The View September 18th Recap: Dennis Haysbert

by

dennis-haysbert.jpg The View today consisted of the full panel again. Did anyone else notice that Elisabeth Hasselbeck took a deep breath before they started hot topics? At first I thought it was because they were going to mention the Barry Manilow controversy, but it was not brought up.

The first important, pressing topic was whether Britney Spears is going to lose custody of her children. Her former body guard said that he saw her walking around naked in front of the kids. Sherri said that she walks around nude in front of her son, who is two-and-a-half. He points at her and says “Mommy, boobies!” She said that she doesn’t know when it starts to be inappropriate to be naked in front of her son. Joy Behar said that she thinks that it is worse if a father walks around naked in front of little girls. (Anyone else wonder why they only mentioned the “naked in front of the kids” issue and not the fact that the bodyguard reportedly said that Britney used drugs, maybe even around the children? That is obviously a bigger issue than being naked).

The American Civil Liberties Union is supporting Senator Craig and asserting that he did not do anything illegal. Elisabeth pointed out that the ACLU is often supporting questionable groups like Neo-nazis protesting in a Jewish community. Whoopi said that the ACLU makes sure that everyone has the same rights and they defend nazis so that people like Whoopi can be free to do her act. If you want to read the brief filed by the ACLU on behalf of the senator, click here. (PDF)

The next topic was whether the trait of “doing good to others” is a learned behavior. Whoopi believes that it is a learned behavior, while Elisabeth said that it is a gift from God, but may come at different ages. This morphed into a discussion about why Sherri Shepherd does not believe in evolution. Sherri said that God created us with a moral compass and it did not evolve.

Whoopi said that God created the universe and then it evolved. She said that you cannot have one without the other. She then asked Sherri if she believes that the world is flat. Sherri said that she has never thought about whether the earth is flat and if her son asks her if the world is round or flat, they will have to go to the library. Whoopi said that if you believe, from science, that the world is round, then you should believe science regarding evolution.

Elisabeth said that you have to research things to know them to be fact. Joy said that we do not need to reinvent the wheel: the world is round and dinosaurs roamed the Earth. Joy looked really frustrated listening to Sherri. Did anyone else notice that?

Barbara said that things can change, but that does not mean that God did not create it.

They next talked about Joy’s new book, which is called When You Need a Lift: But Don’t Want to Eat Chocolate, Pay a Shrink, or Drink a Bottle of Gin. It teaches you how to get out of a bad mood. It documents how certain famous people get out of bad moods. Joy goes shopping and talks a lot to get out of a bad mood. She then asked each of her co-hosts how they get out of bad moods.

Elisabeth: She goes to a drug store and buys sample sizes of products like toothpaste.
Sherri: She drinks a cup of tea and reads a trashy romance novel.
Barbara: She goes pulls the covers over her head in the fetal position.
Whoopi: She levitates.

They talked about how during Sally Field’s Emmy acceptance speech, producers cut away when she said a word not allowed on television. Barbara explained that you can say “God” on television and you can say “damn,” you just cannot say them together.

Joy said that soap operas are on all day and are the most pornographic thing on television, so why can’t you say those two words together? Whoopi said that she is not allowed to say “bitch” or other curse words on the show because it is in her contract.

Dennis Haysbert appeared on the show to promote his television show The Unit. He has a 16-year-old son and a 13-year-old daughter. He said that his son curses all the time.

The episodes of the The Unit are based on the experience of a former Delta Force member. Dennis said that he has to do things on the show that he would never do in real life, like rock climbing. He said that when the camera rolls, he is not scared anymore.

He said that it probably did not hurt Barack Obama that Dennis played a Black president on 24. He said that people still call him Mr. President because of that role, even secret service personnel that he encountered when he went to the Senate.

Megan Kelly from Fox News Channel appeared on the show to talk about the latest court cases in the news. She talked about O.J. Simpson’s recent arrest. Barbara asked, “How could he be so dumb?” Megan said that he is a bully. Whoopi wants to know if he is being tried based on what happened in the past or what happened in this instance.

