The View September 16th Recap: Tom Bergeron and Michelle Rodriguez

by Winnie McCarthy

Today on The View, all five hosts were at the table. Joy Behar said she still has a bad cold, but is not contagious. She said she “croaked through 45 minutes” at her stand-up performance with Whoopi on Saturday.

Barbara Walters went to see Celine Dion last night at Madison Square Garden. She said Celine is “just the nicest lady” and does a great act. Sherri Shepherd said if you think about the sound of angels singing, that is Celine’s voice. Barbara ate a whole box of popcorn. Barbara gained three pounds from eating the popcorn. She had lost weight, almost 15 pounds and it took a year to lose it. Whoopi joked she was “looking a little chunky” and joked she only weighed 21 pounds to begin with. Sherri said Barbara’s butt looks good. Joy said Barbara gains her weight in her boobs and that is what her husbands liked. She said if a man likes flat-chested woman, you should see if he is gay.

Whoopi revisited yesterday’s topic of she and Sherri getting poor cable service. DirectTV and Time Warner (she did not say the names today) came to the rescue. Whoopi said that the companies should treat everyone with the kind of service they gave her and Sherri yesterday. Sherri said they sent the cutest guys to her house to work on her cable. Whoopi said “desperate women will accept anything” and then said she meant desperate for cable.

There has been a complaint by Carly Fiorina, a campaign advisor, that the Saturday Night Live sketch about Sarah Palin and Hillary Clinton was sexist. They played part of the sketch. Sarah Palin said she thought the sketch was funny. Elisabeth said women get behind a woman when she is criticized based on gender. Elisabeth said that Joe Biden’s comment that Palin getting to the White House would be a backward step for women was a sexist comment. Barbara said that she did not hear that comment, but pointed out that everyone is focusing on such trivia. She added that she does not even know what sexist is anymore, because every comment about a woman is being labeled sexist. Sherri read the definition of sexism aloud and said that Fiorina thought that the sketch was sexist because it showed Palin as lacking substance compared to Clinton. Barbara said that is not sexism, although it may be prejudice. Joy said that what about saying Clinton has “cankles”? Elisabeth said it is looksist. Whoopi said that some comments are just improper, but not sexist or racist, like when Biden said Obama was a clean-cut, articulate guy or when Obama called a reporter “sweetheart.”

Barbara questioned whether the reaction to the McCain interview was because they are all female and people did not expect them to ask the questions of him that they did. Joy said that they thought they would not be as smart as they are because they are a daytime chat-show.

Joy joked that you know the world is changing when she starts getting quoted by The New York Times. Whoopi said that the show has always been one that asks questions and when Obama comes on, they will ask the same kind of questions. During the break, they got Barbara the quote from Biden. He was asked whether Palin would be a step forward for women. He said that based on the policies of McCain that she agrees with, it would be a backward step for women. Elisabeth said that is a sexist statement and he would not say that about a male candidate. Whoopi said he is speaking about ideology, like the repealing of Roe v. Wade, would be a backward step for women.

Elisabeth said that a lot of people are getting exhausted by the election process and all of the side stories and she hopes people don’t step out of the political process because of it. Joy joked that Sarah Palin must be exhausted from all the cramming she has been doing. Elisabeth got animated and said that she has been in government and not to compare her to a high school student. Barbara said she knows about oil. Whoopi said that deregulation is a big issue and if the regulators were doing their job, there would not being so many problems. Elisabeth said that she wished for the election you could get sheets on the candidate like you get about the features in different models of Ford cars when you want to buy one. It would explain the positions of each candidates without “all of the crap.” Sherri said that but then the closer would come in and confuse everything and you drive away in a Mercedes that you can’t afford.

Joy said that her daughter made a good point that the Republicans have been in office for eight years and people should just connect the dots. Elisabeth said that McCain is his own person. Joy said that he was there all that time with Bush and is running on that experience. Elisabeth said “Then why are the polls so close?” Joy said that people have not yet figured it out, but they will.

Tom Bergeron appeared to promote the new season of Dancing with the Stars which begins next Monday. He will also be co-hosting the Primetime Emmy’s this Sunday. He is nominated for an Emmy for reality show host and the other nominees with be his co-hosts. Joy asked who he thought was prettier Heidi Klum or Ryan Seacrest (two of the other nominees). He joked that was an easy question and “Ryan is hot!”

Barbara asked him about all the reality shows, many of which she thinks are “so absurd,” and asked him what it says about us. Bergeron said that some are good and some aren’t, just like other television formats.

They talked about the contestants on this season of Dancing with the Stars, including 82 year old Cloris Leachman. He said that “age is just a number” applies to her. He looks forward to what will come out of her mouth when she comes over to talk to him after the dance and the ABC censors will have to be on the ready. Elisabeth asked about Toni Braxton’s heart condition. He said that he has been told everyone is doing fine and there are doctors on set. He said part of the reason she wanted to do the show was to get her performance mojo back after her diagnosis. He was suspicious of Kim Kardashian’s announcement of a toe injury on the day they announced the cast because of the timing. He said that Marie Osmond really did faint, unless she faked the sweating and a bit of drooling.

He loves “the moment” of hosting and being totally present and alive to what is happening in the room. Joy said he has all the great qualities of a host and he is cute. He is also the host of America’s Funniest Home Videos and told his daughters to always remember that people getting hit in the crotch got them through college.

