The View Recap November 18th, 2008: Jessica Lange and Mike Huckabee

by Winnie McCarthy

Today on The View, it was the four main hosts. The first topic was Sherri Shepherd’s weekend in Orlando for Super Soap Weekend. She has lost her voice a bit and Joy Behar said it was sexy and she was strangely attracted to her. Joy had lunch with Dustin Hoffman yesterday, but had to turn down a movie invitation with him because she had other commitments. Joy will be interviewing Alec Baldwin on Larry King Live on Monday. Elisabeth said that they are getting jealous of her relationship with Larry King.

The cover of The Advocate says “Gay is the new Black.” Whoopi said that some people are complaining about the comparison between gay rights and Black suffrage. Whoopi did not know what “suffrage” meant. {Whoopi: It means the right to vote.} Sherri said that Black people had to go through a lot with Jim Crow and lynching and risking death. Whoopi said that gay people were harmed, too, although not as many as Black people. Elisabeth said that they should be fighting for the rights and not the word “marriage.” She repeated her point that the people voted for this and not judges. Sherri repeated about churches not wanted to marry gay people and getting sued and Whoopi repeated that law prohibits that in California. (I really wish they would just stop repeating themselves.)

Elisabeth said that people are called bigots if they don’t support gay marriage. Whoopi said that is the American way to not like what others believe and they don’t have to like my beliefs. Elisabeth said that people should not protest churches, but should protest Barack Obama and Joe Biden because they do not support gay marriage. Whoopi pointed out that they were not the ones who gave all the money to the Prop 8 advertisements. Joy said that Obama and Biden support gay couples getting all the same rights. Whoopi said just because she believes one thing, doesn’t mean you have to. She said that people should not care what she calls her relationship. Elisabeth said it did not come down to money, it came down to people wanted to protect the institution of marriage. Joy asked Elisabeth how it would harm her marriage if she (Joy) married a woman. Elisabeth said that after the break she wanted to say something about Christians and Prop 8.

When they came back, though, they moved on to talk about Dancing with the Stars. It went on way too long. Then there was a completely unnecessary discussion of a former Bachelor contestant who got arrested. Then they talked about other reality stars who have been arrested. Whoopi said mockingly “Oh My God!” Sherri asked Elisabeth if she has pent up anger like the other reality stars mentioned. Elisabeth said that everyone has some pent up anger. Joy said, “especially post-election.” Elisabeth said that she just takes a long run everyday.

The next segment chronicled Sherri Shepherd’s trip to Super Soap weekend in Orlando this past weekend.

That is all the time I have for today’s recap.

Today’s scheduled guests are Mike Huckabee and Jessica Lange.

  1. berndoubt Says:

I feel like Charlie Brown trying to kick the football every time they address an important topic.

    Good grief!

  2. Roger from Ohio Says:

Why do they even bring up these issues if they arent gonna finish the convo? Im also gonna say something that hasnt been said…. I know this Prop 8 was only in California, but now that it passed, we are hearing all about it and now it is being protested…. where were all the protests and the national news coverage BEFORE the election took place?

Now that prop 8 passed they are all up in arms…. where was the national outrage when a ballot initiative was put up to a vote that took away some Americans rights?

  3. Lopez Says:

Gays will have the right to marry. Time is on their side.

Straights are permitted to marry without a religious ceremony. Gays will be able to as well.

  4. susieq Says:

I think the reason Prop 8 in California wasn’t talked alot about before the election is because I think people thought it wouldn’t pass.

I wish Elisabeth would stop saying people are against gay marriage because of the use of the word marriage. That is a stupid argument. People use the word marriage to describe all kinds of things. I have heard chefs say “it’s a marriage of garlic and onion” or whatever. And another thing, how does gay marriage weaken the institution of marriage? I applaud Whoopie for continuing to speak her support of the issue. I think Sherri is starting to come around.

Joy is going to be guest hosting Larry King again next Monday. I wonder if Elisabeth ever wonders why she isn’t asked to that.

  5. Vickie Says:

#4 susieq said, “…I applaud Whoopie for continuing to speak her support of the issue. I think Sherri is starting to come around…” How much of a victory will it be if Sherri comes around? She had no core opinion on anything; easily persuaded to either side.

  6. red Says:

another point that Elisabeth continues to argue is that the majority of people in California voted yes on proposition 8 because they were annoyed that those 4 judges made the decision for everyone beforehand. If that is the case, then they are just voting for spite without thinking about the consequences? This is just stupid.

  7. caty Says:

    Susieq,
Will you attend the “marriage” of EH’s brain and mouth, should that ever occur?!? LOL LOL

  8. Tim Says:

Elizabeth is the least intelligent bigot on television. I can’t watch this show anymore. I am organizing anyone I know to boycott this show until they replace that stupid bitch with a credible co-host. Eating bugs on survivor does not qualify her to give her “view” on matters that she obviously does not understand.

  9. susieq Says:

Caty, I have already attended the divorce of Elisabeth’s mouth and intelligent debate.

  10. Vegas Says:

The Mike Huckabee interview was good. He seems so nice and down to earth. I loved how Joy told him ‘you are my favorite Republican!
Elisabeth thinks she is the Republican sweetheart and yet when Huckabee came out he kissed Joy and Whoopi but not Elisabeth. She looked so annoyed.

  11. Lopez Says:

Huckabee more dangerous than Palin. He shares her views AND he can put two sentences together.

    I don’t heart Huckabee.

  12. Kelly Says:

    #7 & #8

And I attended her revirgination Bar Mitzvah!

Video of the elderly abuse in California over Prop 8.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rDHL9NZ1lQQ

Vegas: Mike Huckabee had me - UNTIL he spoke against Gay marriage using the same lame hidden bigotry excuse: definition of marriage…judges shouldn’t have intervened…blah blah.

He may not be a religions nut, but he sounds like a member of the religious right.

  13. Rachel Anna Says:

The whole defense of the word “marriage” by Haseelbeck is ridiculous. Any straight couple can go to a courthouse and get married. Marriage is also a legal term, not just a religious one. The precedent is there. Also, I personally believe that the “radical judges decided this” argument is just a front for bigotry. EH doesn’t want to admit that she’s a bigot, but guess what little Donatella Versace, we already know that you are…

  14. Lopez Says:

Huckabee is a religious nut. He wants to change the constitution to reflect God’s standards.

