The View September 19th Recap: Gloria Estefan
Today’s episode of The View was without Barbara Walters. They started the show talking about the Barry Manilow controversy. Whoopi Goldberg stated that Barbara and Bill Geddie have had a policy since the beginning of the show that if “you don’t sit with one, you’ll sit with none.” She said that they have talked and “made peace” and that Barry is going to be on the show at some point in the future. I found it interesting that Whoopi made this announcement, rather than Barbara when she was on the show yesterday. Whoopi said, “This is coming from Barbara” and Bill Geddie, yet they had Whoopi say it for them? I wonder why?
Joy Behar said that there are people who do not agree with her politics or Whoopi’s politics and don’t want to be on with them, so they aren’t on the show, either. She said “We practice free speech here everyday.” Elisabeth said that the “beauty of this is that we operate, I think, as courageous women who sit here everyday and love one another through our differences, not despite them and I think that’s a wonderful thing.”
The next topic was Sherri Shepherd’s comment yesterday that she never thought about whether the world was round or flat. She said that it was hard for her because she has never had to defend her religious beliefs in public. She said that yesterday she was “really nervous” and had a “senior brain poofy moment” and just did not hear the question right. She said that she knows that the earth is round.
Whoopi next brought up the subject of how a younger woman and an older man are reportedly a good match because it keeps the species going. Elisabeth said, “See Barry? We could get along very well, Barry.” Joy said it is better for women to marry younger men, because women live longer and then they can “both drop dead at the same time.” Sherri said that younger women are often overly impressed with older men because they have a house, car, etc.
The next topic they discussed was the Jena 6. In Jena, Louisiana, six Black students were expelled and charged with second degree murder conspiracy. It started when a Black student sat under a tree at the school that was designated “whites only.” The school said that they were permitted to sit under the tree. The next day they were nooses hanging from the tree. A Black student got beaten up by some white students and the students were only suspended. The District Attorney reportedly told the Black students to let it go and that he “could change your life with the stroke of a pen.” Several white students were later brandishing weapons. Later a white student got beaten up by some black students. He went to the hospital, was released that night and went to a party. The next day, six Black students were charged with attempted murder. The charges have since been reduced to aggravated second degree battery.
Whoopi said there is also “the O.J. stuff” and asked if we are now looking at race again like we did 25 or 50 years ago? Elisabeth said that it also extends to missing persons cases in that we always hear in the news about missing white women and girls, but not Black women or children. She said that she grew up not really knowing that racism existed because her family loved everyone. Joy said that even today neighborhoods are segregated by race.
Sherri said that she is trying to raise her son to be confident and to believe that he can accomplish anything. So what does she say to him about the fact that someone cannot sit under a certain tree because they are Black? Sherri said that she is going to a Republican debate at Morgan State, a predominately Black university, and many of the major candidates are not going to show up. Whoopi pointed out that many of them did not attend the Hispanic forum, either. Joy asked whether they were “all at a Klan meeting at the same time?”
Elisabeth is on the cover of Pregnancy magazine and has several photos inside as well. If you want to see the cover and one of the other photos from the magazine, check out Celebrity Babies.
Alicia Silverstone did a nude photo shoot for PETA. Elisabeth said that Alicia called her after people said that she snubbed Elisabeth the last time she was on the show and did not shake her hand. Elisabeth said that she did not even notice at the time that Alicia walked by her because she was distracted because it was a “heated” day. If you did not see that episode, you can see the screenshot photos here.
They started talking about how Joy was attracted to Dennis Haysbert, who was a guest yesterday. Joy said that she never had a Black boyfriend and Whoopi told her that Dennis would make a nice “brother starter kit.” The rest of the conversation involved them all giggling a lot and talking about Denzel Washington and Morgan Freeman.
Gloria Estefan appeared on the show to promote her latest album. She said that one day, Denzel Washington was staying near her house and she must have lost 10 pounds that day because she kept jogging past his house waiting for him to come out. She just turned fifty and has been married for 29 years. She had a disco-themed birthday and Perez Hilton was a guest.
Gloria recently had a concert at a bull ring in Spain and another concert in front of 150,000 people in Holland. Her new album was the first time in history that a Spanish album debuted in Holland at number one. Her album is called “90 Millas” or “90 Miles,” because there are 90 miles between the southern most point in Key West, Florida and Cuba. She said that she thinks that Fidel Castro is huddled up with Walt Disney somewhere in a freezer.
Martine Reardon, executive vice president of marketing for Macy’s appeared on the show to talk about fall fashions. Here are the top trends that she mentioned:
Trench Coats
Cropped Jackets
Sweater Coats
Metallics
Casual Chic
Retro
If you want to know more about the fashions that were mentioned on the show, check out ABC’s official recap here.
To close the show, Gloria Estefan sang the song “No Llores” from her new album.
The View, Gloria Estefan, Sherri Shepherd, Joy Behar, Elisabeth Hasselbeck, Whoopi Goldberg, Barry Manilow, evolution, Jena 6, Alicia Silverstone

