  1. Angie Robertson Says:

Hi - I am interested in E. Hasselbeck’s book and would love to read a copy. I have been tested for celiac disease several times, but the test has always been negative. I’d like to know more about the disease from someone who has it. Thanks - Angie

  2. Sunny Says:

Winnie, why are you playing the game EH’s PR hacks want you to play and promoting this book? How did they find this site? Isn’t this just part of EH’s rehabilitation strategy? Why would this blog want to help EH rehabilitate and make more money?

  3. Sunny Says:

BTW, on average, these celebrity books (ie often written by someone else/in partnership with someone else) make the celebrity $1 per book sold. Bitsy’s book will sell at least 500,000 copies. Do you really want to contribute even $1 to Elisabeth Hasselbeck’s bank account?

  4. Millie Says:

I don’t understand why everyone dislikes Elisabeth Hasselbeck so much. Do they know her personally or just disagree with her political views? While i’m not a big fan, I think her book could be useful for someone who has an allergy or sensitivity to gluten.

  5. Winnie McCarthy Says:

Sunny: I actually sought out her publisher to get a copy to review and they offered the free copies for me to give away. The issue of Celiac disease is an important topic and I am happy to spread the word about it.

  6. Stacee Says:

Millie Says: “I don’t understand why everyone dislikes Elisabeth Hasselbeck so much. Do they know her personally or just disagree with her political views? ”

MY RESPONSE: I don’t like her. Don’t know her personally either, but I don’t care for her personality.

Winnie, how cool that you are given the opportunity to give away a book. ((Please note: I am not interested in winning it, don’t want it; I just wanted to express what a nice thing this is that you are doing.)) Keep up the good work.

  7. Stacee Says:

Sunny Says: “BTW, on average, these celebrity books (ie often written by someone else/in partnership with someone else) make the celebrity $1 per book sold. Bitsy’s book will sell at least 500,000 copies. Do you really want to contribute even $1 to Elisabeth Hasselbeck’s bank account?”

MY RESPONSE: Wow Sunny, $1 per book? I did not know that.

They probablly give copies away so the people will spread the word and that would in turn encourage sales.
I still think it’s cool Winnie is giving away the book, but I see what you are saying about the promoting it…
Me personally, I’d rather give my time and money to another author of a gluten - free book. That’s just me, though.

  8. Mary Evans Says:

I don’t want a copy either. However, Winnie has a family member suffering so I can understand her interest. And her review of the book was that it was very informative.

I’m not intersted in supporting EH in any way, however, this is an important subject. IMO, EH certainly didn’t write it anymore than she “designed” the clothes for Dialogue for QVC. She can’t even get the facts straight about learning she had it and says she has been writing the book for almost 10 years. I call bullshit based on what she has said, articles and how she can eat out in a restaurant but NEVER taste food or beverages on The View. She prefers to throw the food. But then I think she is a moron and a hypocrite. And very lucky.

Nonetheless, more power to the people that are helped by the book.

  9. DiannaC Says:

Millie Says: “I don’t understand why everyone dislikes Elisabeth Hasselbeck so much. Do they know her personally or just disagree with her political views? ”

I do not need to know EH personally to dislike her. She has an immature and frustrated aura.

I found her to be really nasty and offensive during this past Presidential Campaign season.

When it comes to politics, she has never really admitted that the George Bush has made a number of hugh mistakes during this presidency.

It is not so much her political opinions which offend, but the way she communicates her views.

She is one-dimensional, combative, frequently has not done her homework and does not have her facts straight.

If anyone says anything complimentary about any Democrat, she takes it as a personal attack against any and ALL Republicans. She really gets angry and jealous. She behaves like a petulant teenager.

I will never forget the way she kept hammering away at Obama’s relationship with Reverend Wright and Bill Ayres… but it was perfectly okay for McCain/Palin supporters to yell “Hang Obama, Hang the nigger” during Palin’s campaign and Palin never once attempted to neutralize the situation.

I don’t blame Whoopi for frequently and cooly ignoring her!

Boy, am I on a rant! I have given myself a headache writing about that young woman.

  10. ds Says:

Stacee says: “I’d rather give my time and money to another author of a gluten - free book.” That’s me, too, Stacee.