The next segment was an “80s fashion show.” They showed a funny and unflattering photo of Sherri from the 1980s. The fashion from the 1980s is back, but with a modern twist. Among the trends are neon colors paired with more neutral colors, digital watches, ankle boots, leggings, floral prints with cropped/fitted leather bomber jackets, bright prints with a long jacket and belted at an empire waist, and lace top and bottom.

Actress Michelle Rodriguez appeared on the show to promote her new film Battle in Seattle. They commented that she was dressed in a 1980s style. The film is about the protest in 1999 in Seattle at the World Trade Organization (WTO) talks. She said that corporations rule our everyday and we don’t realize the power we have to rule their everyday. She said we need to check up on companies. She was inspired for her role from her dad, who worked on trying to make Puerto Rico independent. She took his passion and likes when people stand up for what they believe it.

Michelle, like Sherri, grew up a Jehovah’s Witness. She said it is important to come “out of the fetus” or the protective shell and to learn on your own. Sherri asked her about her arrest for DUI and other legal troubles. Michelle said that she used to poop her her pants as a baby, too, and there are a lot of things that she does not do anymore. She said that Hollywood is like High School and she will never grow if she listens to what other people say about her. She said that people only see 1% of her life and don’t really know her.

Whoopi asked her about the rumor she will return to Lost. Michelle said coyly that she might be coming back for an episode.

She got her first role by finding an ad for an audition in an actor’s paper. She just showed up with any formal training and beat out 400 other people. She did not have to audition for James Cameron for her role in his new movie Avatar.

****
They really need to work on the timing/production of the show. The end of the show has been cut off a few times lately. Here, too, Whoopi was doing the closing comments about Michelle from the couch and the show just ended in the middle of them.

  1. ShannonP Says:

I am REALLY tired of hearing the word “sexist” applied to every freakin little thing. It isn’t sexist to say that Palin isn’t qualified. What Biden said about setting women backward isn’t sexist, it’s an accurate statement. What would be sexist is if someone said “she should be barefoot and pregnant and cooking my dinner” Talking about whether a person is qualified or not or what their agenda is or experience is not sexist. And it’s beyond obvious what the McCain campaign is doing with the big sexist crap, it’s trying to hide behind it so that reporters and the media tip toe around Palin in fear of being called sexist. It’s a disgrace and cowardly. If your nominee is so qualified and you don’t have anything to fear, let her stand alone on her “qualifications” and “experience” and answer questions without hiding behind the sexist smoke screen.

  2. Emma Says:

Kudos to Barbara for verifying the Joe Biden quote. In doing so, she demolished Elisabeth’s claim that it was sexist. Of course, partisan shill that she is, Elisabeth refused to concede the point even after Barbara read the quote.

  3. NAOMI Says:

PLEEEEEEEEZE, I beg of you, get rid of Elizabeth. I don’t mind a “different opinion”, but I find it hard to tolerate whiney stupidity. Get a conservative who has a brain.

  4. Darla Saleem Says:

Hi All, once agin this is only my 2nd time emailing a show (the view) Elisabeth must be told that she is looking like a hipocrit. She loved Pres. Bush anf agree with his policies. Adamant about her supportof him. Why now is she and Sen. McCain trying to distance him from Bush? Duh? McCain has an ad running about him voting with Bush 90% of te time. Elisabeth’s cediability is in the toilet now with me. A supporter means just that you support the candidate that comes closest to your views. It doesn’t mean that you have to agree with everything they espouse. Elisabeth stop agreening and lying with your candidate. Please don;t get me started on her views of Sarah Palin. Just some words for Elisabeth remeber how you felt about Grace’s first day of school ans Sherri too. That’s normal, don’t make excuses.

  5. Sandy Woodward Says:

Here is a link to video of Joe Biden’s quote.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ijGoISc7vFc

Sexist is treating Palin with kid gloves because she is a woman. She is running for an office that is a heartbeat away from the Presidency of this country.

  6. Kelly Says:

When I hear Elisabeth say things like Palin governed on ethics, or the American people are smart (implying only those who will vote for McCain), or that Biden said Palin would put women back, or sexism only helps Palin…

I just keep in mind, Elisabeth is the person, who used The View’s national audience of 3 million viewers to support and defend Bush for the past 8 years.

She used The View to speak OUT against McCain, until she spoke out FOR him.

Please, her claim to fame was prancing around in a loincloth munching on cockroaches.

Former Federal Reserve Chair Alan Greenspan said [Sept. 14] that this is “by far” the worst economic crisis he has ever seen. “There’s no question that this is in the process of outstripping anything I’ve seen, and it still is not resolved and it still has a way to go…”

  7. Sarah Says:

Let me get this straight: So according to the EH, and the republican propoganda machine: 1. It’s wrong to expect a woman to actually be qualified for the job she’s given. We are supposed to just give it to because she wants it, with no questions asked. 2. It’s only wrong to mock Pali on SNL, but not Hillary (who was mocked just as much as Palin). And, comedy is no longer allowed either, because it’s disrepsectful. 3. It’s not sexist to expect Palin to be held to different standards then the rest of the candidates, and it IS sexist to treat her the same way we would any candidate that we know nothing about. 4. up is down 5. black is white 5. the sky is green and we should all accept that because the right wing tells us we should.

I feel like I’m in a bad dream that I can’t wake up from, or a really cheesy movie that just keeps playing over and over again.