Another good recap, Winnie! Thanks
I liked that EH set the record straight regarding Alicia Silverstone.
September 19th, 2007 at 9:59 pm
Sherri could have come up with a better one! But, if that is what she says, well. Joy is always complaining or bragging about how curly her hair is. Oh, and she compared Republicans to Klan members. When Doro Bush went to promote her book, Rosie and Joy were noticeably absent from the panel. On their own choosing, I´m sure. Curious, EH just now clarifying the Alicia incident. But her and Rosie were ´in communication a lot´after that day. Whoppi is doing her job as mod. Luv Gloria.

I like Sherri but she should really separate religion from facts, or else her tenure on The View will be short and embarrassing. Elisabeth irks me for being so fake that she lives in her own little world where the unpleasant things are made nice again, and sadly she seems to have enablers sitting all around her.
September 20th, 2007 at 6:59 am
Sherri knows the world is round only after the bloggers reminded her that it was. Whoopi is like the black version of Joy, and Sherri is like Elizabeth. So much for diversity.
My favorite moment was when Whoopi reminded Joy that Africa was only a row boat away from Sicily, so she shouldn’t be surprised by her coarse hair. Joy said she wasn’t Sicilian, but she totally understood the message.
I found the show enjoyable for the first time in awhile.
September 20th, 2007 at 8:29 am
Great show! It seems like the show is more enjoyable when BW is not there. I love BS but it flows much betters. I love ELisabeth Hasselbeck! She is great on the show and one of the main reasons why I even watch the show! I think Elisabeth brings a lot to the table. The people who think she is stupid becuase she has morals is becuase they are the ones who don’t have any morals. What is wrong with having morals? Hello!
September 20th, 2007 at 9:00 am
What does it matter that Sherri now claims to believe the world is round. She is still an idiot who does not believe in evolution.
No one said EH is an idiot because she has morals. She is an idiot because she is a status quo enforcer who is ill-informed and believes everything the Bush propaganda team tells her. She can also be pretty judgmental for such a moral person.
September 20th, 2007 at 10:01 am
LMAO! I don’t think EH is stupid, because she has morals I think she’s stupid because she’s uninformed. Take the morning after pill for instance.
I also don’t think she has very high morals, if she did she would understand that innocent people are suffering because of Bush’s policies.
She also proved how moral she was, when she embraced the people ( Faux News) who were unfairly attacking her friend. I don’t think she’s as naive and innocent as she pretends to be.
I watched her a few times take Rosie’s words and twist them around. Then later on if you watched Faux News, they would all repeat the things that EH said to Rosie. .. Like does Rosie think our troops are terrorists?
September 20th, 2007 at 5:56 pm
JonA: I don’t like EH because she is rude to everyone who disagrees with her. And I don’t think EH is a very good example of a person with morals.
September 20th, 2007 at 6:00 pm
I tried to watch today’s show, but I got really bored after a few minutes because it seems that The View is no longer a show where interesting, relevant topics are discussed, but is instead a show where the hosts just sit around and kiss up to one another. I turned the show off at the point where EH was telling Sherri how she thought she handled the “world is flat” discussion from the day before well. The last thing The View needs is two poorly informed people who spend their time sitting around congratulating one anohter for being poorly informed.
September 20th, 2007 at 7:43 pm
Sherri and Elisabeth are two examples of people who let others tell them what to think. I think that’s why they come up blank or try to equivocate when the pressure is on.
September 20th, 2007 at 9:54 pm
Rainlillie, Oh Rainlillie, where do I even start???
“LMAO! I don’t think EH is stupid, because she has morals I think she’s stupid because she’s uninformed. Take the morning after pill for instance.”
I can’t even imagine what you are referring to here….What about the morning-after pill?? Do you even know what it is?? The morning-after pill IS an abortion pill. Conception takes place when a sperm fertilizes an egg–that is scientific fact; no moral judgment needed. The morning after pill prevents that fertilized egg–that future baby–from implanting in the uterus, as nature intended, and thus, an ‘abortion’ takes place. So EH, who is Catholic, I believe, and doesn’t believe in abortion being a ‘choice’ since it kills a baby (and you don’t have to be Catholic to be anti-abortion), says as much–WHY IS THAT SO BAD???? I really don’t understand why more people aren’t against the morning-after pill. Now, birth control pills are entirely different, since they prevent conception from occurring, but once conception HAS occurred, to prevent the natural progression is immoral. Perhaps it is more ‘tasteful’ than partial birth abortion, but the end result is the same!
“She also proved how moral she was, when she embraced the people ( Faux News) who were unfairly attacking her friend. I don’t think she’s as naive and innocent as she pretends to be.”
Again, if Rosie were her friend (that she then was not defending) then why the HELL is it that EH tried to extend the olive branch, and Rosie not only refused it, but has trashed EH endlessly, including in her tell-all book??? Gee, with friends like that,…we all know what the rest of THAT sentence is!!!!