  15. Kelly Says:

#12 It’s veiled bigotry, plain and simple.

Why would anyone care…so long as they pay taxes and are law-abiding citizens, who are they to say? (By law-abiding, I mean just laws – I wholly support civil disobedience against unjust laws.)

  16. Roger from Ohio Says:

    #11 Kelly–

Mike Huckabee had me - UNTIL

He lost me when he said that the constitution needs to be changed so it is more like the bible.

Here is the link to the video if u doubt it.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3yG_8CigCCc

or just google “Huckabee change the constitution so it is more like the bible”

  17. Vegas Says:

Today when Whoopi mentioned that loser Mary Delgado from The Bachelor show a few seasons back getting arrested for the second time, I thought it was ironic how after Whoopi threw it over to Elisabeth to continue telling the story, (because she is such a fan of that show) both Sherri and Joy asked Elisabeth ‘what is it with you reality show people you have so much pent up aggression’ and the look on Elisabeths face was priceless. Not only that but the audience was laughing at her too. After she got over the shock of them wording that question to her she just sarcastically put her arms up and said how maybe we will get to see her in handcuffs soon’.
I took what Sherri and Joy said as personal zingers intentionally meant to belittle Elisabeths integrity. They made it a point to say that she is a ‘reality show person. In other words, get off your high horse, Lizzie.

  18. Kelly Says:

I don’t know Huckabee - except what I saw today. I seriously don’t know a thing about him, nor do I doubt you Rog or Lopez. Why would I? Why would Joy say he’s her favorite?

Anyone who tries to ingrain religion into government should be removed from office.

The religious right have proven themselves to be a serious threat to democracy as seen in the last 8 years. The extreme religious right have become domestic terrorist, now raising their children to hate and die for the gospel, and that seems no different to me than the KKK.

And anyone who wants to challenge me on that, let’s not forget how easily TLB and the Republicans threw that word around.

  19. Lopez Says:

IMO, Joy said that because Huckabee has good comedic timing. Most all comedians say Huckabee should give up politics and join them on the road.

  20. Erika Says:

“Elisabeth said that people are called bigots if they don’t support gay marriage.”

And???? What should we call them? Haters?

  21. Kelly Says:

#18 - I wish he would. Palin should go into Showbiz too - and leave Politics to the centrist.

Just watched the Huckabee video – he is now on my radar and he is a danger.

  22. berndoubt Says:

I would love to go to a barbecue with Mike Huckabee. I wouldn’t mind him being my pastor if I was a Baptist or whatever. I DO NOT WANT HIM AS MY PRESIDENT! I need my president to believe in evolution.

    http://blogcritics.org/archives/2007/05/04/051228.php

  23. berndoubt Says:

Not supporting the right, I repeat, THE RIGHT to marry for homosexuals is exactly the same as not allowing black children to attend white schools. I hate that I have to keep quoting Whoopi, but she’s right. If you don’t support an abortion, don’t have one. If you don’t believe in gay marriage, don’t marry a gay person. Yes, not supporting the rights of a minority makes you a bigot, whether or not you attend your precious little church every Sunday. It’s just that easy.

Someone needs to let Bitsy Hasselgays finish her statement about what Christians think of gay marriage. And answer the question that Joy asked, you chicken-shit, how does gay marriage affect your marriage? It sure as hell doesn’t affect mine!

  24. Lopez Says:

Why wouldn’t you need a pastor who believes in evolution? Or believe in the right for gays to marry? Why is a pastor held to a lower intellectual standard?

  25. Kelly Says:

#16 – ah yes Vegas. How soon they forget where they came from.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KuLzKjcttKE

Give the Blonde Imp a Pink Slip

  26. berndoubt Says:

#23, You’re right, Lopez, I do hold a religious leader to a higher standard than that! O.K. Just the barbecue. Thanks for helping me see the error of my ways.

FOOTNOTE: See, Bitsy, that’s how it’s done. You listen to other people, you reconsider your view, and sometimes you change your mind. It’s so easy. Try it sometime!

  27. Celia Says:

It is shameful that people won’t support same sex marriage.
Everyone should have the right to marry whomever they want.

I am so sick of these hateful right wing religious people who call themselves Christians. They are not Christians.

Christians are people who do not spew hatred. Christian people love and accept people for who they are.

Sherri and EH make me so angry with their holier-than-thou attitudes. Those extreme Christians forget they will also too be judged for their actions come judgement day.

  28. Rachel Anna Says:

Barbara, Sherri, Whoopi, Joy…or any of their assistants/ managers/agents/friends… if you guys log onto this blog, please listen to us. Fire Elisabeth Hasselbeck. It’s what your viewers want.

Heck, Matenopolous was a rocket scientist compared to Hasselbeck. And since it was just announced that the former is getting a divorce, maybe she will want to move back to New York for her old job and a fresh start… just a suggestion…

  29. Lopez Says:

Well, Huckabee makes a mean BBQ

    http://www.groundreport.com/US/Is-Huckabee-An-Expert-On-BBQ

    Enjoy, berndoubt.

  30. NOTIMPRESSED Says:

Who gives a shit what Christians think of gay-marriages anymore than non-Christians.
They need to keep their noses out of other
peoples affairs. It’s nobody’s business who
has a relationship/marriage with who, for what reason or why.
Personal relationships are just that, personal. The churches and lawmakers and politicians need to stay out of people’s personal lives.

  31. Kelly Says:

Change is in the air - I heart it!!!

  32. Stacee Says:

RECAP: “Elisabeth said it did not come down to money, it came down to people wanted to protect the institution of marriage. ”

I really wish instead of dancing around, Bits just says what she means. Does she want marriage protected, or to be protected against gay marriage?

If the church wants to protect the institution of marriage, why don’t they picket divorce courts?

  33. Rachel Anna Says:

I’d like to start a daily sub-topic about this show as long as the idiocy continues….

It’s called: Watching the Women Lose their Brains Completely. Today’s points of discussion:

    1. No one clarifying or understanding the definition of suffrage.

    2. Elisabeth trying to explain how gays saying “Gay is the new Black” belittles the Civil Rights movement. In one extraordinarily un-loquacious utterance, this woman proved that she is bigoted, a terrible speaker, an unsympathetic person, and an overall meretricious human being.

Everyone knows how I feel about Hasselhoff, but her dangerous, uneducated stupors are really starting to insult everything that’s good about human beings.

