The View to air weekly segments on Barbara’s book
As part of May sweeps, The View will be having weekly segments about Barbara Walters’ memoir Audition, which is out May 6th. I guess if you have a platform like that to publicize your book, you should do it, right? Hopefully it won’t be like her specials in that she reveals too much about the book, so there is not much left to read. I think the first segment in this series of segments will be next week, as there is no mention of it on this week’s schedule (which is below).
I am looking forward to her book, mostly to see what, if anything, she actually reveals about the backstage goings-on at the show. I also am also curious to know more about her relationship with her daughter.
I am hoping that I can get a review copy of it so that I don’t actually have to pay for it. I managed to get a review copy for Rosie O’Donnell’s book Crafty U, so it could happen. (My review of Rosie’s book coming once I have actually completed one of the crafts. Visually the book is absolutely stunning, but I have to try at least one of the crafts before giving a proper review).
Are you all looking forward to Barbara’s book?
Here is The View schedule for the rest of this week:
TUESDAY, APRIL 29 – Day of Hot Topics.
WEDNESDAY, APRIL 30 – Nominations for the “35th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards,” Tyra Banks (“Tyra”).
THURSDAY, MAY 1 – Uma Thurman (“Accidental Husband”); Gloria & Emilio Estefan (“Noventa Millas”).
FRIDAY, MAY 2 – Gwyneth Paltrow & Robert Downey, Jr. (“Iron Man”).

I want to read it–all about her dad’s nightclubs; her memories of what it was like being an ambitious woman in TV way back when; juggling that with motherhood. I also want the behind-the-scenes skinny at The View, but I doubt we’ll get too much of that from her. Except to settle some scores.
Funny how I don’t really think of her as the boss lady of the show anymore.

I would like to read her book. I have always admired Barbara. I too hope she doesn’t reveal too much on the show.
I wouldn’t if it were me.
I will look forward to your review of Rosie’s new book.

I can’t wait to read her book! Barbara Walters is truly a phenomenal woman.

“Barbara Walters is truly a phenomenal woman.”
So you no longer think she’s a “far left feminist”?

I have the utmost respect and admiration for Barbara Walters and all that she’s achieved despite our political differences.

I think her book is merely going to be more of the same old, same old that she always goes back to on the View, you know…the problems raising Jackie, her famous father Lou and the Latin Quarter, the financial support she had to give to her parents when Lou’s business(es) failed, her challenged sister, her oh-so-many dignitary interviews ad nauseum, and she will rave about the view and all the *goodness* that goes on behind the scenes and I also think her pimping this book endlessly is totally unnecessary.
I once and for many decades held Barbara in high esteem, but after the past 2 years and watching her becoming almost doddering and keeping EH on the view, I have just about lost it all for Barbara (and also allowing Bill Geddie RUN the entire show, a show that is supposed to be for women for the most part).
Just my opinion folks, no flames please. Y’all have a great day! *S*

MiamiVision, good points. That’s why I don’t waste my money on celebrity memoirs. I wait till they’re at the library.
I hope you post some more.
I also agree with you that BW has been a real disappontment the past few years, letting BG run the show and letting Baby Elisabeth sit with the grown-ups. (Sorry to whoever it was here that I stole that great line from — about Elisababy being at the big people’s table.)

I am not interested in reading BW’s book.
For me, weekly segments dedicated to discussing it sounds about as exciting as watching paint dry.
My opinions are similar to MiamiVisions regarding Barbara.

Barb will be on Oprah today to discuss the book:

I’m changing my position regarding “Audition”. It sounds like it will be much more interesting than I initially believed.

On Rosie’s blog, someone mentioned how BW apparently told Oprah that Rosie has “rage issues”

Winnie HELP.
I cant comment!

If BW is being truthful in her book about Rosie lashing out in the dressing room, there may be a problem. How many people would yell and swear at their boss as Rosie allegedly did? Does that mean that TLB also has issues with rage? Who knows who’s telling the truth.
May 2nd, 2008 at 10:06 am
Just being BW is telling the truth that Rosie lashed out doesn’t mean it’s the whole story, the entire truth. It doesn’t conclude that Rosie had a reason to (or not) lash out. Rosie has a side, too. She’s said BW didn’t response to e-mails after the Trump smackdown. We don’t know the entire truth of any of this. The key word is entire. Why repeat BW’s accusations without also repeating that Rosie has a side too?

sorry for the typo! Meant to say “Just because” not “Just being”; I need new glasses….

Barbara has her faults, as do we all, but she has also succeeded where many still fail. She has done alot. She is also about 70 years old I think. The brain changes - it gets less flexible. It slows down. I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that her brain isn’t what it was even 10 years ago. I think you can recognize that she isn’t what she used to be while still recognizing the respecting the impressive things she has done.

# 15 Lajet,
I agree,… I believe that Barbara will be 79 this year.

Three marriages and an affair? I wish she hadn’t revealed the affair. She may have accomplished a lot for women but she’s no role model.
May 4th, 2008 at 7:17 pm
I don’t hold it against anyone when their marriages and relationships don’t work out. There are too many factors and things that go on in a relationship that no one can understand except the two people involved. And not every marriage that lasts for decades is necessarily an admirable one; who knows what goes on behind closed doors, what deals with the devil someone has had to make just so they can say they were married for a zillion years.
What makes BW a role model for women is in her career in broadcasting, which began at a time when women were expected to do nothing more than be a support employee, like secretary. I also think her work ethic is exemplary, especially in the early years when she really needed to support herself and parents. I also admire how she picked herself up after the Harry Reasoner debacle and carved a niche for herself in broadcasting. I often have thought it was a shame it had to be more along the lines of celebrity work, but at least she made lemonade out of lemons.

What what it’s worth (I know I know, not much!) , I am NOT making a big case for how fab Babs is overall as a person, ’cause I have no idea about that. And I sure as hell am not a big defender of how she’s been on this show in recent years. Especially toward Star (who I’m not a fan of eitiher), Rosie (who I admire tremendously in the last couple years), and her pathetic coddling of Elisabeth and bizarre kow-towing to BG.