September 21st, 2007 at 2:57 am
The Morning after pill ISN’T an abortion pill. It’s a pill that STOPS the sperm from reaching the egg. Which means the egg is NEVER fertilized.
A little research could have told you that. Abortion isn’t murder, abortion is LEGAL and last I checked, murder is illegal.
I’m pro-choice and pro life, I personally could never have an abortion, but I think other would have a RIGHT to choose what’s best for them.
Eh and Rosie were never friends, EH is the kind of woman that could never really be friends with anyone. One of of cast mates on Survivor found that out. She’s an opportunist and although I like Rosie, she was a fool for believing that EH was sincere in their friendship.
She’s nothing but a fake and a fraud! She’s not as innocent and pure as she tries to come across. People like her are no different than Muslim extremists who would like to force their religious beliefs on others.
September 21st, 2007 at 6:56 am
If EH doesn’t want to take the morning-after pill, use birth control, or have an abortion, that’s fine. That’s HER business.
What is NOT fine is EH making this decision for other women. It is none of her business what other women choose to do in terms of their own family planning.
I too am pro-life and pro-choice. EH on the other hand is pro-life and anti-choice for ALL women. “The decider.” That’s the difference between us: My stand on this does not bully other women into having abortions, using birth control, or taking the morning-after pill. EH’s stand on this, however, would bully women–by law–to do things her way. It is immoral to criminalize women for making a family-planning choice that EH does not personally agree with.
September 21st, 2007 at 7:03 am
I would love to see the passages from Rosie’s upcoming book about fame where Rosie discusses EH, so I can see for myself if I think she is “trashing” her. The only passage I have seen that’s been leaked in the press is the one that says she has the opposite views from Rosie, is a “fist in frill,” which Rosie says she likes, and is as polite as Rosie is not. That doesn’ t sound like trash-talk to me. Some of the tabloids who have quoted that passage have edited it down and used their own words to tell readers that Rosie is bashing EH. The Rupert Murdoch-owned rag “The New York Post” is a perfect example of this biased reporting. Of course we all know that the Post is part of the Fox News corporate family.
Where else has Rosie “trashed EH endlessly”? I’d like to see the sources on this. I read Rosie’s blog daily and in the Q&A section when people write in about EH, I’ve never seen a bit of trash from Rosie’s keyboard about Elisabeth. In fact, she defended EH when someone said EH wasn’t really an artist. Rosie said indeed EH is. Sounds pretty nice, to me.
When did EH extend the olive branch? Where’s the source for this? I’d love to read all about it.
September 21st, 2007 at 9:16 am
OhMyGosh: I believe what the other poster was referring to with the mention of the morning after pill was that EH went on air a few months ago and explained what the morning after pill does and she explained it wrong. She didn’t even bother to do five minutes of research to figure out what it really does. And, unfortunately, your post just demonstrated why it’s so dangerous for her to be handing out false information like that, becuase some people believe what she’s saying even though it’s false. I have no problem with her being opposed to the use of the morning after pill for her own life, but I do have a problem with her trying to make that decision for someone else, and I have a huge problem with her going on air giving out false information about what the pill itself actually does.
September 21st, 2007 at 9:27 am
OHMYGOSH: Actually birth control pills are not totally different from the morning after pill - the morning after pill is simply a birth control pill that has a higher does of hormones in it. Next time do some research before you start insulting others.
September 21st, 2007 at 10:48 am
I HAVE done some research, thank you very much. But I will say that we are BOTH right, in that in some cases fertilization is prevented, BUT IF FERTILIZATION HAS OCCURRED, THEN IMPLANTATION IS PREVENTED. So maybe you all should “do some research”, too…
http://www.morningafterpill.org/mapinfo1.htm
How do emergency contraception/morning-after pills work?
The emergency contraceptive/morning-after pill has three possible ways in which it can work (as does the regular birth control pill):
“Ovulation is inhibited, meaning the egg will not be released;
The normal menstrual cycle is altered, delaying ovulation; or
It can irritate the lining of the uterus so that if the first and second actions fail, and the woman does become pregnant, the human being created will die before he or she can actually attach to the lining of the uterus.
In other words, if the third action occurs, her body rejects the living human embryo, and the child will die. This result is a chemical abortion. (Abortion is an act of direct killing that takes the life of a living preborn human being—a life that begins at fertilization.)”
Also, from Wikipedia (under “Emergency Contraception”):
“Emergency contraceptive pills (ECPs)—sometimes simply referred to as emergency contraceptives (ECs) or the “morning-after pill”—are drugs that act both to prevent ovulation or fertilization and possibly post-fertilization implantation of a blastocyst (embryo). ECPs are distinct from medical abortion methods that act after implantation.[1]“

