The View October 9th Recap: Angela Bassett
Today on The View, it was the four main hosts and no Barbara Walters. Whoopi Goldberg is sick, so she gave each of the co-hosts some hand cleanser.
Elisabeth Hasselbeck said that election-itis is going around. Whoopi said that people are getting political fatigue. They showed a video of a man introducing Joe Biden at a rally and accidentally calling him “John McCain.” Elisabeth said that we can make it because we are “only one menstrual cycle away” from the election. Joy said that would be an eternity for her (Joy).
Whoopi asked if it is fair to go after Obama’s links, when all the candidates have links. She said that there were several members in the Congress who were KKK members. Should we be concerned with people who associated with them? Elisabeth said we should investigate connections on both sides. They talked about Ayers again and Elisabeth said she wants Obama to be truthful about working with Ayers and Whoopi said that he was when it was brought up at the Democratic debate.
Joy brought up about how Sarah Palin’s husband was a member of the Alaska International Party. Elisabeth said that should be investigated. Joy said it is not patriotic to want to secede. Elisabeth said that she would bet her blond highlights that if you lined the candidates next to one another and their connections, you would not chose Obama to be president. Sherri said that all of this is exhausting. She said that all relationships are all so incestuous, noting that the board Obama that sat on with Ayers, was run by the Annenberg Foundation and Annenberg’s widow is supporting McCain. Elisabeth said it is just not Ayers, it is all the other connections. Joy wants to know if the American people really give a damn about all this when they can’t pay their mortgage.
Cindy McCain said that she “got a cold chill” when Obama voted against troop funding and Whoopi said that she wasn’t telling the whole story. Whoopi said that there was a bill about troops to bring the troops home, which had fat on it. Obama voted for it, McCain did not. The president vetoed it and then McCain voted for it and Obama did not. Elisabeth said that we should have clean bills so that we know where people stand.
A Florida sheriff is in trouble for calling Barack Obama “Barack Hussein Obama” at a rally. Joy said that has been happening a lot at stump speeches and McCain should tell them to stop that. Whoopi said that she thinks he is trying to do that and Elisabeth said that the campaign said that they don’t condone that rhetoric.
Politics has made its way into classrooms. There is a video of a grade school class singing a song about Obama. Joy said it looked like a cult. A middle school teacher was suspended for incorporating Obama into a drill. Elisabeth said it does not belong in schools and the teachers need to practice restraint. Joy said that if you take it out of schools, you should take it out of churches as well. Elisabeth said that most churches opt out of political discussion for tax reasons. Sherri said that politicians come to Black churches often to encourage voter turn-out. Joy said that both sides should be brought in. Elisabeth said that Madonna even brought up politics. Joy said that she can say whatever she wants.
There is a new PSA that discourages people from using the phrase “That’s So Gay.”
Dancing with the Stars professional dancer Cheryl Burke has been criticized for gaining weight, but she only gained five pounds. Whoopi said her breast weighs more than that. There was also a photo of Eva Longoria in the paper that called her “slimmed down,” and Elisabeth said that now they are just keeping track of how many ounces people are gaining and losing.
Elisabeth said that Whoopi has been right all along about the economic problems. They showed several clips of Whoopi arguing that there should be relief given to the homeowners in the form of a partial amnesty. Whoopi said it is not McCain’s idea, as she has been talking about it for awhile. She said that people should not dismiss what they say on the show. Elisabeth said that McCain wants to reassess all the values of the homes. Whoopi said that won’t work and they should do 25% straight across the board relief. Joy said that the trillion dollar bailout could have paid for everything, including universal health care. Joy said that people are scared that bailing out people is going to be socialism, but it is capitalism if you bail out the banks, which they are okay with.
Angela Bassett appeared on the show to promote her role on ER. She plays the “tough new boss who terrorizes the staff.” She loves the role and has a great time doing. Joy said that they are lucky to have her on the show. Bassett said it is hard to remember all the medical lingo. Her husband, Courtney B Vance, will be joining ER as well. They have been married 11 years this weekend. Her children are “wonderful.” They showed a photo of them with her when she got her star on the Hollywood walk of fame. Sherri asked about old cast members coming back for the series finale, like Noah Wylie and George Clooney. Bassett says that if Clooney is coming on, they aren’t telling her.
Bassett was in How Stella Got Her Grove Back with Whoopi in 1998. Bassett said it was “so much fun” to work with Whoopi. Joy said that they look like teenagers in the movie. Whoopi said that they had a great cast and it was fun to do. When the cast got to Jamaica they “lost their minds.” Bassett will soon be turning 50. Sherri asked how she looks so young. Bassett said it is great lighting and make-up, as well as joy.
The next segment was “5 Fabulous Things for Fabu-Less.”
* Puma custom shoes; pick your colors and fabric: $100
* Open table: free site to get restaurant reservations
* Ask Sunday, online personal assistant; $39/month
* Stila Talking Palette: custom make-up that tells you how to apply it; $40
* Adorn Brides: rent jewelry, not just for brides; $90 and up
Whoopi said that after Dr. Susan Love was on yesterday for the Breast Cancer Awareness special, she got 40,000 more people to join her Army of Women. You can join too at her website: Army if Women.

