The View September 5th Recap: Tim Gunn and Larry David
Day two of the new season started with the hosts all coming on stage wearing splashes of red. The two younger women had on red shoes. Whoopi Goldberg’s shoes reminded me of a cross between Dorothy’s ruby slippers and the wicked witch’s shoes.
Right off the bat, Whoopi said that on day one she managed to “step in it immediately. She said that she wanted to “reiterate . . . for everyone” that she was not condoning Michael Vick’s conduct or saying that he had done anything right. She said that she saw a sports program that talked about the history of dogfighting and how it can be part of someone’s upbringing and she brought that up on the show as a point of discussion. She said that somehow it was construed that she is “eating dogs and swinging them by the tail.” She added that she has lots of horses and cats that she loves. She pointed out that her point was that the role of upbringing in dogfighting needs to be investigated.
Whoopi seemed surprised that her words were edited by the news programs to say something that she did not intend. She obviously was not paying attention to what happened with Rosie O’Donnell last year if she was not expecting her words to be edited for rebroadcast on the tabloid shows.
Barbara Walters then announced that the fifth spot will be filled next Monday, September 10th! I have no definite idea of who it is. My speculation is Sherri Shepherd, but I could be wrong. I am happy that there will finally be some finality to the panel (at least until someone leaves or is fired in six months or something) and that Barbara Walters will go back to her occasional role, rather than an everyday one.
Senator Larry Craig said that he might not be resigning after all. Whoopi said that the most disgusting thing about the whole incident was that he touched the floor of the bathroom. Barbara expressed concern for him because his whole family’s life has been ruined. Joy said that the reason that people are going after him is because of the hypocrisy. Craig previously failed to support many gay rights issues. Elisabeth said that it is good that people are being held accountable.
Brad Pitt has been lamenting about getting older and “ugly.” Elisabeth said that he should not complain because he is with Angelina Jolie. She added that being with Jolie, though, could give someone a complex about their own appearance. Pitt has also said that he has embraced growing older. They conversation segued into whether John McCain is too old to be president. Whoopi announced that she would date him. Joy joked that she likes that McCain would consider her to be “jailbait.”
They talked about a new television show where teenagers who want to have children are giving a real baby to care for, then a toddler, then later an elderly person. Barbara said that it is ageism to say that it is so difficult to take care of an old person. Elisabeth expressed concern that being on a reality show is going affect your life, so you probably should not be taking a toddler out of their home and putting them on television. Joy said that she would not want a teenager to take care of her in her old age. Barbara mentioned for probably the fifth time that her daughter does not want to have children (and that the children at her camp are her children) so she got a dog because there won’t be any grandchildren.
Elisabeth announced that everyone in the audience was getting the DVD of Georgia Rule and they audience was less than enthused. Whoopi said, “Could there be any less applause?” The Barbara said, “Are we off camera?” and started to say something before she was told that they were still live. I wish that they had not told her, because I would love to know what she says when the camera is not on.
Larry David of Curb Your Enthusiasm appeared on the show. He said that he hates editing the show because he has to watch himself for eight hours a day. Joy said that she did a show with Larry in 1987 called “Way Off Broadway.” She joked that if she knew he was going to be a millionaire, she would have married him. They then showed a clip of the show, which showed a very young looking Joy, and Larry wearing a really bad toupee (for comedic effect).
Larry said that he hated stand-up because he was heckled. Joy said that he was not heckled and that he was a “comedian’s comedian.” He was surprised that Seinfeld was successful and was surprised again at the success of Curb Your Enthusiasm.
Barbara brought up the fact that Larry was going through a divorce and he started fake crying. He said that sometime in the future it might end up in the show.
Tim Gunn from Project Runway appeared on the show to promote his new show Tim Gunn’s Guide to Style. The show is based on his book Tim Gunn: A Guide to Quality, Taste & Style, and helps women find their style. Tim said that both Whoopi and Elisabeth “own their look,” because they are confident in what they are wearing. Tim complimented Whoopi on the aforementioned red shoes.
Tim has developed a shopping list for women:

Damn, I missed the show again today! All I got were a few tidbits from The View’s site. I didn’t see Tim Gunn or Larry David. I would have loved to see Larry especially. Were Babs & Joy insulted by Tim not praising them for their style? I wonder if he is the reason why they were all so color coordinated with one another today, as well as with the set. I thought that red, black, white, and cream combo was more interesting than their discussion. Whoopi’s strange shirt yesterday mesmerized me more than what anyone was saying. Not a good sign….
I was so disappointed that Joy was the only one to speak up at how the real sin and crime that Larry Craig committed has been that of a professional bigot toward gays, stifling their opportunity for civil rights and to be treated decently.
I guess I have my fingers crossed that at some point Whoopi will speak out more and pick up where Rosie left off. And if she doesn’t, we can always hope at least her costumes will keep us awake.
I loved Winnie’s comment about Babs mentioning, yet again, that her daughter doesn’t want children. Did she also bring up “yet another study” with an eyeroll?
I can live with Sherri Shepherd, but I’m praying it’s Kathy Griffin.