When they hired this woman, and now continue with her without reprimand, it was one step back for The View, one HUGE step back for womankind.

Let me in a boxing ring with this woman! LOL! Then again, I could probably just kick her bum with words. Not that she’d understand any words beyond a middle school vocabulary…

  34. berndoubt Says:

Uh, s’cuse me, one more thing (that was my Columbo impersonation, if you never saw Peter Falk’s detective show, do yourselves a favor and find some on youTube).

Upon rewatching Huckleberry HomoHater, he did say that Sarah Palin re-energized the base. That’s pathetic.

#29, NOTIMPRESSED, I give you an ironic, albeit sincere “Amen!”

  35. Stacee Says:

RECAP: “Whoopi did not know what “suffrage” meant.”

Someone PLEASE tell me she was joking.

  36. berndoubt Says:

#32, This is what I love about this place. I learned a new word today, compliments of Rachel Anna. Now I want to know which of the definitions you intended, since they both apply.

meretricious1: of or relating to a prostitute : having the nature of prostitution 2 a: tawdrily and falsely attractive b: superficially significant : pretentious

  37. Rachel Anna Says:

Stacee, apparently none of them did. No one chimed in on this point. AGAIN, DOES ANYONE DO ANY RESEARCH FOR THIS SHOW? Don’t they have little mics in their ear for when they make mistakes?

  38. Rachel Anna Says:

    LOL berndoubt! ALL OF THEM!

  39. Stacee Says:

    Rachel Anna Says:
“Stacee, apparently none of them did. No one chimed in on this point. AGAIN, DOES ANYONE DO ANY RESEARCH FOR THIS SHOW? ”

    MY RESPONSE: Exactly!!!
What is the criteria for getting a job as a host? A pulse? the mirror to the mouth/ breath test? Or is the ability to just show up for work for 2 hours or so, get hair/makeup, recite a few lines, read cue cards, relay spoon fed topics and then go home?

    Wow. Just wow.

And I’m sorry, but I’d be too embarrassed to say I did not know what sufferage meant. On live tv no less. Whoopi SHOULD know what that word means. That she doesn’t is an absolute shame.

  40. Roger from Ohio Says:

In the name of discussion and fairness Im gonna pass this along….

Just to be clear…… these arent my views, these were part of a discussion that I had.

If the country allows “sin” then god will take his hand off of this country and it will go down hill.
So gay marriage needs to be banned because homosexuality is a sin…. and if we allow sin (as a country) we will lose favor from god.

This person also said that Truman beat Dewey, because he called and congratulated Israel for becoming a country.(which gained god’s favor) He went to bed behind and woke up President.

I cant prove it wrong so I cant argue it….. I dont believe it, but I cant prove any of it.

  41. berndoubt Says:

My favorite site answers all my questions, and it ain’t wikipedia:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3dPF0SGh_PQ

  42. Jasmine 46 Says:

    Three Questions:

    1. Why is the government deciding who should get married???

    2. Is it possible that ALL FOUR of these women did not know the definition of suffrage?

    3. If the point of this program is to express the views of different kinds of women (even dumb ones), why not go ahead and express them instead of CHANGING THE SUBJECT over the commercial break? Boy, I hate that.

  43. berndoubt Says:

#39, That sure sounds like the mean, Old Testament God to me, Roger. When Jesus got here, and the “Christians” should know this, he said let he who is without sin cast the first stone. So, quit casting stones, you hypocrites, and answer to God for your life. I’ll answer for mine.

  44. Roger from Ohio Says:

    #33 berndoubt–

Upon rewatching Huckleberry HomoHater, he did say that Sarah Palin re-energized the base. That’s pathetic.

She did re-energize the base…for about 4 days… then they saw she had no substance and became a laughing stock…. but the base never left her…. another reason why they lost.

Oh… just to be clear… Huckabee was a pastor before he became a politician. A very scary man.

  45. berndoubt Says:

Base, as in appealed to the basest instincts, like hate.

  46. Sandy Says:

I saw the show today, and for the most part, I thought it was okay.
I take a break in the morning, (when I’m home) with a hot cup of coffee, and the View. So I try to enjoy it. Usually i do.

Prop 8, I didn’t hear the host say anything that they already had not said. Except for perhaps about the cover of the Advocate. So I’m not sure why they discussed it.

    # 3 Lopez, I agree.
It takes time for some to accept certain changes. Especially when you have religious views involved.

I enjoyed Jessica Lange, and seeing a few of her photo’s. I thought they were pretty good.

I enjoyed Mike Huckabee. I like him very much. He has a great personality.
I will add, I did not like him as a political candidate, basically because he brought religion into politics.
That doesn’t affect how I feel about him as a person.

  47. Sandy Says:

    # 39 Roger,
I’m confident that I could prove this person wrong.
It would take some time, and a willingness to learn what the Bible really teaches.

I’m not saying that the Bible doesn’t speak negatively about homosexuality. It does.
However one, (and just one) thing I would argue that God does not have favor as a country, but as a person.

  48. Roger from Ohio Says:

actually Sandy, I dont think u could “prove this person wrong”

When it comes to the bible, facts dont count, faith does… There is no way anyone can prove the bible right or wrong, but it is believed on “faith”

The problem comes when anyone wants to change your rights because of their faith.

  49. diane10 Says:

    Someone request a TROLL?

One day the Thomas Beaties of the world will have to explain to their children that daddy carried them in his womb. I call that Part II to the psychological breakdown of our children and how they view a normal relationship. Part I is same sex marriage and children. So, what’s next America? Equal rights for livestock? Centaurs? Hey, we cannot discriminate! Equal rights for all!! Let the good times roll, YL’s.

  50. Danielle Says:

    #45 Sandy-

I agree as well that God does not have favor with a country, but a person. If that was true we sure would not be in his favor. I know alot of people find this hard to believe but America has not been the most true and equal nation. Just think of the history.

Also, as a Christian I can only hope and pray for others, I can’t make them do anything, and I think alot of the religious right feel they need to MAKE people believe like them. God gives us a choice, and they don’t. That’s why there needs to be separation from church and state. If we let them have their way we will be going down a very slippery slope. Plus, if they want to get involved in politics like they are, they need to pay taxes. And I’m a Christian saying that, because it’s wrong.

  51. Rachel Anna Says:

Diane10, do you know any gay people?