I said on another post I’m gad Joy talked about Palin’s hubby belonging to the anti-American group the AIP. I wish she had of read a couple of the founders quotes. He said:
“The fires of hell are frozen glaciers compared to my hatred for the American government,” Vogler said in the interview, in which he talked extensively about his desire for Alaskan secession, the key goal of the AIP.
“And I won’t be buried under their damn flag,” Vogler continued in the interview, which also touched on his disappointment with the American judicial system. “I’ll be buried in Dawson. And when Alaska is an independent nation they can bring my bones home.”
At another point, Volger advocated renouncing allegiance to the United States. In the course of denouncing Federal regulation over land, he said:
“And then you get mad. And you say, the hell with them. And you renounce allegiance, and you pledge your efforts, your effects, your honor, your life to Alaska.”

RECAP: A Florida sheriff is in trouble for calling Barack Obama “Barack Hussein Obama” at a rally. Joy said that has been happening a lot at stump speeches and McCain should tell them to stop that. Whoopi said that she thinks he is trying to do that and Elisabeth said that the campaign said that they don’t condone that rhetoric.
Sheesh. I understand if EH misstated this, but I expect more from the others. He’s not in trouble for using “Hussein”. He’s in trouble for introducing SP at a political rally in his Sheriff’s uniform. He’s an elected official and it’s a violation of the Hatch Act. “Hussein” adds a level of nastiness to it, but it’s not what he is in trouble for.
October 9th, 2008 at 10:13 am
I wonder why they didn’t mention that someone yelled “kill Him” and someone even called Obama a “terrorist.” This was done in front of Palin and McCain. Maybe they didn’t hear it, but once they found out, they should have denounced it.
October 9th, 2008 at 10:13 am
In response to todays show, I don’t even know where to start. It isn’t a matter of who you support, but a matter of how you steer the viewers on your show. Elizabeth Hasseback is just a clear example of how blind people really are. The other three woman on the show are very intelligent with their statements, and comments. More specifically trying to compare notes on which Candidate has a better record on paper due to their so-called friendships, alliances, etc.. is just a far cry from the truth. Is is not in America that people are allowed to make mistakes, and be forgiven? I mean seriously nobody cares who they know or what they do in their spare time. What the people care about is how much America is hurting, and in desperate need of a change!! Sometimes people learn the most from the ones that have made the worst mistakes, ie (William Heirs)!! She is not professional, a role-model, or anyone that I would want to relate to. I am a 27 year old, educated WHITE female, that has no idea how a woman of her caliber can be on a show such as the view.. I mean she was on SURVIVER for crying out loud!! I guess I am really aggravated with the context in which she choses use. I don’t think she respects or supports any black people!! The clip in which a school in MO showed the black men/boys in how Obama is their role-model was wonderful. I am from StLouis, and you have know idea how much Obama has impacted people of all races to become the best they can be!! He is an inspiration and a hero to many, and is that not one of the first questions you are asked in kindergarten?? Who is your Hero, or role-model??? So because they all said Obama, it now shouldn’t be allowed!!! Come on people!! Please just remove her from the show!! Replace her with a woman that will not make MISTAKES time and time again!!
October 9th, 2008 at 10:17 am
rainlillie: I saw the video of when the man in the crowd shouted “terrorist.” To me it looks like McCain heard it and flinched and then said nothing. They might eventually “denounce” it publicly, but the things that they say in their speeches and they way they say them will continue to incite that kind of reaction, which is obviously their goal.
October 9th, 2008 at 10:23 am
#3 You can bet they heard it..they probably
had a plant in the audience..wouldn’t put it
past them. Just the fact that they draw these kinds of crowds tell you something.
October 9th, 2008 at 10:27 am
Rainlillie - I wondered why they didn’t get into that as well but I found them all pretty flat today. I agree that they, as are most people, tired of it all and just want to get it over with. Even Joy and Sherri, who were well prepared with facts to dispute EH’s same rant about Bill Ayers, were looking like they didn’t feel it was worth their effort anymore. However, if EH wants to cast a stone for just associating or “palling around”, in the words of the Senator Palin, I guess John McCain and his camp shouldn’t be attending any more rallies. It isn’t responsible to encourage talk like “kill him” about your opponent. As we are always telling our children, if you don’t speak up against someone being bullied, be it physical or verbal, you are as guilty at those doing the bullying.
October 9th, 2008 at 10:40 am
I think McCain did hear someone yell “terrorist.” I’m sure the McCain supporters will say he didn’t hear it, which is why I said either way they should make strong statements against it. I also agree that the candidates set the tone for the rallies. I’ve never seen anything so scary before. It was reported today someone said “off with his head” at a McCain/Palin rally.

