The View Recap November 21st: Rachael Ray and “Bank on The View.”

by Winnie McCarthy

Today on a special “Bank on The View” edition of The View, Rachael Ray sat in as guest-host. Both Sherri Shepherd and Barbara Walters were absent, so there were four hosts. Rachael send she would be sending chicken soup over to Sherri, who is under the weather.

I missed a bit in between, but then they were talking about how you have to make healthier food taste good so kids will want to eat it. She suggested turkey burgers with turkey bacon. Elisabeth told her that she should open up her own fast food restaurant. Rachael suggested that you should take your spare change and use that to buy healthier food. Elisabeth said that her friend saves money buy shopping by the circular. Joy said that you can eat less, too. Elisabeth said that anorexics are doing well these days. Whoopi said that you need to check the ingredients in food. Joy said that there used to be one chubby kid in class and now the whole class is overweight. Elisabeth noted that they have gotten rid of recess and kids exercise less. Then they talked about how fun dodge ball is.

In the next segment, Rachael Ray showed them how to create “Meals for a $teal.” The recipes were from Rachel’s Big Orange Book. The book includes kosher meals and vegetarian meals, both which contain good value meals since they are vegetable based. She made a cheesy pasta spinach dish and also made deviled eggs.

Some of Rachel’s food went into space with the astronauts. She joked that it was a proud day for her mother, who did not raise a rocket scientist. She said that she can never be an astronaut, but at least she has fed some.

In the next segment, financial expert Dylan Radigan from CNBC appeared on the show. He said that the economy has not hit rock bottom and it is going to get much worse. He said that the government needs to be accountable to the people. He said that everything about what they are doing with your money should be made available to the public.

Radigan suggested everyone write to their Congressmen and Congresswomen. He said it is “Google for Government” and it is like when you Google your own high school boyfriend. Joy said that she went to a lesbian high school. Dylan said that she can find out what happened to her girlfriend. Joy joked that she became a man. Elisabeth added, “And had a baby.”

Radigan said that if you need the money in your investment accounts to buy a house or pay for education, you should take the money out because it is not worth the risk to leave it in the account. He said that America can emerge as a great nation after this if we seize the moment and all work together to get through it.

Joy asked him who should go to jail over this and he suggested Treasury Secretary Paulson. Joy offered President Bush as well.

Radigan said that the auto bailout is bad because we need to think about how to provide health care to all those employees and the auto dealers need to renegotiate the union contracts. He said that they also need to start making cars that people want to buy which are energy efficient.

The next segment was called “Best of the Drugstore Under $10.” The expert recommended: Suave Daily Clarifying Shampoo, Charles Worthington conditioner (not recommended for thicker hair; for thick hair use Pantene),Caress body cleanser, Olay body quench, Schick Quattro (four-blade razor), Dove cooling lotion, EOS shave gel (she also recommended using conditioner for shaving legs), and Neutrogena hand cream.

The final segment involved Elisabeth shopping for children’s bargain fashions for winter for under $50. She shopped at Old Navy, TJ Maxx, and The Children’s Place. Then she showed some of the outfits in a runway presentation.

  1. Roger from Ohio Says:

dang it… I had 3 really good posts about today’s show, but they are on the off topic thread…… maybe I should bring them over here…. hmmmm

  2. red Says:

does rachel ray have a kids program? Because Elisabeth said that little grace is obsessed with Rachel Ray.

  3. wendee Says:

I think this was a good show….except $50 is still a lot of money to me to spend on a kids outfit they will grow out of in a few months. Maybe I am just cheap, but I think spending $50 on an outfit for myself is appropriate.

  4. red Says:

did anyone catch Rosie on Late Night yesterday? she was great as always. She said that she likes Barbara even though Barbara might not like her as much anymore. And she said that Barbara and everyone at the view gets along well -tongue in cheek of course.

  5. susieq Says:

Wendee, I agree with you about the cost of the clothes. When my son was younger I bought almost all of his clothes at a local consignment shop. With the View being in NYC they should do a segment on those type of stores…With the economy as bad as it is I think consignment and second-hand stores are probably doing a lot of business.

Also, I wonder what they do with the clothes the hosts wear when they no longer need them. They should auction them off for a charity. Maybe if they did they would get some deserved publicity instead of the manipulated kind.