About Thomas Beatie - What’s the big deal? I can’t speak for your children Diane10, but I think my kids will be smart enough to understand a simple explanation.

“Some people feel they’re not born in the right bodies. So sometimes they change their parts, which the miracle of medicine allows us to do. And in this case, this loving couple wanted so badly to bring a child like you into this world that this man decided not to change ALL of his parts so that he could make a baby. And this loving couple did. And they love that child as much as I love you. There are all kinds of different families, and no one kind is better than another. The important thing is love. Always love.”

  52. Roger from Ohio Says:

    really diane10?

Divorce doesnt have a large part in the psychological breakdown of our children and how they view a normal relationship

what about “religious or teacher pedophilia”?

Im sure there are lots others.

Blaming others for the failing of ones own parenting skils is where the problem begins. If your child asks you a question that you cant answer… maybe it is time for you to improve your own knowledge base…. remember…. what you tell your own children they will try and confirm it somewhere else….. so be sure you are telling them correct things if u want to be believed later.

  53. wendee Says:

    Diane10-

At one point blacks were considered animals and properties of whites in this country. “Witches” were burned at the stake, Native Americans were savages, and women were subservient to men. Thankfully, this country has evolved to realize the absurdity of these outlooks, and these people earned more equal rights. So why should homosexuality be any different?

  54. susieq Says:

When Huckabee was asked about the Arkansas proposition about gays not being allowed to adopt he said it was because children should be raised by a mother and a father. So does that mean a straight single mother or father can’t adopt in Arkansas?

Sherri told Huckabee he was her candidate until he dropped out. So she goes from a conservative non-evolution believing Republican to a progressive intelligent Democrat. I go back to my original theory about Sherri voting. She wanted to vote for the winner no matter who it was.

  55. Vickie Says:

#49 LOL!!! Can you spell “M-O-N-E-Y” Mommy?

  56. wendee Says:

    Exactly Roger,

There are a numerous amount of things that have caused the breakdown of our children….. video games, television, fast food, parents having to work long hours to make ends meet, the internet, etc. etc……. but with this breakdown comes a lot of new opportunities for children as well, to become more worldly then we are. It is all about age appropriate discussions and exposure.

  57. diane10 Says:

I don’t think about lust going on between two people of the same sex. I have three children and three grandchildren. I think about the children and how they are being influenced in a very small and abnormal world.

Don’t bring children into it. It’s wrong. Self serving individuals who want to “have it all” aren’t considering what they are doing to the minds of little children. They are only trying to fulfill a need without thinking of the consequences. Children can’t handle truths like these.

And, by the way, yes, I know some gay people…and they aren’t married and they don’t have children and they don’t throw it in anyone’s face. They know they are “different.”

Can you see gay parents taking their children to a “Gay Pride” demonstration in Washington, DC? And you see nothing wrong with that?

    Pleeezzz..

  58. Sandy Says:

    # 48 Danielle.
    agreed :)

    # 46 Roger,

If this person has faith in the word of the Bible, believes it to be true. Then, not me, but the Bible I would prove to him that he is wrong.
In regards to God loosing favor with the U.S. if we should allow gays to marry.
God does not favor a country, or a government.

  59. susieq Says:

Children raised by loving gay or transgendered parents will grow up to be just fine…Children raised by hateful bigots are another matter.

Anyone remember the two little girls that made videos singing white supremacy songs? Their was a custody battle between parents but I don’t know the outcome.

  60. Rachel Anna Says:

Diane10, I’m trying to understand how anyone could be filled with such hate. We are all God’s children, and we are all capable of love and pain. We cannot control much of what happens in our lives, but when you can make the simple choice to choose love over pain and hatred, why is that so difficult?

But let me propose this: What if you’re wrong about your views? What if, because the Bible is a fallible, man-influenced document, many of its parts are wrong. What if God is upset that some jerk decided to add a few things in there during his translation?

What if, when you get to your Maker, we find out that he is a loving God and wants goodness and kindness between and for all of his children? And you, instead, have chosen hate. I fear, Diane10, that you shall be Damned.

  61. susieq Says:

Diane10, you think taking kids to a Gay Pride Rally is wrong? How bout the KKK members that had hoods on carrying babies with hoods on while they burned crosses?

  62. wendee Says:

    Diane10-

As there are straight people who allow their children to do too much, see too much etc, I am sure there are some gays who may allow their children to exposed to certain things. However, that does not mean the majority of them would. Why is it assumed that gays cannot be loving, reasonable, appropriate parents simply because they are gay?

  63. diane10 Says:

Some gays might be loving and caring but what about the idiots and the weirdos out there? Straight weirdos and gay weirdos…I’m saying we must protect the young children from being raised in an environment that is abnormal. Do we want to promote being gay?

Sad, to me, the way young liberals think. You can stomp all over your Bibles and call Christians idiots…I don’t care. But you need to start thinking about the mental health of young impressive children.

  64. Rachel Anna Says:

And Diane10, you need to start thinking about the fact that God can see into the dark hearts of hatred. I’m concerned for your Soul…

  65. Roger from Ohio Says:

    #55 Diane10–

Don’t bring children into it. It’s wrong. Self serving individuals who want to “have it all” aren’t considering what they are doing to the minds of little children. They are only trying to fulfill a need without thinking of the consequences. Children can’t handle truths like these.

I really dont understand your parenting skills Diane…. did you tell your “little children” what you and your husband were doing in your bedroom? I doubt you did… so why do u think that you would have to tell them about a gay couple?

Cant you understand a loving relationship without dirtying it up with sex?

Teaching children that families that are different than your family will grow up either hating others or hating you for lying to them.

you say “Children can’t handle truths like these” answer me this question…. if you were like most “christian” parents you told your child about Santa Clause, the Easter Bunny, and God….. Santa and the Bunny were lies….. why would they believe you about god?

I dont expect any answers from you Diane10…. I doubt you even believe what you say yourself….. so how would u believe me?

  66. wendee Says:

    Diane10-

I am a preschool/kindergarten teacher who has a lot of experience and education in dealing with young children. In my experience, kids are wide eyed and open minded, as long as things are explained to them appropriately. The bible mentions a lot of terrible things, such as the deadly plagues, rape, incest, etc. I would not expose my children to such issues, but I do expose her to the bible. It is ridiculous to assume children cannot handle things, but parents need to know how to do so without being judgmental.

