The View September 10th Recap: Dr. Phil McGraw
As previously mentioned, Sherri Shepherd was named the new fifth host of The View today. They started the show with a clip package showing her life up until now. She said in the clip that she is separated from her husband again.
I thought that overall the segment was pretty funny and it was interesting to see all of the sitcom roles that Sherri had in the past and to hear about her life growing up. She said that she went to an all white school that only had three black people: her, her sister, and the janitor.
Of course they started the hot topics segment by talking about Britney Spears’ awful performance at the MTV video music awards last night. Joy Behar said, “poor girl” and thought she was “tipsy.” Whoopi said she looked like “a bad stripper” and did not care to be there. Sherri Shepherd said she has seen her in concert before and was expecting that type of energy.
Elisabeth Hasselbeck thought that the audience was too young for Akon’s “smack that” song and Britney’s stripper pole dancers and some guy “snacking on her belly.”
Whoopi thought that maybe Britney just does not want to perform anymore. Joy said that she can stop, she has a brain, it is not like “restless leg syndrome.” Barbara does not believe that she wants to give up performing and wished her well.
They next talked about the nude photographs of High School Musical star Vanessa Hudgens which appeared on the internet. Barbara wonders if nudity has become so common that it is no big deal. Joy joked that naked is the “new clothes.”
Whoopi said that it is not surprising in this day and age when you cannot “drop an air biscuit” without being taped on a cell phone. She then had to explain that “air biscuit” was gas. Sherri joked that in her early 20s she sent nude photos to her boyfriend in prison and said that she hopes they get leaked to the media because she looked good back then.
Barbara went out last night to an AARP dinner and saw Bill Clinton. She said that he was “stunning” and she was “giggly” around him. She said that he seemed “in a good place.” Sherri went to Bill’s office in Harlem and tried to take a picture, but they would not let her.
They then discussed the fundraiser that Oprah Winfrey held for Barack Obama in California, which was attended by lots of celebrities. There is some controversy about whether Oprah should be so vocal about her support for him. Barbara said that if you work for a news department (like Barbara does), you cannot put your clout behind a candidate. Sherri joked that Barack is just like one of Oprah’s “favorite things.”
Joy suggested that Oprah should have been neutral and encouraged people to vote, not necessarily for a particular candidate. Joy said that she is so powerful that she could get people to vote for Danny DeVito. Elisabeth said that it is okay that Oprah gives her opinion, but her viewers should listen to her reasons for supporting him and then make up their own mind.
Dr. Phil McGraw appeared on the show to promote the new season of his talk show. Dr. Phil (who is friends with Oprah) says that Oprah said that can say whatever she wants. He added that the viewers will not just blindly follow her and will make up their own mind before voting.
This season on his show he is committed to bring common sense back to people in America. He said that watching Britney’s performance was a “train wreck.” Dr. Phil wants to help Britney Spears and he cannot help her until the people surrounding her stop encouraging her negative behavior.
Dr. Phil told Sherri not to try to fit on the show and to try to encourage healthy and open debate. Sherri added that Elisabeth kept tapping her under the table when she talked over people during hot topics.
Whoopi Goldberg was fitted for a bra. She admitted last week that she has appeared on the show before without a bra and when she tried to wear one it was too small. Whoopi looked very uncomfortable while the fit specialist measured her. If you care, Whoopi was 36 DD. If your bra rides up your back or is uncomfortable, you have the wrong bra. The bra Whoopi liked did not have a wire, but was still supportive. Whoopi seemed rather uncomfortable during the segment and acted rather silly, including putting panties on her face and singing.
The View, Joy Behar, Elisabeth Hasselbeck, Whoopi Goldberg, Barbara Walters, Sherri Shepherd, bra fitting, Britney Spears, VMAs, High School Musical, Vanessa Hudgens, Akon, Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, Oprah Winfrey

Honestly, I found today’s show painful to watch. The chemistry between the hosts just wasnt there, there were a lot of awkward silences, jokes that people didnt laugh at…. things were just off.
If BW cringed at some of Rosie’s comments, she should prepare to cringe a lot more at Sherri’s comments.
I think from now on things will go back to the way they were pre-Rosie, the “hot topics” wont be as interesting, people wont be talking about the show the next day, and lets see if the media trys to spin every word that comes out of Whoopi or Sherri’s mouth, I’m guessing no. Even the mugs are plain and boring now.
Anyways, I’m interested in seeing what everyone else thought of today’s show.

Yeah, I realized today the problem for me is that I wasn’t a View fan before Rosie and I can’t seem to be one after Rosie. I guess I was just watching because it was basically the Rosie show. Like her or not, Rosie has a very big unique talent (especially in the talk show format)that the others just don’t have at all. Without Rosie it’s just a run of the mill daytime show that’s not very interesting or entertaining.

In terms of the chemistry, I am reserving judgment until after we have a couple of episodes with just the four hosts (without Barbara).

