Why Random People Watch The View

(NOTE: The picture to the left was cropped that way when I chose “thumbnail” option for displaying the photo in the post. I did not intentionally partially crop out Elisabeth or Whoopi. In case you were wondering. You can see the full photo by clicking on it).

I just got this bizarre press release from ABC to promote season 12 of The View. In addition to listing the scheduled guests for the first week of new View shows in September (not bizarre), it lists quotes from “12 random viewers” about why they love The View. Anyone else think that the “12 random viewers” are Bill Geddie, Barbara Walters, and some friends?

From the “random viewers”:

“I love to watch “The View” because…..

1. “It makes me proud to see a show with women discussing what’s important to me”

2. “I like talking back to the television. If they respond in kind, I feel validated. If they don’t, I figure I just got lost in the cross talk.”

3. “I need to know how to win an argument with my mother about current issues.”

4. “You never know what the ladies will say.”

5. “I want to see what Elisabeth is wearing” (This one probably was from a fan. I get e-mails alot asking me about who designed her clothing).

6. “I need something to talk about around the water cooler.”

7. “I want to catch news I might have missed.”

8. “I love the interaction between the ladies.”

9. “It reminds me of sitting down with my girlfriends and talking about everything.”

10. “I want to find out more about the celebrities I love.”

11. “It makes me forget my problems.”

12. “Hot Topics” is my favorite part of the show.”

Here are some other upcoming promotional things that you may be interested in:

On Monday, August 18 the ABC Television Network will begin airing a fun, original promotional spot featuring all five co-hosts anticipating the start of their twelfth season. Set to the classic Peter Gunn theme, the spot closes with the tagline “Ready, Set, View.”

Beginning, Monday, August 25 viewers can logon to the show’s official website (abc.com/theview) for a retrospective looking back at 12 of the most outrageous, hysterical, side-splitting moments from this past season.

  1. Dana Says:

I’m disappointed that neither of the promotional shows interest me and I find the quotes from “the viewers” ridiculous. Catch the news I might have missed?? People are relying on The View to get there news. Doesn’t say alot about the viewers.

  2. Carol Says:

I am so sick and tired of the women of that show being referred to as “ladies.” Has anyone ever taken the time to look that word up? How elitist and sexist. The are WOMEN! W-O-M-E-N!! That Bill Getty is going to kill that show - if he hasn’t already.

  3. ShannonP Says:

Carol, I’m not sure I understand the big deal about “ladies” vs. “women”. If you are still around, could you tell me what bugs you about the term lady or how it is elitist or sexist?
I don’t use the term lady often, it’s kind of outdated, but I didn’t realize it was also offensive to some (what isn’t these days though really).

  4. Kit Kat Says:

The reviews look very suspicious. There is never anything incorrect about the word lady but often these women do not always act “lady like”.

I also question what kind of numbnut would depend on the View for their news. They all crosstalk so much it is impossible to hear what they are saying most of the time.

  5. susieq Says:

sex surveys and endless boob talk is important to me? yeah right…teaches me how to win an argument? yeah fake tears and ripping up cards will work….never know what the ladies will say? i think we all know how the panel feels on most subjects since they never seem to waver from their views

  6. Dee Says:

This looks like a skull session among the staff on why the show is popular..the news comment was made by Baba herself on another show. Pfft! There is no surprise to Bits, she is going to rant the right-wing manifesto on every show. Her exra paycheck depends on it.

  7. Sandy Woodward Says:

“I like talking back to the television. If they respond in kind, I feel validated. If they don’t, I figure I just got lost in the cross talk.”

That random viewer has some serious issues.

I consider the term lady to be a compliment

But yes it can be a perjorative when it is used to label a female such as ‘Lady Cop’.

  8. Carol Says:

The use of the word “ladies” is controversal at best. The wikipedia entry on “lady” is an interesting read. A Lady is a woman who is the counterpart of a Lord. Guess that’s what bothers me. Almost seems as if a Lady has to have a counterpart. I never hear the term used collectively anymore except on that show.

  9. Sandy Says:

    Thanks Winnie.

I would “not” say that I love the View.
However i do watch it a few mornings a week.
To me, it’s not as good as it use to be, and I think there are several reasons for that.

Of all those 12 random reasons why some say they love the View, I can only identify with 1, and that is only some what, # 4 “you never know what the ladies will say”. I said some what because often, I do know what most of them will say about certain subjects.

The use of the word ladies, doesn’t bother me at all. That may be because i’m an older person. ?

  10. ShannonP Says:

Carol, the word lady has several meanings:

“b: a woman of refinement and gentle manners c: woman, female —often used in a courteous reference or usually in the plural in address <ladies and gentlemen”

Sandy, I don’t know what you consider an older person, but I’m 34 and the term ladies doesn’t bother me either.
Carol, does the term gentlemen bug you too?