  8. red Says:

i’m glad Barbara refuted Elisabeth’s accusations by reading reading exactly what Joe Biden said. I agree with all the commenters above that Joe Biden was clearly talking about Sarah Palins policies being detrimental to women. Talking about policy is not sexist.

“she said if a man likes flat-chested woman, you should see if he is gay.”

wow i just read this and i’m very disappointed and offended(because i am a small breasted woman and my boyfriend is satisfied) that Joy would make such a ridiculous, stupid statement. So she is saying that anyone who doesn’t have big boobs is unworthy of a man’s attention? That basically leaves a lot of women out including celebrities like Keira Knightly, Natalie Portman, Kate Hudson, etc.

  9. rainlillie Says:

If Palin were a man and came to the table with the same resume, I would STILL say she isn’t qualified. I thought republicans were big on national security? They’d willing put someone a heartbeat away from the presidency, who says: “I have insight into Russia because you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska.”

I guess it could be worse, she could have said, I know how to perform brain surgery, because I dissected a frog in high school.

  10. Sandy Woodward Says:

    LMAO

Fiorina says Palin doesn’t have enough experience to run HP — but is all for her being VP.

This morning KTRS Radio in St. Louis, Missouri interviewer McGraw Milhaven, interviewed Former Hewlett Packard CEO Carly Fiorina a co-chair of the McCain presidential campaign. Fiorina was asked if she thinks Palin has enough experience to run Hewlett Packard.

”No, I don’t,” said Fiorina. ”But you know what? That’s not what she’s running for. Running a corporation is a different set of things.”

  11. Valerie Says:

Enough with the sexist stuff! I am not saying that there isn’t legitimate sexism in the media and in the world, it is, but they have taken it too far. And, let me add, that if Barack or his campaign uttered the words “racist” half as much as the McCain camp has uttered sexist - they would have crucified him for pulling the “race card”. Apparently that one isn’t “allowed” to be pulled but the “sex card” is. Yet another Double standard.

Sarah - I agree, a nightmare that you can’t wait to wake up from. Can’t wait until Nov.5.

Sandy W - thanks for that - I needed the laugh!!

  12. Holly Says:

Seems that BW is not going to let EH just spew Hannity’s talking points without verification anymore. Taking quotes out of context - “Obama says he’s a Muslim” - or deliberately distorting the words or meaning - “Obama calls Palin a pig” or miscasting Biden’s remarks re: Bush/Palin policies as sexist- are what right wing viral emails, Fox, Rush, O’Reilly, etc. are all about, not what “The View” should be.

  13. Sandy Woodward Says:

I really liked Michelle Rodriguez. I wish she were one The View hosts.

  14. Dana Says:

The Republican Party is celebrating Palin because once McCain kicks the bucket (if he becomes President he’d better have someone taste is food) she becomes the puppet that George Bush has been for 8 years. Rove and Cheney will be at it again, making lots of money from oil whether it be drilling more or staying in Iraq.

  15. Sandy Woodward Says:

Absolutely Dana. She was handed picked by Cheney just like he hand picked himself 8 years ago.

  16. Random Musings Says:

    Amen, Rainlillie!

  17. Pam from Jax Says:

I’ve started asking ‘questions’ on the View site, and have yet to get an answer. Here’s my latest: Why do you allow Elizabeth to dominate the show? She is so very abrasive and rude that I have taken to muting it whenever she is speaking, which seems to be about 40% of the time. Please, just put her on her very own reality show and get back to the View’s business, which is to air current topics and figures in the news. She has no interest in exchanging views, she demands that all the others shut up while she expounds, and in short, I’m losing interest in the show. Is there some hidden agenda that I’m missing? She cannot possibly be the only well-spoken conservative woman you have available. Please get her OUT and put in someone who doesn’t make my stomach tighten in dread every time I see them walk in. Women don’t thrive in constant conflict; this is not WWE, or even Dancing With the Stars. It’s not a competition; she has turned the show into the Elizabeth Rules Show. Stop it. Get her out.

  18. Kelly Says:

    Sarita?

Do any of you remember Eva Perón (Evita)?

    Palin is Perón.

Evita rose to power as the First Lady of Argentina from 1946 until her death in 1952 by taking control of government and giving to the poor. Wiki: “Eva Perón accepted the Peronist nomination for the office of Vice President of Argentina. In this bid she received great support from the Peronist political base, low-income and working class Argentines referred to as descamisados or “shirtless ones”. However, opposition from the nation’s military and elite, coupled with her declining health, ultimately forced her to withdraw her candidacy.”

    Sound familiar?

Evita controlled the masses through her syndicated radio program in Buenos Aires. Palin is headlining every news and entertainment outlet including the covers of the glossies. Where Evita used feminine wiles to advance in the male-dominated kingdom of politics, Palin used Big Oil.

Peron would throw money out of the windows of the campaign train to her poor descamisados, whereas Palin merely authorized $3,000 checks to every Alaskan. They both won the hearts of the working-class citizens.

Eva was not all she claimed, and she and her husband holed away riches they had siphoned from the government, and therefore, from the people.

I wonder how long before the press discovers the Road to Nowhere (as seen in Gibson’s piece) was built in place of the Bridge to Nowhere, and will likely serve as a transportation link for oil?

I wonder how long before the press discovers that Diebold/Premier corrupt voting machines where used in Palin’s election?

