Video of April 14th View Hot Topics

by

As I stated in my recap, the hot topics in the April 14th episode of The View were more contentious than they have been in awhile and Joy Behar really didn’t hesitate to express her feelings to Elisabeth Hasselbeck about John McCain, Roe v. Wade, and the Bush administration.

Below is a recap of a large portion of the hot topics segment. For the full recap head here: April 14th View recap.

  1. Watching The View » Blog Archive » The View April 14th Recap: Tracy Morgan and Robin Quivers Says:

[...] Whoopi said it is because McCain has associated himself with Bush that people believe they have the same ideas. Elisabeth asked if then Barack is like Rev. Wright because they associate with other another? Joy said that we are talking about policy here and the only difference policy-wise between the two is that McCain is pro-environment. She said that she asked McCain off-camera how he could turn against women by being against Roe v. Wade. Elisabeth asked how that was turning against women. Joy shouted “It is against women and you know it!” Then they went to commercial. Joy was very angry throughout the segment, more so than I have seen in her recently. (Video here). [...]

    GGgggggooooooo Joy.

Whoopi - on the other hand, why do we have to spend 5 minutes listening to why people who earn 7 figures need to get their $600 dollars. Now, if she wanted to make an argument about how such a policy has a slippery slope and goes somewhere we don’t want it to go, I would listen. I have listened to the argument for why we don’t want social security to become needs-basedm and it made sense to me. But I didn’t hear Whoopi make any policy argument - she just wanted her $600 dollars like everyone else, as if there was something fair and even-handed about the tax system in the first place. Ssshhheeeez. I would have rather they not interrupted the tear on EH, priorities and all.

  3. roxanna Says:

I watch the view every morning and usually I have no strong feelings one way or the other about the difference each of you have concerning politics but the April 14th debate between Joy and Elizabeth sent my blood boling. Elizabeth was overbearing and full of herself. It would have pleased me to no end to here Joy tell her to shut up.I found myself screaming at the T.V. like a crazy women. It is now 4 hours later and I am still angry. I will still tune in because I enjoy Whoopie, Shari, and Joy.

  4. Lisa Says:

I don’t care if Joy shouted or whispered. She was 100 percent right! Thank you Joy! :-D

  5. NatureNut Says:

What happened after the first 10 minutes?

  6. Dee Says:

Thanks for the vid Winnie. Like nails on a blackboard and with the finger pointing again. I wonder if communication classes use EH’s segments with her interrupting, shouting down and sputtering in the background as a case study of what not to do on air?

I am glad that Joy finally gave it back. GO JOY! Whoopie’s tax tantrum just proves to me that she isn’t a guaranteed Democrat.

I expect Babs to be back on after today’s heat.

  7. Julianne Says:

Abidage - I have to say I appreciate your viewpoint (#12). What I’ve been trying to say, but didn’t do it as eloquently.

Thank you - I think the majority of us are open to discussing things even if we don’t see everything the same way.

  8. Stacee Says:

    Yep, Jen’s back!!!!! lol. :)

If anyone sounds like a shrill lunatic, it’s EH. Interupting, trying to talk over the other hosts. I’m just glad they did not let her get away with it today.

    Robin Q looked great.
There were funny moments during the Tracey Morgan interview. Some awkward moments too.

  9. mibi Says:

    # 12 you comments were well said but i think the same can be said of EH and has been said also Whoppi at on point or the other. and it just goes to show no matter where you stand you should be able listen to other views and calmy express your own which is what the view is about

  10. Dee Says:

    #12…

Joy does not do what she did today as a rule, unlike EH who does it routinely and she does it to the guests, especially if they are from the opposite political spectrum.

Since EH gets to rant daily I am glad that Joy finally spoke for the other side, which sadly has been mute since Rosie left the stage.

  11. Lisa Says:

I disagree with # 12. Men can’t have babies. If McCain takes away Roe v. wade it will impact women!

Jen, why do you bash Joy for speaking up but you never say anything about EH shouting over people and rudely pointing her finger? Abortion is a private matter and it has NOTHING to do with politics.

“I certainly want to hear what Joy has to say”

    Yeah right! :)

  12. Lisa Says:

“If anyone sounds like a shrill lunatic, it’s EH. Interupting, trying to talk over the other hosts. I’m just glad they did not let her get away with it today.”