Count me among those who definitely do not want a copy. Elisabeth Hasselbeck is not where I would go for information on anything.

  11. Marlow Artis Says:

I want a copy of Elisabeth’s book. I know someone who might have Celiac Disease. I told her that I would purchase the book for her. This would work out well. Plus, I’m happy to give EH some support since there is so much hate.

  12. marthe Says:

Maybe because she shows not a scintilla of empathy for anyone who isn’t a pompous rethug.

Or how annoying people are who walk around thinking they are all that when objective observers have drawn a different conclusion.

OMG, rush limbaugh has been married 3 times. The last time Clarence Thomas officiated.

  13. sean Says:

    i want to win!

  14. Sunny Says:

@ Winnie #5: Winnie as I have said before, I completely agree that Celiac disease is a serious ailment and while I don’t have it nor do any of my family or friends (as far as I know), I certainly support research into the disease and the disemination of information so that people that are suffering can be helped. HOWEVER, it is very clear to me that EH did not write the book, has not devoted the time and commitment to properly research the disease and I am of the view that she MAY not even be suffering from Celiac disease and has used it first as an excuse for an eating disorder and now as an excuse for making money from a book on the subject.

One more piece of evidence for your consideration: on Twitter EH responded to someone from a Gluten-free interest group and exposed that she was not even aware of material and information contained in her own book. The person asked EH about a G-free product and EH said she didn’t know that brand made such-and-such - whereas her book talks about the product!! Proof positive that she had nothing to do with the book other than putting her name and face on it and reaping the financial benefits. A few days later the ‘tweet’ exchange was removed!! I do think EH also has a deal promoting Twitter (the way she goes on about it) and thus was able to have her Twitter entry log edited (this is a topic for another day).

Winnie, given your passion and concern about persons suffering from Celiac disease (which is 100% valid and illustrates your very compassionate nature), can I suggest that you use this website to dissmeinate information about other books and sources of inromation about the disease and about G-free living. In other words, post lists of other books, websites and sources of information, including importantly the not-for-profit organisations related to Celiac and G-free living. If you do not have the time to do this, I would be happy to compile lists and draft blog entries for your review and approval. Let me know.

In the meantime, I maintain my view that we should not be doing anything to promote projects by EH (or any celebrity) when their mission is money-making and where they are taking advantage of a serious disease or ailment to further their career and “celebrity”. For example, Mary Tyler Moore doesn’t profit from her diabetes and proceeds from her books and other activities she gets invovled with go to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. Similary, proceeds from Michael J. Fox’s upcoming book (and existing Foundation activities and fund-raising) go to Parkinsons, etc. etc.

EH is a self-absorbed, self-serving fraud. Her objective in putting her face and name on this book is to make money for her personal gain only, broaden her platform (reality TV, talk show host, designer and now AUTHOR!) and increase her “celebrity”. The fact she may have Celiac disease or otherwise benefits from a G-free diet (weight management), is just a convenient excuse for the subject matter of the book. If she could not associate herself with a disease she was already planning to write children’s books.

I also reiterate my request that EH produce her biopsy results - or produce the doctor her diagnosed her - to confirm she really does have Celiac disease. Her “confusion” over when she was diagnosed and “come lately” relationship with Dr. Green are highly suspicious.

IMPORTANT UPDATE: had another look at EH’s Twitter updates, she has definitely delted evidence that she had no clue about material in her “own” book. and get this: there is a statement in reply to “sillyak11″, EH is now saying this re her Celiac diagnosis:

@sillyyak11 HEY! i have had celiac since 1997. self diagnosed in 2002. medical diagnosis in 2005. as soon as i went gfree: i felt new.

UN-F*CKING-BELIEVABLE: talk about revisionist history to suit the lies you have told, EH.

  15. marthe Says:

Lol, I thought the “had celiac since 1997.” was a little wanky, so I went to wiki. Okay yeah it is an autoimmune disease.

What was funny about the wiki article was it mentioned that catholics were insistent about the communion wafer must be made of wheat. So they proposed that celiac sufferers should not become priests. The article also mentions that Jews are supposed to eat matzoh at Passover, but such a commandment should be eschewed in favor of a person’s health.

And what does a vegetarian do?

Somebody at TWOP posted a clip of Rosie and Kathy Griffin. Not big fans of the big G.