I wonder how long before the Librarian comes forward?

The backlash has begun, the honeymoon is over, and the lies told by McCain and Palin are being peeled back, layer by layer, forcing even the likes of evil Karl Rove into declaring foul.

The Republican campaign will leave a permanent stain on American history, and while we discuss sexism, Obama pulls ahead another point in the polls: 46 to 47.

  19. Sandy Says:

I did get to see the show today, and all I can say is it was okay.

A box of popcorn makes B.W. gain 3 lbs, in one evening? Wow, I’m so glad I’m not at all like that.
I am lucky to be able to eat just about anything and not gain weight. At least so far in my life anyway.

I saw the SNL skit about Sarah Palin, and Hilary. I thought it was pretty darn good & funny.
Sexist never entered my mind while watching it, or after watching it.
I agree with B.W. it seems like every comment made about a woman is sexist any more.

I didn’t think senator Biden’s comment was sexist either.
Although I don’t think all women agree with him, that Sarah Palin in the White House would be a step backward for woman.
A lot of woman agree with her ideology.
I also think that there may be some women who will put that aside. (not that I think that is right or smart).

I enjoyed the interview with Michelle Rodriquez. I found her an interesting young lady.

  20. Kelly Says:

Shoot, I just Googled Evita Palin and found I was not the first to draw this comparison:
    http://www.ireport.com/docs/DOC-80641

  21. Sandy Woodward Says:

    Kelly,

Just because you are not the first just means you are not the only one.

They also have a Palin Hitler comparison

    http://www.ireport.com/docs/DOC-80969

    It just gets creepier.

  22. Lajet Says:

PRIOR POSTS: Eva Peron, Hitler -
RESPONSE: YIKES. I never thought of that connection, but it’s sending shivers down my spine - and I was already scared.

PRIOR POST: I don’t think all women agree with him, that Sarah Palin in the White House would be a step backward for woman.
    AGREE

A lot of woman agree with her ideology.
    AGREE

RESPONSE: However, I don’t think these two groups are mutually exclusive. You can can agree with SP, and it could still be a step backward for women. And I regretfully believe that there are women who recognize it would be a step back AND agree with her - something about women being the helpmeet, and obedient

  23. Erika Says:

Sandy, I know we agree on a certain issue and I feel strongly about it, but I AM putting that aside this election. I’m trying to see the big picture and cannot make that the basis of my decision.

I think the intelligence factor of the candidates is paramount. I truly believe McCain is incompetent due to his lack of intelligence. We know he graduated fifth from the bottom of his class, has little or no understanding of economics even though he has stated over the years that he would learn, cannot navigate the internet, and doesn’t know the difference between a shiite and a sunni. Even if I did not know all of this, just hearing him speak, shows me how unintelligent he is. I don’t attribute any of his lack of knowledge or his inability to learn on his age; he’s just not smart.

I wouldn’t qualify someone only on intelligence, although it is essential. Fortunately, Obama has the integrity and fortitude to complement his intelligence.

  24. Sandy Woodward Says:

A few days ago on this site someone mentioned they had actually dreamed of Sarah Palin. I didn’t think much of it at the time. But seems lots of people of dreaming disturbing dreams about this woman.

I recall that after 9/11 people from around the world had disturbing dreams about those horrible events.

I came across this on Slate where they posted several accounts of dreams.

    http://www.slate.com/id/2200015/

Thankfully I have not dreamed of her yet. But I would rather dream a dream than life a nightmare.

  25. mibi Says:

so the woman who think it ’sexist” of snl to say palin lack substance ( i guess it not okay to say palin unprepared but cool to say that about barack i mean he is a guy) but it is not bad(sexist) for the same woman to say she would not let palin run a major company like HP. http://blog.newsweek.com/blogs/stumper/archive/2008/09/16/palin-s-favorability-ratings-begin-to-falter.aspx bottom video

if comparing women on there merrit is sexist what do you call compare there boob size extra sexist? ms lady needs to get her arguement together

  26. Erika Says:

I hope I don’t have the Palin nightmare of shooting all the animals! That’s how I most associate her: as a hunter and supporter of aerial wolf hunting and anti-Polar bears.

On twitter.com, she is the top twittered topic and if twitterers are (hopefully) representing mainstream thought, then, the majority of people are anti-Palin.

  27. mibi Says:

A friend forwarded the following to me. It’s slightly edgy, but definitely thought provoking! prePS.I don’t nessicarily support all following statements but point is good

I’m a little confused. Let me see if I have this straight…..

    * If you grow up in Hawaii , raised by your grandparents, you’re ‘exotic, different.’
    * If you grow up in Alaska eating moose burgers, you’re a quintessential American story.

    * If your name is Barack, you’re a radical, unpatriotic Muslim.
    * If you name your kids Willow , Trig and Track, you’re a maverick.

    * If you graduate from Harvard law School, you are unstable.
    * If you attend 5 different small colleges before graduating, you’re well grounded.

    * If you spend 3 years as a brilliant community organizer, become the first black President of the Harvard Law Review, create a voter registration drive that registers 150,000 new voters, spend 12 years as a Constitutional Law professor, spend 8 years as a State Senator representing a district with over 750,000 people, become chairman of the state Senate’s Health and Human Services committee, spend 4 years in the United States Senate representing a state of 13 million people while sponsoring 131 bills and serving on the Foreign Affairs, Environment and Public Works and Veteran’s Affairs committees, you don’t have any real leadership experience.
    * If your total resume is: local weather girl, 4 years on the city council and 6 years as the mayor of a town with less than 7,000 people, 20 months as the governor of a state with only 650,000 people, then you’re qualified to become the country’s second highest ranking executive.