  6. Roger from Ohio Says:

moved over from previous thread… Ill combine the 2

Whoopi said that Sherri is “under the weather” Wasnt she on the show the day (Wed or Thurs) this show was taped?

Why didnt Sherri Shepherd want to be on the show with Rachael Ray?

Im thinking that she didnt want to sit with the “terrorist scarf wearing” Rachael Ray. Im shocked the right wing nut case Elisabeth would associate with this type of person….. but then again she stayed out of the cooking segment.

    Part 2

Does anyone remember what was said on The View about Rachael Ray back when the right wing nut cases were calling her a terrorist? Did EH defend her or did she agree with her ilk? Did Joy defend her? Im sure it was discussed, but I dont remember what was said

    # red Says:

“did anyone catch Rosie on Late Night yesterday? she was great as always.”

Can someone put the video of Rosie’s appearance … on this blog ? I would love to see it.

  8. marilyn Says:

    Roger,

It makes no sense to me, that Whoopi said Sherri was sick .You are correct, they tape the Friday shows earlier in the week and she was fine, for those shows. Sherri was recently on the Rachael Ray Show and I do not believe there is any “friction” going on between them. Strange “cover up”.

  9. Darlene G Says:

Sherri Shepard appeared on The Rachael Ray show just this week, therefore I don’t think the associating with the “terrorist with a scarf” observation applies.

  10. Deborah Says:

Red #2 - with regards to your comment…..I wonder if EH said this looking for an invitation to appear with Grace on Rachel’s show?

  11. Lala Says:

#6 Roger, Here’s partial video of the RR/scarf wearing commercial commentary:

    http://www.236.com/feed/2008/05/28/the_view_addresses_rachel_rays_6800.php

  12. susan brown Says:

Something is up with Joy and Sherri and The View. You have it so right; Sherri was on all week so should have been available when they taped today’s show. Also, a couple of times Joy was off with no explanation. I think BW is grooming Elisabeth to become the next BW. If Rachel had not been on the show today, watching would have been a two blue Valium affect on us all. The clothes on the children were pathetic. No wonder that one child kept crying for her Mother. The kid was ashamed to be dressed in that crap!! After the Rosie video and Rosie on TV last night, I hope it is over. BW stops telling how wonderful and loving the ladies of The View are to each other and Rosie stops with the slams. ENOUGH, LADIES!!! STOP IT!!!

  13. Fran Says:

As far as SS being sick, I assume she wasn’t feeling well before they taped the second show, so they told her to go home, and then asked RR to sit in. (I’ll assume she was a scheduled guest already for her new book…) She also wasn’t in the last segment, so it seems it was a favor to sit in at the last minute.

And that would make sense since they said SS didn’t go to dinner because she wasn’t feeling well. So much for our conspiracy theories of why she and EH were not invited to the big dinner the other night. (EH probably just declined because A) she doesn’t eat and B) they already had a long day if they taped two shows that day and she does have a family, and C) she and Joy hate each other!!)

  14. June Says:

As far as Sherri’s absence, it makes sense to me if she were ill on Wend. and the show taped Wend. afternoon. BW said on Thur.s that Sherri had been not feeling well and couldn’t go to dinner, and then Thurs. she hardly talked at all. If it were taped Thurs.,s till makes sense that she couldn’t handle two shows.
Whoever guessed that Racheal was probably already set-up to be a food guest with her new book, and it was convienent to have her sit in on Hot Topics, I think had it right.

The money guy was great from MSNBC. When he said, “The money is gone it went to money heaven!” OMG, I laughed- I know these are aweful tough times, but that was funny. Then when he refered to Rosie the riveter (women’s plight and progress beating the odds, being an illustration of how things move on and improve) and pointed out the mug! The mind jumps to Rosie O, my jaw dropped.

    LMAO

  15. joey Says:

I thought the segment with the financial advisor, Dylan Radigan, was great but I do wish the gals wouldn’t interrupt so much (or for that matter, at all). It was important information and I didn’t want to miss any of it.

I must be overly sensitive, because I found EH’s comment during the high cost of food segment about it being a good time for anorexics, insensitive and offensive and very ‘not funny’.

I thought the $50 price was actually quite high for outfits for children that young. I also thought they looked kind of scruffy and uncomfortable.