  16. Sunny Says:

Look what has been posted on the ABC News website after EH’s appearance on GMA this morning:

“I too have Celiac disease, I was also misdiagnosed for twenty years. Oddly enough I too have written a book about Celiac disease. The book is titled Living with Celiac disease. It is also being released this month at Amazon and Borders bbook stores. It is currently being sold on Xlibris.com for anyone who is interested. In fact I mailed Elizabeth Hasselbeck A copy on April 4, 2008 to the view by certified mail. To my amazement I never even received so much as a confirmation or even a thankyou card. So much for Celiacs Sticking together. It is amazing how much the two books have in common. I wonder why that is. Maybe Elisabeth could shed some light on that for me. If she would like to respond to this My E mail is living with celiac @ hotmail.com Thanks much, Sue Hassett”

Combine this apparently verifiable event - ie full book transcript on same subject sent to EH more than one year ago - with Twitter event revealing EH didn’t even know the content of her book, combined with the changing stories on when and how she was diagnosed…and I think the plagarism suggetsion by Sue Hassett is worth investigating.

  17. Lauren Says:

I would LOVE to win a copy of the book!! I am tired of walking around looking pregnant and in pain everytime I eat! I’ve tried to cut out gluten in the past but I always fail because I love food, especially bread. I am interested in trying recipes that fill the craving and are good for my body. Thank you!-Lauren

  18. lynn c Says:

Many of us here are in dire need of The H-Free Diet…..EH free, all the time. I turned off Good Morning America this AM the second I heard her screechy self was going to appear, hawking a book which may or may not, according to these posts, be hers. She’s just obnoxious on every level and of no use on The View at all.

  19. mibi Says:

i want a free copy to give to a friend with the condition

  20. lynn c Says:

P.S. What’s next, Sherri Shepard’s Guide to Diabetes???

  21. Diane from N.J. Says:

….and Whoopi Goldberg’s Guide to Living With Cigarettes ?

  22. Carrie Says:

I was diagnosed with Lupus (SLE) a little over a year ago. I have read that a gluten free diet can help people living with Lupus to not suffer from chronic pain and symptoms of the disease. I saw Elisabeth on GMA and became very interested in reading her new book. At this point I will try anything to live a healthier life not only for myself but for my family as well.

  23. Sunny Says:

nah, Whoopi’s self help book will certainly be: How I Stopped Smoking and How You Can Too…this is more along the lines of EH’s G DIET…and it would be a best seller, for sure!

  24. KJ Says:

I would like to win a copy of the book. I have celiac disease (was diagnosed 9 years ago) and would like to know what she has to say about it since she rarely discusses it publicly and has shown VERY little public support for people with celiac until this opportunity arose. I’m curious to know if there is anything in the book that I haven’t gotten off the internet.

  25. Jon A Says:

WOuld love to win the book!

  26. blu Says:

I would love a copy.. Maybe it will give me some insight to my digestion system.

  27. Annie Says:

I’d like to enter to win a copy! Thanks :)

  28. Michelle Says:

I want to win a copy of the book please!

Thanks for all you do with this site. I enjoy your recaps and comments when I’m stuck at work.

  29. Cindy Says:

I was finally diagnosed with Celiac in 1995. At that time there was very little information available about the disease. Only a few people had internet access and those who did had to try to figure out which information was accurate and which was not! I would love to win a copy of the book. As president of a support group for people with Celiac Disease I am always looking for new information to share with the several hundred members of my group.

  30. Erika Says:

I would like a copy. I am now living gluten-free for life and any extra information helps. Not everyone who has Celiac or gluten intolerance experiences the same symptoms, but I’m not one of those people who has a choice. There is no gluten food I love so much that I would willingly suffer days of food poisoning syptoms for- I avoid it at all costs.

  31. Karen C. Says:

I am a recently diagnosed celiac and I would love to win a copy of this book. I think it’s great that there’s a celebrity willing to talk about her struggle with this disease; it’s not very well known, but many people have it.

  32. Erika Says:

Winnie, I’m the same Erika that has commented before- I just wanted to use my email that I check most often on #27.

  33. erica Says:

  34. ShannonP Says:

Thanks for putting this together Winnie.
I would like to win a copy of the book and learn more about Celiac disease.