The show today had a little more pep, but overall I’d say still slow and uneasy.
I found the interview with Larry David to be quite weird and uncofortable. It seemed the like the ladies were unsure of how to interview him. The banter seemed off and I did not think there was any flow.
The comment from Elisabeth regarding Brad (something about keeping up with Angelina in bed? - not exactly those words but something like that) was just strange. I think even Barb found it an odd statement. I realize that was her stab at comedy and she was obviously trying to be funny, but I still thought it was dumb.
Tim Gunn was a nice guest. He complimented Elizabeth and Whoopi. Personally, I don’t find Whoopi’s style appealing but she does follow her own fashion style and that is refreshing. I did not like her red shoes (yuck), but to each their own.
I think Sheri will be the fifth host too.
I loved how the ladies coordinated their outfits. That was a nice respite from the gold-y backdrop. It (the backdrop) seemed garish yesterday but today seemed a little better.
All in all, an *ok* show.
Hope it picks up.

Yes, it looks like the new co-host will be Sherri Shepherd!

I was so hoping that Sherri would get the job as I thought she was great during her guest hosting spots. And while I am no great fan of Rosie’s, (particularly towards the last few months as she grew angrier and angrier), I must say that the first two days of this new season have been strange and rather boring. Sherri is just what this tired old show needs!

Seriously, Barbara really does repeat herself a LOT. And yes, Peaches, she did mention a poll and then said “everything’s a poll these days” with a roll of the eyes. Enough already! If you don’t like them, don’t bring them up!!
I also realized today another thing that annoys me about her. It always seems like she is staring at a monitor of herself throughout the show. When she’s talking, it appears she’s not making eye contact with her co-hosts or the audience, but a monitor off-screen.
As far as the new co-host, I’m really hoping for Kathy Griffin. Love her, and this show really needs some excitement like good ol’ Kath.

Whoopi is giving the show its charm back, IMO. I am glad I don’t have to cringe while watching the program. Especially last season with that Rosie and Elisabeth debate that still leaves me uneasy.
I disagree with the a previous poster and I do find Whoopi appealing. I didn’t really appreciate when Rosie was on because she was trying to make it her show. She always had an agenda and wanted to stir up debate about the Iraq war with Elisabeth. Everyone is entitled to their viewpoints about the Iraq war, but we should work on being counterproductive rather than being bully-ish about it.
Rosie was very emotional on last year’s View and didn’t know how to be a moderator IMO. One has to be able to listen to both arguments of the issue and put a spin on it to work towards solving the problem.

Sherri Shepherd is named the fifth co-host. It was in today’s Daily News.

I’m so sick of people bashing Rosie for standing up for the Pro-America anti-Bush people. Rosie wasn’t any more vocal than EH. People called Rosie a bully because she’s overweight, EH came across just as aggressive as Rosie did during their disputes. The only difference is Rosie was far more informed and had compassion for the innocent civilians and for the troops and their families.
How can anyone overlook Eh’s support of human beings being tortured? I was through with her when she went after Rory Kennedy the way that she did. I find her totally repulsive which is why I no longer watch the show.

Sherri comes across very lowclass and ghetto. If they had to add a woman of color why not pick someone who is well informed ,articulate and classy?
I cringe when I hear her speak and when she talks about her screwed up personal life. I really find her to be a walking talking stereotype.

I just want to make it clear: I never said Whoopi was unappealing, I said I found her fashion style unappealing. Thatis two seperate issues IMO. I do enjoy watching her and find her to be very well spoken, reasonable and rationale. She also can be quite humorous.
RD fan, I agree with you.

…and not to mention, Sherri S is a born again Christian and doesn’t believe we evolved from “primates”..ummm, we ARE primates honey. Check your bio book. Really, aren’t 2 born-agains too much? Why not have at least one atheist. Now it’s a bunch of comedians, a nobody reality show has been, and a “should have retired long ago” 5th wheel. gag me with a big spoon.