AYERS…AYERS…AYERS…AYERS…AYERS
I THINK LIZZY NEEDS A LOBOTOMY THAT’S ALL THAT COMES OUT OF HER MOUTH. JUDGEMENT?
ASSOCIATIONS? YAH LIZZY YOU NEED TO START
FACT CHECKING YOUR CANDIDATE.
October 9th, 2008 at 11:03 am
Not impressed makes a good point. “Just the fact that they draw these type of crowds tells you something”. None of those chants were denounced. If I read it correctly, EH stated that the association SP and the 1st dude have with the AIP “should be investigated”. Really? Yeah….she says that as if she hasn’t heard of their association to this group prior to the show. SP was not a member but, as govenor, she supported this group and even spoke at a convention at the beginning of the year. Hmmmmmm…..
October 9th, 2008 at 11:07 am
I thought the children that were doing the drill, were saying that Obama inspired them. As young African American males, they now feel that it’s possible for them to become anything they set there sights on. I thought it was a positive message. Just as Hilary inspired young girls. I remember a commercial with children of all races saying.. “I am Nelson Mandela.”
October 9th, 2008 at 11:11 am
EH: “I’ll bet my blonde highlights”… When Obama wins, I can’t wait to see Elizabeth’s natural hair color.
October 9th, 2008 at 11:20 am
You can see her natural hair colour–look at her roots. Why did EH think the Obama songs by the school children were so offensive when Rush Limbaugh plays a very racist song on his radio all the time? I’m sure EH would love it.
October 9th, 2008 at 11:24 am
the drill s are a take on historically african american frats snd soroities pledges it think it is nice that they pledge to do something good instead of to Alpha Phi Alpha. though maybe a teacher is not who should organize this.
i also thought the obama kids singing was a little much but kids will pick up things no matter what but we do have to be careful to not let our politic seap into our work. I recall a teacher getting in trouble for telling student hateful things about obama. and a mayor sending on his professinal email a chian letter saying obama was the antichrist ( he said he sent it to see if it was true).
October 9th, 2008 at 11:30 am
I think the view people may be reading this blog ok maybe not but it funny if they were
I think the girls are either tired of elction/ayers topic or have been told they have to behave

/re; 10/09 political discussion on “gult by association”. I love Elisabeth and her spunk, and her ability to hold her own against the other ladies of the View. BUT, I must say, she has a bad case of tunnel vision regarding the candidates. I am the only Dem. left in my family, (husband, and two married sons and their wives are Rep.). When they come up with a negative against Obama, I don’t blindly defend him. Thanks to the internet, you can ferret out the facts. I agree with Whoopie, everyone has “crap on their shoes”, to defend your candidate by saying that he has “less crap” is an argument that most Americans who are genuinely concerned with the issues don’t want to hear.
October 9th, 2008 at 11:39 am
I do hope whoopie starts to feel better. She looked very uncomfortable. I do believe that we need to know about candidates past. I believe that is important. My problem comes from EH only seeing what she wants to see. I have read many things about mccain and people that he associated with. If you believe everything than you believe that McCain traded information with his captures at the POW camp so to have easier treatment. Does that mean he associated with a terrorist organization? Sometimes for the better good, you overlook a persons past to move on to a better future! I know that my past is not squeaky clean is yours?
October 9th, 2008 at 11:40 am
in regard to Mccain’s claim to be the only one and first one to suggest home owners be given some relief, reality check on CBS evening news Oct 8th says is exaggerated. Similiar authority was granted in last weeks bail out bill. Obama proposed the same idea two weeks ago, and as ya’ll proofed today Whoopi proposed it month ago. Let’s not let him get away with yet another lie.
October 9th, 2008 at 11:47 am
This has been bugging me; but my husband’s brother had open-heart surgery because of a bad tooth. He let a tooth become infected, and underwent dental surgery without an antibiotic pre-treatment. He became very very sick and his blood carried the infection from his mouth to his heart, which became weakened and in need of a valve replacement. He now ticks from the heart valve and will be on blood thinners the rest of his life!
Didn’t Whoopi say she had let her dental hygiene go and was suffering from a sore mouth?
October 9th, 2008 at 11:48 am
To add to Kelly’s comment of Barack’s name, Barack was given to him by his Kenyon father, and Hussein was his Grandfather’s name who was from Niarobi.
October 9th, 2008 at 11:50 am
I thought it was strange that Sherri said AB was turning 50 when her b-day was almost 2 months ago-the same day as Madonna’s.
October 9th, 2008 at 11:57 am
Did you notice how EH downplayed the association of Palin with an AIP member?
It was Only her husband- no biggie.
October 9th, 2008 at 12:15 pm
Erika,
She had a frozen look on her face when Joy mentioned it.

Rain, and Brooke- Exactly!! At least it’s not Flavor Flav to quote Chris Rock, or another rapper, and it’s nice to have other hero’s besides sports icons and the like.
For the upteenth time it’s not that most of us don’t want to hear the other side, but the crazy ramblings of EH are just silly. Please bring another conservative female to the table. I can’t believe they let Star Jones go for being a bridezilla and are keeping this schmuck at the table!!
October 9th, 2008 at 12:24 pm
I know there are alot of Obama supporters here and I hope I don’t offend anyone-that being said…
After hearing the debate the other night, I was wondering how each candidates plans would effect me personally.
My husband is a small contractor, we have a few subs (responsible for their own taxes,) and a couple newbies/apprentices.
If what I understood fromt he debate is correct, we will not be able to continue our buisness in Obama’s plan. Our taxes would double, and we would be mandated to supply health insurance to 2 kids (20 somethings.) We don’t even have health insurance for ourselves, never mind trying to carry 2 others. Our buisness is 4 years old and has been growing, but we could not survive his plan as I understand it.
Not only us, but I was thinking of other contractors we know, plumbers, elctricians, masons and their small crews-there is no way these types can take that burden. Actually, I can’t see small local buisnesses-shops etc…being able to do that either.
This is making me very nervous about our future. I’ve got a call into our accountant to discuss it with her.
October 9th, 2008 at 12:32 pm
What I’ve heard about the McCain/Palin rallies is very disturbing, I mean these people are not too far from having modern day KKK rallies, and I know that come election day there’s going to be trouble.
It’s ok for a black man to join the military and go fight and possibly die in a war for this country, but how dare they think they can be the president. Wow, think about it. My grandfather fought in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam, and a couple of my uncles were in Vietnam.
One of my uncles still talks about how he could not get served in a restaurant in Bakersfield CA, after coming home from Vietnam, and it’s just outrageous that racism is still so alive.
We go around telling other countries they need to be more like us, but we have alot of issues in this country. Believe me, alot of foreigners recognize that, they’re not stupid.
October 9th, 2008 at 12:32 pm
20-somethings would not fall under the mandate, as they are not children.
Your business would not get a tax increase unless you make more than $250,000.