The next case they discussed was the disappearance of Madeline McCann and how her parents are now suspects. Megan said that the case against them is very weak, although there is something there. The police found her DNA in a rental car that the parents rented after her disappearance. Whoopi asked why everyone was so fascinated with the case and is it because the parents are doctors and Madeline is a cute little white girl? Barbara said it is because they “made such a point of it all over the world.” Whoopi said that everyone bought into it, though.

  2. Stephanie Says:

I didnt really expect them to discuss the Manilow situation but I kind of hoped that they would.

Had this been a situation involving Rosie, it would be EVERYWHERE. Not only that, but it would be negative towards her. I found a website where they mentioned this piece of “news” and the tite: “Is Barry Manilow lying about View boycott?”. So clearly he’s the bad guy. Not only that, but it goes on to say that he has a close relationship with Rosie AND sources say he’s trying to “create buzz about his new cd”. Ummm ok.

Anyways, about the show, I find that the hosts discuss topics on a very surface level. And I thought it was annoying how they came back from commercial with Sherri reading a line about how nice it is that they can discuss issues without getting mad at each other. Yeah I guess that happens when you dont discuss anything important, besides its easy to sense tension even when the hosts are all smiling. They should keep that in mind.

OMG! Sherri thinks the world could be flat..LMAO!! Funny how EH didn’t mention how the ACLU defended pill popper Rush.

  4. Sandy Says:

I liked today’s show. I didn’t expect them to discuss Barry.
As for Britany, I believe I read that her body guard also stated that he saw her use drugs in fron of the children. (Although that was not discussed today. In which case, if true, I agree it may be better for her not to have custody of the children right now.

  5. Random Musings Says:

I have the feeling that not only Fox is using censorship. I think BW and Bill Geddes are. The discussions on The View are not as free-wheeling as they were originally and therefore the program is not as interesting.

I also find it interesting that Barry Manilow is being made out to be the bad guy ….. as if EH’s opinions and behavior are to be tolerated by all of us whether we agree with her or not. I find her very offensive.

Sherrie is not impressing me either. I find her to be narrow-minded on some issues. Her intellect and EH’s intellect aren’t huge even if they ae added together! I can’t believe the comment on the world being flat! Where was she in elementary school…or hasn’t she seen pictures of the cure of the Earth from space. Ya gotta be kidding!

  6. kc Says:

Has Sherri wondered how one can sail or fly around the world if the Earth is flat? Oy. And Sherri must do her research by reading The Bible For Dummies (Who Will Believe Anything)…

  7. Sandy Says:

    Is the Bible for dummies?

  8. Stacee Says:

When I read the recap about Sherri was unsure if the world is flat I thought surely she was joking. I just watched and was surprised to find she was serious. She would have to check the library if her son asks if the world is flat? Wow.

I enjoyed Dennis on the show. He has a nice soothin voice and a strong physical stature. He seems like a very likable guy.

All in all, an ok show. The hosts did seem a bit terse and the smiles seemed a bit forced at times. It would be very interesting to be a fly on the studio walls…

  9. Ann Says:

The most annoying phrase in the world is: is “A gift from God”. Why doesn’t this fabulous God “gift” some food to the starving in Africa? Sherri is ignorant - at least when Star used to go on about her God-stuff she was educated and could hold her end of the argument up.

  10. Eeeeew Says:

The gossip blogs have been blasting Sherri Shepherd for her ridiculous response to Whoopi’s question as to whether or not the world is flat. They’ve even included the Youtube clip:

    http://www.jossip.com/whoopi-goldberg/its-one-thing-to-be-religious-its-another-thing-to-be-a-complete-moron-20070918/

  11. Eeeeew Says:

Difference between Sherri and Star is obvious- one actually graduated from college and law school. I question if the other even graduated from high school.

I did not think that there was another person who could possibly make EH actually look somewhat intelligent, but Sherri is the one. Yikes, that says volumes. The tragedy is that they portray the younger generation, MY generation, like we are a bunch of airheads. There are so many smart, intelligent and accomplished women in this world, how did BW manage to hire two of the most stupid and talentless people on the planet- and put them on the SAME show? It’s a joke.