    * If you have been married to the same woman for 19 years while raising 2 beautiful daughters, all within Protestant churches, you’re not a real Christian.
    * If you cheated on your first wife with a rich heiress, and left your disfigured wife and married the heiress the next month, you’re a Christian.

    * If you teach responsible, age appropriate sex education, including the proper use of birth control, you are eroding the fiber of society.
    * If, while governor, you staunchly advocate abstinence only, with no other option in sex education in your state’s school system, while your unwed teen daughter ends up pregnant , you’re very responsible.

    * If your wife is a Harvard graduate lawyer who gave up a position in a prestigious law firm to work for the betterment of her inner city community, then gave that up to raise a family, your family’s values don’t represent America ’s.

    * If you’re husband is nicknamed ‘First Dude’, with at least one DWI conviction and no college education, who didn’t register to vote until age 25 and once was a member of a group that advocated the secession of Alaska from the USA, your family is extremely admirable.

    OK, *much* clearer now.

  28. Kelly Says:

    That was sooooooooo good mibi.

    Thanks for the smile!!!

  29. Wynona Says:

I must say I was pleasantly surprised by Miss Rodriguez. You hear a lot of bad items about someone, and you are given an impression of them that sometimes can be less than accurate. This was the first time I had seen her in an interview setting and she seemed very intelligent and well-spoken and was quite beautiful. I found myself wanting to know more about her. I hope they have her on again.

    P.S. GO MIBI!

  30. Sandy Woodward Says:

    Thanks mibi.

I am going to run off some copies and hand out at the Dem HQ.

  31. NOTIMPRESSED Says:

Yes..let’s get off the “sexist” train and
see her for who she really is.

    Unqualified, Underhanded, Underexposed,
    Underachieved, Underdog….Under the Bridge

    AMEN….

  32. Missy Says:

    READ COMMENT #24!!!!

  33. ShannonP Says:

Pam #17, I liked your post. I don’t think they’ll answer you, but I enjoyed reading your thoughts.

  34. Kelly Says:

Sandy - I’m going to make my husband sit here while I read these dreams to him. LOL

Did you notice there is a hopeless dream from “Michael?”

  35. Sandy Woodward Says:

    LOL

  36. Sandy Says:

    # 23 Erika,
It’s not a basis of my decision either. I think we might agree on more than you might think. :)
However I think that senator McCain is more intelligent than he some times gives the impression of.

  37. Beverly Says:

Hi All - Today was a rare occasion that I watched (listened, really) to The View. I keep trying NOT to post this but now that there have been 3 comments complimenting Michelle R., I just have to say that as much as I like her work and I like her personal story, I thought her comments were bizarre and her descriptions of the new movie and her explanations for everything else were all VERY inarticulate. I kept cringing through her entire interview.

When she said that she wouldn’t stand for anyone telling her what to think, do or say (something to that effect - about religion and leaving the fetus ???), I thought how ironic it is that she is an actress PAID to do & say what others tell her to.

I thought maybe she was nervous (& just young) but then she seems pretty self-assured. I especially did not appreciate her reaction to the DUI question. It would have been so easy for her to just answer that she learned her lesson (rather than making the “poo” reference.) The way she conducted herself really disappointed me. I sure didn’t see what the previous posters saw.

Having disco-danced through the height of it all, the 80’s fashion flash-back kinda hurt … I’m not ready to be considered “retro” just yet!

  38. Lopez Says:

People don’t give off an impression of intelligence. They are either intelligent or they are not.

Bush supporters have said something similiar-he’s more intelligent than how he sounds. They said this when he bankrupt every company he ever owned. Some are still saying it as Bush bankrupts this country.

McCain is going full throttle on this campaign. I have a sneaky suspicion if he were intelligent, he wouldn’t be coy about it. His presence, talk, and demeanor would make it clear to everyone.

  39. Sandy Woodward Says:

    Beverly,

I didn’t recognize her at first. And I always thought the actress from Lost who got into all that trouble was nuts. But something about her interview - disjointed as it was - made me wiki and google her.

I think she was nervous and I think she if she ever watches The View she screams at the screen a lot.

Radical as her opinions are, I think they are her own. I found her refreshing.

I missed the retro comment but I too disco-danced through the height of it all. And still do when I am sure I am alone. This summer I totally enjoyed the movie Mamma Mia — it inspired me to keep moving.

But I agree with you I am not ready to be called ‘Retro’ yet or if ever! ;)

  40. Erika Says:

Sandy, I think we probably do have some similar views. Cool. :)

  41. Beverly Says:

Hey Sandy W - I’m willing to give Michelle R. the benefit of doubt. I really like her feistiness. And, I didn’t object to any of her opinions — just the way she expressed herself was bizarre to me. Since comments were made at how well-spoken she was and that she should be a host, I just couldn’t keep my 2 cents to myself. Anyway, I feel better now.

Just to clarify - no specific comment was made about us being “retro” but anytime “old becomes new again” (IMO) it signifies the former as now retro. I want 10 more years for the 80’s to come back around! Wahhhhh!