PRIOR POST: Lajet #2 What is in a name?
Barack Hussein Obama II
RESPONSE: I’m not sure what your point is. It’s irrelevant.
The sheriff isn’t in trouble for saying “Hussein”. He’s in trouble for allegedly violating the Hatch Act. An elected official cannot appear in their official capacity at a partisan event. This isn’t a semantics game.
I’ll ignore the disingenous part of your post that suggests there was no ulterior, partisan, ugly motive behind using Obama’s middle name since it is IRRELEVANT.
October 9th, 2008 at 1:09 pm
The McCain camp appeared on Hannity and Colmes yesterday, for an interview with Palin and McCain. Guess what the topic was most of the interview. This was after the campaign released a statement denouncing the vile attacks against Senator Obama. Now, EH can state that the McCain camp does not condone the attack remarks against Senator Obama but the vile remarks are a result of Palin constantly associating Senator Obama with terriorists, unpatriotic and the demeaning use of his middle name Hussein by some of her speakers.
Now, the McCain camp thinks the american people cannot recognize he can still get his message of Senator Obama and the Bill Ayers connection through Fox News (HANNITY) and EH’s talking points. She is a parrot for Hannity. There is no difference in their use of words and phrases linking Senator Obama and Bill Ayers. Hannity states there are more radical connections associated with Senator. Listen to EH - same talking points.
Regarding McCain’s remarks during the debate to assist people going through foreclosure, check out the US Senate website and read bill H.R. 1424 - Section 109 - Foreclosure Mitigation Efforts. John McCain signed the bill and now he is trying to sway his base that he will introduce measures to help persons going through foreclosure. Did he forget measures are already built into the H.R. 1424. Probably, because he was not the Senator(s) who introduced Section 109 to this bill. Other TV stations (not Fox news)have discussed his remark at the debate and referred to the bill.
John McCain thinks he is entitled to the Presidency because of his hero status. he is still fighting the
October 9th, 2008 at 1:14 pm
I wish Joy would of brought up the incident of the 11 year old boy in Aurora, CO that wore the hand written shirt “Obama a terrorist’s best friend”. Sean Hannity had a segment on his show about it, and the child and father were there, and Sean thought that was ok for this child to wear it. That was truly appalling because the was pure negativity. I wonder if Elisabeth would of denounced Sean for this behavior. If she thinks children shouldn’t sing Obama praises, then she should definitely should be againist children being used as pawn negatively for the parents benefit. How would she dodge this? At least Joy said that it should stay out of the school system for anybody. I bet my blonde highlights Elisabeth just wants it out if it is in Obama’s favor. BTW, you can tell Bill Gedde’s has probably chastised the co-hosts for getting out of hand, and to tone it down until the election is over. Waaayyyy to obvious.
October 9th, 2008 at 1:17 pm
I apologize for my incomplete message above. John McCain is still fighting the Vietnam War. We appreciate his sacrifices during his military service and as a prisoner in Vietnam.
October 9th, 2008 at 1:19 pm
Ok now I am pissed! In hot topics EH talked about how kids used in the campaign by showing video clips examples. The first video clip I agreed with her assessment and it was not right. I understand the teachers might have been trying to teach the kids about government involvement but there is a much better way in teaching such as skits about government history and forum to show the value of the democratic system that has helped the country to evolve. Or teaching and doing a video about the history of the men running for President and the positives they have accomplished in their states. Keeping it bias. HOWEVER, for the video of the young black men, her assessment had a hidden agenda. Do we look stupid!! I pissed because of two things.
(1) I am pissed at that teacher or person who put that video together and their butts should be fired. What were they thinking, exploiting my child in such a way? I would have had my child’s butt for that. Yes, and I am a person of color. Moreover, I do not tolerate this from anyone especially my kids.
(2) EH and McCain was doing some more backhanded politicking again by showing this video is to say see their militant, stirring up a negative perspective of people of color therefore a negative of electing Obama.
It is amazing out of all the other videos of this nature out there she picked this extreme one to represent her point.
Why do they want this to become a racial thing? Do they think the other people of color and the world are swallowing this well? Wondering if an American Hispanic, Oriental, Jew, Indian, Mormon or other was running for President would be treated this same way. What kind of mud would they throw then? How can we claim to be a country for all people if we reprimand those from certain groups who some fill have stepped out of their perceived place? This is not only about racial issues but also economic issues. Are they going to say next if you are poor, you cannot be educated enough or astute enough to help this country politically? What’s with the message they are sending out?!? Is the Presidency only for the elite or one ethnic group? Are they willing to jeopardize their integrity just to say, “I’m President”? Is this what would have happen to Romney if he had been nominated even if he was the best person to handle the economic situation? EH is getting just as dirty as McCain’s people. And at what cost? Those people she’s alienating are the people who she might have to turn in her business career. This is so stupid and irresponsible!!! They did let EH talk today and look what happen. And we are listening. Hmmmmm!