  67. Roger from Ohio Says:

    Remember diane10—

98% of gay people were raised by straight parents…. maybe we should ban straight marriage…. obviously it causes children to become gay. /snark?

  68. wendee Says:

    But Roger….

It is only liberals who raise gay children, didn’t you know… Oh wait, Cheney has a gay daughter.

  69. Danielle Says:

    Diane10-

I am a very proud Christian and have been all of my life. The first time I encountered hateful Christians was at the age of 9 years old, when another girl my age told me I was going to hell, because I didn’t wear a dress everyday. She obviously was taught that by her parents, and of course, this is a very strict religion she happened to be born in, but it was the first time in my life that I was frightened by such a comment.

I ran home to my grandmother and told her what the girl said, and she told me that there will always be people that take in religion to promote their warped beliefs, mankind invents religion to do this, but Jesus is just Jesus he isn’t Protestant, Catholic, Mormon, Baptist, Methodist, etc. and that’s why we should only look to him and not people, as people are flawed. She also said if Jesus only had to worry about our clothing it would be a Hallelujah time. :-)

Let Jesus be the judge Diane10, that’s all I’m saying, we can’t do it, because we are all flawed. I hope you understand what I’m trying to say.

  70. joey Says:

I don’t need to say anything today because you are amazingly articulate people, and I agree with 99.9% of what all of you said (except for Diane10 with whom I totally disagree).

#49 Rachel Anna: you beat me to it! Well said…

  71. diane10 Says:

    THE CHILDREN…think about the children.

  72. diane10 Says:

Please don’t mistake “my passion” for hate. It isn’t about hate at all. I don’t care one way or the other if people are gay…it’s the environment that children will grow up in…and it will eventually break down what is “normal” in a relationship.

  73. Rachel Anna Says:

    Who defines what’s “normal?”

  74. wendee Says:

    Diane-

what about divorce? How does that affect children? What about children whose moms or dads died in Iraq? How does that affect children? And what exactly is “normal” in a relationship anyway?

  75. joey Says:

    #69 Diane 10

That’s precisely who we are thinking about.

  76. Rachel Anna Says:

And you don’t care if people are gay, but you don’t want them to have the same opportunities for love and life that you do? Oh, I’d say that means you care…

Boy, must be nice to be you up on that throne. Wait, isn’t there where Jesus is supposed to sit?

  77. Roger from Ohio Says:

Home school is the answer Diane10

if u send them to church they might be abused by church leaders

if u send them to school they might be abused by teachers

Keep your children tied up in a closet then they wont be in any danger and just might grow up to treat you that same way when u get too old to take care of yourself

see how dumb arguments get dumber Diane? My advice to you is give your children (grandchildren) more credit then you give yourself.

  78. diane10 Says:

Where will it all end, folks? What’s next for our children to have to digest? Who will their new role models be? In the next 10 to 15 years, it will probably be “cool” to be in a gay relationship especially to those people who aren’t capable of having a normal relationship with the opposite sex so that will willingly go “gay” to at least have something. Then they will bring children into the world.

It has been my extreme pleasure to voice my opinion exercising my freedom of speech. Remember…just because I don’t buy into the gay marriage crap doesn’t mean I’m a bad person. It simply means there are people in the world who don’t think the way you do. Quite a few people. So, go ahead and call us unintelligent, idiots, a bigots, fire them at us. I am proud not to think like you.

A marriage is between a man and a woman for obvious reasons. Look at Thomas Beatie. What will surface next?

  79. Roger from Ohio Says:

Here is another question that I doubt u will answer Diane10–

How will you handle it when you find out that one of your grandchildren are gay? will you stop loving that child? will your grandchild be forced to live his life in shame?

but u wont answer that…… I doubt that you believe what you say

  80. joey Says:

    #70 Diane10

Who is given the right to determine what is normal…it’s obvious to me that your definition is vastly different from mine.

  81. wendee Says:

and just because we are liberal doesn’t make us bad either.

  82. diane10 Says:

Do you consider your parents having a normal relationship? If so, I rest my case.

  83. Rachel Anna Says:

I will absolutely call you bigoted, Diane10. The same way I would’ve called racists racists and bigots a generation ago. Oh, and just because you may have numbers doesn’t mean the herd isn’t blind. The Nazis, anyone? The world is a changing, Diane 10. It’s getting better. It’s getting full of love and tolerance. Your grandchildren will live in a world which I will help shape. And I will damn well make sure that love prevails.

And Thomas Beatie seems like a loving loving human being. And extremely articulate, I might add. Maybe he could take Hasselbeck’s spot.

I would love for Thomas Beatie and his wife to babysit my children.

And PS - Being gay isn’t “cool” or in style. You are BORN GAY.

  84. Roger from Ohio Says:

what will surface next? maybe pedophile priests…. maybe government leaders looking for love in the mens room…. maybe teachers getting a little on the side with their students…. maybe a presidential candidate that cheated on his first wife then begged the religious right for their support and GETTING IT….. or how about his running mate… has 2 semi adult children…. one pregnant and the other went to the Army instead of jail because of drug charges….

All of those people are conservative people or putting it more clear Diane10…. YOUR PEOPLE….. you must be proud.

  85. joey Says:

    #80Diane10

If you mean that 50 years of bickering and being angry is normal…yup I guess they were.

  86. joey Says:

I find the whole “are gays born gay or do they choose the lifestyle” concept, very frustrating. I believe that they are born that way’ but even if it were a choice…who cares?

  87. Rachel Anna Says:

    Right on, Joey. I agree.

  88. June Says:

I’m commenting without having had time to read all the previous posts, I will though.

I just wanted to ask Roger, what he and Joy are doing tonight and tomorrow night that she is too busy for Dustin Hoffman? ;)

I have a funny story about him-he lived near me in CT when I lived there, very cool, down to earth man.

I also wanted to quickly comment on Whoopi’s appearent disdane for reality TV (Dancing With the Stars.) It has become a major genre of entertainment. Everytime she has to talk about it, she looks like she just smelled something bad. I personally don’t watch DWTS, but a large part of the View’s audience probably does. As well as the other big show, AI, Project Runway, etc… I think it makes her look really out of touch, when she looks so puzzeled talking about those shows/contesants.

  89. Roger from Ohio Says:

my theory about that is…. we are all born bi-sexual… it just depends on how strong those urges are on how we react to them.

but it is just a theory….. how can something like that be proven?