Interesting reading from the link above. It should be noted that the site is actually http://www.all.org/ (American Life League) so it’s not surprising they would use such language as “and the woman does become pregnant, the human being created will die before he or she can actually attach to the lining of the uterus.” and “her body rejects the living human embryo, and the child will die.”
Here is the actual info on the ‘Morning After’ Pill:
-It could kill all of the sperm after ejaculation.
-It could prevent the fertilized egg from implanting in the uterus.
-It could either prevent or delay the release of the egg. Levonorgestrel takes this third path.
s was mentioned above already, this is similar to birth control pills, but with This is NOT an abortion pill, as was claimed in a few posts above.
September 21st, 2007 at 11:41 am
I have a friend who is married and she and her husband have two children. They use birth control and because she was on an antibiotic, she was afriad that it may not have worked.
She talked to her doctor about her options; she could wait it out or she could use the morning after pill, this was before the pill was available over-the-counter.
She asked the doctor is it the same thing as terminating a pregnancy and he told her no.
I’ve read stories where pharmacists refuse to fill scripts for birth control pills, because of their religious convictions. Some women who were sexually assaulted and taken to hospitals with religious affiliations, weren’t told about emergency contraceptives.
It’s fine for people to be for or against abortion, but at least enter the debate in an honest way, without distorting information. I feel this is what EH was doing during that discussion. If I recall correctly Joy tried to tell her the facts about the pill.
September 21st, 2007 at 12:10 pm
“(A)s was mentioned above already, this is similar to birth control pills, but with This is NOT an abortion pill, as was claimed in a few posts above.”
For the record, I DO realize the morning-after pill is NOT an abortion pill like RU 486, in that it will NOT abort an already-implanted embryo…
But I think we have covered this topic enough–this really isn’t the forum–but I do appreciate the dialogue.
September 21st, 2007 at 12:35 pm
I didn’t see the show where Elisabeth talked about the morning after pill, so I can’t comment about if her information was correct or not. I do feel it is important to give correct information on topics like this, especially in a public format.
I am glad that by the time I got to the bottom of this list the correct information was given.
Someone wrote that Sherri is an idiot because she doesn’t believe in evolution…I take great offence to that. It’s a religious belief, and that makes no one an idiot.
As far as Rosie and Elisabeth,..and I like them both..I think they both made mistakes. Sadly I think they let their political views get in the way. I have heard some say it wasn’t about political views, it was about friendship, but really all in all their differences up to the end was mainly about politics.
And to me that is so sad. We all need to come together and work together. that’s what I wish could and would happen, but again sadly I don’t think that’s going to happen, not in any near time future anyway.

I tried to find a video clip online of the morning after pill discussion, but it appears they were taken down by youtube.
If anyone comes across it, let me know so I can post it!

I found this on youtube but I cant find the longer version. I’ll keep looking though

OMG, I found a hilarious youtube ‘take’ on that meltdown. I don’t know who the guy is, but he re-enacts the whole morning-after hot topic, including every one’s role in it. It is pretty darn funny, and as far as I remember, very accurate. It may suffice to get the idea of what that discussion was like if the original is gone forever!

September 21st, 2007 at 5:05 pm
“but really all in all their differences up to the end was mainly about politics.”
I totally disagree it was about friendship. Rosie couldn’t understand why EH didn’t acknowledge that she was being unfairly attacked by the talking heads on Fox. She thought that EH had gotten to know her and understood how she felt.
September 21st, 2007 at 9:20 pm
“Someone wrote that Sherri is an idiot because she doesn’t believe in evolution…I take great offence to that. It’s a religious belief, and that makes no one an idiot.”
Yes, I wrote that. Saying I don’t believe in evolution is just as ridiculous as saying I don’t believe the Earth is round. There is plenty of scientific evidence for evolution just as there is plenty of scientific evidence for the Earth being round. To ignore the evidence, whether for religious reasons or whatever, is to be willfully ignorant.