I was laughing too hard!! Letting Star Jones go was a bad move by replacing her with EH!!! Seriously I think she has let all those blond highlights do something to her head!!!
October 9th, 2008 at 1:32 pm
GO JUNE!!! That is exactly what I’m talking about!! She needs to be casted off the show, she is playing unfair and dirty, and everyone else knows it!! To speak on Junes point; Yes were are watching and it irritates those who can clearly distinguish her motives. It is one thing to discuss both candidates, but she clearly went to far today!! I just hope that other people do not read into EH line OF SHIT!!
October 9th, 2008 at 1:33 pm
Hi, June - I’m white (just for reference) and I agree with you that there is a LOT of who is black, and who is white, and who is a woman. It’s irrelevant. The best PERSON for the job is the one who should win (for reference, I’m voting for Obama).
With regard to the list above. “We” don’t use “Oriental” for a person. It’s now “Asian.”
AND, I noted that your list of color didn’t include white. I’m confused (and I really want to understand this) - is white a color? Not a color? Is it included or not with “people of color”? (Because it seems like if all the other colors are colors, then white is too, and then we’re all alike and have nothing to fight about. Oh, that it were so.)
I also wanted to comment to June - Thank You for intelligently expressing a “different” opinion. I can appreciate where you’re coming from whether or not I see it the same way. Perhaps if we can get rid of EH, you would have a new job as a bright, respectful “other view.”
October 9th, 2008 at 1:41 pm
To speak on the point of color. No, white people are not included when people refer to “people of color” It includes all minority groups, which we clearly are not!
Yes we should be all equal, and we as a country are moving forward towards that goal, but we still are not there yet! So in light of that, she means that nobody places the race card on WHITE PEOPLE, but if it were any other person of color what would they be saying!! Thats all!!
October 9th, 2008 at 1:49 pm
In the VP debate Palin gave a ’shout out’ to her brother’s 3rd grade elementary school class who were going to recieve an extra credit to stay up and watch the VP debate. I guess that also includes using school children for manipulation.
Why oh why is Elisabeth still on that show? It defies reason that we all have to put up with such poor decorum.
October 9th, 2008 at 1:52 pm
By the way it was Jane I was referring to!!
October 9th, 2008 at 2:11 pm
Wow for a second there, I thought some were agreeing with something I said and I was excited! LOL JK
Yes, that was Jane’s post.
I would like to comment on it though. Firstly, I’m 44 and I remember clearly our teachers walking us through the cafiteria where the voting booths were and explaining what it was all about. I also remember voting in school, a mock vote to see who would win. For the most part kids voted for whoever their parents were voting for. It is part of our history, government etc… and children should be exposed to the process. I don’t think it is possible for them not to sense partisanship.
I don’t really care about the little ones singing for a private school, off school grounds and with parental permission.
In contrast, I think the military flavor (the way they are dressed and and their formation, movements etc…)of the teens video, is what is making it seem controversial. I have to say though, young black men for the most part need to know they can succeed.
That being said, pride for your country, race, even gender is a good thing, it gives one a sense of belonging. I think them celebrating the breaking of the glass ceiling of sorts is wonderful. The issue of it being in school, is what is questionable.
There has to be much more to the story though, not just that video.
I think the more telling moment race wise today, was when Joy made the comment about the male dancer in the picture turning white or something like that, and Sherri replied, “You had to say that!” Sherri wasn’t too happy and she was right. props to sherri for bringing up the board that barack obama and william ayers served on together and how another board member supports mccain…i think sherri is starting to see elisabeth’s true colors…whether we like it or not racism does exist in this country and this election is proving that most of it is based on fear and ignorance…if there were videos of schoolchildren campaigning for john mccain would elisabeth have been so quick to condemn them…btw was it ever made clear whether these kids were doing the videos because they wanted to or because they had to?