  90. Roger from Ohio Says:

    #86 June–

what he and Joy are doing tonight and tomorrow night that she is too busy for Dustin Hoffman?

I can deal with Steve…. but she knows if there were 2 I couldnt deal…… she wants me that bad…. bad enough to give up Dustin Hoffman.

I also wanted to quickly comment on Whoopi’s apparent disdain for reality TV

Actually, that is one redeeming value of Whoopi…. think about it like this…. if we “reward” these people with fame and stardom….. we wind up with people like Elisabeth.

  91. berndoubt Says:

#80, “Do you consider your parents having a normal relationship? If so, I rest my case.”

I was raised by two alcoholic, neglectful Catholics. Not a normal relationship by anyone’s standards, believe you me. I’ve just recently celebrated twenty wonderful, monogamous years and have two compassionate, kind teenagers. Oh, and my gay brother, he grew up in the same house where divorce was not even an option and dad had a regular job and mom stayed home with the nine of us.

So, diane10, try again. And maybe you should watch Saturday Night Live for Aunt Judy, because she does your pleeezzzz better than you.

  92. Rachel Anna Says:

June, re:the reality tv portion of your comment, I can understand where Whoopi is coming from. She has written, acted and thought her way into stardom. She just doesn’t want to see “entertainment” so dumbed down. But I agree with you that she’s alienated some of the audience.

Personally, I think DWTS and Project Runway are one thing - they actually require people to have talent — but things like Fear Factor and Don’t Forget the Lyrics really are contributing to the dumbing down of our society. I’m not saying that all scripted shows are “smart,” but they at least require a witty line or two. They require plot lines that twist, etc — there is some intelligence behind it. Hollywood writers, whatever you think about Hollywood, are generally some of the most educated people out there. They’re often Ivy Leaguers and/or with another profession first under their belt first. They’re people who have something to say.

Unfortunately, I do think EH is representative of the worst kind of fame. She lost on a silly game that required her to eat gross stuff and/or starve herself- and now she’s a voice of conservatism? And some Republicans treat her as a viable one? Not particularly smart or logical.

Survivor, I think, was an interesting psychological idea, but the way it was executed took any intelligence out of it.

  93. joey Says:

  95. joey Says:

Re: Reality TV programs…some I like, some not so much. Until recently I had very little time to watch TV and they were not high on my priority list. There are many that I do find astonishingly sexist and that I believe are damaging to women; you know, the ole’ women can’t get along, are b….y, are desperate for a man and are willing to behave like a lesser species to get one stuff. But some choose to go go on them and that’s their choice… I have a remote.

That said, I do enjoy “The Great Race”.

  96. berndoubt Says:

The thing I can’t stand about reality shows is that they pit everyone against each other and people fight as entertainment. I’d like a game where they win by cooperating.

  97. ShannonP Says:

I thought Joy’s comments on how she turned down Dustin Hoffman’s offers of seeing the movie together were kind of tacky and tasteless. He was so kind to make the offer and it should have remained private. She seemed to be glorifying herself at his expense. Maybe he wouldn’t even care, I just thought it lacked class.

  98. joey Says:

    #94 berndought:

I agree with you, I think that’s why I enjoy the Great Race, cuz while it is a competition the individual teams have to really cooperate to stand a chance at winning.

  99. ShannonP Says:

I agree with you Joey on the thoughts about Whoopi’s reaction to reality tv.
In her generation of acting and entertaining, you had to earn your success with lots of hard work. Not just going on some reality show and showing your beaver or eating a worm and becoming the next overnight success. Why give more attention to those that don’t really earn it?
I don’t blame her for not watching the shows. I do think she takes her facial expressions and mannerisms too far in her desire to get across just how lame she finds reality tv.

  100. Roger from Ohio Says:

    #93 joey–

That said, I do enjoy “The Great Race”.

I like that one too…. about the only one though…. I got an idea though…… maybe you and I should team up.. we might be the next “American Darlings” wouldnt that be fun…. we could wear “watching the veiw” t-shirts and such. hahahhaa

  101. Kelly Says:

    I haven’t read all the comment yet – CAN’T WAIT. (I’m secretly glad a troll showed-up  )

    Here’s a great read from berndoubt’s off-topic link; written by an 80-year-old.

    THE VIEW NEEDS GLASSES
    (Prop 8)
Margaret & Helen: Best Friends for Sixty Years and Counting…

Ignorance is bliss… unless we are talking about someone else’s ignorance. And in this case we are. I will be the first to admit that my talking about gay marriage - or gay anything - is like Sarah Palin musing on the global ramifications of power struggles in the Middle East. It will most likely be a Katie Couric moment but here we go…

If marriage is an institution supported by this country then it must be made available to all of its citizens according to the law. If however, it is strictly a religious institution then a constitutional amendment determining who can and cannot have access to it is sort of missing the point. Religious freedom except for people who are not religious is a mutually exclusive concept. And if we keep going down this path the concept of a Christ-like Christian will become an oxymoron. And speaking of moron…

I have had it with The View and I blame Barbara Walters. First she allows Elisabeth to be the voice of fear and war and then magically on Wednesday after the election all of it is immediately forgotten and forgiven. It is painfully obvious that Elisabeth’s opinions are not her own but rather the talking points being given to her to fit the part. OK. I don’t like it but I can excuse it because Elisabeth comes by her hate honestly. She knows exactly what she is doing and in her world being young, blonde and married to a football star gives her permission to be a bitch. What does she care? Her children will be able to buy their way out of any problem. By the way, Harold says she’s not married to the good football player… his brother is the good one. I wouldn’t know. I just know the football player who married Elisabeth went for a Hail Mary pass and ended up with just a pass to hell.

LOL,LOL…. and you young lady, knowwww what I’m talkin’ about. Now go to your room…

Thanks, but I think the credit for those ideas go to Rachel Anna and Roger. I forgot to put quotation marks around #91.

Sorry, Sorry Roger, I’m now into you for 2 sets of quotation marks and if you remember I promised you and berndought a couple of parentheses.

  103. Roger from Ohio Says:

    #94 berndoubt–

The thing I can’t stand about reality shows is that they pit everyone against each other and people fight as entertainment

I have that same argument with my mom and sister… my question to them (they never answer) is…. why do people that behave badly amuse you?

Shows like the nanny…. wife swap… they seem to me to be fake…. big brother… survivor… and the like… seems like the one that acts the worse is the one that gets the most attention… The person with the lease scruples is the one that wins it….

    seems insane to me honestly.

