The Tom Cruise interview was actually better than I thought it would be. Although, I dont think the part about Jett Travolta was unnecessary. He was either “acting” as to not disrespect his friend, or he was blindsided by Barbara actually asking the question. He really didnt have a response to the questions.
After the “non responsive” answers, they started joking around about Risky Business. Something seemed phony about that…. was he really too emotional to talk about Jett Travolta’s death, but not too emotional to joke around about a 25 yr old movie?

I compared this photo to the one yesterday fomr the NY Times Arts & Leisure (one of my fave sections of the Times :)) event. EH definitely look different all in blac, over powered by everybody else. On this phot w/Tom, it looks like she is looming above everyone else. Even looks more confident. Is it because she is in her ‘domain’?

I meant ‘all in black’.

“He was either “acting” as to not disrespect his friend, or he was blindsided by Barbara actually asking the question. He really didnt have a response to the questions.”
Tom and John are friends. I’d put myself in Tom’s place if my friend lost a child. I too would be speechless. I don’t think he was “acting” I think he was behaving like a compassionate friend and father.
“Agonies are one of my changes of garments,
I do not ask the wounded person how he feels, I myself become the
wounded person.”

I don’t think Tom is all that good of friends with John Travolta anymore. The Travoltas were not at Tom and Katies wedding (I read that somewhere this week- People maybe?)
AND wasn’t the service for Jett yesterday? Tom couldn’t have cancelled his View appearance to go support them?

I have never in my life been driven to the point of actually blogging … until now! Barbara Walters question to Tom Cruise regarding the Travolta Familys tragic loss was the most INAPPROPRIATE line of questioning I have ever had the misfortune to witness. She was no better than Rosie O’Donnells invterview with Tom Selleck. And to make it worse, the disrespect of shifting gears to immediately transition into a happy and joyful re-cap of Cruises career … shame on you Barbara!

Do you have to be “good friends” with somone to feel their pain? No, you have to be human. I can only go by what Tom has said “John and Kelly are my friends.” My uncle passed away a few weeks ago and I didn’t go to the service, it doesn’t mean I didn’t love him or support my aunt.

# 4 rainlillie,
I agree. I saw the show & interview. I felt he was very sincere in his actions. I too would have been speechless about those types of questions, at this time. What can you say when ask about the death of a friend’s child, ..except, it was horrific.
I loved your quote.

I don’t think Tom was acting at all when he reacted to that incredible rude and tabloid journalism question of BW’s. If anything he was taken aback and not sure how to answer it, like I’m sure any sane person would be in that same situation. It was out of line.
I don’t know if Tom went to the service or not, I haven’t followed it. But if he did go, you know all the media would be running stories about the “gathering of the Scientologists” and the ignorant watchers would lap it up.

Another opinion, if Tom had reacted and said “that was out of line” or “I don’t feel like answering it” etc. then the headlines that night would have been Tom goes nuts on the couch again! Tom avoids questions, what is he hiding etc.
He can’t win and I don’t envy him for being in that situation.

Let me preface this by saying - I really don’t like him - so anything he says sounds insincere to me.
I don’t understand how people can say that any parent - whether they have lost their child or not - “really loves that child”. It sounds like it’s unusual for a parent to love their child. Unless something is wrong with that parent - all parents really love their children.
Also - about the group picture - I wonder what Tom was standing on to look an inch or two taller than the women. Whoopi actually looks like she’s doing the Nicole/Katie slouch.

ShannonP, Sandy, Rainlillie–

I would have had a lot of respect for him if he would have responded like that. I will also admit that Im pretty jaded about media types and their sincerity.
That being said, I re-watched the segment, and looking at it from your passed along perspective, I think you might be right.
I want to apologize for my jaded views and I want to thank you for enlightening me.

“That being said, I re-watched the segment, and looking at it from your passed along perspective, I think you might be right.”
Response : You hit the nail on the head , as to why I started blogging. I would watch the show and I wished I could hear other peoples reactions and comments to certain segments, etc. Then I found Winnie ! Lots of times, I have changed my view, after hearing all the different perspectives. Today was a good example. Many times I comment and then 10 responses later, I change my opinion . Not always… just sometimes.

# 13 Roger,
No need to apologise.
I don’t think your views are jaded.
I agree with Marilyn. Some times after reading other opinions, it helps me to see the perspective of others.
It some times amazes me that there are so many different perspectives of the same thing.

I saw a little of the segment and the question posed to TC by BW. It was unnecessary and I thought Tom was generally just not wanting to go there with his answers. And that is OK with me. I can not believe that interview journalists go there with some of those kinds of questions. It seems so tabloid to me and I think sometimes they believe their viewers to be incredibly juvenile and dumb. I just don’t understand why they are trying to appeal to the lowest common denominator. I do find myself cringing when I watch this stuff, maybe I should just stop!
Great blog, I have been lurking for a while and I enjoy the posts here. Thanks

Barbara asking Tom about the Travolta tragedy is like when entertainment reporters ask celebs on the red carpet about any and every celeb tragedy. What do these reporters think celebs are going to say? Everybody feels bad, can we just leave it at that.
And awkwardly going from talking about the Travolta’s to talking about Risky Business reminded me of those news anchors who are talking about a fire or car accident and then smile and say next, cute puppies playing in the park.