  42. Sandy Woodward Says:

    Beverly,

Hiya. LOL yes 10 more years with out the big hair upkeep.

The “out of the fetus” remark was a little odd. But it was still clear what she meant.

She reminded me of Angelina Jolie. I think she could kick EH off any island.

  43. Sandy Woodward Says:

Gosh isn’t it odd they had two guests and only one even got a blip on the radar. Obviously it is an election year.

  44. Sarah Says:

“If Palin were a man and came to the table with the same resume, I would STILL say she isn’t qualified.”

If Palin were a man she wouldn’t have even been invited to the table in the first place.

  45. Beverly Says:

Sandy W - (Laughing) I decided today would be a no-political blogging day. It was tough! Soooo, commenting on the fluff fed my blogging addiction … guess I cheated on my “diet” really. Well, I made it all the way to 9:02 pm and I guess it was pretty low-calorie fluff :)

Tomorrow, I’m back to politics as usual …

    G’night!

  46. rainlillie Says:

“They also have a Palin Hitler comparison.”

I read that too, I think Hitler is on his own level of evil. Palin may be a lot of things but she’s no Hitler.

    Thanks, Random Musings.

“Fortunately, Obama has the integrity and fortitude to complement his intelligence.:

    Well Put, Erika.

“I didn’t think senator Biden’s comment was sexist either.”

    I didn’t either.

    Sarah #44.
    Two words… Dan Quayle. :)

I am no longer a DirectTV customer because of the last two years of their awful customer services. I’ve had them for 8 years.

I like that Elizabeth H. adds a different side to the topics. Frankly it’s one of the reasons I watch the show. I emailed before that with Rosie and Meredith off the show I really enjoy watching now.

  49. Ann Says:

Guys, from an Australian point of view, we can’t believe Sarah Palin is even in the race. President Putin and the Chinese leaders are sharp and cunning and ready to pounce - you need someone STRONG, smart and savvy in charge of your country. China is emerging as the new superpower and you Americans have FAILED TO SEE THIS COMING!!!!! Please don’t vote this woman and McCain in - at least Obama, although inexperienced, has a law degree and went to Harvard which suggests that he at least has some degree of intellect.

  50. mibi Says:

lol at ann it remind me of what the host of the mtv awards who is from britian said please people do yourselves a favor and vote for barack obama. you deserve it. it so crazy the world is watching.

  51. Lajet Says:

PRIOR POST: I read that too, I think Hitler is on his own level of evil. Palin may be a lot of things but she’s no Hitler.

RESPOSNE: When Hitler was elected, he wasn’t “Hitler” (i.e. the evil dictator) yet either. The crowds ADORED him. I remember watching a video clip of him during the campaign in high school (late 60’s - a LONG time ago, which indicates it had an impression taht stuck with me for several decades). My mind had a hard time grasping the adoration and excitement the people had for Hitler with what I knew about him from history. It’s scary. I even remember the teacher talking with us about how hard it was to mesh the two pieces of information (adoring public vs. what we knew about what he did) - and wanting us to understand how things looked before he came to power. It was an effective lesson since I remember it all these years later.

  52. Kelly Says:

    Ann – thank you.

  53. Lajet Says:

P.S. I don’t know if Sarah Palin is evil. I’m not suggesting that I know she is like Hitler.
What I am seeing is an adoration of her that is similar, and underlying agenda at odds with American culture but largely not reported by MSM. She has 6 different stories about the firing of the man who refused to fire her brother-in-law, and a well-respected man who says she did, and now refused to cooperate.
She did fire the librarian, and hired her back after a protest and petition - with no explanation. Sure makes the effort to ban books makes sense.

She never joined AIP, BUT it hasn’t been around for decades. The head of AIP enocuraged it’s members and listeners with political aspirations to join EITHER mainstream party which would get them elected so that they could infiltrate (his word.) And although she didn’t join AIP, her husband (the first dude that is included on LOTS of email for state business despite not being a state employee, so presumably very influential) however did join, and she sent a very supportive videotape to the AIP convention.
She has withdrawn cooperation from Troopergate, and in the process attempted to trash the reputation of some very good, respected Alaska servants. The charge of partisanship is difficult to understand - the commission was formed WAY before she became a candidate, the vote was about 2/3 republicans and 1/3 democrats, and the vote was UNANIMOUS, and there were no objections to the various people appointed (the head guy and the investigator) until McCain’s people came in.
Under her administration, there was a shift in policy to charge rape victims for the rape kit (no small expense - about $500 - $1500). I couldn’t figure out why. She wasn’t charging for fingerprinting, or autopsys or other investigative methods. My best guess is it is because rape kits include emergency contraception. Regardless of the reason she started charging for rape kits, it brings in to question what her motives are.
Following her nomination, the pastor of her church advised parishioners not to talk to the media (who had descended on Wasilla) and warned the media not to bother the people of Wasilla. What in the world would a church want to hide?

Although not a complete history of SP, there is a very interseting letter from a community member here: http://mudflats.wordpress.com/2008/09/04/a-letter-about-sarah-palin-from-anne-kilkenny/

As I said, she may or may not be as evil as Hitler. Probably not, just on statistical probability. But I am not at all comfortable with her honesty and integrity.

  54. Kelly Says:

Lajet – you make a profound point.