  11. Yellow4Ro Says:

I wonder if Rosie will make it into the “12 past season moments”? I doubt Old BG will have the “conjones” ;-)[did I spell that correctly?] to include Rosie! LOL
About the new photo of the “ladies”, it seems photo-shopped to me. Like it’s 3 photos put together. Whoopi alone, then Joy and Sherri, finally BaWa and NeoBlonde. Anyone else think this is not really a “group” photo?

  12. Sandy Woodward Says:

Yes Yellow4Ro I thought photoshop, too. Reminded me of how the group shot of America’s Next Top Model gets thinned down to one.

  13. Fran Says:

    6. “I need something to talk about around the water cooler.”

Now I KNOW that BW and ‘friends’ made this crap up….does anyone even HAVE water coolers at work anymore?? Or stand around them to talk?? Puh-leese!

  14. Lajet Says:

My reaction to the word “ladies” is not negative, but it also doesn’t include a professional woman. To me suggests an adult female of somewhat more pampered lifestyle, although good, decent, caring and doing good works.
I would not mind going to a party have someone refer to me as a lady. I would mind going to work, a job which requires having attained a doctorate, and have them say “I’m the lady over there.”

It’s subtle. It’s not the world’s worst name. But it does not carry the authority with it (except perhaps in matters of protocol and charity) that “woman” does.

Now, do the females on the “The View” want to be ladies (and if your goal is entertainment it might fit) or do they want to be authorative (which is what you would want if you are distributing and commenting on newsworthy material.)

QUERY: Which role do you think BG wants for the women. The genteel, compliant ladies, or intelligent, authoratitive (albeit fair and honest and good) women.

  15. Michael Says:

Wow, EH is getting named in obama campaign material and in a good way. Her quote from the show-

Republican Elisabeth Hasselbeck Said About Michelle’s Comment That That Michelle Should Have The
Opportunity To Be Excited For Her Husband. Elisabeth Hasselbeck said about Michelle Obama’s comment,
“I think we should let her have the opportunity to be thoroughly excited even just for her husband. It is
incredibly moving. The fact that we’re supposed to be this country of opportunity for all, right? Now for the
first time we have a black man and a woman running that could actually be sitting in our white house. That’s
    incredible.” [The View, 2/19/08]

  16. Deborah Says:

The 12 random posts are so not random! I truly feel they are insulting my intelligence with such inane comments.

Water cooler? This sounds just like something BW would say.

Not sure if I can take another season of EH always having to be right and get the last word in.

  17. Jamie Says:

This is bs. This show used to have intelligent women talking about hot topics, now it’s just Joy, Grumpy, Silly, Stupid and Feeble talking about boobs, sex, with some political mis-information thrown in here or there. Pull the plug, or start fresh!

  18. May Says:

Jamie, I had to laugh when I read your comment. I know exactly who you are talking about when you say Grumpy, Silly, Stupid, and Barb er,ah Feeble. Too true!

  19. Kelly Says:

    Yellow4Ro: Cojones - and no they don’t! :)
Jamie - don’t forget Pervy Geddie.

  20. msroncon Says:

I also do not like the term “Ladies”. I can’t wait for the new season to start. I am sure they are going crazy wanting to give their “view” on everything.

  21. msroncon Says:

I just read who is going to be on the show when they return. Are you kidding me?! How utterly boring. Guess I take a midmorning nap.

  22. Stacee Says:

    LOL Jamie Too funny. :-D

  23. ranata Says:

i am a veiw watcher every day.i am sorry but i think elisabeth is very rude and i do not agree with her republican way. i am a hard working mom and my boyfriend works very hard and we live pay check to pay check and we still have problems. i think if she lived a middle class life she would feel alot diffrent about this election.most republicans have money and when your broke trying to raise a family own a home, pay a 5 hundred gas bill for one month.pay 600 dollars a month in gas to go to work. plus jugggle everythings your kids need to have a education.she wouldn’t be so negitive about why the demacratic party needs to be elected.the oil tycoons that she represents has no emotion for the middle class.there taxing us so they can make money and don’t have to spend a dime of there own to help people.its embarressing to have to get foodstamp and medical help because you can’t do it yourself.she never lets anyone finish there opinion before she opens her mouth.she just needs to shut her mouth and listen to what there saying before she says any thing.this is my opinion i would really like to say more about her but i won’t. i would like to say one more thing. GO OBAMA!!!!!!!!

  24. Rosie Says:

These women are so clueless about politics. This show is just too left wing biased. I wonder if they know they are pissing off half of their audience whenever they give their stupid opinions. Elisabeth is the only one with half a clue.