I thought Rachel Ray did a good job but as much as I love Whoopi I do wish she’d be more respectful during cooking segments. It’s distracting trying to watch cook when someone is on the side making faces etc.

I thought BW was ridiculous with her comments yesterday about past co-hosts and so will be joining the week long boycott of The View starting on Monday. Rosie has every right to comment on her experience on The View. It’s part of her past and she shouldn’t have to erase it or bury it just because it makes BW uncomfortable.

Believe it or not there was an article by Rodger Friedman on the Fox News site that was very supportive of Rosie…worth a read.

  16. Kelly Says:

Rosie talks the talk -LATE NIGHT with Conan:

    http://television.aol.com/tvtop5/rosie-rips-barbara-late-night/2330149

  17. ShannonP Says:

What did the financial guy say at the very end of his segment when he lifted the mug? I’ve listened to it three times and can’t make it out? He said “if we have… we can definitely make a good car”
I couldn’t hear what it was that he said.

  18. June Says:

Kelly #15, That was some funny stuff right there, I’m still laughing! Good for Rosie, I’m no great fan of BW anyway!

#16 ShannonP re: the mug thing. I can’t remembe the exact words, but he said something about in a counrty where you have “Rosie the riveter,” and look she is right there on this mug. Then he mentioned it again but not with the mug. I still have it in the DVR- I’ll check it out again. But I’m sure a few people were like “What, Rosie’s not on the show or the mug anymore!” LOL Unless he threw that in on purpose, and I wonder because really Rosie the riveter is a stretch of a compairson the financial situation.

  19. joey Says:

Here’s the article about Rosie and BW by Friedman from the Fox News site:

It’s Rosie O’Donnell vs. Barbara Walters, and sorry: Rosie will get the last laugh.

O’Donnell is set to take TV by storm next Wednesday when she debuts her “Rosie Live” show on NBC at 8pm. The live variety show — which will undoubtedly get a lot of press and viewers — is a try-out for Rosie’s planned weekly “Ed Sullivan”-like show that should start by February.

But yesterday Barbara Walters, the ancient mariner of “The View,” didn’t like it when Rosie spoke about her rollercoaster year on the show. Rosie’s been responding to questions about the show while doing publicity for ‘Live’ show. She told reporters that there isn’t a lot of camaraderie on “The View” among the co-hosts. No kidding.

Barbara’s slick answer? She took two of the co-hosts — Joy Behar and Whoopi Goldberg — to dinner Wednesday night at Le Cirque. It might be the first time the three of them have been seen in public together not at an ABC event ever. Of course it was an event—a well staged one in fact considering the backstage bickering at that show that has had nothing to do with O’Donnell.

In fact, the noted absence of dopey Elizabeth Hasselbeck and loose lipped Sherri Shepherd from the Le Cirque gathering spoke volumes. Hasselbeck, a former reality TV star who’s been very lucky, fought with Walters and the others for months leading up to the recent presidential election. Shepherd has long been rumored to be on the chopping block at the show.

In fact: O’Donnell — Goldberg (whom I love) notwithstanding — brought more life to the turgid, fawning “View” in her one year than ABC could ever have hoped for. The network offered her $10 million to stay, but wanted a three year commitment. O’Donnell was wise enough to cut her losses and get out when the going was good.

“Rosie Live” should be an enormous hit if O’Donnell can keep the show tightly rehearsed and scripted, family friendly and most of all, positive in its celebration of Broadway, New York, and the arts. That isn’t to say that we won’t see the “other” Rosie — the cutting edge one. But “Rosie Live” is going to be about comedy, something she excels at.

  20. June Says:

    The mug thing,

Dylan says, “Remember this is the country that gave us Rosie the riveter, Rosie’s on this mug in front of us” and he lifts the mug!….yatta yatta yatta, and then talking about the auto industry…He lifts the mug again and says, “We have Rosie the riveter of course we can make a good car!”

    LOL

  21. Stacee Says:

    From Wiki:

“Rosie the Riveter - Rosie the Riveter is a cultural icon of the United States, representing the six million women who entered the workforce for the first time during World War II, many of whom worked in the manufacturing plants that produced munitions and material. These women took the places of the male workers who were absent fighting in the Pacific and European theaters.”

  22. red Says:

    @deborah

i don’t know. Maybe i’m being too cynical(not that Elisabeth hasn’t given good reason in the past) but i just never believe any of Elisabeth’s stories about Grace.