We look at Hitler and wonder how could people not see.
We look at Stalin, Mao, Mussolini; religious extremists: Jim Jones and the People’s Temple, David Koresh and the Branch Davidians, suicide bombers and the purely illogical: Charles Manson, and wonder how could people not see.

I look at Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rove, Rice, Iraq, Big Oil, Big Insurance, Wall Street, and wonder how could people not see.

I look at McCain/Palin and wonder, how could people STILL not see?

We look at Jesus, Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jr. and John F. Kennedy and mourn because people did not see.

  55. Peggy Says:

Just letting you all know who much I enjoy and look forward to reading all the posts on this website! Vote for Obama 2008!

  56. Lajet Says:

Kelly - Well said!! and so much more succinct and eloquent than my palavering. I think the Obama campaign could use your talents as a speech writer. : )

  57. Kelly Says:

    Thanks Lajet.

Palin’s story is going to get ugly fast…the key is in the emails.

Turn off Rush folks. We are in a crisis.

  58. rainlillie Says:

Palin has her own faults, and from what I read a better comparison on how she operates would be Bush.

She appoints friends to high paying jobs. She hides e-mails, fires people that she feel may have crossed her. Has decideded not to talk to investigators in Alaska. Comes across as a down home, folksy kind of gal. You know the kind of person you’d like to have a beer with. Her poll numbers are down, so I guess people are starting to catch on.

So far in my lifetime, I haven’t found anyone that I would honestly compare to Hitler. Hopefully it will stay that way.

  59. Julianne Says:

Ann - Not all Americans are alike. Someone with “some degree of intellect” would know that.

I agree with you and please don’t attack all of us for some of us. I never voted for Bush and I’m not voting for McCain.

  60. rainlillie Says:

“I never voted for Bush and I’m not voting for McCain.”

I went to Canada this summer and we talked to some of the people there and made it clear that we are not Bush supporters. I always wonder if the rest of the world think that the majority here are in favor of Bush’s policies.

  61. Lajet Says:

Julianne - That’s a curious response. I didn’t take Ann that way at all

Ann - I thought you made excellent points. You sounded scared - like a lot of us!! and passionate - like a lot of us. I haven’t seen passion AGAINST a candidate like this before (and that includes Clinton who’s negatives don’t hold a candle to Palin)
There was a rally in Alaska, sponsored by the RNC (with all their time, money, people, and organizational abilities) to Welcome Home Sarah which drew about 1,000. There was another, Alaskans Against Palin rally organized by less than a dozen women around a kitchen table that drew 1500 people. This is even more remarkable when you consider that
    1. Alaska is a RED (very red) state
    2. It is somewhere from uncomfortable to dangerous to go against powers in Alaska (just ask the head of the troopers, the librarian, the legislative director, adn various other lessors efforts to control and/or punish poeple)
    3. Palin is “local girl makes it big”

  62. Kelly Says:

I helped host a group (the mayor and the port director) from the Canary Islands once. They spoke Spanish. They did not know I spoke Spanish. And they had nothing good to say about “Typical Stupid Americans.”

They called Bush a Cowboy, and when I made it clear that the election did not represent the hearts or minds of many citizens, and that the most recent election removed many corrupt politicians, they seemed to better understand what was occurring in the US.

  63. Lajet Says:

PRIOR PSOT: So far in my lifetime, I haven’t found anyone that I would honestly compare to Hitler. Hopefully it will stay that way.

RESPONSE: I haven’t met anyone I would compare to having done waht Hitler has done. My concern is no one predicted Hitler would do that before he did it either.

I suggest anyone who is CERTAIN that Sarah Palin isn’t likely to fool us once she gets power, I highly recommend The Last Supper (1996) with Cameron Diaz, Ron Elard, Courtney Vance. It’s a low-budget indie film. Very intertaining, intellectually engaging with an ending that kicks you in in the solar plexis (which is not hinted at in the synopsis on Amazon.) Amazon’s description isn’t inaccurate, but doesn’t do it justice. It is one of my top films, becasue of hte message, and the effectness of delivering the message.

Now, I truly don’t think Palin will do what Hitler did (but how do I know?). I do think it’s very possible she will take us in directions we can’t imagine and don’t want to imagine. Who would think that ANYONE would charge rape victims for a rape kit! Name one other crime in which the victim has to pay for evidence collection. Who thought she would fire people for having an affair (with the wife of a good friend of Palin’s). Fire a librarian for not banning certain books (and remember, these books weren’t ordered by the ACLU, they were ordered by a librarian that lives in the very red state community, and who was sufficiently admired that about 100 residents publicly went to bat for her. Mock community organizers (I didn’t think mocking was very Christian.) Believes the Alaska pipeline is God’d will. Calls herself a reformer who goes against “the good ole boys” but can’t decide whether or not she should endorse Ted Stevens. I could go on.

  64. Kelly Says:

Lajet – you have done your homework on Ms. Palin. I hope you work for the New York Times.

    This was my Netflix line-up:
    1-Cuba
    2-CHE: Rise and Fall
    3-Che
    4-The Hidden Fuhrer: Hitler’s Sexuality
    5-Charlie Wilson’s War
    6-The Fog of War
    7-Desert Bayou
    8-Hurricane on the Bayou
    9-War and Peace
    10-The Grapes of Wrath

I am not kidding. I had Hitler in before this discussion. Now I have The Last Supper and Best Friends in my one and two spot. Can’t wait.