I agree with you Winnie. It’s “wait and see” time. I think Barbara is putting a damper on everyone and I’m dying to see an ep without her.
Of course I cannot stand Elizabeth, which doesn’t help, but I like the mature, moderating voice Whoopi brings to the table and I think Sherri’s energy will be an excellent counterpart to that.
We just need to accept that Rosie is gone and take her out of the equation in evaluating the show as it is now. God knows it’s better with Whoopi than it was without.

Stephanie, I fet the same as you. Today’s show was uncomfortable to watch. I think in time things will run smoother, but right now the chemistry is not quite there yet.
A couple of things irritated me. One was when Joy was complaining about Oprah throwing the Obama fundraiser. I did not really agree with her position on why Oprah shouldn’t do it. People that would only vote for someone because someone else supports them have serious issues. That’s NOT Oprah’s fault.
I am now getting a sense that Whoopi will be a good moderator. I felt two key areas where she steered the subject elsewhere, and did so seamlessly. As I mentioned before, she seems very level headed and calm. That is good and just what is needed on the show.
The Phil interview was weird. I thought that was another uncomfortable part of the show. When Sherri talked about someone tapping her knee, I wondered if we really needed to know that and was she trying to kiss up to Barb?
The bra fitting portion was also odd. I thought that part would have been better served if Whoopi was not a part of it. Her sourness was too distracting in what would have otherwise been an informative message.
I’ll still reserve judgement. It may just pick up steam. And at the very least it will be interesting to hear more about Sherri’s mariage!

You’re right Rana, judge the show as it is now. It probably will look alot different in a few weeks after they settle in without BW. Oh, and just a minor observation…is it me, or is this a much smaller table than the previous one? They look so cramped at this table. I liked the table from last season.

This morning was bound to be awkward. I am hoping Barbara will reced into the backgroudn where she was two years ago. I think Whopi will be a good moderator, but watching the show just deepens my missing Meredith. She was so good in her role…handling the personalities, directing the conversations and being funny when necessary.
Like you, Rana, I cannot stand EH. I have never liked her since she first came on the show.
I am disappointed that the “journalistic” voice Meredith provided has not been replaced. We basically have three stand up comedians and a very conservative little blond who isn’t particularly bright!

Amen, Random Musings! I just want to slap Elizabeth up side the head with a clue by four. I honestly can’t remember the last time I disliked someone on television so much.

Well, I was surprised they were not really objective with the performance, rumors and Sarah Silverman. They totally glossed over SARA SILVERMAN!!!!!!!!! Is that because she dates Jimmy Kimmel who is on the same channel?? They blasted Perez Hilton for making fun of kids and what Sarah did was unexcusable!!!!! Who talks like that and thinks it okay??? I think that was the biggest hot topic and not one mention of it. BW is definitley pulling strings to keep thier mouths closed. BORING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The bra and The View: Whoopi is being strapped into something that she’s not really comfortable with.

I agree Aileen….CENSORSHIP….STOP BW..SHE’S KILLING THE SHOW !!!! Whoopie, don’t let BW boss you around. YOU are the moderator and in charge at the table. It doesn’t matter that Barbra owns the show. Her job at the table is not boss, YOURS is…Babs will get over it.and if she doesn’t then she isn’t staying true to the vision of the show. And oh the comments from EH. OK, here it is, remember analogies in school? Here’s one for the view. Bill Geddes is to Elisabeth H as Karl Rove was to GW Bush. The blind leading the blinder…ewwwww ..GW and EH both mouth pieces for nasty neocons. Very scary.

EH the cross-eyed monster - I loathe her and can’t wait for her husband to have an affair. Much as I like Sherri Shepherd, I was hoping Kathy Griffin would be named co-host. I don’t particularly like Kathy, but she would be controversial, unpredictable and never boring - I think they have made a mistake by playing it too safe with Whoopi and Sherri, neither of them are going to rock the boat. The show needs a loose cannon to keep everyone on their toes.

kc’s comment about Whoopie and the bra is very funny. Good point.
I wonder if any of the awkwardness at the table now that Sherrie is there is because of the negotiation wrangling that occurred. She and, I fear, Whoopi, too, seem to be safe bets.
I read someone (maybe on Rosie’s blog in the q&a section?) that they all had to wear earpieces so they could be told when to change topics or something like that. And I read somewhere (sorry to be so vague) that Rosie would not wear one because she wanted to be spontaneous.
I agree the Sara Silverman joke about Britney’s 2 kids being mistakes was more controversial than Kathy Griffin’s “God” comment. Anyone who has seen any of Kathy’s stand-up shows on Bravo would get her humor. I wonder if Sherrie’s scolding was partly because she and Kathy have been in competition for The View slot?

I love reading these blogs since most of you seem to dislike EH so much as I do. I’m gonna wear out my mute button since I activate it everytime I see EH move her mouth! She doesn’t like sitting on the end since Sherry arrived…makes EH have to work at it to get listened to. The other three are going to get funnier as time goes by and they get used to each other. Go Whoopie!!!