  104. joey Says:

Awww Roger, I’d love to but I couldn’t do that to Joy. Besides I’m Canadian and the “American Sweetheart” thing might not work for a cross-border, cross cultural team. But we can dream!!!

  105. Kelly Says:

If I said it once, I’ve said it a million times: We’ve become a nation that rewards bad behavior.

#99 Kelly, thanks you do amazing research…the gals on The View could learn something from you…I have.

  107. Roger from Ohio Says:

    dang it joey–

I would have worked…. maybe if Joy thought she had some competition, it might make her take notice… remember… Im a liberal, I accept all cultures….. even Canadian.

  108. Kelly Says:

Oh thanks joey - but I can’t take credit for berndoubt’s link (since she might still be here  !)

  109. Holly Says:

EH – Bill O called himself an “act” to which Stephen Colbert responded, “If you are, then what am I?” Rush cannot be held legally liable for his gross inaccuracies because he is an “entertainer.” Depending on when you happen to tune in, Hannity is or is not a journalist - take your pick. And these are your sources? These folks have all been marginalized along with Fox, and the country has moved on without you.

  110. Lala Says:

I haven’t read all the comments yet….but was shocked that EH, for once, encouraged WG to go to commercial break…just after EH tried to change the subject upon Joy asking her why if she “married” a female, would that affect her/her marriage(para-phrased)?? I thought that was an excellent question by Joy. And obviously one EH DID NOT want to answer.

And why when EH admits that gays should get the same civil rights but not marriage, did WG NOT explain that marriage brings addt’l rights that are not covered under a civil union.

I need to elevate my mind out of this show.

  111. berndoubt Says:

#106, I’m never very far, but I don’t care who gets the credit, just so we spread the wealth of knowledge!

In the spirit of Thanksgiving which is only a little over a week away, let me just say to those of you who add such thoughtful, insightful points to every discussion (and you know who you are):

    THANK YOU!

It really is fun to come here and shoot the $#!& with you!

  112. joey Says:

    #08

Lala, I couldn’t agree with you more. In Canada we have “Gay Marriage” and it does add benefits over civil marriage. The major concern for most gay people outside of a civil union is child custody. As I know it, with a civil union(in California)if the children are not biological to both and the biological parent dies, relatives can contest custody. Appalling…devastating to both child and parent. Cruel!!

Also what was not dealt with, is the fact that supreme court judges ruling based on the constitution of your country was overturned by a popular vote…so if enough of us agree we can bring back slavery, okay a holocaust, repeal suffrage for women, and just cuz we feel like it decide all the men must wear burkas.

    Don’t get me going…

  113. Roger from Ohio Says:

First– Joey…. just to be clear…. I look good in a burka…. but I wont tell u what I wear under it.

    Lala–

When EH wanted to go to break… I thought it was because she wanted to make a point but didnt have enough time…… when they came back…. nothing… My guess is that Bill Getty didnt want to offend the religious right so told them to move on.

  114. joey Says:

    Hey berndoubt

Thanksgiving in Canada is in October. That has always been a good thing for me because of the difference in holiday celebration dates; many of us cross-border types get to have the eating all day, turkey meal, luvin’friends thing twice a year. It’s a good thing…

Will you watch Rosie’s live variety show?

  115. mibi Says:

okay i dont really equate black struggles with gay struggles because while all stuggles have there similarities no struggles are the same. so gay is not exactly the new black. but it is a civil right issue imo.

yeah it strange that none of these ladies knew what suffrage is.

But I had a weird experience today a person I was with was told that a person she knew was gay. Her responce was really oh my I played board games with her she might like me. I think people will not be okay with gay marriage until theycan play board games with someone gay.

  116. ShannonP Says:

Kelly said “If I said it once, I’ve said it a million times: We’ve become a nation that rewards bad behavior.”

Completely true. I just saw how Diane Sawyer had “landed” the interview with the Spitzer hooker Dupre or whatever her name is. That is someone that needs more attention? With all the exciting things going on right now with the new President Elect and all the potential people that do good in this world that could be getting interviewed, Diane Sawyer “lands” a hooker. And people will tune in. It’s pathetic.

  117. berndoubt Says:

#114, Happy Belated Thanksgiving. Sorry I missed it, although I must confess my favorite Thanksgiving celebrations were over barbecued chicken and ribs. We’re not traditionalists about holidays in our house.

We’re so traditional in every other way, it’s ridiculous. In fact, that’s something I’d like to address to the lurking trolls. I have what may be one of the MOST traditional, fifties-style, two kids, stay-at-home mom lives ever in all of history. Between me and my husband we’ve coached soccer and baseball, been team mom countless times, taught Religious Education at a Catholic church, led Girl Scout troops and Boy Scouts packs, run the Fun Fair at the elementary school, and had our kids march in the Fourth of July parade. I’m sure there’s more that I’m forgetting, but suffice it to say, as you can see from my resume, we’re as baseball, hot dogs, apple pie and Chevrolet as they get. We even live in the Midwest in real America. So, if I decide to live that way does it mean that everybody has to live that way? I don’t think so. Live the way you want. It doesn’t affect me in the least. As someone else said earlier, if God gave us free will, who among us has the power to take it away?

Have a great, freedom-filled night in America.

I think we shouldn’t confuse an opinion that we vehemently disagree with someone who is just being a menace and offending people. Unfortunately, the arguments for proposition 8 are all outrageous and bigoted. But those are the arguments. The reason why i bring this up is because i think we will be stifling discussion if we keep calling people with differing opinions trolls.

  138. Heather in LA Says:

    susieq Says:

When Huckabee was asked about the Arkansas proposition about gays not being allowed to adopt he said it was because children should be raised by a mother and a father. So does that mean a straight single mother or father can’t adopt in Arkansas?

That’s what’s so insidious. They passed a law that said only married couples could adopt. It was an anti-gay in the guise of pro-family. I don’t it mattered to them if single straight people adopted but they would rather give that up then let gays.

There were 3 states with these propositions. And, EH, the mormon church was targeted because they dumped $15 million dollars into it at the last minute when they realized it wasn’t going to pass and spread fear and lies (that Sherri still believes… sigh)

It drives me CRAZY that they do no research. At LEAST read the friggin NY Times everyday. And if not the morning before the show because you have more important things to do then later that day so you are more INFORMED.

    sheez.

