Why they talk about sex so much on The View
During my exclusive interview with Sherri Shepherd, she revealed the process of how the hot topics are chosen each day on The View.
The hosts all meet up in the hair and make-up room and are given a big packet of possible topics, which include political news, human interest stories, and celebrity news. The women all go through the packet and point out topics that they are interested it. Sherri described the selection process this way:
If it is a big discussion and it seems like a lot of people are getting into the discussion, then they will hold it until we are out at the table. If there is a topic that we all agree on, then there is no discussion. If people wonder why they didn’t talk about a particular topic, it could be that there was no dissenting opinion. If we are passionate about it or it sparks a discussion or if it is big news, we will talk about it. There are some things that some of the ladies don’t want to talk about, but I will say that it is a big issue that people are talking about, like internet bullying. Joy and Whoopi don’t get on the internet, so they don’t want to talk about it.
Most regular viewers of The View know that the Friday episodes are taped earlier in the week, which is why they don’t discuss current event topics. The topic that might be big on the day they film will be old news by Friday. Sherri compared tapings for Friday shows to a “jeans day” at an office, which is more relaxed. Some of the topics on Friday shows come for your fellow viewers:
We take a lot of questions that the viewers wrote in with. Viewers write in with problems they are having and we will take that question and talk about it at the table. People ask “Why do they talk about sex so much?” A lot of viewers will write in questions about sex.

“Joy and Whoopi don’t get on the internet, so they don’t want to talk about it.”
????
So because they don’t go on the internet, they won’t discuss the issue?
I hope they will at least take a little time and research. I feel it would make a great conversation topic with interesting discussion.
Joy and Whoopi really need to expand their horizon. The internet is HUGE now. And if not, with EH and Sherri discussing it, maybe they will learn something.

Ok, Winnie. Please don’t take this the wrong way and I don’t know if the others will agree and keep in mind also I’m one of Sherri’s biggest fans but hey can we read about yesterday’s show? I wasn’t able to see it so I’ve been looking forward to hear about any comments that were made about Florida’s primaries and their views about Gulliani and Edwards withdrawal from the race. Sherri if you’re reading this, keep up the good work and we’re all very proud of your great contributions to the show.

Interesting, I have always wondered how the Hot Topics were chosen, and by whom.
It makes sense that they wouldn’t discuss a topic where there was no dissenting opinion.
I have to agree with Stacee, Internet bullying is a VERY big issue of today. To the point that a young girl in Missouri committed suicide because of Internet bullying. I think it would be a great thing to discuss.
Perhaps the View might consider a guest on that topic.??
I believe that there are “many” out there who do like the sex discussions.

I don’t mind them talking about sex when it’s part of a well rounded selection of topics. It gets old if it’s the main topic all the time because, to me, it implies that all women can think about or promote is sex. When it’s show about women’s views, I want to hear them talk about intellectual things too…politics, social issues, family issues. Just like I wouldn’t want any of those topics to be the main thing every day, it gets old if they talk about sex and boobs all the time.
I think having a man in charge of a show on women’s views is the main thing, above anything else, that is wrong with that show.

“I think having a man in charge of a show on women’s views is the main thing, above anything else, that is wrong with that show.”
I so agree!!! It is his view that seems to mess with the chemistry. Even when Meredith was moderator she showed visible disdain many days at some of his directions. Since then he has been quoted as mocking Star after she was terminated and of course there is his Rosie problem. Instead of Viewmaster perhaps he should be called Puppetmaster!

PRIOR POST Instead of Viewmaster perhaps he should be called Puppetmaster!
It’s my impression, not sure where it came from, that that was exactly what was going on in Elizabeth’s ear during the final episode with Rosie. I have a picture of Rosie talking about their relationship, and BG talking into Elizabeth’s ear urging her to “be strong,” possibly even feeding her the words “defend your own insinuations.” I actually can understand how it would be hard for EH (not one of my favorite people) to be sitting there on live TV, and having Rosie (who can be a bit intimidating) yelling at her from one side of the table and someone from the show that employs her (BG?) talking into her ear about how to respond, and she has to make split second decisions. I imagine it’s very hard. As Sherri demonstrated, being live is a lot of pressure and sometimes you say things you don’t mean because things are just moving so fast. I’m guessing that the normal reaction of responding to what you think the other person is saying is magnified - and someone was pulling the strings.
Then my question is, did they do it for ratings? or to get back at Rosie?
Or maybe I’m totally off-base.

Lajet, #6:
“having Rosie (who can be a bit intimidating) yelling at her ”
Lajet, if you look at the tape from this last episode, you will see that Rosie was not yelling at all, did not raise her voice at all. EH did, waving arms and getting very excited. But Rosie did not lose her composure. The media misrepresented this scenario, especially on Fox, telling everyone repeatedly that Rosie screamed, yelled, ranted, etc. By now, months later, everyone has heard this misstatement so often, they believe Rosie yelled, screamed. The power of repetition is very strong. This is a perfect example of that.

Mary, true that! In general, people misuse the word yell. I remember thinking how well Rosie controlled the volume of her voice.

Lajet,
I happen to agree with some elements of your comment. # 6.
I believe that there VERY probably was things said into E.H.’s ear. And it has to be hard on live television where everything moves very quickly, you don’t have many moments to think. Especially when someone is prompting your response. I’m also sure that E.H. felt defensive at the time…as well as I believe that Rosie felt defensive too. I watched the show and Rosie wasn’t “yelling”, but she was pushing.
And I believe it was done the way it was for ratings.
Anyway I think the outcome was sad and hurtful to the both of them.