I didn’t mean to exclude whites because they are a people of color as well. You are right. Its just that it has always been a given that if you are referring to someone other that whites you state the ethnic background otherwise it is assumed you are white. It IS sad because when I see my friends I see their personality and how they make me feel first and how they getting through life. I’m like Obama, I have a little pit of everything in me and can’t truly talk about any ethnic group without talking about myself and family. And I think its kept me honest in dealing with people and teaching my kids to know it takes it all kinds to make the world go round. As far as Oriental vs Asian, you are right again. My daughter is always correcting me on that. (smile)
October 9th, 2008 at 2:30 pm
June,
Your comment:
“we would be mandated to supply health insurance to 2 kids (20 somethings.)”
That is incorrect. Twenty somethings are not considered children in the Obama plan. They are considered young adults.
“My husband is a small contractor, we have a few subs (responsible for their own taxes,) and a couple newbies/apprentices.”
Subs are not employees. Therefore, you will not be required to provide health benefits. In addition, large company’s are the ones who will be required to contribute to the national plan. Since your husband owns a small company, he doesn’t have to worry about that.
October 9th, 2008 at 2:31 pm
Wow! The message in the drill video seems to have gone over the panelists head today. It wasn’t about politics. It was about the fact that Obama has become a positive role model for those young men. They didn’t say “I’m voting for Obama.”
Like it or not, Obama has managed to tap into our young people, like no other politician has since JFK. That’s what I got from the video. That’s what I see in my family and in my town.
The young people seem to want to look to the future, while the old people are stuck in the past. Talking about things that happened 40 years ago and other nonsense. They know that their futures are at stake, that’s why they have embraced Obama in record numbers.
October 9th, 2008 at 2:45 pm
Rainlillie, i totally get your JFK reference…i’ve been saying for months Obama is this generations JFK…Obama inspires people to be one of “the best and the brightest”(remember that quote)it seems to me that too many young people today aspire to be a reality show contestant (eh springs to mind) but maybe people looking at Obama might think i can strive to be better
October 9th, 2008 at 2:50 pm
As far as the race issue in regards to Jane, and Julianne, I believe it truly depends on where you are from and where you are living. Also who your circle of friends are, and how you communicate among each other. Being white, and having a very diverse background, it is used as I noted above. In addition, most people will describe the person as who they are; white, black/African American, Asian, Russian, German, Mexican, and so on. It is not to say that white people are not a color, but it is just that people don’t see it as such. My husband is black, and we have these discussions all the time, and it really depends on where you are from geographically speaking. I am from the Midwest, and now living in the south…worlds apart in how they view things!!
October 9th, 2008 at 2:53 pm
Wow, today was really interesting. They actually - discussed - the issues instead of overtalking and EH shrieking over them. So for all the people that post about how anything EH says we jump on? Today’s show was exactly my point - that it is not what she says - it is how she says it. Today we could calmly hear her points and then the others could counter with theirs. That I have no problem with even though I profoundly disagree with her, she has a right to her opinion. The rhetoric makes me crazy and as long as the others can make their point I am fine, because like it or not, a lot of people agree with her misinformation or misinterpretation.
Although, I do agree that people’s pasts make a difference so I don’t appreciate when Whoopi brushes off EH to say that’s in the past no one cares.
Sarah Palin SPOKE at an AIP rally and is MARRIED to a guy who was a member (who incidentally only withdrew as a member when she became an elected official). A guy who also sits in on her govt business meetings and is currently under subpoena for using undue influence to get a govt employee to fire Palin’s ex-brother-in-law.
Obama never spoke at a Weatherman rally he served on a board with an ex-Weatherman who is widely respected now, and as Sherri thankfully pointed out many, many other prominent people associate with Ayers including a major donor of McCain’s.
So if EH is going to complain about association…
What I REALLY want one of the ladies to pin her down on is how she has vilified Clinton for being unfaithful but thinks McCain walks on water. Now really, McCain disposing of his first wife because she was disabled and had a colostomy bag and trading up for a trophy wife who would finance his ambitions is more reprehensible to me.

“The young people seem to want to look to the future, while the old people are stuck in the past.”
That reminds me of the following:
To move forward, put the gear in D
To go backwards, shift to R

OMG what a good point Christine #28. Is McCain trying to turn Iraq into his do-over in Vietnam?
Florida Sheriff Mike Scott slams Barack Hussein Obama!
Stupid EH said McCain doesn’t condone the ‘rhetoric.’ Pah-LEEZ Sh*tty Bitty.
Twice in Three days Obama’s middle name has been used by McCain pre-rally speakers and we’re suppose to believe that was just coincidence? As Lajet said, the Sheriff is now under investigation. Both men suddenly felt the need to call out Obama’s middle name (one most of us never knew), within an hour of McCain or Palin arriving (distancing themselves from the crime scene). And all this within days of McCain announcing he was going to go NEGATIVE on Obama. SURE McCain condemns it. Sure he does.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KlaCkLmEs4k
Sheriff Michael Joseph Scott’s statement (What an a$$):
Following the political event on Monday of this week, I have employed my usual and consistent practice of full accessibility to print, radio, and television media, as well as the general public. As always, my support staff in our Public Information Office has been equally accessible and accommodating. Understanding the interest and attention given my speech during the rally, I am submitting this release in advance of what is seemingly an insatiable appetite for continued discussion and debate over the matter. I have determined that there are a few primary points to address in this release as my final communication, and I have directed our Public Information Office to disengage with you on this topic until further advised. I have tried to make the points clear for your anticipated continuation of coverage.
· Everyone seems to agree on the underlying issue…my mention of a Presidential candidate’s full, legal name of record. There were no accusations, innuendos, untruths, or malicious words before or after the candidate’s name; although many others have made inflammatory statements about the candidate’s character, etc. I did not change my tone or otherwise punctuate or repeat the name with any verbal or physical emphasis.
· “Why” did I use the Candidate’s full, legal name of record? Despite varying inferences, interpretations, opinions, and extrapolations; the answer is because I wanted to, much like I wanted to voice my support for the Barron Collier Marching Band.
· The issue of my status as an elected official participating in a political rally has been raised along with the suggestion that this somehow clouds my representation of all constituents. I have not heard similar concern over the many other elected officials that day and everyday engaging in the same activities across our state and country. For example – Governor Crist is the Governor of all Florida’s people and his support of the Republican ticket in no way implies diminished concern for anyone opposing his political choice. Likewise, my political choices against the backdrop of my proven record of service, in no way suggest diminished concern for any individual or group.
· The issue of my appearance at the rally in uniform has been raised. It is noteworthy that I recently completed my primary campaign and continue my general campaign in the same uniform. My practice has been to wear the uniform at all times and as is undisputed, I am on duty 24/7 and 365. It is also noteworthy that I joined my fellow Florida Sheriffs in Tampa very recently for a political rally…all were in full uniform. At no time during this week’s rally did I mention the agency I represent; however, I was introduced by my official title. Given the introduction and my widespread name and face recognition in this area, I am satisfied that my apparel is irrelevant and the same reactions would have resulted had I been wearing a suit and tie.
· The issue of the NAACP and Coalition for Justice instigating the “race card” and somehow deciding that my political choice and/or use of a candidate’s full, legal name of record makes me a racist flies in the face of reason. The strong support these groups have always provided me is rooted in my tireless efforts to work equally hard for all of Lee County. I delivered the Dunbar Community Policing Office and shocked business owners along MLK Jr. Blvd. by regularly stopping in to say hello during my first term as Sheriff. If their support is so shallow as to wane over one (1) word that was legal, accurate, and void of supporting malice beyond dispute, then I will respectfully move on without their political support and without change to my loyalty to them or their constituents.
· Finally, the complaint made to Federal authorities relative to the first four (4) items listed above. Much as when our agency or yours is called with accusations of wrongdoing, we receive the concern and begin an initial inquiry to determine if further investigation is warranted. I have not been contacted by any authority at this point and am completely unaware of any rules or regulations violated. If “elected officials” are governed by the Hatch Act or similar laws governing political activity…I refer you back to item three (3) above and the fact that everyday and nearly around the clock across our country, elected officials are engaged in political activities. In short, I expect to be fully cleared of any wrongdoing.