  35. Myrna Cohen Says:

My son was diagnosed w/Crohn’s 20 yrs ago. Last year he started to take responsibility of the disease himself, pouring thru the internet, & put himself on a gluten free Celiac diet. It did wonders & he feels so much better. I would love to get him this book…sounds very informative. Thank you, Elizabeth

  36. Lisa Thames Says:

I would LOVE to win this book for a friend who has just been diagnosed with Celiac’s. Thank you!

  37. Erika Says:

Correction, now that I’m out of moderation…
My #32 is referring to my #30

  38. Joan Scherer Says:

Gluten Free for a year. Not easy but not without reward. Now my son has ulcerative colitis. I’m hoping this book will help him. There are many people his age who have digestive issues and hoping we can help them by educating them. Thanks for going public with this. I think we are on the tip of the iceberg in terms of number of people that here in America are Gluten Intolerant. Many just think they have an upset stomach, or allergies, or are overly sensitivity to perfume, or candida, or “poop”issues, or acne, or achy joints. And all these symptoms are possibly just because they really are Gluten Sensitive.

  39. Jo Says:

Hi I would be so grateful for advice on what is a crippling disease. Thanks

  40. Jenny Says:

My two kids have celiac and I have celiac and would love to win this book. Not many people here where I live no anything about celiac disease and it is so frustrating. Sounds like a great book to read.

I would like to win the G free book for my daughter. She has celiac disease & has a hard time with the diet.

  43. ShutUpElisabeth Says:

    I could use a copy.

  44. Erika Says:

Joan Scherer, I’m so glad you mentioned the smell sensitivity. That was my first major symptom that started when I was pregnant like a lot of women, but my sensitivity never went away (14 years later) and got worse. My stomach issues only came 2 weeks before I figured out I had it. I use all unscented products and cleaners and can barely tolerate being around scented detergents and perfumes and chemical smells. I thought I just had MCS and bad joints and hormonal skin problems. Now, I realize all of these things are side effects of the vitamin deficiencies caused by Celiac disease. I wish I’d known about Celiac earlier in life and I could have avoided a lot of these issues.

  45. Madison's Mom Says:

Hello, I would be so very grateful to receive a copy of this very helpful and “about time” book! My daughter who is now 10 was diagnosed with Celiac Disease in April of 2004. We would like to read the book together and get more info and some new ideas! Thansk a million :) PS Best of luck to you Elisabeth - Great Job!

  46. Mary Says:

I was diagnosed with Celiac last September, and would love a copy of the book for so many reasons. I am still learning, and really like the information people who have had Celiac for a while can give. Elisabeth has been so successfull since her diagnosis, which shows to me that she has a good grip on her diet. I need some advice from fresh eyes.

  47. Tammy Says:

I would love a copy of your book. I’m new to the Celicac- gluten free world and I can use all the help I can get. Tammy

  48. Sue Says:

    Hi!
I would enjoy having Elizabeth’s book as an aid in trying to navigate around the frightening and unknown world of gluten free. I recently had bloodwork taken by a naturopath who was suspicious of a gluten sensitivity that remains unsymptomatic (which is scary because it could have been present for a while without being the wiser).

My naturopath thinks this sensitivity might be the long-awaited answer to the neuropathy in my feet. Honestly, although I would love to heal my neuropathy (if going gf is the answer), a complete overhaul to my dietary intake and lifestyle, including enjoyment of infrequent social and restaurant outings, is somehow frightening to me.

  49. Vegas Says:

I believe that Elisabeth ‘wrote’ this book about as much as I believe that she ‘designed’ those hideous clothes for QVC and how that her just turned 4 year old daughter reads chapter books, and was so exited to see Whoopi Goldbergs latest installment. That was a goody.
I also believe it as much as I believe that Elisabeth actually spends enough time with her kids to do ‘projects’ and I believe it as much as I believe that Elisabeth can put up with her daughter long enough to ‘read’ these chapter books with her.

  50. Alice Says:

I would love to win a copy of the “G-Free Diet” book. My daughter has been suffering for years with celiac disease and this would be a great help to her. Money is pretty tight these days and I can’t afford to buy a new copy.