  139. Heather in LA Says:

Red… I hope u understand that if someone disagrees with me I dont think they are a troll. In my opinion, a troll is someone that says what they want, they dont have actual facts to back them up…. they dont site any sources, and they wont answer any follow up questions. They basically ignore any one else’s comments or thoughts.

I respect people that have different views then mine. I would hope that if I say something that you or anyone else disagrees with, I will hear about it. Just like I hope that you expect the same thing. I would just hate to disappoint you by shutting up. Thats why I speak up so much…. I dont want to disappoint anyone ;)

  141. Roger from Ohio Says:

I dont understand that argument about who can adopt.

These good christians should have to go to these children and tell them…. we dont want these people to adopt and love you because we dont like who they share a bed with.

I wonder if they would like that same argument to be used against them.

Should their children be taken away from them if they continue to go to a church that “turns the other cheek” when it comes to church leaders and pedophilia?

Maybe they could find a nice gay couple to raise them with good morals and non bigoted ideas

    just a thought.

    @roger from ohio

thank you. I wasn’t singling you out in particular but the troll word has been mentioned here and as someone who is almost always in the minority(except on this website), i know what it feels like to be ganged up on and called immoral and outrageous etc etc because people don’t agree with my views. I just don’t like the tit for tat.

  145. joey Says:

I hope that everyone here has one blogging name and no one is being played.

If we are being played it creates such sadness & disappointment

  146. Kelly Says:

red - I agree. I think the trolls are gone. diane10 called herself a troll - which is why I said I’m glad a troll showed up. But I think Heather in LA is also right – I guess we have longer memories on some of the cantankerous remarks she has delivered.

We can make a point all day long, but it only gets really good when the counterpoint shows up. So I’m grateful for the debate.

Roger…HERE is the coveted link to smiley emoticons!!!!! You’re in the club dude!

PRIOR POST: I wasn’t singling you out in particular but the troll word has been mentioned here and as someone who is almost always in the minority(except on this website)

RESPONSE: I respectfully disagree. I don’t think trolls are people in the minority. I’ve said things that are in the minority, and even defended EH on occasion (GMWAS, but I thought she was right on occasion - not articulate, but right). I think trolls generally are presenting a minority position - but that isn’t the critical element. To me, the critical element is making statements that are designed to disrupt/derail conversation, not bring clarity to the subject. They often use loaded adjectives (even majority positions do that and it can be problematic too). It’s trying to get people diverted. They generally don’t provide backup to their positions, and often just keep repeating themselves.
Trolls are like EH. Many of have said, OVER AND OVER AND OVER, it’s not her conservative views that bother us so much. It’s her inconsistency, her lack of depth, her mean-spiritedness, her nastiness, her diversion and hits below the belt. Her lack of coherent thought. Frankly, I’m talking myself into putting EH into the “troll” category on The View. Her comments are not designed to learn, teach, further discussion, etc. They are designed to stop discussion and put forth the talking points of someone else - even when they contradict what she said so vociferously previously.

    hello, everyone

i’ve enjoyed reading the comments. i haven’t been watching the view for a few days because my husband and i have been going back and forth to the local VA hospital. he’s a vietnam veteran and his injuries are starting to affect him more than ever.

regarding elizabeth wondering why those against another’s life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness are called bigots. it’s because it’s true. throughout human history have been others dedicated to dehumanizing, victimizing, and slaughtering others because they felt “those” humans were different or not worthy of basic human rights is bigotry.
my state recently celebrated adoption awareness day. i didn’t see anything but love in their belief that children deserve to be loved and wanted.
who are we as a society to say- no, you can’t parent a child because you’re different.
it’s wrong and not very christianlike.

i refuse to believe a god would allow a child to go unloved and unwanted because a gay couple or singleperson wants to parent.
would you rather the children languish in group homes and foster homes until they’re 18 and basically told: you’re an adult now, we cannot provide anymore assistance for you.
that is a huge problem here in maryland.
bravo to those willing to open their homes and hearts to give a child a decent chance.

many people have used the bible to spread hate like the KKK and others.
they’ve used it against women, minorities, and other religions.
these people are not christians or christ-like.

hate against gay and transgender people may not be compared to others, but, it is hate; the same hate still practiced everyday.
we are a human race, a global community.
injustice against one is injustice against all.
when you allow hate against even one segment of society, you’re allowing hatemongers to move onto the next agenda on their list.
because one day, you may be on that list.

  149. red Says:

    @lajet

i agree, i don’t think that just because a person has the minority opinion that he or she is a troll, but often times when it’s a touchy subject, that is how you end up being treated as.

I know Elisabeth H is a pain in the ass but IMHO i have yet to see or read a conservative defend proposition 8 with any arguments that are respectful or dignified, or on pretty much any social issue. I don’t think another conservative on the show will make a difference-at least not in this case. Where is the compassionate conservatism on womens rights, on animal rights, etc? So i guess we will be calling them all trolls?

  150. Stacee Says:

Post #148 heather speaks: WELL SAID!!!! I totally agree!

  151. Erika Says:

    Heather in LA Says:
“Well then you straight people should just stop having gay children. It’s all your fault! Stop it! And I bet it’s Christians that have the highest number of gay kids.”

    LOL! :D

  152. caty Says:

BLESS YOU Heather & your husband!!
I’ll say a prayer for you.

Some people out their need to read, Heather’s post, once, twice and maybe again.
I bet your troubles don’t seem too bad now.
And is all the HATE and JUDGEMENT of others, really good for your soul!?

  153. Bree Says:

This episode was so frustrating. I’ve really lost a lot of respect for Whoopi when she couldn’t define the word ‘Suffrage.’ You would think someone would say something to her on her earpiece so that she could clarify. Those who fought so hard in the women’s suffrage movement must be so saddened by this.

They’re all so out of touch. It seemed clear that none of them actually read the ‘Black is the New Gay?’ article. If they did they would have noted the comparison was examined by the author - not necessarily his opinion. Great article - by the way. If you haven’t read it - you can find it on the Advocate website.

  154. Bree Says:

I meant “Gay is the New Black,” not “Black is the New Gay.” lol

  155. Meredith Says:

June: Is it Roger or Dustin who lived near you in CT? That would be quite cool to realize you know someone from this blog! I think we should all get together for a pizza and a beer some day. Do you guys represent all 50 states?