Elisabeth sat on a panel that interviewed Barack Obama. She did it for her job. Is she therefore guilty by association of hanging out with “friends of terrorists”?
I mean wouldn’t she be so offended by him, his “connections”, that she’d refuse to sit on that panel with him?
That is how stupid this has all become.

BG & EH - The people who watch The View are not watching to get a regurgitation of Fox. If so, they’ll watch Fox. Fox is not/should not be at the table at an ABC show.
October 9th, 2008 at 4:28 pm
Acts of desperation!!! The repubs can’t talk about the economic or Iraq issues because they created them. McCain trys to create a buy out for displaced homeowners that’s already in the 700,000.000 bailout but makes it a 100% payoff charged to the taxpayers. That’s his answer to the economic crisis? As for the name Hussein…King Hussein of Jordan was one of our greatest allies and a really good leader. Let’s not let the Republican machine, ie Rove, Cheney and Schmidt turn this election into a talk about lies and trivia. That’s what they’re trying to do. We can’t let McCain do to Obama, what the Republican party did to Dukakis, Gore and Kerry and what they tried to do to Clinton.
October 9th, 2008 at 4:42 pm
The only reason the McLames went on Fox to
say they “DO NOT CONDONE” such a comment that was made about Obama at their rally was to cover their “ASSES” after the fact. They
should have given recognition to the assult when it happend. Like everything thing else lately they feed on negativaty.. they are
called “bottom feeders”.
October 9th, 2008 at 4:51 pm
Before I read everyone’s posts and hear all the jaded remarks I just want to say this.
Today was a really good show during Hot Topics. There was very few interruptions, EH got to finish all of her points before she was corrected. Instead of just telling her she was wrong, she was told whose board that they both sat on and who she supports…she was told about AIG… she was told how Cindy McCain was misleading about the vote to “defund the troops” and how McCain made the same vote on a bill with timelines.
I bring all of this up because I suggested a couple of days ago that EH should be allowed to finish speaking before they correct her… and today they did…. so I only have 1 thing to say about all of it….

That’s why they took turns today.

I can’t believe they let Star Jones go for being a bridezilla…
That isnt why she left. They didnt feel comfortable lying for her about her weight loss. Star didnt want her surgery to become public. She wanted to go on record that her weight loss was because of exercise and diet. When she was told that they wouldnt lie for her she threw a fit. That was the beginning of the end.

I dont know about your business, but the way I understand it. You would only see a tax increase if you make over $250,000. That is after expenses because most businesses are allowed to reduce their income with deductions from their business.
When you start making over 250K a year profit you stop being a “small business”
October 9th, 2008 at 5:26 pm
Actually, EH didn’t rant like a rabid dog today. She entered the discussion in a reasonable way and was treated with respect because of it. Speaking of respect. I am beginning to think that Sherri’s preoccupation with hot guys, food and booze was all an act. She seems knowledgeable and succinct on the issues lately and it’s spontaneous, so Yay for Sherri!
I volunteered at Dem. headquarters today, calling independent voters to make sure they had gotten their mail-in ballots and had sent them in. Three of the older women that I talked to, said that they had been having a hard time making up their mind because they ‘weren’t sure’ about Obama, but lately with all the meanness and lies they had changed their mind. It was interesting because we were told to just say we were calling from ‘Moving AZ Forward’ amd wanted to make sure they had gotten their ballots and had mailed them in. We didn’t say anything about Obama or the Dems unless they offered information. Of course when they said they were voting for Obama, we talked about the issues that led them to their vote. It’s frightening tho’, I just talked to my educated, intelligent brother and he just mailed in his Repub. vote, so all my vote will do is cancel his out.
October 9th, 2008 at 5:32 pm
Sorry to clog up the blog, but one more thought….They deliberately incite these ‘whack jobs’ to this incindiary (spelling?) craziness. If they were worried about it or didn’t condone it they wouldn’t use the kind of lying rhetoric they spout! And these are Christian people?