  51. tracy Says:

So, Elisabeth is a plagiarist. Contacting ABC is not going to do the job for Sue Hassett. She’s going to have to contact the Huffington Post or maybe Perez Hilton.

Or maybe I’ll contact Perez Hilton.

  52. M Says:

She copied her grandma’s recipe is that worth the cost of this book?
Elisabeth just want to sale a book.

  53. Tasha Says:

I bet she did plagirize the book. I look forward to her weeping on the View saying it’s all a misunderstanding and crawling into Barbara’s lap again. Ugh.

  54. MiamiVision Says:

Just today, I wrote to Ms. Hassett and beseeched her to read EH’s book and see if there was actual plagarism and to please file a suit.

I have yet to hear back from her. Her addie is living with celiac at hotmail dot com.

  55. Sunny Says:

    URGENT.

ABC has started to delete all references to Sue Hassett. They have deleted her original post on ABC News wherein she reported that she had sent (via certified mail) a copy of her very similar book on “Living with Celiac Disease” to EH in April 2008.

The cover-up is underway. I would not be surprised if ABC tries to pay off Sue Hassett to keep quiet and even withdraw her book.

So everyone here who is interested in ensuring these plagarism allegations are fully investigated please archive copies of Sue Hassett’s message and Sue Hassett’s website (livingwithceliac.net) which provdies a summary of her book.

I hope Sue Hassett reject any offers by ABC and/or Hasselbeck’s agents to be quiet and withdraw her story and her book.

This charge of plagarism looks like it has legs. If proven, it will be the end of EH’s career.

I really want to win a copy of this book and here is why. My mom was just recently watching Good Morning America and Elizabeth was on talking about Celiac Disease. As my mom was watching it she immediately thought of me because I have many of the symtoms. I have yet to be tested but I really think that this may be possible and I would really like to know more information. I also just had surgery and since that I have noticed these symtoms! Please consider me for winning a copy of this book because I think it will help me resolve a lot of my current health issues because I too am asked if I am pregnant because my stomach is so bloated all the time!! PLEASE HELP!

  59. JBailey Says:

    I want to win!!

  60. Sandra Brown Says:

I want to win a copy of the book. My daughter is 16 years old and was diagnosed with celiac disease when she was 1 1/2. At that time is was VERY difficult to find resources for her, but as the years have passed gluten-free foods have become more readily available. I would love to be able to provide her with this valuable resource!!!

  61. Sunny Says:

Winnie et al, you should be aware that the National Celiac Foundation has issued the following warning about Elisabeth Hasselbeck’s book:

From Elaine Monarch, Executive Director of the Celiac Foundation:

“I am writing to call your attention to the current publicity surrounding the new book, The G-free Diet, A Gluten-Free Survival Guide by Elisabeth Hassselbeck, co-host of The View. While it is important to call attention to celiac disease, the information must be accurate – the inaccuracies in this book are potentially dangerous and detrimental to celiacs and to those yet to be diagnosed if people self diagnose and start eating GF. Our mission is to assist in getting people accurately diagnosed and the message in this book could defeat this mission. It appears that this book is being marketed as a fitness diet – eat g-free and feel so much better. Celiac is incorrectly referred to as an allergy not an autoimmune disease.

The GF diet is the medically mediated prescription that controls the condition for a diagnosed celiac. Several items in the book are misleading and inaccurate and place further limitations on the GF diet. The gluten-free lifestyle is a lifelong commitment for the diagnosed celiac, not an option, not a fad diet – adhering to the GF lifestyle requires patience and persistence. This lifestyle can not be trivialized.”

  62. Megan Says:

I would LOVE to win a copy of the book! We are thinking of going GF for my sons health they are autistic and we need all the advice we can get!

  63. John Gooler Says:

I would love to win a copy of the GF Diet By Elisabeth. My son an I have both been diagnosed with Celiac disease and would love to learn more about it. And I am also a big fan of Elisabeth. You ROCK Elisabeth!!!!

  64. Summer Deal Says:

I was just printing out a coupon to purchase the book at Borders. It would help us out greatly if we could win the book. Thank you for posting this information and opportunity.

    Naturally,
    Summer

  65. Ellie Says:

I would like to read and own a copy of Elisabeth’s book. I believe it is a healthly lifestyle of eating. THanks! P.S. I love the View!!
