Barbara, The Den Mother Emeritus: She has lost whatever credibility she claims to have had. It’s time for her to move on and continue to rest on her laurels and quit using the show to promote her specials. Elisabeth The Air-Head: May she remain on maternity leave in the land of reality TV forever. Whoopi So Glad To Have The Job: A brilliant stand-up comic, but completely out of her element and totally inept as moderator. And last but not least: Sherri, One child who was definitely left behind: This 40 year-old inexcusably ignorant woman was fine as an occasional guest, but giving her a permanent place at the table was a HUGE mistake. Instead of the recent new-comer’s tour of New York that the producers sent her on, they should have escorted her to the nearest elementary school to complete her education. And let’s all hope that those frozen embryo “little boys” of hers (Larry, Moe and Curly) will wait for Jesus. Barbara and Bill The View Master should both have their heads examined for hiring this woman for anything more than comic relief during bitch slaps.
