View ratings stayed up after Rosie’s departure
According to the New York Times, the ratings for The View stayed up in the first two full weeks following Rosie’s departure. In the weeks of June 4 and June 11, it drew an average of 3.4 million viewers per day. This is up 16% over the same period last year. During the course of Rosie’s tenure, the ratings were up approximately 17% over the previous year.
I don’t know if the ratings the first couple of weeks after Rosie’s departure really signify that the show will continue at its current popularity level. I know that a lot of people tuned in after Rosie left to see the tension, to see if the hosts were going to talk about the issue, etc. I think that we will need to revisit the numbers in a month or two to see if there is any real change. I also think that the selection of new hosts will make a big difference, obviously, in whether the ratings stay up.
Speaking of new hosts, another interesting point in the article was that Barbara Walters said that when she announces the replacement for Rosie, she will likely also announce the replacement for Star Jones. This we expected. What is different, however, is that she said that perhaps two new hosts could be used to replace Star. So, for example, they could put Gayle King in the moderator role and then have the other empty seat be a rotation of two people. What do you think of this idea? Perhaps they are having trouble deciding on one person for the spot? Or maybe they want to keep things interesting by not having the same five faces?

I read somewhere that although the ratings are up over last year at the same time period, they are down since Rosie left. As you know, ratings can be manipulated to tell any story you’d like and I think that is what they are doing.
With that said, I like the idea of having one moderator and a chair that is rotating ever now and then. I think it will keep it fresher. I think Gayle would be a great addition to the show. I’d like Kathy Griffin and Sherri Shepherd to be on the rotating chair. However, while my political leanings are to the left, I have yet to see a strong and articulate republican type(not Star Parker) and that could be an interesting addition.

Yesterday, I did the survey on the View site and left my email address. I have still not received the follow up link. Wonder if they just select certain people? Or maybe it takes awhile to get it?

OOPs my above comment should have been in the other article post.
On topic: I can believe the ratings are steady. I can see them staying the same, especially after the blowup, to see what Barb and the gang said and to see if and how Rosie’s departure has affected the show. It’s not a bad show, really. I love the Hot Topics and hearing what Joy has to say. I just really dislike Barb’s presense. I find her to be quite boring. Sometimes I fast forward through her long stories.
Question: Why are they mentioning Star Jones’ replacement? Star has been gone for a year now, ROSIE replaced her. So why are they referring to the unnamed new host as Star Jones replacement?

Stacee: Not sure about the survey. Maybe they are looking for a certain demographic?
Rosie was the replacement for Meredith Viera, as the moderator. They still never replaced Star, as the fifth host.

Winnie, I think you are right (about the survey demographics). Thanks. Ah well.
I did not realize Rosie replaced Meredith, and that they never actually replaced Star. That makes sense now.

I agree that BW is past her prime! If I hear one more time about how she was the first co-anchor of a prime time news show I will SCREAM! That was ancient history, Babs, move on! I used to have such respect for her professionally, but this show has ironically tarnished her star a little. I think a little mystique can be a good thing. And she is the most BORING moderator ever. Even when RO was still on, everything was a little muted if BW was on the panel that day—like Mama was watching.

I’ve only heard Babs mention her past achievements in broadcasting when they’ve been discussing women in the media–as in Katie Couric’s situation. It’s completely relevant for her to bring in her experiences, especially to remind the yonger women how hostile men were to having a woman in the anchor chair when Babs had her gig with Harry Reasoner. In any event, I’m happy that we are reminded of what a trailblazer Babs was. Too many women today take it for granted & I worry about the generation of nitwits (men and women) who wear the label of “journalist” these days. ” (I’m afraid we’re watching a Fox anchor-ette in the making on The View.) Babs is pushing 80, right? I think she does very well. She could be just a lady who lunches, but instead continues to work as best she can. And when you see her at the end of the DVD for Rosie’s gay-family cruise line, “All Aboard,” and you read about how touched she was at seeing the movie (that’s why she hired Rosie, for The View), I give her tons of credit. That was a couragous move during these conversative, gay-bashing days. Not an easy choice.

It is definitely great to hear and acknowledge how far Barb has come and the obstacles along the way. I totally agree on that. However, what I was referring to was how on occasion Barb would drone on and on about the people she has met and the interviews she has given. They don’t interest me and a lot of times hearing her voice grates on my nerves.
Truthfully, I don’t enjoy the show as much when she’s around.

Stacee,
I hear you. I’m sure I’m in the minority here when it comes to not minding Babs’s anecdotes about her career….
One thing I’ve only noticed recently is Babs reminding people that she “doesnt’ give opinions.” Is that true? Since when? I didn’t realize that that was her position.

I agree with you Peaches, about Babs