  65. rainlillie Says:

I posted on my blog a few weeks ago about her charging rape victims for their rape kits. I just think when we use the word “Hitler” to describe someone, it diminishes Hitler’s atrocities IMO. Yes, I believe Palin is an extremist, but I also believe that she will never acquire the type of power and the type of following that Hitler had.

  66. GraceKelly Says:

    Lajet;

    Excellent background research. Thank you.

  67. Lajet Says:

PRIOR POST: I just think when we use the word “Hitler” to describe someone, it diminishes Hitler’s atrocities IMO.

RESPONSE: I think I understand your point and it is worth considering. I agree that discribing someone who hasn’t been (that) evil as “Hitler” diminishes Hitler’s atrocities.

However, I don’t see myself as calling her “like Hitler.” What I find scary is that her ascendancy looks familiar to that of Hitler’s ascendancy. I’ll admit it’s a fine line. There have been through history charasmatic people who did great evil. Hitler is probably one of the worst (but not the worst). Most of these people were not elevated to such status and power because people thought they were evil. Rather, they general hid it behind a incredible charisma.

This is where I see the comparison. And it’s impossible to make the argument without picking someone who is destructive, because who cares if her ascendancy is similar to that of John Kennedy or Mother Teresa. Actually, that might be a reason to vote for her.

I don’t know that she is as evil as Hitler. I have been surprised far too often in my life by good people doing very bad things (some of them in my personal life). Power is amazingly seductive, and peer pressure is still amazingly strong even in adulthood. My comparison isn’t that she is as evil as Hitler; my comparison is that she is a charasmatic personality who shows indications that she may do very bad things if/when she gets the power.

  68. rainlillie Says:

I don’t think we’ll have to worry about her… People are catching on,

    http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/09/16/palin-favorability-fading/

I’m glad the Obama campaign has put the focus back where it should be on McCain.

  69. Kelly Says:

Well, it’s finally happened. Someone hacked Palin’s personal email.

(CNN) — John McCain’s campaign said Wednesday it has contacted “appropriate authorities” over a report that Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin’s personal e-mail had been hacked.

“This is a shocking invasion of the Governor’s privacy and a violation of law,” campaign manager Rick Davis said in a statement. “The matter has been turned over to the appropriate authorities and we hope that anyone in possession of these emails will destroy them. We will have no further comment.”

Palin has faced criticism for using a private e-mail account to conduct some state business — prompting critics to allege she was attempting to hide information from the public record.

    http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/

  70. Kelly Says:

Poll: McCain, Obama virtually tied in battleground states

    Florida: Obama 48, McCain 48
    Indiana: McCain 51, Obama 45
North Carolina: McCain 48, Obama 47
    Ohio: Obama 49, McCain 47
    Wisconsin: Obama 50, McCain 47

  71. Kelly Says:

    YES Gallup

    Obama 47%
    McCain 45%

    Back in the lead! YES!

  72. msroncon Says:

    Beverly,

I agaree with you on M. Rodriquez. I so did not like her interview that I turned the channel and caught the rest of Hoda and Kathie Lee.

I have seen interviews with her before, and she is rude and mouthy.

  73. Beverly Says:

Thank you msroncon. I should have changed the channel too …

  74. Ann Says:

To anyone who was offended by my post, I was not suggesting Americans are stupid - not at all. I think you are the inventors of popular culture, media etc. etc. and the world admires and looks up to you. I get annoyed that in a country with such a large population with millions of smart & articulate people, the ones who end up at the top (Bush, Palin etc.) are the runts of the litter - HOW DOES THIS KEEP HAPPENING? Please make it stop!

  75. Kelly Says:

Ann I agree - and Thank You for those words.

I watched Lajet’s THE LAST SUPPER last night and again, at this moment- and I think the reason the ‘runts’ rule is too little action on behalf of good-natured, good-willed, socially-conscious, environmentally-aware, moral, honest Americans and, we also tend to play by the rule book.

Liars and cheaters are often the first to cross the finish line…they are, after all, driven by greed.

Watch The Last Supper - I am now prepared to have Rush Limbaugh the Bigot over for drinks.

Lajet: I didn’t’ realize how easily I fit into a category!!!!!! Makes one think about one’s role in creating what one despises most.

  76. Raylene Says:

msroncon, I have no idea what show you were watching but MR was in no way rude nor mouthy at all. In my opinion she came off intelligent, polite, cheerful albeit perhaps a little nervous. They all seemed to enjoy her. Ironically every woman on The View is mouthy and rude, yet this actress was the one only one on the couch that was NOT those things.

Just because she didn’t react how you wanted her to regarding a subject that is probably thrown in her face every single day (the DUI issue) doesn’t mean she has a problem. I found her very articulate by the way. Her explanations were quite accurate and intelligent. What on earth is inarticulate about bringing up corporations and how they dominate legislature? She clearly knew what she was talking about but was likely just nervous. In fact I just caught a new interview with her.

    http://www.cinemablend.com/new/Interview-Michelle-Rodriguez-Of-Battle-In-Seattle-10255.html

  77. Lajet Says:

glad you liked the movie Kelly.

I would add one more reason to you list of why evil people can prevail - most of us can’t fathom someone being that evil, so we don’t protect against it. We aren’t on the lookout for it. We don’t recognize the signs (heck, I’m not even sure if there are signs to look for.)