    @joey

“Barbara’s slick answer? She took two of the co-hosts — Joy Behar and Whoopi Goldberg — to dinner Wednesday night at Le Cirque. It might be the first time the three of them have been seen in public together not at an ABC event ever. lol it’s so obvious. Give it up Barbara everyone can see right through it.

thanks for providing the article, Joey.

  23. ShannonP Says:

After reading a brief description of the first show Rosie is doing, it sounds pretty entertaining and she has a great mix of guests.
Will she be doing interviews? She said it was just fun…no politics or anything? I’d love intelligent conversations or is it all supposed to be fun and entertainment?
I guess I’m confused on what kind of show it will be?
I wonder if it will be available to watch online?
I have known fake and back stabbing women like those on the View and I hope that Rosie does come out on top of this and her show is a success.
I thought that clip Kelly posted of Rosie on Conan was good. Barbara Walters acts like she made Rosie and that is far from the truth. Rosie did make that show. I personally find Rosie a little obnoxious at times and I thought using the View in the promos for the show was lame…but we all know who the bigger talent and draw is when it comes to Rosie vs. The “ladies” of the View, excluding maybe Whoopi.

  24. red Says:

    @shannonp

also in the interview with Conan i thought Rosie was very gracious, she mentioned that she was grateful to Barbara for giving her the oportunity to be on the show since she was out of work for a long time.

And like you said, in the end Barbara benefited more from Rosie then viceversa.

  25. mibi Says:

sherri was at supersoap on monday so perhaps that why she missed the show when she got back on show tuesday her voice was gone so maybe that afternoon she really was not ready to tape the show and wait till tuesday. just a guess.

  26. Ann Says:

It never occurred to me before but can we read into this that maybe it is bickering between Joy & Whoopi. The “never before seen in public” threesome of Joy, Barbara and Whoopi - is there a reason for this, rather than what we all assume i.e. that Sherri and Elizabeth weren’t invited.

  27. Stacee Says:

Ann, I thought Bits was invited but had to stay home with the kids(?)

I wish Rosie would do another Rosie O’Donnell type of show again. I’d love to hear her talk, invite guests on and do craft and cooking segments. I’m a little disappointed because it sounds like it won’t be that type of show. However, I do hope it’s a success.

  28. NanW. Says:

Ann, I don’t think so. Only because Whoopi and Joy do comedy shows together occasionally. They just did two or three recently. I don’t think they would do those if they didn’t enjoy each other’s company.

  29. Roger from Ohio Says:

    #25 Ann–

that maybe it is bickering between Joy & Whoopi.

I dont think so Ann, just the way they interact on the show…. especially when others are the main focus…. I think Joy and Whoopi have bonded… their comedy brings them together.

Maybe Sherri was sick  …. maybe Elisabeth had to be with the kids cause they were sick  Or maybe they couldnt be controlled out in public the same way they can be on the set. Hence the “convenient” illnesses

  30. Fran Says:

    @shannonp

also in the interview with Conan i thought Rosie was very gracious, she mentioned that she was grateful to Barbara for giving her the oportunity to be on the show since she was out of work for a long time.

I saw the Conan show, and those comments were VERY tongue-in-cheek! Rosie was thanking Babs for the opportunity to work on the View and improve her career, because God knows she had no career BEFORE the View. It was extremely sarcastic.

  31. red Says:

well we are going to agree to disagree. i re-watched the clip and the part that was tongue in cheek was when Rosie said that everyone at The view gets along. Rosie seemed very sincere about being grateful that Barbara hired her because like she said Rosie had not worked on tv since she ended the Rosie O’donnell show.

  32. Lopez Says:

Fran - your assessment is right on.

  33. red Says:

the aol clip does not show the entire interview…

  34. Roger from Ohio Says:

    Ya know whats pretty cool

Fran and Red were having a little “disagreement” and Lopez tossed in her 2cents too…… and the “disagreement” was about the level of sarcasm in a video clip.

It is so refreshing…. it wasnt about hate…. it wasnt about race… it wasnt about dem vs rep…. not liberal vs conservative… just about the level of sarcasm from a comic.

Its a sarcastic day in America!

    I love it!

  35. red Says:

    touché, roger, touché lol.

  36. berndoubt Says:

It’s a sarcastic day and I missed it?

    Dang!