Ellyn: That’s Michael Buckley from “What The Buck” show. He comments on (pokes fun at) The View every so often.

Sandy: if your religion tells you evolution is not true, your religion is ridiculous and blatantly incorrect about how the world works. If you let one particular interpretation of your religion trump evidence and rational thinking, you are also ridiculous.
September 22nd, 2007 at 8:27 am
Ellyn,
Thanks for posting that clip. It was hilarious!

Something tells me that I really shouldn’t respond, but I’m going to.
Not only does my religion tell me that Human life did not evolve from other species, science has not yet been able to prove that it did, not successfully. Yes characteristics of life form has evolved, and probably in humans as well, however it hasn’t been proven that human species came from another species. Now that was as of about 15 years ago. I haven’t kept up with scientific developments.
My comment was that someone is not an idiot because they believe and trust in their faith. I think that someone who doesn’t have a strong faith would not understand that. And I would NOT call or condemn anyone for their own personal beliefs, religious or otherwise.
September 22nd, 2007 at 12:54 pm
If I didn’t believe in evolution, I also wouldn’t believe in man made things like medications. I would think that a sick loved one could pray and get better, I wouldn’t trust science at all.
I think God created the apes that humans evolved from. Just like a sick person should take man made medication and pray to be healed, things don’t have to always be one or the other.
September 22nd, 2007 at 1:28 pm
“Just like a sick person should take man made medication and pray to be healed, things don’t have to always be one or the other.”
Rainlillie: My thoughts exactly.
When oh when did things become this way with regard to Christianity? I’ll tell you when: It’s been the past couple of decades when the Christian conservative movement went beyond cable-access TV to penetrate mainstream venues. Whether she knows it or not, Sherrie has been exposed to and influenced by this. There’s no other answer, for me, when I think about my background.
I grew up with a slew of heartland Christians (none of whom went to college, none of whom were intellectuals–though they were filled with intelligence and common sense; and they were filled with compassion, love, and decency) who are rolling their eyes in heaven, if there is a heaven, at the thought of not believing in evolution. They are also rolling their eyes whenever someone says Republicans or conservatives are the only ones with core values or real morals.
I’ve heard in recent years, since Bush’s rein, Christian conservatives eat their own in the sense that they trash not only Catholics (an old bogeyman) but traditional main-stream denominations that aren’t blatantly conservative politically and that do not promote evangelizing or pushing their religion onto others. I have heard Falwell tell the spokesman for Sojourners, the liberal evangelical group, that he was certainly no “real” evangelical.” What a horrible thing to say to a fellow Christian. You’d think it would be good enough that they both believe in Christianitiy–but no, in today’s climate, there is only one brand of Christian beliefs that counts, and that is their way. It’s just another chorus to the “my way or the highway” zeitgeist that has been ushered in, developed, and broadcast by Bush and his gang of believers and enablers in the media.
This segment of Christianity has churned out books galore, pundits, TV and radio shows, all slowly and steadily reshaping how people think about things. Which is why in 2007 we are, as Joy put it, reinventing the wheel, talking about how the earth is indeed round and that you can believe in evolution AND have a belief in God.
It struck me that on the day Sherrie wanted to explain herself about the earth is flat comment, she said she’d never had to “defend her faith” in public. I thought that was odd, and I was a little annoyed. It’s as if to say everyone around her does not have faith. It’s not her faith she had to defend–it’s her belief that evolution doesn’t exist that she has to defend.
Geez louise. It is so frustrating.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU to the rapid-responders above who so quickly and deftly corrected the misinformation about the morning-after pill. You guys are great. Really appreciated the info that tells everyone about the source for some of the wrong info being from “the American Life League.”
If anyone has not seen the DVD for the PBS show about Shelby Knox, I highly recommend it for inspiration on this topic of how the people are misinformed or not informed about birth control. It’s called “The Education of Shelby Knox.” It’s a documentary about a very brave high schooler who worked her heart out to get the Lubbock, TX school system to teach sex ed in the schools (beyond “abstinence only is the ONLY way”). She not only had to contend with people who opposed her views, but people who gave up the fight, in order to just get along and not rock the boat. (Kind of like The View in this post-Rosie era.)
September 22nd, 2007 at 3:55 pm
I know that this isn’t a religious forum, so I am reluctant to say more, but..
It may surprise Peaches that I agree with her. While i do consider myself a conservative, because I agree with MANY of their ideals,…at least the older ones.
I also believe that religion has NO place in politics. Actually the Bible teaches you that you should not be involved in politics. And I don’t exactly like what “some” of the conservatives are doing with it either.