  12. Ken Says:

Well I don’t knock Sherri. I am thinking she nervously answered the question because she felt intellectually challenged and anxious to defend her faith. We all know that Sherri isn’t the brightest person out there. But, I think she is articulate, entertaining, humorous and brings a “real” person’s perspective to the table.

I will defend Sherri and say she has relied on Religion (and a bit of laughter, lol) to get her through some hardships in life, which was a priority than learning about science or any school can offer. [Growing up unprivileged and as a single parent] To refute a belief that she claims got her through those trials and tribulations can probably be difficult for her. She is at a different stage in her life from all of us.

I don’t think probing Sherri will work to get her to think differently. I felt the co-hosts could’ve did a better job of presenting scientific facts that might get her to think differently about evolution. I think she felt some pressure there to defend her faith. Some Christians tend to be rather headstrong in their beliefs.

I think Religion is a topic that creates a very tense mood at “The View.” I also think Babs creates a very tense mood at the table. LOL! I totally agree with Rosie when she meant that she needs to retire. I am getting so annoyed when Barbara is on the program because she seem to nitpick at things.

Christians rely on pure faith but when it comes to defending their beliefs with factual scientific evidence remains a sketchy and gray area. They feel that everything created in the Earth is God-inspired through a “son” Jesus Christ. No matter what! This creates the ignorance or intolerance of other things such as scientific proven theories about the creation of the Earth, etc.

  13. cynthia Says:

sherri was kidding. i cannot believe anyone would think otherwise. she isn’t as dumb as some would think. so far her only error, as i see it, was bringing her personal life with her philandering hubby to the table. it didn’t merit mention but then…perhaps some folks like to know that sort of thing.

wow! they discussed religion and didn’t lose their cool!! i was stunned when the subject came up and thought… “oh oh, here we go”.

i could address the “God supplying food” issue but this isn’t the place nor the time to do so.

still think this is a great site. keep up the good work.

  14. Sandy Says:

I enjoyed reading Ken & Cynthia’s comments, mainly because it’s nice to read positive, and non condemning things once in a while. (not only about the view and it’s host, but about anything).
As a Christian and speaking for myself, I believe that God created human life. There is no, nor will there ever be any scientific proof presented to me that would change my thought concerning that. It’s a matter of faith, trust, and belief, not science.

  15. Stacee Says:

According to Sherri, she was not kidding. She said she was flustered and confused.

When she was talking yesterday, she sounded serious. She did not smile or say haha. Her tone was serious, her demeanor was serious. So it is perfectly understandable why some of us would think she was not joking when she said what she did.

  16. Ken Says:

Thanks for the nice words Sandy.

Stacee, you’re right about Sherri not kidding because she clarified it on today’s (Sept. 19th) show. Like you said. I also hear where you are coming from in the latter half of your answer.

However, I personally think it is a bit harsh when some folks make comparisons to her to Star Jones and the way they voice their stance on Christianity. For example, saying she has barely had an elementary school background and other ridiculous comments relating to ‘non-schooling’ based on one answer for one episode.

I think the hosts on the panel can never be perfect on “The View” because the show is spontaneous and their always constantly facing scrutiny. It took Sherri one nervous answer for many to get on her case. It had to come sooner or later!

She has made heartfelt viewpoints on other episodes and gained applause from the audience many times.

It seems like folks in society “wait in the wings” for people to mess up. Really sad! Like on that silly Jossip site which says that Barbara should be regretting her new hire. LOL, for one answer in her second week as a permanent co-host?

I just think it is disgusting for a person to write that and it shows a lack of respect for a human being.

It is silly to think that some folks think her viewpoints isn’t entitled to be heard or to be vocal about the way she sees things in life just because she didn’t accomplish a college degree. *rolleyes*

I personally think Sherri is doing a marvelous job of being real with her opinions based on her own life experiences and making the show very entertaining and that’s what is most important for this television show at this point, IMO.

  17. Ken Says:

Note: I also don’t want to knock education through the formal route, because I think it is a good thing.

I just believe that some folks learn better through life others learn it through school.

  18. cynthia Says:

    thank you sandy.

  19. rainlillie Says:

I believe that God created all life including the apes we evolved from.