The 250K rule is for income, not business revenue. Unless the business is an S corp. I highly doubt a contracting company would be an S corp. If it is, then June needs a new accountant.

We are a new PC socity and need to be mindful of that in public, even when using light-hearted humor as in Joy’s case.
I almost didnt comment on this but if I dont then Im falling into that same trap.
I hate when race is used as an excuse. When people say this or that shouldnt be said because of race…. this or that shouldnt be dont because of race…. This or that was said or done because of race…..
All of these comments continue to point out the difference of the races. Isnt that what we are trying to stop. Yes there is a difference and the differences should be applauded and not be the cause of separation.
There was a comment earlier that Asian was correct and Oriental was incorrect…… they are the same thing.
Personally, I think that more people are oppressed today not because of race but because of economics.
If u have the money u can… if u dont have the money u cant…… doesnt matter what your race is.
Im sure I have over simplified this, but if it is simple it points out the insanity better.

we are in the roofing business. Our business is set up as a sub chapter s (i think that is what my husband said) I was concerned about this too. If you set up your business like this the business makes no profit. All the profit goes to us and employees so we will only pay on it once. It would not be fail to pay tax twice.

Oriental is a rug. I think it’s a preference. Hispanics prefer to be called Latino, Cuban, Puerto Rican or Spanish.
I swear Roger, I still can’t find that video (looking this whole time). It was the unedited version WITH Sherri calling out McCain on his cheating on his first wife with Cindy. Maybe McCain’s people had it pulled!!!!!!!

Lajet #30 – I completely agree with you. I know exactly what McCain and his camp are doing.
This was rather harsh, and I don’t know how you came to this conclusion: “I’ll ignore the disingenous part of your post that suggests there was no ulterior, partisan, ugly motive behind using Obama’s middle name since it is IRRELEVANT.”
When I wrote, “What is in a name” I was merely sharing with anyone who might read it the real meaning behind his name (to distance him from Saddam). Further, it seems the Sheriff is being condemned by the local NAACP for his remarks which I hope will cost him his re-election.
I’ve always agreed with your posts. I don’t attack anyone but EH sympathizers who come out swinging first. ?

Kelly - I’m so very sorry, and I shoudl ahve known better. I msut admit - I responded to it as a troll trying to claim that McCain and Palin weren’t doing anything wrong, it was an honorable name, wink, wink nudge nudge.
It is, of course, an honorable name, and we agree, that’s not the message that is intended by McCain/Plain.
Again my sincere apologies. I guess I’m a little trigger happy these days. I need to do better.

After the fiasco on Wall Street today, it is time for the candidates to stop all the crap about Ayers, or Alaskan secession and concentrate on telling us what they are going to do to save our economy.
There are too many day to day important issues that need addressing. The Republicans seem to be running scared and grabbing at the flimsiest stories to attack Obama. I am glad the article in RS made it to the discussion for that reason. But it is time to stop, to discuss issues with clear and logical words. Our country is in trouble, people. And I just want someone to offer some solutions.

There goes Hasselbeck again, talking about wome’s bodies.
If she is not talking about breast feeding or breasts, she now adds in “one menstrual cycle away from the election.
Shes disgusting. We know she is female, maybe she is trying to convince herself.

Thanks to Roger and everyone else discussing small business income. Our concerns and our friends as well is income before expenses-this board says after. I’ve heard it the other way too.
As you can imagine 60%-70% of our incomeis spent on materials and other costs to complete the jobs.
Health Care Mandate: I do understand we don’t have to worry about the subs. I am concerned about our 2-20 somethings apprentices. It sounded to me like, if you have any employees, you will have to furnish them with a health care policy.
I’m going to try to get more info on the web about his plan and see if I can find something concrete.

A good one and so true.
There are so many issues to talk about and I love hearing Solutions such as Whoopi has proposed. (e.g. AIG give us our money back and reducing the interest on mortgage loans so that ordinary Americans can survive this economic crisis.) It would be so much more interesting than listening to Elisabeth blather on and on and on. We hear the same rant every single day. She offers nothing positive or proactive.
I am also fed up with EH’s references to female bodily functions. Distasteful.
October 10th, 2008 at 5:21 am
Random Musings.
I agree with you a 100 percent the issues are what’s most important. I think the Ayers thing isn’t important because Obama was only 8 years old when Ayers committed his crimes. Obama wasn’t a member of the Weeatherunderground.
Palin’s husband was a member of the AIP up until 2002. The group is really radical. This is scary, because Palin will be next in line if she’s elected and of course her husband will have access to her.
I posted a link to a radio program where an investigative reporter looked into the connection.

If Ayers is such a dangerous guy, then the administration at the college where he’s teaching, the students and their parents, should all be sent to GITMO. Intelligent people see that this is a smokescreen.
Palin is sleeping with a guy who belonged to a group who hates America, that’s a fact. You can’t have a closer connection than a husband and a wife.

Palin was often at the conventions of the AIP and even spoke on one or more occasions. As govenor, she supported this group. She wasn’t 8 years old when Joe Vogler made his statements. She is WELL AWARE of what this group stands for and she supported them. So much so, most of the members there assumed she was a member as well.
The founder has said (paraphrasing) …the flames of hell are frozen glaciers compared to my HATRED towards America (or American gov’t). Talk about terrorists!!!