You got that right. At least she didn’t jump in someones lap, like a little lapdog :-D

  13. Stephanie Says:

I was kind of disgusted when Whoopi made that comment about how she should get the 600 bucks..I mean really!!! Why does a millionaire care about that? I dont care how good a person she is, I didnt appreciate that. Its the kind of comment Rosie wouldnt make b/c she understands that she has ‘enough’.

  14. Erika Says:

Ay, Ay, Ay….Dios mío! Reminds me of a 34 year-old, Puerto Rican, Catholic woman.

  15. kc Says:

I think Joy is the one twisting it around. Obama was not talking to the Pennsylvanians about their job-loss issues. He was talking about them in a condenscending manner to super rich Californians. That is acting like an elitist. Big difference.

  16. SarahS Says:

    #27:
Yes, he was talking about them to others, rather than talking to them directly. He was being descriptive, though. His intention wasn’t to make fun of them. It was a cautionary tale he was telling.

  17. Stacee Says:

“canta y no llores, porque cantando se alegran cielito lindo los corazones”

He sings and does not cry, because singing the hearts make pretty folk dance happy

Esto es sólo una materia de tiempo, hacer tictac tock señalan tock

  18. Lajet Says:

What many (particularly young) people don’t realize is the context of Roe v. Wade. AT the time, women were dying in large numbers from botched abortions. Some self-induced, some by butchers, some by lack of proper medical facilities.
I can understand the arguments against abortion, and think it is possible to sincerely and intelligently hold that position. However, I think to hold that position you have to recognize that

    1. lots of women will die trying to have an illegal or self-induced abortion (and I recognize, that as a counterbalance, lots of children will live)
    and
    2. there will be more crime, and crime deaths as a result of lack of abortion (for back-up - read Freakonomics - a fascinating book - and I realize as a counterbalance, it may be the next Einstein or Picasso or Churhill who is aborted)
    and
    3. I won’t even bother to address the issue of overpopulation, as many anti-choice people believe all babies are from God (a defensible position) so overpopulation is an irrelevant argument.

I agree that anti-choice is an arguable position, but I don’t think it is a pristine choice with no logical and untoward consequences. I rarely hear anti-choice people talk about any long-term consequences to society. In my experience, their view is fairly myopic.

  19. Stacee Says:

From my understanding, these were not the super rich at the fundraiser, but rather middle class people who donated to his campaign. But because it was in San Francisco, CA, it was tagged as ultra rich liberal donors.

Here is a blog article from someone who was there:
    http://my.barackobama.com/page/community/post/hopeandchange/gGBWzl

  20. ~~Melissa Says:

What I’m wondering is, where is that invisible line where EH went from defending GWB to no end, and then, suddenly, differentiating him from McCain so she can vote for McCain? If EH had any credibility, she would acknowledge that her support has shifted and perhaps, ahem, she was wrong about GWB (as she will be now about McCain). She also comes across as really pathetic when she tries to imply that there may be evil lurking in Obama because of his twisted ex-minister. She puts loyalty so far ahead of thinking. I’m all for opposing views, but she does not come across as honest in her views.

  21. Aileeny Says:

OMG.. I am sitting here in my hotel room instead of working because I had an adverse reaction to some dental work and am Now on Vicodin.. Watched the clip and LORD HAVE MERCY!! My head is now spinning worse than it was before with all the overtalk and yelling! I had to mute the puter. On the other hand, I dont mind so much that Joy was yelling because she rarely behaves that way and once in a while is Ok and passionate. Every day would indicate issues of uncontrollable anger like some others. I dont think Whoops is being greedy about wanting her 600.00 but just wants fairness and not to be penalized for making more than others. On the other hand, I think she needs a better accountant and hope she is not doing her own taxes. She should have better investments and write offs for her tax bracket that is allowed to people of her income level.

    I’m just saying……

  22. Suzy Says:

Joy (a loose cannon but one of the most loveable of the group) needs a little more composure when challenged on her political beliefs. EH is so myopic, which makes her such an easy target, but Joy knows this so should be able to ameliorate the controversy with more class.

As for poster 30, right on! People should read Freakonomics - it is such a polarizing view, but if right, amazing….

  23. Ann Says:

I love Joy, she’s passionate and she lived through the years before Roe-v-Wade. Elisabeth has the benefit of all the women through the ages who suffered to gain voting rights, abortion rights, work rights etc. etc. etc. Go Joy!!!! Actually, JOY FOR PRESIDENT.

As usual Whoopi interrupted and bored everyone to tears.
